Direct observation of multiple conduction-band minima in high-performance thermoelectric SnSe

We report time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on SnSe which currently attracts great interest due to its extremely high thermoelectric performance. Laser-assisted photoemission signals are observed within $\pm$20 fs of the pump pulse arrival. Around 30-50 fs after the photoexcitation, the conduction band minima are not populated by the photoexcited electrons while the valence bands are considerably broadened. In going from 90 fs to 550 fs after the photoexcitation, the photoexcited carriers are decayed into the multiple conduction band minima. The observed conduction bands are consistent with the band structure calculations. The multiple conduction minima suggest possibility of high and anisotropic thermoelectric performance of n-type SnSe single crystal if it is realized.

Detecting electron-phonon couplings during photo-induced phase transition

Photo-induced phase transitions have been intensively studied owing to the ability to control a material of interest in the ultrafast manner, which can induce exotic phases unable to be attained at equilibrium. However, the key mechanisms are still under debate, and it has currently been a central issue how the couplings between the electron, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom are evolving during photo-induced phase transitions. Here, we develop a new analysis method, frequency-domain angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, to gain precise insight into electron-phonon couplings during photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions for Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$. We demonstrate that multiple coherent phonons generated by displacive excitations show band-selective coupling to the electrons. Furthermore, we find that the lattice modulation corresponding to the 2 THz phonon mode, where Ta lattice is sheared along the a-axis, is the most relevant for the photo-induced semimetallic state.

Coherent Averaging: an Alternative to the Average Hamiltonian Theory

Line-narrowing by periodic modulation of nuclear spin interaction Hamiltonians is the central element of various experimental techniques in NMR spectroscopy. In this study, we present a theoretical formulation of coherent averaging to calculate the heights of narrowed spectral peaks. This concept is experimentally demonstrated using proton spectra of solids obtained under fast magic-angle spinning.
