Spectroscopic ages for 4 million main-sequence dwarf stars from LAMOST DR10 estimated with data-driven approach

Stellar age determination for large samples of stars opens new avenues for a broad range of astronomical sciences. While precise stellar ages for evolved stars have been derived from large ground- and space-based stellar surveys, reliable age determination for cool main-sequence dwarf stars remains a challenge. In this work, we set out to estimate the age of dwarf stars from the LAMOST spectra with a data-driven approach. We build a training set by using wide binaries that the primary component has reliable isochrone age estimate thus gives the age of the secondary. This training set is further supplemented with field stars and cluster stars whose ages are known. We then train a data-driven model for inferring age from their spectra with the XGBoost algorithm. Given a spectral signal-to-noise ratio greater than 50, the age estimation precise to 10% to 25% for K-type stars, as younger stars have larger relative errors. Validations suggest that the underlying information used for our age estimation is largely attributed to the LAMOST spectral features of chemical abundances. It means our result is a manifestation of stellar chemical clock effectively acted on LAMOST spectra ($R\simeq1800$). Applying our model to the LAMOST DR10 yields a massive age catalog for $\sim4$ million dwarf stars. Statistical properties, such as the age distribution, age-abundance and age-stellar activity relations of the sample stars are discussed. The catalog is publicly accessible and can be helpful for extensive sciences from detection and characterization of Earth-like planets to Galactic archaeology.

Intergalactic Wandering Stars in the Local Universe: Theoretical Predictions for Their Distance and Luminosity Distribution

Intergalactic wandering stars (IWSs) within 10 Mpc remain a poorly explored area of astronomy. Such stars, if they exist, are supposed to be wandering objects as they are not bounded by the gravitational potential of any galaxy. We set out to conduct dedicated studies for unraveling such a wandering stellar population. As the first paper of the series, in the present work we model the distance distribution and luminosity function of IWSs formed via the Hills mechanism of the Galactic central massive black hole (GCMBH). We implement a numerical simulation to generate IWSs taking the ejection history of the GCMBH and the stellar evolution process into consideration, and present their luminosity function in the distance range of 200kpc - 10Mpc. Our results suggest that a few hundred thousand IWSs have been generated by the GCMBH via the Hills mechanism in the past 14 billion years. These IWSs have an apparent magnitude peaking at 30 to 35 mag in SDSS $r-$band, which are hard to detect. However, a few thousand of them at the bright end are detectable by upcoming wide-field deep surveys, such as China Space Station Telescope (CSST) and Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST). The forthcoming discovery of such a wandering stellar population will open a door for precise understanding of the matter constitution of the nearby intergalactic space and the dynamical history of galaxies in the local universe.

The controlled exciton transport of the Multi-chain system by cavity-dressed energy level crossings and anticrossings

The performance of various quantum devices is fundamentally linked to the control of exciton transport. To explore this, we study the exciton transport of the two-dimensional multi-chain systems with different coupling configurations in an optical cavity. Two types of the chains--the homogeneous and heterogeneous coupling chain, as well as two inter-chain coupling conformations--the square and triangular arrangements, are considered. The effects of the inter-chain coupling, the dimerization parameter, the cavity, the length and number of the chains on exciton transport are systematically investigated for different coupling configurations through the spectra, the Hopfield coeffcients, and the steady-state dynamics of the system. The results show that in the absence of a cavity the exciton transport currents and effciency are determined by the exciton distribution across the multi-chain system. However, when a cavity is introduced the exciton transport can be significantly enhanced or suppressed by the polariton formation at the cavity-dressed energy level crossings and anticrossings near zero-energy modes, where the coherent excitation and LandauZener transitions occur. Meanwhile, we discover that the discontinuous and extremal points in the second-order partial derivatives of the photon Hopfield coeffcients with respect to the inter-chain coupling and the dimerization parameter correspond respectively to the crossings and anticrossings at the extreme points of the photon occupation number. Additionally, exciton transport effciency is closely related to the odevity of both chain length and chain number, and exhibits oscillatory behaviour. This work provides critical insights into the exciton transport mechanism in multichain-cavity system and theoretical basis for designing high-erformance excitonic devices with tunable transport properties.

The PSF Smoothing Effect on Concentration-Related Parameters of High Redshift Galaxies in HST and JWST

We perform a comprehensive investigation of the PSF smoothing effect on the measurement of concentration-related parameters ($C$, Gini, $M_{20}$) of high redshift galaxies in the HST and JWST surveys. Our sample contains massive galaxies from the CANDELS/EGS survey (0 < z < 2), and the CEERS survey (1 < z < 3). The non-parametric concentration-related parameters ($C$, Gini, $M_{20}$) and the model-dependent parameters (n, Re) of these galaxies are derived from Statmorph and GALFIT, respectively. We try to evaluate the PSF smoothing effect by comparing the concentration-related parameters to the Sérsic index in both observations and mock images. We find that the concentration index is generally underestimated, especially for smaller galaxies with higher Sérsic index (eventually converging to the concentration index of the PSF). However, galaxies with lower Sérsic index ($n \leq 1$) or larger relative size are less affected by the PSF smoothing effect. The Gini coefficient and the absolute $M_{20}$ statistic also show similar behaviour as the concentration index. Caution should be taken for the possible correction of the concentration-related parameters, where both the relative size and the Sérsic index of the galaxy are important. Compared to the HST images, the PSF smoothing is much less severe for images in the CEERS survey due to the much higher spatial resolution. In fact, it is better to use the Sérsic index rather than the non-parametric morphology indicators to trace the light concentration for galaxies at high redshifts. From the single Sérsic modelling of the HST and JWST images, we also confirm that galaxies at higher redshift are more compact with smaller $R_e$. The lower mass galaxies are more disc-like ($n\sim1$) compared to the higher mass galaxies that are more spheroid dominated ($n\sim3$).
