Beat by Beat: Classifying Cardiac Arrhythmias with Recurrent Neural Networks

With tens of thousands of electrocardiogram (ECG) records processed by mobile cardiac event recorders every day, heart rhythm classification algorithms are an important tool for the continuous monitoring of patients at risk. We utilise an annotated dataset of 12,186 single-lead ECG recordings to build a diverse ensemble of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) that is able to distinguish between normal sinus rhythms, atrial fibrillation, other types of arrhythmia and signals that are too noisy to interpret. In order to ease learning over the temporal dimension, we introduce a novel task formulation that harnesses the natural segmentation of ECG signals into heartbeats to drastically reduce the number of time steps per sequence. Additionally, we extend our RNNs with an attention mechanism that enables us to reason about which heartbeats our RNNs focus on to make their decisions. Through the use of attention, our model maintains a high degree of interpretability, while also achieving state-of-the-art classification performance with an average F1 score of 0.79 on an unseen test set (n=3,658).

Two twin binaries with nearly identical components: KIC 4826439 and KIC 6045264

Two twin binaries, KIC 4826439 and KIC 6045264, with very similar component stars were found photometrically based on $\textit{Kepler}$ eclipsing binary light curves. The absolute parameters of the massive components are 1.156(0.03)$M_\odot$, 1.881(0.02)$R_\odot$, 6065K for KIC 4826439, and 0.874(0.3)$M_\odot$, 1.206(0.02)$R_\odot$, 6169(30)K for KIC 6045264. The differences between the components are less than two percents for all the parameters. A very low proportion of the twin binaries ($2/1592\approx0.13\%$) was found, which does not support the previous findings of the excesses of twins on binary mass ratio distribution, but support a deficiently low proportion of twins. A new method is practiced to work out the absolute parameters of the two twins without the radial velocities. This method requires the solution of the light curves, the spectra and the evolutionary isochrones of covering the complete stellar parameter space, simultaneously. We also studied their evolution tracks that: KIC 4826439 will experience an unstable mass transfer stage followed by an unclear ending, and KIC 6045264 will become a single star via an over-contact phase. It seems highly unlikely that the two twin binaries will produce twin degenerate binaries, although they have quite similar components.

Physical properties and evolutionary status of the W-subtype contact binary V502 Oph with a stellar companion

Multi-color ($B$ $V$ $R_c$ $I_c$) CCD photometric light curves of the contact binary V502 Oph are analyzed using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) program. The solutions reveal that V502 Oph is a W-subtype contact ($f = 35.3\,\%$) binary system. The temperature difference between its two components is $240K$ and the more massive star has a lower surface temperature. A cool spot is added in our model to account for the light curves' asymmetry (O'Connell effect) and third light is detected for the first time in the light curves' modeling. Combining the orbital inclination ($i = 76.4^{\circ}$) with the published mass function of V502 Oph, the absolute physical parameters of the two components are determined, which are $M_1= 0.46(\pm0.02)M_\odot, M_2=1.37(\pm0.02)M_\odot, R_1=0.94(\pm0.01)R_\odot, R_2=1.51(\pm0.01)R_\odot, L_1=1.13(\pm0.02)L_\odot$ and $L_2=2.49(\pm0.03)L_\odot$. The formation and evolutionary status of V502 Oph are discussed. All photoelectric and CCD times of light minimum about V502 Oph are gathered and its orbital period variations are analyzed. The results show that the orbital period of V502 Oph is decreasing continuously at a rate of $dP/dt=-1.69\times{10^{-7}}day\cdot year^{-1}$, which corresponds to a conservative mass transfer rate of $\frac{dM_{2}}{dt}=-3.01\times{10^{-8}}M_\odot/year$. The light-travel time effect (LTTE) is due to the presence of a close-in tertiary component with a period of $P_3=18.7$ years and an amplitute of 0.00402days. V502 Oph is an ideal target to test the formation and evolution theories of binary and multiple systems in which the light curves, $O - C$ curve and spectroscopic observations are comprehensively researched.

