Scalar-induced gravitational waves from inflation with symmetry breaking

We investigate scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in an inflationary model with symmetry breaking, in which charged scalar fields are coupled to an isotropic triplet of Abelian gauge fields through a kinetic function. Such SIGWs can be enhanced to a detectable level when the mixing between the inflaton and gauge-field perturbations is sufficiently large. We find that the longitudinal mode and the charge-dependent mixing between perturbations become relevant only when the gauge-field excitation occurs sufficiently late during inflation. In this regime, the corresponding SIGWs are shifted to ultra-high frequencies, typically can around the GHz band. We show that the parameters characterizing the effects of the longitudinal mode and charge-dependent mixing affect the signal in qualitatively different ways. This provides characteristic signatures for distinguishing the neutral case from the charged one through the frequency profile of the stochastic gravitational-wave background.

Circularly polarized gravitational waves from parity-violating scalar-tensor theory

We study both primordial gravitational waves (GWs) and scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in a class of the parity-violating scalar-tensor (PVST) theory, of which the Lagrangian is the linear combination of seven ghost-free parity-violating scalar-tensor monomials dubbed the "Qi-Xiu" Lagrangians. At linear order, we obtain the quadratic action for tensor perturbations and show that parity-violating terms associated with L_1, L_2, L_5, L_6, and L_7 render the tensor propagation polarization dependent, leading to chiral primordial spectra and a nonvanishing degree of circular polarization. At second order, we derive the equation of motion for SIGWs and identify the explicit parity-violating source terms. In particular, L_3 and L_4 enter exclusively through the source term for SIGWs, allowing parity violation to arise even when the linear GWs' propagation remains effectively general-relativity-like. During the radiation-dominated era, we compute the fractional energy density of SIGWs for both monochromatic and log-normal curvature power spectra. We find that, around the peak frequency, SIGWs in PVST gravity exhibit characteristic deviations from those in general relativity, resulting in a nonzero degree of circular polarization.

Scalar induced gravitational waves in chiral scalar-tensor theory of gravity

We study the scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) from a chiral scalar-tensor theory of gravity. The parity-violating (PV) Lagrangian contains the Chern-Simons (CS) term and PV scalar-tensor terms, which are built of the quadratic Riemann tensor term and first-order derivatives of a scalar field. We consider SIGWs in two cases, in which the semi-analytic expression to calculate SIGWs can be obtained. Then, we calculate the fractional energy density of SIGWs with a monochromatic power spectrum for the curvature perturbation. We find that the SIGWs in chiral scalar-tensor gravity behave differently from those in GR before and after the peak frequency, which results in a large degree of circular polarization.

Scalar induced gravitational waves in metric teleparallel gravity with the Nieh-Yan term

We investigate the scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in metric teleparallel gravity with the Nieh-Yan (NY) term, which results in parity violation during the radiation-dominated era. By solving the equations of motion of linear scalar perturbations from both the metric and the tetrad fields, we obtain the corresponding analytic expressions. Then, we calculate the SIGWs in metric teleparallel gravity with the NY term and evaluate the energy density of SIGWs with a monochromatic power spectrum numerically. We find that the spectrum of the energy density of SIGWs in metric teleparallel gravity with the NY term is significantly different from that in general relativity (GR), which makes metric teleparallel gravity distinguishable from GR.

Scalar induced gravitational waves in symmetric teleparallel gravity with a parity-violating term

Gravitational waves (GWs) are useful to test gravitational theories and to probe the physics in the early universe. In this paper, we investigate the scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in symmetric teleparallel gravity with a parity-violating term. The presence of the parity-violating term leads to the velocity birefringence effect of the SIGWs. However, after taking into account the observational constraints on the speed of GWs, the contribution from the parity-violating term to SIGWs is negligible. Nevertheless, the contribution to SIGWs from the perturbations of the connection can be significant, and results in a multipeak structure in the energy density of SIGWs. This feature makes the symmetric teleparallel gravity distinguishable from the general relativity.

Scalar induced gravitational waves from Chern-Simons gravity during inflation era

We investigate the scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in the Chern-Simons (CS) gravity with a dynamical scalar field during slow roll inflation. Due to the parity violation in the CS term, the SIGWs are generally polarized, which are effectively characterized by the degree of circular polarization. We derive the semianalytic expression to evaluate the power spectra and the degree of circular polarization of the SIGWs, which receive contributions from the general relativity and the parity-violating term, respectively. We find that the correction from the parity-violating CS term is negligible on large scales, which means that the degree of circular polarization of SIGWs is very small.

