Design and Fabrication of a Spin Coater with In-Situ Optical Measurement for Soft Thin Films

Spin coating is widely used for fabrication of thin polymer and elastomer films, yet reliable thickness verification of highly compliant materials remains challenging due to deformation from contact-based measurements and the cost and complexity of conventional optical metrology. Accurate thickness control is especially critical in soft elastomer applications such as dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), where mechanical and functional performance scales strongly with film thickness. This work presents a low-cost, primarily 3D-printed benchtop spin coater with an integrated, minimally deforming optical thickness measurement system for soft-film fabrication workflows. The system is designed to manufacture films between 50 and 300 microns thick with repeatability within 10 microns. Thickness is measured in-situ by tracking displacement of a reflected laser beam via quadrant photodetector, avoiding significant deformation. Optical geometry, sensor linearity constraints, and structural validation via finite element analysis are discussed. Experimental validation using calibrated metal shims demonstrated a thickness resolution of 3.6-3.7 microns and best-case measurement repeatability of 13 microns (95 percent confidence interval). The platform repeatably produced silicone films within 9 microns of target thickness, demonstrating that accessible optical metrology can be integrated into a low-cost spin coating system for practical, thickness-controlled fabrication of compliant thin films without specialized industrial instrumentation.

Optimal Multi-Modal Transportation and Electric Power Flow: The Value of Coordinated Dynamic Operation

The electrification of transportation represents a critical challenge in the global transition toward net-zero emissions, as the sector often accounts for more than one-quarter of national energy consumption. Achieving this transformation requires not only widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) but also their seamless integration into interdependent infrastructure systems-specifically, the transportation-electricity nexus (TEN). This paper develops an optimal multi-modal transportation and electric power flow (OMTEPF) model to evaluate the benefits of coordinated, dynamic system operation. Building on recent advances in hetero-functional graph theory, the framework enables joint optimization of five key operational decisions in intelligent TEN management: vehicle dispatch, route choice, charging station queuing, coordinated charging, and vehicle-to-grid stabilization. The mesoscopic, dynamic model explicitly represents individual EVs and their state-of-charge trajectories, thereby extending beyond the prevailing literature's focus on static, macroscopic traffic assignment. It further captures the full scope of the TEN as a system-of-systems, incorporating five distinct charging modalities: private residential, private commercial, wired public commercial, inductive public, and discharging. On the power system side, an IV-ACOPF formulation ensures globally optimal solutions to the electrical subproblems. Comparative analysis demonstrates the substantial value of coordinated TEN operation relative to the status quo of siloed, uncoordinated infrastructure management. This work provides both a novel methodological contribution and actionable insights for the co-design and operation of next-generation sustainable mobility-energy systems.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Physical Origins of Double-Peaked Narrow Emission-Line Spaxels in Barred Galaxies

The physical origins of double-peaked narrow emission-line spaxels (DPSs) in barred galaxies are explored through the analysis of a sample of 72 barred double-peaked emission-line galaxies (DPGs) extracted from the MaNGA dataset. In this study, we examine two potential scenarios: the gas inflow along the bar and the formation of a bar-induced gaseous nuclear ring. By applying a classical galactic dynamics model, we calculate the radii and rotational velocities of the nuclear rings for all barred DPGs, and compare them with the observed properties of their DPSs. Our analysis reveals a significant correlation between the predicted radii of the nuclear rings and the maximum centric distances of the DPSs, as well as a marginal correlation between the predicted rotational velocities of the nuclear rings and the observed maximum velocity differences of the DPSs. These findings provide strong evidence to support the hypothesis that the DPSs of a barred DPG in MaNGA primarily originate from the convolution of the PSF effect with its bar-induced fast-rotating gaseous nuclear ring.

Double-peaked Narrow Emission-Line Galaxies in SDSS-IV MaNGA

Narrow emission lines in a galaxy's spectrum that show double peaks indicate the presence of distinct gas components with different velocities, and its physical origin remains uncertain. This study uses galaxies from the final MaNGA data release to detect double-peaked narrow emission-line spaxels (DPSs) by examining the double Gaussian profiles of the H$ α$-[N \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2}] doublets across all MaNGA spaxels. A total of 5,420 DPSs associated with 304 double-peaked narrow emission-line galaxies (DPGs) are identified, each DPG containing a minimum of 5 DPSs and being free from overlap with other galaxies. We find that DPSs can be categorized into three groups according to their central distance $r/R_e$ and the velocity difference $Δv$ between their two components: the inner low-$Δv$, inner high-$Δv$ and outer DPSs. By incorporating the physical characteristics of the DPGs into their DPSs, we demonstrate for the first time the existence of statistical correlations between barred DPGs and inner low-$Δv$ DPSs, AGN-hosting DPGs and inner high-$Δv$ DPSs, as well as tidal DPGs and outer DPSs.
