Quantifying the effects of nickel on Earth's inner-core nucleation

The formation of Earth's solid inner core marks a major transition in the thermal and chemical evolution of the deep Earth, yet its origin remains paradoxical, as initial nucleation appears to require unrealistically large undercooling in the outer core. Here, we use atomistic simulations to quantify how Ni affects this process under inner-core conditions. While Fe-Ni alloys preserve strong thermodynamic competition between the hcp and bcc phases, the bcc phase consistently forms smaller critical nuclei and has lower nucleation barriers than hcp. Increasing Ni content in the melts further lowers the nucleation barrier and shortens the nucleation waiting time. Local chemical fluctuations also strongly affect the macroscopic nucleation rate. Combining these effects, bcc nucleation in Fe80Ni20 reaches about 250 K of undercooling, approaching geophysical constraints. We demonstrate that Ni enrichment, bcc nucleation, and chemical heterogeneity substantially narrow the inner-core nucleation paradox.

Percolating Multifractal Domains at a Polymorphic Phase Boundary

Giant piezoelectricity in ferroelectrics is commonly associated with phase-boundary instabilities, among which the polymorphic phase boundary (PPB) is a prominent example conventionally attributed to the coexistence of ferroelectric phases. Here, using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of the lead-free (K,Na)NbO3-(Bi,Na)ZrO3 solid solutions, we show that the PPB hosts a percolating multifractal polar domain which governs the dielectric and piezoelectric responses. By quantifying the global fractal dimension and multifractal spectrum width of this polar network, we identify fractal connectivity and multiscale heterogeneity as microstructural order parameters for the PPB. The maximum reversible piezoelectric response occurs when the fractal-domain volume fraction approaches the three-dimensional percolation threshold, suggesting that near-critical polar connectivity enables giant reversible electromechanical coupling. In this mechanism, the fractal backbone preserves polar memory and provides the restoring force required for reversibility, while the surrounding nonfractal regions supply the polar compliance needed for large polarization rotation and strain. These results establish percolating multifractal polar domains as a microscopic mechanism for PPB-enhanced piezoelectricity and suggest fractal connectivity as a design parameter for high-performance piezoelectrics.

Industrial Data-Service-Knowledge Governance: Toward Integrated and Trusted Intelligence

The convergence of artificial intelligence, cyber-physical systems, and distributed networking has accelerated the evolution of industrial intelligence across edge, cloud, and cross-organizational communication environments. However, existing governance mechanisms remain fragmented across data management, service orchestration, and knowledge-based decision-making, making it difficult to ensure reliability, accountability, compliance, and explainability throughout the industrial intelligence stack. To address this gap, we present TRISK (TRusted Industrial Data-Service-Knowledge governance), a conceptual and taxonomic framework for trustworthy industrial intelligence. TRISK is grounded in a five-dimensional trust model covering quality, security, privacy, fairness, and explainability, and formalizes how trust is constructed, propagated, aggregated, and fed back across data, service, and knowledge layers in networked industrial systems. Through a structured synthesis of more than 100 representative studies, standards, and technical reports, we examine data governance as the foundation of trust construction, service governance as the mediation layer for trustworthy execution, and knowledge governance as the semantic anchor for reasoning, validation, and feedback adaptation. We further discuss industrial implementation patterns, cross-industry implications, and the role of emerging communication and computing technologies. Finally, we outline a future research roadmap toward adaptive, verifiable, and human-aligned industrial governance for Industry 5.0.