Circularly polarized scalar induced gravitational waves from the Chern-Simons modified gravity

We investigate the scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in the Chern-Simons (CS) modified gravity during the radiation dominated era. The SIGWs are circularly polarized, which provide us a tool to test the possible parity violation in the early universe. We derive the semianalytic expressions to evaluate the fractional energy density of the SIGWs, $Ω_{\mathrm{GW}}$, which receives contributions from the general relativity (GR) and the correction due to the parity-violating term, respectively. We find that the degree of the circular polarization of the SIGWs can be as large as of order unity, although the contribution to $Ω_{\mathrm{GW}}$ from the CS term is at most of the same order as that from the GR.

Extended geometry of Gambini-Olmedo-Pullin polymer black hole and its quasinormal spectrum

In this paper we systematically study a model of spherically symmetric polymer black holes recently proposed by Gambini, Olmedo, and Pullin (GOP). Within the framework of loop quantum gravity, the quantum parameters in the GOP model depend on the minimal area gap and the size of the discretization of the physical states. In this model, a spacelike transition surface takes place of the classical singularity. By means of coordinate transformations, we first extend the metric to the white hole region, and find that the geometric structure of the quantum black hole is similar to the wormhole structure, and the radius of the most quantum region is equal to the wormhole radius. In addition, we show that the energy conditions are violated not only at throat, but also at horizons and the spatial infinities. In order to show how the quantum effects affect the spacetimes, we calculate the Ricci and Kretschmann scalars at different places. It turns out that, as expected, the most quantum region is at the throat. Finally, we consider the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of massless scalar field perturbations, electromagnetic field perturbations, and axial gravitational perturbations. QNMs in the Eikonal limits are also considered. As anticipated, the spectrum of QNMs deviates from that of the classical case due to quantum effects. Interestingly, our results show that the quasinormal frequencies of the perturbations share the same qualitative tendency while setting quantum parameters with various values in this effective model, even if the potential deviations are different with different spins.

Rotations of the polarization of a gravitational wave propagating in Universe

In this paper, we study the polarization of a gravitational wave (GW) emitted by an astrophysical source at a cosmic distance propagating through the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walk universe. By considering the null geodesic deviations, we first provide a definition of the polarization of the GW in terms of the Weyl scalars with respect to a parallelly-transported frame along the null geodesics, and then show explicitly that, due to different effects of the expansion of the universe on the two polarization modes, the so-called "+" and "$\times$" modes, the polarization angle of the GW changes generically, when it is propagating through the curved background. By direct computations of the polarization angle, we show that different epochs, radiation-, matter- and $Λ$-dominated, have different effects on the polarization. In particular, for a GW emitted by a binary system, we find explicitly the relation between the change of the polarization angle $|Δφ|$ and the redshift $z_s$ of the source in different epochs. In the $Λ$CDM model, we find that the order of $|Δφ|{η_0 F}$ is typically $O(10^{-3})$ to $O(10^3)$, depending on the values of $z_s$, where $η_0$ is the (comoving) time of the current universe, and $F\equiv\Big(\frac{5}{256}\frac{1}{τ_{obs}}\Big)^{3/8}\left(G_NM_c\right)^{-5/8}$ with $τ_{obs}$ and $M_c$ being, respectively, the time to coalescence in the observer's frame and the chirp mass of the binary system.

Theoretical and observational constraints on regularized 4$D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Regularized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory of gravity in four dimensions is a new attempt to include nontrivial contributions of Gauss-Bonnet term. In this paper, we make a detailed analysis on possible constraints of the model parameters of the theory from recent cosmological observations, and some theoretical constraints as well. Our results show that the theory with vanishing bare cosmological constant, $Λ_0$, is ruled out by the current observational value of $w_{de}$, and the observations of GW170817 and GRB 170817A as well. For nonvanishing bare cosmological constant, instead, our results show that the current observation of the speed of GWs measured by GW170817 and GRB 170817A would place a constraints on $\tildeα$, a dimensionless parameter of the theory, as $-7.78\times10^{-16}\le \tildeα \leq 3.33\times10^{-15}$.
