Pressure-Induced Superconducting-like Transition in the $\it d$-wave Altermagnet Candidate CsV$_2$Se$_2$O

Altermagnetism generates exchange-type spin splitting without net magnetization and, in its $\it d$-wave form, resembles the angular symmetry of unconventional $\it d$-wave superconductivity. Whether this correspondence bears directly on superconducting instabilities in real correlated materials remains open. Here we study the quasi-two-dimensional vanadium oxychalcogenide CsV$_2$Se$_2$O (CVSO), a square-net $\it d$-wave altermagnet candidate, through combined experimental and theoretical investigation of its lattice structure, electronic structure and transport properties. At ambient pressure, CVSO is a weakly insulating parent state with a density-wave-like anomaly near 100 K, and its bulk properties are most consistent with a G-type compensated antiferromagnetic background. Under compression, the density-wave-like feature is suppressed, the magnetoresistance evolves from predominantly negative to positive, and a superconducting-like resistive downturn emerges below about 3 K. This low-temperature anomaly is reproducible across samples and pressure media, and is suppressed by magnetic field. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction reveals no symmetry lowering, whereas does show a pronounced compressibility anomaly over the same pressure range. CVSO thus reveals a pressure-tuned phase diagram in which a reconstructed weakly insulating parent state gives way to strange-metal-like transport and superconducting-like behavior, echoing broader phenomenology associated with unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and nickelates.

Disorder-mediated linear and nonlinear magnetotransport in the charge-density-wave material ${\rm Ta_2NiSe_7 }$

We report disorder-mediated first-order linear and higher-order nonlinear (magneto-)transport of Ta$_2$NiSe$_7$ (TNS) in the charge-density-wave (CDW) regime. CDW transition temperature ($T_{CDW}$) and carrier density are proportional and inversely proportional to residual resistance ratio of samples, respectively. Such relation helps to understand the unique CDW order therein. High-$T_{CDW}$ TNS exhibits negative first-harmonic magnetoresistance (MR$^{1ω}$) under a magnetic field ($B$) parallel to the direction of alternating current ($I^ω$), which may arise from the anomalous velocity induced by the Berry curvature of three-dimensional topological bands near the Fermi level. As $T_{CDW}$ drops, a positive-to-negative MR$^{1ω}$ transition is observed with decreasing perpendicular $B$, which is likely due to the contribution of Zeeman effect on current pathways in the disordered system. Moreover, interestingly, the second-harmonic nonlinear signals are suppressed, while the third-harmonic signals are significant and sensitive to both $B$ and $T_{CDW}$. Such observations, together with scaling analysis, suggest the quantum geometry quadrupole at play and the modulation of disorder on third-order nonlinearity. Our results pave an avenue for tailoring distinct-order magnetoresistive phases in disordered topological materials.

Vortex entropy and superconducting fluctuations in ultrathin underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ superconductor

Vortices in superconductors can help identify emergent phenomena but certain fundamental aspects of vortices, such as their entropy, remain poorly understood. Here, we study the vortex entropy in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ by measuring both magneto-resistivity and Nernst effect on ultrathin flakes ($\le$2 unit-cell). We extract the London penetration depth from the magneto-transport measurements on samples with different doping levels. It reveals that the superfluid phase stiffness $ρ_s$ scales linearly with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, down to the extremely underdoped case. On the same batch of ultrathin flakes, we measure the Nernst effect via on-chip thermometry. Together, we obtain the vortex entropy and find that it decays exponentially with $T_c$ or $ρ_s$. We further analyze the Nernst signal above $T_c$ in the framework of Gaussian superconducting fluctuations. The combination of electrical and thermoelectric measurements in the two-dimensional limit provides fresh insight into high temperature superconductivity.

Heteromoiré Engineering on Magnetic Bloch Transport in Twisted Graphene Superlattices

Localized electrons subject to applied magnetic fields can restart to propagate freely through the lattice in delocalized magnetic Bloch states (MBSs) when the lattice periodicity is commensurate with the magnetic length. Twisted graphene superlattices with moiré wavelength tunability enable experimental access to the unique delocalization in a controllable fashion. Here we report the observation and characterization of high-temperature Brown-Zak (BZ) oscillations which come in two types, 1/B and B periodicity, originating from the generation of integer and fractional MBSs, in the twisted bilayer and trilayer graphene superlattices, respectively. Coexisting periodic-in-1/B oscillations assigned to different moiré wavelengths, are dramatically observed in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene, which may arise from angle-disorder-induced in-plane heteromoiré superlattices. Moreover, the vertical stacking of heteromoiré supercells in double-twisted trilayer graphene results in a mega-sized superlattice. The exotic superlattice contributes to the periodic-in-B oscillation and dominates the magnetic Bloch transport.

Temperature-sensitive spatial distribution of defects in PdSe2 flakes

Defect engineering plays an important role in tailoring the electronic transport properties of van der Waals materials. However, it is usually achieved through tuning the type and concentration of defects, rather than dynamically reconfiguring their spatial distribution. Here, we report temperature-sensitive spatial redistribution of defects in PdSe2 thin flakes through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observe that the spatial distribution of Se vacancies in PdSe2 flakes exhibits a strong anisotropic characteristic at 80 K, and that this orientation-dependent feature is weakened when temperature is raised. Moreover, we carry out transport measurements on PdSe2 thin flakes and show that the anisotropic features of carrier mobility and phase coherent length are also sensitive to temperature. Combining with theoretical analysis, we conclude that temperature-driven defect spatial redistribution could interpret the temperature-sensitive electrical transport behaviors in PdSe2 thin flakes. Our work highlights that engineering spatial distribution of defects in the van der Waals materials, which has been overlooked before, may open up a new avenue to tailor the physical properties of materials and explore new device functionalities.
