Multiple superconducting phases and order-parameter evolution in pressurized UTe$_2$

The recently discovered heavy-fermion spin-triplet superconductor candidate UTe$_2$ provides a rich platform for unconventional pairing and topological phenomena. However, limited has been known about its superconducting order parameters and their evolution with control parameters, largely due to the lack of appropriate symmetry-sensitive detections. Here, we report comprehensive point-contact spectroscopy measurements of pressurized UTe$_2$ on the (0~0~1) surface. The observation of Andreev bound states strongly suggests the presence of a $p_z$ component in the superconducting order parameters. Quantitative analysis based on an extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model unveils the superconducting order parameters with a finite odd-$k_z$ component (e.g. $B_{2u}$ or $B_{3u}$) for both ambient and pressurized UTe$_2$. Remarkably, the multiple superconducting phases can be distinguished by a single parameter $\langle Δ_{z}\rangle/\langleΔ_{x(y)}\rangle$, the relative weight between the $p_z$-wave and $p_{x(y)}$-wave pairings. These findings place stringent constraints on the pairing symmetry and provide essential spectroscopic signatures for distinguishing pressure-induced multiple superconducting phases in UTe$_2$.

Quantum-geometry-induced anomalous Hall effect in nonunitary superconductors and application to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The polar Kerr effect and the closely related anomalous charge Hall effect are among the most distinguishing signatures of the superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, as well as in several other compounds. These effects are often thought to be derived from chiral superconducting pairing, and different mechanisms have been invoked for the explanation. However, the intrinsic mechanisms proposed previously often involve unrealistically strong interband Cooper pairing. In this study we show that, even without interband pairing, nonunitary superconducting states can support intrinsic anomalous charge Hall effect, thanks to the quantum geometric properties of the Bloch electrons. The key here is to have a normal-state spin Hall effect, for which a nonzero spin-orbit coupling is essential. A finite charge Hall effect then naturally arises at the onset of a spin-polarized nonunitary superconducting pairing. It depends on both the spin polarization and the normal-state electron Berry curvature, the latter of which is the imaginary part of the quantum geometric tensor of the Bloch states. Applying our results to the weakly-paired Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ we conclude that, if the reported Kerr effect is of intrinsic origin, the superconducting state is most likely nonunitary and has odd-parity. Our theory may be generalized to other superconductors that exhibit polar Kerr effect.

Finite-Size Scaling Analysis of the Planck's Quantum-Driven Integer Quantum Hall Transition in Spin-$1/2$ Kicked Rotor Model

The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) model is a prototypical system in the research of quantum chaos. In a spin-$1/2$ QKR, tuning the effective Planck parameter realizes a series of transitions between dynamical localization phases, which closely resembles the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect and the plateau transitions. In this work, we devise and apply the finite-size scaling analysis to the transitions in the spin-$1/2$ QKR model. We obtain an estimate of the critical exponent at the transition point, $ν=2.62(9)$, which is consistent with the IQH plateau transition universality class. We also give a precise estimate of the universal diffusion rate at the metallic critical state, $σ^{*}=0.3253(12)$.

Hidden anomalous Hall effect in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ with chiral superconductivity dominated by the Ru $d_{xy}$ orbital

The polar Kerr effect in superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ implies finite ac anomalous Hall conductivity. Since intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is not expected for a chiral superconducting pairing developed on the single Ru $d_{xy}$ orbital, multiorbital chiral pairing actively involving the Ru $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals has been proposed as a potential mechanism. Here we propose that AHE could still arise even if the chiral superconductivity is predominantly driven by the $d_{xy}$ orbital. This is demonstrated through two separate models which take into account subdominant orbitals in the Cooper pairing, one involving the oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals in the RuO$_2$ plane, and another the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. In both models, finite orbital mixing between the dominant $d_{xy}$ and the other orbitals may induce inter-orbital pairing between them, and the resultant states support intrinsic AHE, with Kerr rotation angles that could potentially reconcile with the experimental observation. Our proposal therefore sheds new light on the microscopic pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We also show that intrinsic Hall effect is generally absent for non-chiral states such as $\mathcal{S}+i\mathcal{D}$, $\mathcal{D}+i\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{D}+i\mathcal{G}$, which provides a clear constraint on the symmetry of the superconducting order in this material.

Designable ductility of a nano-network from few-layered graphene bonded with benzene: A molecular dynamics study

In nanoscale, motion operation of a nano-objective is usually realized by displacement load, which put forwards high requirement for ductility of material. Since pristine graphene has low ductility, once the stretching strain exceeds its critical value, it breaks in brittle style and loses ability to bear the external load quickly. Herein, to improve the ductility, a corrugated sandwich carbon nano-network model based on few-layered graphene is proposed, in which the two surface layers are bonded with several corrugated core layers via benzene molecules. Effects of factors such as the geometry of the carbon network, temperature, and strain rate, on the ductility are evaluated by molecular dynamics simulations. Conclusions are drawn for potential application of the new two-dimensional material with designable ductility.

Spontaneous surface current in multi-component cubic superconductors with time-reversal symmetry breaking

In this work we present a comprehensive study of the spontaneous currents in time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) multi-component superconductors with cubic crystalline symmetry. We argue, not limiting to cubic lattices, that spontaneous current on certain high-symmetry surfaces can exist only if the TRSB pairing simultaneously breaks a certain pair of mirror symmetries. This is shown to have exact correspondence with the Gingzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is verified by numerical Bogoliubov de-Gennes (BdG) calculations. In the course we extend the BdG to include effects of gap anisotropy and surface disorder, both of which could lead to a much suppressed current. The GL theory has been known to describe well the spontaneous current. However, we highlight a special case where it becomes less adequate, and show that a refined effective theory for low temperatures is needed. These results could shed light on the phenomenology of cubic superconductors such as U$_{1-x}$Th$_x$Be$_{13}$, the filled skutterudites PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ and related compounds.

Interband interference effects at the edge of a multiband chiral p-wave superconductor

Chiral superconductors support chiral edge modes and potentially spontaneous edge currents at their boundaries. Motivated by the putative multiband chiral p-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we study the influence of the interference between different bands at the edges, which may appear in the presence of moderate edge disorder or in edge tunneling measurements. We show that interband interference can strongly modify the measurable quantities at the edges when the order parameter exhibits phase difference between the bands. This is illustrated by investigating the edge dispersion and the edge current distribution in the presence of interband mixing, as well as the conductance at a tunneling junction. The results are discussed in connection with the putative chiral p-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In passing, we also discuss similar interference effects in multiband models with other pairing symmetries.