Elucidating the Voltage Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy

Voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) is an efficient way to manipulate the magnetization states in nanomagnets, promising for low-power spintronic applications. The underlying physical mechanism for VCMA is known to involve a change in the d-orbital occupation on the transition metal interface atoms with an applied electric field. However, a simple qualitative picture of how this occupation controls the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and even why in certain cases the MCA has opposite sign still remains elusive. In this paper, we exploit a simple model of orbital populations to elucidate a number of features typical for the interface MCA and the effect of electric field on it, for 3d transition metal thin films used in magnetic tunnel junctions. We find that in all considered cases including the Fe (001) surface, clean Fe1-xCox(001)/MgO interface and oxidized Fe(001)/MgO interface, the effects of alloying and electric field enhance the MCA energy with electron depletion which is largely explained by the occupancy of the minority-spin dxz,yz orbitals. On the other hand, the hole doped Fe(001) exhibits an inverse VCMA, where the MCA enhancement is achieved when electrons are accumulated at the Fe (001)/MgO interface with applied electric field. In this regime we predict a significantly enhanced VCMA which exceeds 1pJ/Vm. Realizing this regime experimentally may be favorable for a practical purpose of voltage driven magnetization reversal.

Efficient Delivery Policy to Minimize User Traffic Consumption in Guaranteed Advertising

In this work, we study the guaranteed delivery model which is widely used in online display advertising. In the guaranteed delivery scenario, ad exposures (which are also called impressions in some works) to users are guaranteed by contracts signed in advance between advertisers and publishers. A crucial problem for the advertising platform is how to fully utilize the valuable user traffic to generate as much as possible revenue. Different from previous works which usually minimize the penalty of unsatisfied contracts and some other cost (e.g. representativeness), we propose the novel consumption minimization model, in which the primary objective is to minimize the user traffic consumed to satisfy all contracts. Under this model, we develop a near optimal method to deliver ads for users. The main advantage of our method lies in that it consumes nearly as least as possible user traffic to satisfy all contracts, therefore more contracts can be accepted to produce more revenue. It also enables the publishers to estimate how much user traffic is redundant or short so that they can sell or buy this part of traffic in bulk in the exchange market. Furthermore, it is robust with regard to priori knowledge of user type distribution. Finally, the simulation shows that our method outperforms the traditional state-of-the-art methods.

Randomized Mechanisms for Selling Reserved Instances in Cloud

Selling reserved instances (or virtual machines) is a basic service in cloud computing. In this paper, we consider a more flexible pricing model for instance reservation, in which a customer can propose the time length and number of resources of her request, while in today's industry, customers can only choose from several predefined reservation packages. Under this model, we design randomized mechanisms for customers coming online to optimize social welfare and providers' revenue. We first consider a simple case, where the requests from the customers do not vary too much in terms of both length and value density. We design a randomized mechanism that achieves a competitive ratio $\frac{1}{42}$ for both \emph{social welfare} and \emph{revenue}, which is a improvement as there is usually no revenue guarantee in previous works such as \cite{azar2015ec,wang2015selling}. This ratio can be improved up to $\frac{1}{11}$ when we impose a realistic constraint on the maximum number of resources used by each request. On the hardness side, we show an upper bound $\frac{1}{3}$ on competitive ratio for any randomized mechanism. We then extend our mechanism to the general case and achieve a competitive ratio $\frac{1}{42\log k\log T}$ for both social welfare and revenue, where $T$ is the ratio of the maximum request length to the minimum request length and $k$ is the ratio of the maximum request value density to the minimum request value density. This result outperforms the previous upper bound $\frac{1}{CkT}$ for deterministic mechanisms \cite{wang2015selling}. We also prove an upper bound $\frac{2}{\log 8kT}$ for any randomized mechanism. All the mechanisms we provide are in a greedy style. They are truthful and easy to be integrated into practical cloud systems.

Candidates of eclipsing multiples based on extraneous eclipses on binary light curves: KIC 7622486, KIC 7668648, KIC 7670485 and KIC 8938628

Four candidates of eclipsing multiples, based on new extraneous eclipses found on Kepler binary light curves, are presented and studied. KIC 7622486 is a double eclipsing binary candidate with orbital period of 2.2799960 days and 40.246503 days. The two binary systems do not eclipse each other in the line of sight, but there is mutual gravitational influence between them which leads to the small but definite eccentricity 0.0035(0.0022) on the short 2.2799960 days period orbit. KIC 7668648 is hierarchical quadruple system candidate, with two sets of solid 203(+-5) days period extraneous eclipses and another independent set of extraneous eclipses. A clear and credible extraneous eclipse is found on the binary light curve of KIC 7670485 which made it a triple system candidates. Two sets of extraneous eclipse of about 390 days and 220 days period are found on KIC 8938628 binary curves, which not only confirms the previous conclusion of $388.5(+-0.3) triple system, but also proposed a new additional objects that make KIC 8938628 a hierarchical quadruple system candidates. It is wished that the four candidates here will make some contributions to the field of eclipsing multiples.

