Thermally Driven Topology in Chiral Magnets

Chiral magnets give rise to the anti-symmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, which induces topological nontrivial textures such as magnetic skyrmions. The topology is characterized by integer values of the topological charge. In this work, we performed the Monte-Carlo calculation of a two-dimensional model of the chiral magnet. A surprising upturn of the topological charge is identified at high fields and high temperatures. This upturn is closely related to thermal fluctuations at the atomic scale, and is explained by a simple physical picture based on triangulation of the lattice. This emergent topology is also explained by a field-theoretic analysis using $CP^{1}$ formalism.

Skyrmions in Magnetic Multilayers

Symmetry breaking together with strong spin-orbit interaction give rise to many exciting phenomena within condensed matter physics. A recent example is the existence of chiral spin textures, which are observed in magnetic systems lacking inversion symmetry. These chiral spin textures, including domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, are both fundamentally interesting and technologically promising. For example, they can be driven very efficiently by electrical currents, and exhibit many new physical properties determined by their real-space topological characteristics. Depending on the details of the competing interactions, these spin textures exist in different parameter spaces. However, the governing mechanism underlying their physical behaviors remain essentially the same. In this review article, the fundamental topological physics underlying these chiral spin textures, the key factors for materials optimization, and current developments and future challenges will be discussed. In the end, a few promising directions that will advance the development of skyrmion based spintronics will be highlighted.

Direct imaging of a zero-field target skyrmion and its polarity switch in a chiral magnetic nanodisk

A target skyrmion is a flux-closed spin texture that has two-fold degeneracy and is promising as a binary state in next generation universal memories. Although its formation in nanopatterned chiral magnets has been predicted, its observation has remained challenging. Here, we use off-axis electron holography to record images of target skyrmions in a 160-nm-diameter nanodisk of the chiral magnet FeGe. We compare experimental measurements with numerical simulations, demonstrate switching between two stable degenerate target skyrmion ground states that have opposite polarities and rotation senses and discuss the observed switching mechanism.

Surface buckling of phosphorene materials: determination, origin and influence on electronic structure

The surface structure of phosphorene crystals materials is determined using surface sensitive dynamical micro-spot low energy electron diffraction (μLEED) analysis using a high spatial resolution low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) system. Samples of (\textit{i}) crystalline cleaved black phosphorus (BP) at 300 K and (\textit{ii}) exfoliated few-layer phosphorene (FLP) of about 10 nm thicknes, which were annealed at 573 K in vacuum were studied. In both samples, a significant surface buckling of 0.22 Å and 0.30 Å, respectively, is measured, which is one order of magnitude larger than previously reported. Using first principle calculations, the presence of surface vacancies is attributed not only to the surface buckling in BP and FLP, but also the previously reported intrinsic hole doping of phosphorene materials.

Spin Josephson effects in Exchange coupled Anti-ferromagnets

The energy of exchange coupled antiferromagnetic insulators (AFMIs) is a periodic function of the relative in-plane orientation of the Néel vector fields. We show that this leads to oscillations in the relative magnetization of exchange coupled AFMIs separated by a thin metallic barrier. These oscillations pump a spin current ($I_{S}$) through the metallic spacer that is proportional to the rate of change of the relative in-plane orientation of the Néel vector fields. By considering spin-transfer torque induced by a spin chemical potential ($V_{S}$) at one of the interfaces, we predict non-Ohmic $I_{S}$-$V_{S}$ characteristics of AFMI exchange coupled hetero-structures, which leads to a non-local voltage across a spin-orbit coupled metallic spacer.

Topological Charge Analysis of Ultrafast Single Skyrmion Creation

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial spin textures of potential interest for future information storage applications, and for such purposes, the control and understanding of single skyrmion creation is required. A scheme is analyzed to create single Néel-type and Bloch-type skyrmions in helimagnetic thin films utilizing the dynamical excitations induced by the Oersted field and the spin transfer torque given by a vertically injected spin-polarized current. A topological charge analysis using a lattice version of the topological charge provides insight into the locally triggered transition from a trivial to a non-trivial topological spin texture of the Néel or Bloch type skyrmion. The topological protection of the magnetic skyrmion is determined by the symmetric Heisenberg exchange energy. The critical switching current density is $\sim10^{7}\thinspace\textrm{A/cm}^{2}$, which decreases with the easy-plane type uniaxial anisotropy and thermal fluctuations. In-plane spin polarization of the injected current performs better than out-of-plane polarization, and it provides ultrafast switching times (within 100 ps) and reliable switching outcomes.

