DOTA-ME-CS: Daily Oriented Text Audio-Mandarin English-Code Switching Dataset

Code-switching, the alternation between two or more languages within communication, poses great challenges for Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. Existing models and datasets are limited in their ability to effectively handle these challenges. To address this gap and foster progress in code-switching ASR research, we introduce the DOTA-ME-CS: Daily oriented text audio Mandarin-English code-switching dataset, which consists of 18.54 hours of audio data, including 9,300 recordings from 34 participants. To enhance the dataset's diversity, we apply artificial intelligence (AI) techniques such as AI timbre synthesis, speed variation, and noise addition, thereby increasing the complexity and scalability of the task. The dataset is carefully curated to ensure both diversity and quality, providing a robust resource for researchers addressing the intricacies of bilingual speech recognition with detailed data analysis. We further demonstrate the dataset's potential in future research. The DOTA-ME-CS dataset, along with accompanying code are shared in the Github.

Hybrid Hierarchical Federated Learning over 5G/NextG Wireless Networking

Today's 5G and NextG wireless networks are moving toward using the coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission and reception technique, where a client can be simultaneously served by multiple base stations (BSs) for better communication performance. However, traditional hierarchical federated learning (HFL) architectures impose the constraint that each client can be associated with only one edge server (ES) at a time. If we keep using the traditional HFL architectures in modern hierarchical networks for model training, the benefits of the CoMP technique would remain unexploited and leave room for further improvements in training efficiency. To address this issue, we propose hybrid hierarchical federated learning (HHFL), which allows clients in overlapping regions to simultaneously communicate with multiple edge servers (ESs) for model aggregation. HHFL is able to enhance inter-ES knowledge sharing, thereby mitigating model divergence and improving training efficiency. We provide a rigorous theoretical convergence analysis with a convergence upper bound to validate its effectiveness. Experimental results show that HHFL outperforms traditional HFL, particularly when the data across different ESs is not independent and identically distributed (non-IID). For example, when each ES is dominated by only two of the ten classes and 15 out of the 57 clients can connect to multiple ESs, HHFL achieves up to 2x faster convergence under the same configuration. These results demonstrate that HHFL provides a scalable and efficient solution for FL model training in today's and NextG wireless networks.

Data-Driven Next-Generation Wireless Networking: Embracing AI for Performance and Security

New network architectures, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, and next-generation (NextG) cellular systems, put forward emerging challenges to the design of future wireless networks toward ultra-high data rate, massive data processing, smart designs, low-cost deployment, reliability and security in dynamic environments. As one of the most promising techniques today, artificial intelligence (AI) is advocated to enable a data-driven paradigm for wireless network design. In this paper, we are motivated to review existing AI techniques and their applications for the full wireless network protocol stack toward improving network performance and security. Our goal is to summarize the current motivation, challenges, and methodology of using AI to enhance wireless networking from the physical to the application layer, and shed light on creating new AI-enabled algorithms, mechanisms, protocols, and system designs for future data-driven wireless networking.