The Photometric Investigation of V921 Her using the Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope of Chang'e-3 mission

The light curve of V921 Her in ultraviolet band observed by the Lunar-based Ultraviolet Telescope (LUT) is analyzed by the Wilson-Devinney code. Our solutions conclude that V921 Her is an early type marginal contact binary system with an additional close-in component. The binary system is under poor thermal contact with a temperature difference of nearly $700K$ between the two components. The close-in component contributes about $19\,\%$ of the total luminosity in the triple system. Combining the radial velocity study together with our photometric solutions, the mass of the primary star and secondary one are calculated to be $M_1 = 1.784(\pm0.055)M_\odot$, $M_2 = 0.403(\pm0.012)M_\odot$. The evolutionary scenario of V921 Her is discussed. All times of light minimum of V921 Her available in the bibliography are taken into account and the $O - C$ curve is analyzed for the first time. The most probable fitting results are discussed in the paper, which also confirm the existence of a third component ($P_3=10.2$ year) around the binary system. The period of V921 Her is also undergoing a continuously rapid increase at a rate of $dP/dt=+2.79\times{10^{-7}}day\cdot year^{-1}$, which may due to mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one.

Band structure and spin texture of Bi$_2$Se$_3$/3d ferromagnetic metal interface

The spin-helical surface states in three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), such as Bi2Se3, are predicted to have superior efficiency in converting charge current into spin polarization. This property is said to be responsible for the giant spin-orbit torques observed in ferromagnetic metal/TI structures. In this work, using first-principles and model tight-binding calculations, we investigate the interface between the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and 3d-transition ferromagnetic metals Ni and Co. We find that the difference in the work functions of the topological insulator and the ferromagnetic metals shift the topological surface states down about 0.5 eV below the Fermi energy where the hybridization of these surface states with the metal bands destroys their helical spin structure. The band alignment of Bi2Se3 and Ni (Co) places the Fermi energy far in the conduction band of bulk Bi2Se3, where the spin of the carriers is aligned with the magnetization in the metal. Our results indicate that the topological surface states are unlikely to be responsible for the huge spin-orbit torque effect observed experimentally in these systems.

Fine detrending of raw Kepler and MOST photometric data of KIC 6950556 and HD 37633

We present a simple phenomenological method for detrending of raw Kepler and MOST photometry, which is illustrated by means of photometric data processing of two periodically variable chemically peculiar stars, KIC 6950556 and HD 37633. In principle, this method may be applied to any type of periodically variable objects and satellite or ground based photometries. As a by product, we have identified KIC 6950556 as a magnetic chemically peculiar star with an ACV type variability.

Thermal transport and non-equilibrium temperature drop across a magnetic nanostructured interface

In a number of current experiments in the field of spin-caloritronics a temperature gradient across a nanostructured interface is applied and spin-dependent transport phenomena are observed. However, a lack in the interpretation and knowledge let it unclear how the temperature drop across a magnetic nanostructured interface looks like where both phonons and electrons may contribute to thermal transport. We answer this question for the case of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) where the tunneling magneto Seebeck effect occurs. Nevertheless, our results can be extended to other nanostructured interfaces as well. Using an \textit{ab initio} method we explicitly calculate phonon and electron thermal conductance across the Fe/MgO/Fe-MTJs by using Green's function method. Further, by estimating the electron-phonon interaction in the Fe leads we are able to calculate the electron and phonon temperature profile across the Fe/MgO/Fe-MTJ. Our results show that there is an electron-phonon temperature imbalance at the Fe-MgO interfaces. In consequence, a revision of the interpretation of current experimental measurements might be necessary.

Computing the Least-core and Nucleolus for Threshold Cardinality Matching Games

Cooperative games provide a framework for fair and stable profit allocation in multi-agent systems. \emph{Core}, \emph{least-core} and \emph{nucleolus} are such solution concepts that characterize stability of cooperation. In this paper, we study the algorithmic issues on the least-core and nucleolus of threshold cardinality matching games (TCMG). A TCMG is defined on a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a threshold $T$, in which the player set is $V$ and the profit of a coalition $S\subseteq V$ is 1 if the size of a maximum matching in $G[S]$ meets or exceeds $T$, and 0 otherwise. We first show that for a TCMG, the problems of computing least-core value, finding and verifying least-core payoff are all polynomial time solvable. We also provide a general characterization of the least core for a large class of TCMG. Next, based on Gallai-Edmonds Decomposition in matching theory, we give a concise formulation of the nucleolus for a typical case of TCMG which the threshold $T$ equals $1$. When the threshold $T$ is relevant to the input size, we prove that the nucleolus can be obtained in polynomial time in bipartite graphs and graphs with a perfect matching.