U(1) symmetry of the spin-orbit coupled Hubbard model on the Kagome lattice

We study the symmetry properties of the single-band Hubbard model with general spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the Kagome lattice. We show that the global U(1) spin-rotational symmetry is present in the Hubbard Hamiltonian owing to the inversion symmetry centered at sites. The corresponding spin Hamiltonian has, therefore, the SO(2) spin-rotational symmetry, which can be captured by including SOC non-perturbatively. The exact classical groundstates, which we obtain for arbitrary SOC, are governed by the SU(2) fluxes associated with SOC threading the constituent triangles. The groundstates break the SO(2) symmetry, and the associated Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature is determined by the SU(2) fluxes through the triangles, which we confirm by finite temperature classical Monte Carlo simulation.

Edge-Mediated Skyrmion Chain and Its Collective Dynamics in a Confined Geometry

The emergence of a topologically nontrivial vortex-like magnetic structure, the magnetic skyrmion, has launched new concepts for memory devices. There, extensive studies have theoretically demonstrated the ability to encode information bits by using a chain of skyrmions in one-dimensional nanostripes. Here, we report the first experimental observation of the skyrmion chain in FeGe nanostripes by using high resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Under an applied field normal to the nanostripes plane, we observe that the helical ground states with distorted edge spins would evolves into individual skyrmions, which assemble in the form of chain at low field and move collectively into the center of nanostripes at elevated field. Such skyrmion chain survives even as the width of nanostripe is much larger than the single skyrmion size. These discovery demonstrates new way of skyrmion formation through the edge effect, and might, in the long term, shed light on the applications.

Electrical Probing of Field-Driven Cascading Quantized Transitions of Skyrmion Cluster States in MnSi Nanowires

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable whirlpool-like spin textures that offer great promise as information carriers for future ultra-dense memory and logic devices1-4. To enable such applications, particular attention has been focused on the skyrmions properties in highly confined geometry such as one dimensional nanowires5-8. Hitherto it is still experimentally unclear what happens when the width of the nanowire is comparable to that of a single skyrmion. Here we report the experimental demonstration of such scheme, where magnetic field-driven skyrmion cluster (SC) states with small numbers of skyrmions were demonstrated to exist on the cross-sections of ultra-narrow single-crystal MnSi nanowires (NWs) with diameters, comparable to the skyrmion lattice constant (18 nm). In contrast to the skyrmion lattice in bulk MnSi samples, the skyrmion clusters lead to anomalous magnetoresistance (MR) behavior measured under magnetic field parallel to the NW long axis, where quantized jumps in MR are observed and directly associated with the change of the skyrmion number in the cluster, which is supported by Monte Carlo simulations. These jumps show the key difference between the clustering and crystalline states of skyrmions, and lay a solid foundation to realize skyrmion-based memory devices that the number of skyrmions can be counted via conventional electrical measurements.

Charged skyrmions on the surface of a topological insulator

We consider the interplay between magnetic skyrmions in an insulating thin film and the Dirac surface states of a 3D topological insulator (TI), coupled by proximity effect. The magnetic texture of skyrmions can lead to confinement of Dirac states at the skyrmion radius, where out of plane magnetization vanishes. This confinement can result in charging of the skyrmion texture. The presence of bound states is robust in an external magnetic field, which is needed to stabilize skyrmions. It is expected that for relevant experimental parameters skyrmions will have a few bound states that can be tuned using an external magnetic field. We argue that these charged skyrmions can be manipulated directly by an electric field, with skyrmion mobility proportional to the number of bound states at the skyrmion radius. Coupling skyrmionic thin films to a TI surface can provide a more direct and efficient way of controlling skyrmion motion in insulating materials. This provides a new dimension in the study of skyrmion manipulation.

Systematic Search and A New Family of Skyrmion Materials

Magnetic skyrmions have recently attracted great attentions. However they are harbored in very limited numbers of magnets up to now. The search of new helimagnetic materials is thus an urgent topic in the field of skyrmion physics. In this letter, we provide a guideline on this issue, and discuss the possibility of realizing skyrmions in a new family of molybdenum nitrides $A_2$Mo$_3$N ($A$=Fe, Co, and Rh). By means of the first-principles calculations, the electronic and magnetic structures are calculated and the existence of strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is demonstrated.

