Extensibility of Hohenberg-Kohn Theorem to general quantum systems

Hohenberg-Kohn (HK) theorem is a cornerstone of modern electronic structure calculations. For interacting electrons, given that the internal part of the Hamiltonian ($\hat H_{int}$), containing the kinetic energy and Couloumb interaction of electrons, has a fixed form, the theorem states that when the electrons are subject to an external electrostatic field, the ground-state density can inversely determine the field, and thus the full Hamiltonian completely. For a general quantum system, a HK-type Hamiltonian in the form of $\hat H_{hk}\{g_i\}=\hat H_{int}+\sum_i g_i \hat O_i$ can always be defined, by grouping those terms with fixed or preknown coefficients into $\hat H_{int}$, and factorizing the remaining as superposition of a set of Hermitian operators $\{\hat O_i\}$. We ask whether the HK theorem can be extended, so that the ground-state expectation values of $\{\hat O_i\}$ as the generalized density can in principle be used as the fundamental variables determining all the properties of the system. We show that the question can be addressed by introducing the concept of generalized density correlation matrix (GDCM) defined with respect to the $\{\hat O_i\}$ operators. The invertibility of the GDCM represents a mathematically rigorous and practically useful criterion for the extension of HK theorem to be valid. We apply this criterion to several representative systems, including the quantum Ising dimer, the frustration-free systems, N-level quantum systems with fixed inter-level transition amplitude and tunable level energies, and a fermionic Hubbard chain with inhomogeneous on-site interactions. We suggest that for a finite-size system, finding an invertible GDCM under one single $\{g_i\}$ configuration is typically sufficient to establish the generic extensibility of the HK theorem in the entire parameter space.

Testing density functional theory in a quantum Ising chain

By using the quantum Ising chain as a test bed and treating the spin polarization along the external transverse field as the "generalized density", we examine the performance of different levels of density functional approximations parallel to those widely used for interacting electrons, such as local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We show that by adding the lowest-order and nearest-neighbor density variation correction to the simple LDA, a semi-local energy functional in the spirit of GGA is almost exact over a wide range of inhomogeneous density distribution. In addition, the LDA and GGA error structures bear a high level of resemblance to the quantum phase diagram of the system. These results provide insights into the triumph and failure of these approximations in a general context.

Magnetic-field-induced robust zero Hall plateau state in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Chern insulator

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance plateau state. Nonlocal transport measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the charge transport in the zero Hall plateau state is conducted by two counter-propagating edge states that arise from the combined effects of Landau levels and large Zeeman effect in strong magnetic fields. Our result demonstrates the intricate interplay among intrinsic magnetic order, external magnetic field, and nontrivial band topology in MnBi2Te4.

Prediction of intrinsic topological superconductivity in Mn-doped GeTe monolayer from first-principles

Recent discovery of topological superconductors (TSCs) has sparked enormous interest. Realization of TSC requires a delicate tuning of multiple microscopic parameters, which remains a great challenge. Here, we develop a first-principles approach to quantify realistic conditions of TSC by solving self-consistently Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation based on Wannier function construction of band structure, in presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman splitting and electron-phonon coupling. We further demonstrate the power of this new method by predicting the Mn-doped GeTe (Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Te) monolayer - a well-known dilute magnetic semiconductor showing superconductivity under hole doping - to be a Class D TSC with Chern number of -1 and chiral Majorana edge modes. By constructing a first-principles phase diagram in the parameter space of temperature and Mn concentration, we propose the TSC phase can be induced at a lower-limit transition temperature of ~40 mK and the Mn concentration of $x$~0.015%. Our approach can be generally applied to TSCs with a phonon-mediated pairing, providing useful guidance for future experiments.

Type-II Ising superconductivity in two-dimensional materials with strong spin-orbit coupling

Recent discovery of Ising superconductivity protected against in-plane magnetic field by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has stimulated intensive research interests. The effect, however, was only expected to appear in two-dimensional (2D) noncentrosymmetric materials with spin-valley locking. In this work, we proposed a new type of Ising superconductivity in 2D materials with $C_{nz}$ rotational symmetry ($n=3,4,6$). This mechanism, dubbed as type-II Ising superconductivity, is applicable for centrosymmetric materials. Type-II Ising superconductivity relies on the SOC-induced spin-orbital locking characterized by Ising-type Zeeman-like fields displaying opposite signs for opposing orbitals. We found that type-II Ising superconductivity are most prominent around time-reversal invariant momenta and is not sensitive to inversion symmetry breaking. By performing high-throughput first-principles calculations, about one hundred candidate materials were identified. Our work significantly enriches the physics and materials of Ising superconductor, opening new opportunities for fundamental research and practical applications of 2D materials.

An extensive impurity-scattering study on the pairing symmetry of monolayer FeSe films on SrTiO3

Determination of the pairing symmetry in monolayer FeSe films on SrTiO3 is a requisite for understanding the high superconducting transition temperature in this system, which has attracted intense theoretical and experimental studies but remains controversial. Here, by introducing several types of point defects in FeSe monolayer films, we conduct a systematic investigation on the impurity-induced electronic states by spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Ranging from surface adsorption, chemical substitution to intrinsic structural modification, these defects generate a variety of scattering strength, which renders new insights on the pairing symmetry.
