Non-Hermitian Twisting Theory under the open boundary condition

The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a hallmark of non-Hermitian system, yet its generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ) description is restricted to periodic systems. We develop a site-resolved theory via a local scaling transformation (LST), introducing local twisting $T_n$ to quantify metric operator $\xi$ nontriviality. This elucidates the NHSE's origin and uncovers the generalized multiple-channel skin effect (MCSE). Exploiting $T_n$'s translational independence, we define the Zahlen-Brillouin Zone (ZBZ), extending non-Hermitian band theory to nonperiodic and disordered lattices. Furthermore, we unify the $\xi$ with GBZ Riemannian geometry, establishing the metric and state correspondence (MSC) as the principle for real-space localization. With a global skin index $\mathbf\Gamma$ for phase transitions, our results provide a universal paradigm for non-Hermitian physics in both crystalline and amorphous media.

Do We Have Sufficient Knowledge of the Galactic Foreground Emission in Cosmic Microwave Background Science?

Galactic foreground emission plays a key role in cosmic microwave background (CMB) science, particularly for detecting primordial gravitational waves. A well-known lesson is the ``dust wave'' identified by BICEP2 in 2014, which was ruled out through a more careful analysis of foreground emission. To date, most estimates of Galactic foreground emission have relied on the assumption that for each line of sight, only one component is considered per emission mechanism. However, the results in this work suggest that more complex modeling -- particularly involving multiple components arising from either line-of-sight complexity or pixel mixing -- may be necessary to fully account for Galactic foregrounds, including dust and other components. More interestingly, the only available two-component dust estimate also fails due to oversimplified emission parameters, although it is conceptually superior to single-component alternatives. These results yield three key conclusions: (1) Due to the intrinsic three-dimensional complexity of the Galactic environment, where physical conditions vary with both distance and direction, the actual radiation from Galactic foreground components cannot be accurately characterized by single-component models. (2) Consequently, CMB experiments require more frequency bands to resolve these components. (3) Spatial variations of foreground emission parameters should not be simplified, because in this work, all such simplifications are found to degrade the estimates significantly.

Autonomous Discovery of the Ising Model's Critical Parameters with Reinforcement Learning

Traditional methods for determining critical parameters are often influenced by human factors. This research introduces a physics-inspired adaptive reinforcement learning framework that enables agents to autonomously interact with physical environments, simultaneously identifying both the critical temperature and various types of critical exponents in the Ising model with precision. Interestingly, our algorithm exhibits search behavior reminiscent of phase transitions, efficiently converging to target parameters regardless of initial conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that this method significantly outperforms traditional approaches, particularly in environments with strong perturbations. This study not only incorporates physical concepts into machine learning to enhance algorithm interpretability but also establishes a new paradigm for scientific exploration, transitioning from manual analysis to autonomous AI discovery.

Evaluation of the single-component thermal dust emission model in CMB experiments

It is well known that multiple Galactic thermal dust emission components may exist along the line of sight, but a single-component approximation is still widely used, since a full multi-component estimation requires a large number of frequency bands that are only available with future experiments. In light of this, we present a reliable, quantitative, and sensitive criterion to test the goodness of all kinds of dust emission estimations. This can not only give a definite answer to the quality of current single-component approximations; but also help determine preconditions of future multi-component estimations. Upon the former, previous works usually depend on a more complicated model to improve the single-component dust emission; however, our method is free from any additional model, and is sensitive enough to directly discover a substantial discrepancy between the Planck HFI data (100-857 GHz) and associated single-component dust emission estimations. This is the first time that the single-component estimation is ruled out by the data itself. For the latter, a similar procedure will be able to answer two important questions for estimating the complicated Galactic emissions: the number of necessary foreground components and their types.

Constraints on large-scale polarization in northern hemisphere

Present cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations have significantly advanced our understanding of the universe's origin, especially with primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). Currently, ground-based CMB telescopes are mainly located in the southern hemisphere, leaving an untapped potential for observations in the northern hemisphere. In this work, we investigate the perspective of a northern hemisphere CMB polarization telescope (NHT) to detect PGWs and present mock data for such a project. We forecast the detection sensitivity on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r of NHT and compare it with the existed ground-based experiments, also search for optimal experimental configurations that can achieve the best sensitivity of r. Our results indicate that, considering realistic experimental conditions, the first year of NHT observations combined with Planck can achieve a precision of \sigma (r)= 0.015, reaching the level of BICEP2/Keck, with significant potential for improvement with subsequent instrumentation parameter enhancements.