Solving Multi-choice Secretary Problem in Parallel: An Optimal Observation-Selection Protocol

The classical secretary problem investigates the question of how to hire the best secretary from $n$ candidates who come in a uniformly random order. In this work we investigate a parallel generalizations of this problem introduced by Feldman and Tennenholtz [14]. We call it shared $Q$-queue $J$-choice $K$-best secretary problem. In this problem, $n$ candidates are evenly distributed into $Q$ queues, and instead of hiring the best one, the employer wants to hire $J$ candidates among the best $K$ persons. The $J$ quotas are shared by all queues. This problem is a generalized version of $J$-choice $K$-best problem which has been extensively studied and it has more practical value as it characterizes the parallel situation. Although a few of works have been done about this generalization, to the best of our knowledge, no optimal deterministic protocol was known with general $Q$ queues. In this paper, we provide an optimal deterministic protocol for this problem. The protocol is in the same style of the $1\over e$-solution for the classical secretary problem, but with multiple phases and adaptive criteria. Our protocol is very simple and efficient, and we show that several generalizations, such as the fractional $J$-choice $K$-best secretary problem and exclusive $Q$-queue $J$-choice $K$-best secretary problem, can be solved optimally by this protocol with slight modification and the latter one solves an open problem of Feldman and Tennenholtz [14]. In addition, we provide theoretical analysis for two typical cases, including the 1-queue 1-choice $K$-best problem and the shared 2-queue 2-choice 2-best problem. For the former, we prove a lower bound $1-O(\frac{\ln^2K}{K^2})$ of the competitive ratio. For the latter, we show the optimal competitive ratio is $\approx0.372$ while previously the best known result is 0.356 [14].

A transient solution for vesicle electrodeformation and relaxation

A transient analysis for vesicle deformation under DC electric fields is developed. The theory extends from a droplet model, with the additional consideration of a lipid membrane separating two fluids of arbitrary properties. For the latter, both a membrane-charging and a membrane-mechanical model are supplied. The vesicle is assumed to remain spheroidal in shape for all times. The main result is an ODE governing the evolution of the vesicle aspect ratio. The effects of initial membrane tension and pulse length are examined. The model prediction is extensively compared with experimental data, and is shown to accurately capture the system behavior in the regime of no or weak electroporation. More importantly, the comparison reveals that vesicle relaxation obeys a universal behavior regardless of the means of deformation. The process is governed by a single timescale that is a function of the vesicle initial radius, the fluid viscosity, and the initial membrane tension. This universal scaling law can be used to calculate membrane properties from experimental data.

A transient solution for droplet deformation under electric fields

A transient analysis to quantify droplet deformation under DC electric fields is presented. The full Taylor-Melcher leaky dielectric model is employed where the charge relaxation time is considered to be finite. The droplet is assumed to be spheroidal in shape for all times. The main result is an ODE governing the evolution of the droplet aspect ratio. The model is validated by extensively comparing predicted deformation with both previous theoretical and numerical studies, and with experimental data. Furthermore, the effects of parameters and stresses on deformation characteristics are systematically analyzed taking advantage of the explicit formulae on their contributions. The theoretical framework can be extended to study similar problems, e.g., vesicle electrodeformation and relaxation.

Controlled nanostructures at La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ thin film surfaces formed by STM lithography

Nanoscale lithography on La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin film surfaces has been performed by scanning tunneling microscopy under ambient conditions. From line-etching experiments we found that the line depth is increasing in a step-wise fashion with increasing bias voltage as well as with decreasing scan speed. On average, the depth of the etched lines is an integral multiple of the LSMO out-of-plane lattice constant about 0.4 nm. A minimum wall thickness of 1.5 nm was obtained between etched lines. We have utilized the ability to control the etched line depths to create complicated inverse-pyramid nanostructure. Our work shows the feasibility of using STM lithography to create controllable and complex nanoscale structures in LSMO thin film.

Scanning Tunneling Microscope Nanolithography on SrRuO3 Thin Film Surfaces

Nanoscale lithography on SrRuO3 (SRO) thin film surfaces has been performed by scanning tunneling microscopy under ambient conditions. The depth of etched lines increases with increasing bias voltage but it does not change significantly by increasing the tunneling current. The dependence of line width on bias voltage from experimental data is in agreement with theoretical calculation based on field-induced evaporation. Moreover, a three-square nanostructure was successfully created, showing the capability of fabricating nanodevices in SRO thin films.