Transport Theory of Metallic B20 Helimagnets

B20 compounds are a class of cubic helimagnets harboring nontrivial spin textures such as spin helices and skyrmions. It has been well understood that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is the origin of these textures, and the physics behind the DM interaction is the spin-orbital coupling (SOC). However the SOC shows its effect not only on the spins, but also on the electrons. In this paper, we will discuss effects of the SOC on the electron and spin transports in B20 compounds. An effective Hamiltonian is presented from symmetry analysis, and the spin-orbital coupling therein shows anomalous behaviors in anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and helical resistance. New effects such as inverse spin-galvanic effect is proposed, and the origin of the DM interaction is discussed.

Weyl fermions induced Magnon electrodynamics in Weyl semimetal

Weyl fermions, which are fermions with definite chiralities, can give rise to anomalous breaking of the symmetry of the physical system which they are a part of. In their (3+1)-dimensional realizations in condensed matter systems, i.e., the so-called Weyl semimetals, this anomaly gives rise to topological electromagnetic response of magnetic fluctuations, which takes the form of non-local interaction between magnetic fluctuations and electromagnetic fields. We study the physical consequences of this non-local interaction, including electric field assisted magnetization dynamics, an extra gapless magnon dispersion, and polariton behaviors that feature "sibling" bands in small magnetic fields.

Magnetoresistance due to Broken C4 Symmetry in Cubic B20 Chiral Magnets

The B20 chiral magnets with broken inversion symmetry and C4 rotation symmetry have attracted much attention. The broken inversion symmetry leads to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya that gives rise to the helical and Skyrmion states. We report the unusual magnetoresistance (MR) of B20 chiral magnet Fe0.85Co0.15Si that directly reveals the broken C4 rotation symmetry. We present a microscopic theory, a minimal theory with two spin-orbit terms, that satisfies all the symmetry requirements and accounts for the transport experiments.

Universal Ratio of Intrinsic Resistivities of Spin Helix in B20 (Fe-Co)Si Magnets

The B20 magnets with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (D-M) interaction exhibit spin helix and Skyrmion spin textures unattainable in traditional Heisenberg ferromagnets. We have determined the intrinsic resistivity of the spin helix, which is a macroscopic Bloch domain wall, in B20 (Fe-Co)Si magnets. We found a universal resistance ratio of gamma = 1.35 with current parallel and perpendicular to the helix, independent of composition and temperature. This gamma value is much smaller than 3, the well-known minimum value for domain wall resistivity in traditional ferromagnets, due to the significant spin-orbit coupling in the B20 magnets.

Dynamics of an Insulating Skyrmion under a Temperature Gradient

We study the Skyrmion dynamics in thin films under a temperature gradient. Our numerical simulations show that both single and multiple Skyrmions in a crystal move towards the high temperature region, which is contrary to particle diffusion. Noticing a similar effect in the domain wall motion, we employ a theory based on magnon dynamics to explain this counterintuitive phenomenon. Unlike the temperature driven domain wall motion, the Skyrmion's topological charge plays an important role, and a transverse Skyrmion motion is observed. Our theory turns out to be in agreement with numerical simulations, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Our calculation indicated that a very promising Skyrmion dynamic phenomenon can be observed in experiments.

Dynamics of Skyrmion Crystals in Metallic Thin Films

We study the collective dynamics of the Skyrmion crystal (SkX) in thin films of ferromagnetic metals resulting from the nontrivial Skyrmion topology. We show that the current-driven motion of the crystal reduces the topological Hall effect and the Skyrmion trajectories bend away from the direction of the electric current (the Skyrmion Hall effect). We find a new dissipation mechanism in non-collinear spin textures that can lead to a much faster spin relaxation than Gilbert damping, calculate the dispersion of phonons in the SkX, and discuss effects of impurity pinning of Skyrmions.

Size Effects on Transport Properties in Topological Anderson Insulators

We study the size effects on the transport properties in topological Anderson insulators by means of the Landauer-Büttiker formalism combined with the nonequilibrium Green function method. Conductances calculated for serval different widths of the nanoribbons reveal that there is no longer quantized plateaus for narrow nanoribbons. The local spin-resolved current distribution demonstrates that the edge states on the two sides can be coupled, leading to enhancement of backscattering as the width of the nanoribbon decreases, thus destroying the perfect quantization phenomena in the topological Anderson insulator. We also show that the main contribution to the nonquantized conductance also comes from edge states. Experiment proposals on topological Anderson insulator are discussed finally.