Implications of scattering for CMB foreground emission modelling

Context. The extreme precision and accuracy of forthcoming observations of CMB temperature and polarization anisotropies, aiming to detect the tiny signatures of primordial gravitational waves or of light relic particles beyond the standard three light neutrinos, requires commensurate precision in the modelling of foreground Galactic emission that contaminates CMB observations. Aims. We evaluate the impact of second-order effects in Galactic foreground emission due to Thomson scattering off interstellar free electrons and to Rayleigh scattering off interstellar dust particles. Methods. We use existing sky survey data and models of the distribution of free electrons and dust within the Milky Way to estimate the amplitude and power spectra of the emission originating from radiation scattered either by free electrons or by dust grains at CMB frequencies. Results. Both processes generate corrections to the total emission that are small compared to direct emission, and are small enough not to pose problems for current-generation observations. Conclusions. However, B-modes generated by Thomson scattering of incoming radiation by interstellar free electrons at CMB frequencies are within an order of magnitude of the sensitivity of the most advanced forthcoming CMB telescopes, and might require more precise evaluation in the future.

A narrow-band parameterization for the stochastic gravitational wave background

In light of the non-perturbative resonance effects that may occur during inflation, we introduce a parametrization for the power spectrum of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) characterized by narrow-band amplification. We utilize the universal $\Omega_\text{GW}\propto k^3$ infrared limit, applicable to a wide array of gravitational wave sources, to devise a robust yet straightforward parameterization optimized for Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analyses. This parameterization is demonstrated through select examples where its application is pertinent, and we discuss the advantages of this approach over traditional parametrizations for narrow-band scenarios. To evaluate the sensitivity of our proposed model parameters, we apply a mock likelihood based on the CMB-Stage4 data. Furthermore, we explicate the computational process for the mapping relationship between the foundational model parameters and our parameterized framework, using a two-field inflation model that resonantly amplifies gravitational waves (GWs) as an example.

Recent experimental progress on probing Lorentz Violation in pure gravity for d=6

Short-range experiment with striped design of the test and source masses offers uniquely sensitive probes for Lorentz Violation. In our previous work, we proposed to combine the horizontally and vertically striped experiments to constrain the violating parameters. Here, we further point out adopting the vertically striped structure with the experimental setup placed at two azimuth angles, which has more experimental operability. For the experiment, we have completed the assembly and measurement of the torsion pendulum.

Topological properties in the non-Hermitian tetramerized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices

In this paper, we study the topological properties of the non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice by periodically introducing onsite imaginary potentials in the manner of ($i\gamma_1$, $-i\gamma_2$, $-i\gamma_1$, $i\gamma_2$) where $\gamma_1$ and $\gamma_2$ are the imaginary potential strengths. Results show that by changing the lattice to a tetramerized non-Hermitian system, such imaginary potentials induce the nontrivial transition of the topological properties of the SSH system. First, the topologically-nontrivial region is extended, followed by the non-Hermitian spontaneous breaking of the anti-$\cal PT$ symmetry. In addition, new edge state appears, but its locality is different from the state induced by the Hermitian SSH lattice. If such potentials are strong enough, the bulk states of this system can become purely imaginary states. We believe that these imaginary potentials play special roles in modulating the topological properties of the non-Hermitian SSH lattice.

CMB polarization analysis on circular scans

Most cosmic microwave background experiments observe the sky along circular or near-circular scans on the celestial sphere. For such experiments, we show that simple linear systems connect the Fourier spectra of temperature and polarization time-ordered data to the harmonic spectra of T, E and B on the sphere. We show how this can be used to estimate those spectra directly from data streams. In addition, the inversion of the linear system that connects Fourier spectra to angular power spectra offers a natural way to down-weight those modes of observation most contaminated by low-frequency noise, ground pickup, or fluctuations of atmospheric emission on large angular scale. This can be of interest for the analysis of future CMB data sets, as an alternative or in complement to other approaches that involve map-making as a first analysis step.

Topological properties of the dimerized Kitaev chain with long-range hopping and pairing terms

We investigate the topological properties of a dimerized Kitaev chain with long-range interactions, including the intercell hopping and superconducting pairing terms. It is found that even only when the intercell hopping term appears, the size of the energy gap, the proportion of topological phases, and the topological phase transition can be modulated. The notable result is that they lead to a new Kitaev-like phase featured by the twofold-degenerated Majorana zero-energy edge states. Next in the presence of the intercell superconducting pairing term, this kind of Majorana phase can be magnified. This work provides new proposals to realize the twofold degenerated Majorana modes based on the intercell hopping and superconducting pairing terms of the dimerized Kitaev chain.
