Quiver BPS Indices from Crystal Profiles

We derive new exact formulae for elliptic genera in two spacetime dimensions with $\mathcal{N}\ge 2$ supercharges, as well as their one- and zero-dimensional counterparts (for Witten indices and matrix-model partition functions). Our results are written as a discrete sum over geometric/combinatorial structures of crystals introduced previously by the authors. The contribution from each crystal may be expressed in terms of the boundary data of a finite substructure of the crystal called the molecules. Our results provide vast generalisations of the celebrated Nekrasov partition function enumerated by the Young diagrams, and uncover new combinatorics underlying the crystal melting. We also analyse the thermodynamic limit of crystals arising from two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories associated with toric Calabi-Yau fourfolds, where a projection of the Calabi-Yau geometry emerges in the limit.

Orbi-Instantons and Class $\mathcal{S}$ Theories of Type D

We investigate the landscape of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ D-type orbi-instanton superconformal field theories (SCFTs) and their torus compactifications to four-dimensional class $\mathcal{S}$ theories. By analysing a general class of 6d F-theory constructions via generalised quivers, we demonstrate that -- in contrast to the well-characterised A-type series -- the dimensional reductions that admit a 4d class $\mathcal{S}$ description on a Riemann sphere with three untwisted D-type punctures constitute only a subset of the full orbi-instanton landscape. For this subclass, we show that the punctures can be effectively characterised by two sets of integers: the $s$-labels and the $m$-labels. The $s$-labels, or ``Kac-type labels'', serve as the D-type analogues to the Kac labels used in A-type theories; we establish their correspondence with ``modified excess numbers'' in the associated 3d mirror theories (magnetic quivers). The $m$-labels are further introduced to streamline the mapping from 6d generalised quivers to their class $\mathcal{S}$ descriptions. Furthermore, we analyse physical distinctions arising from 6d $\theta$ angles and explore the hierarchy of Higgs branch flows. In doing so, we uncover instances of ``hidden Higgsings'' -- renormalization group flows present in the 6d parent theories that are not manifest in the puncture closures of the corresponding class $\mathcal{S}$ descriptions.

An Overview of Crystals and Double Quiver Yangians

In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the crystal melting models and the quiver algebras regarding the BPS counting. We shall consider the constructions of crystals for generic quivers and discuss the so-called double quiver Yangians/algebras. This is an invited review for International Journal of Modern Physics A.

Elliptic Genera of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ Gauge Theories

We derive an exact residue formula for the elliptic genera of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,1)$ gauge theories. We find a new residue prescription which recovers the Jeffery-Kirwan residue prescription for $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories. We apply the formula to the Gukov-Pei-Putrov model and analyze the phase structure of the theory.

Atomic Higgsings of 6D SCFTs

In this paper, we study the full Higgs branch Hasse diagram for any given 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFT constructed via F-theory. This can be done by a procedure of determining all the minimal Higgsings on the generalized quiver of the 6d SCFT. We call this procedure the atomic Higgsing, which can be implemented iteratively. We present our general algorithms with many concrete examples of Hasse diagrams. We also compare our algorithm with the Higgsings determined by the 3d $\mathcal{N} = 4$ magnetic quivers. For the cases where the magnetic quivers are unitary, we can reproduce the full Hasse diagrams. We also construct the orthosymplectic magnetic quivers from the Type IIA brane systems for some new examples. Our approach, based on F-theory, applies to the known and new orthosymplectic cases, as well as theories that do not have known descriptions in terms of magnetic quivers. We expect our geometry-based approach to help extend the horizon of the RG flows of the 6d SCFTs.

Atomic Higgsings of 6D SCFTs II: Induced Flows

We study a specific type of atomic Higgsings of the 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories, which we call the induced flows. For the conformal matter theory associated with a pair of nilpotent orbits, the induced flows are given by the inductions of the orbits. We also consider the induced flows for the orbi-instanton theories (as well as some little string theories) that are associated with the homomorphisms from the discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ to $E_8$. This gives a physical definition of the inductions among these discrete homomorphisms, analogous to the inductions of the nilpotent orbits. We analyze the Higgs branch dimensions, the monotonicity of the Weyl anomalies (or the 2-group structure constants for LSTs) and the brane pictures under the induced flows.

The Origin of Calabi-Yau Crystals in BPS States Counting

We study the counting problem of BPS D-branes wrapping holomorphic cycles of a general toric Calabi-Yau manifold. We evaluate the Jeffrey-Kirwan residues for the flavoured Witten index for the supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics on the worldvolume of the D-branes, and find that BPS degeneracies are described by a statistical mechanical model of crystal melting. For Calabi-Yau threefolds, we reproduce the crystal melting models long known in the literature. For Calabi-Yau fourfolds, however, we find that the crystal does not contain the full information for the BPS degeneracy and we need to explicitly evaluate non-trivial weights assigned to the crystal configurations. Our discussions treat Calabi-Yau threefolds and fourfolds on equal footing, and include discussions on elliptic and rational generalizations of the BPS states counting, connections to the mathematical definition of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants, examples of wall crossings, and of trialities in quiver gauge theories.

Crystals and Double Quiver Algebras from Jeffrey-Kirwan Residues

We construct statistical mechanical models of crystal melting describing the flavoured Witten indices of $\mathcal{N}\ge 2$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. Our results can be derived from the Jeffrey-Kirwan (JK) residue formulas, and generalize the previous results for quivers corresponding to toric Calabi-Yau threefolds and fourfolds to a large class of quivers satisfying the no-overlap condition, including those corresponding to some non-toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. We construct new quiver algebras which we call the double quiver Yangians/algebras, as well as their representations in terms of the aforementioned crystals. For theories with four supercharges, we compare the double quiver algebras with the existing quiver Yangians/BPS algebras, which we show can also be constructed from the JK residues. For theories with two supercharges, the double quiver algebras provide an algebraic description of the BPS states, including the information of the fixed points and their relative coefficients in the full partition functions.

Reflexions on Mahler: Dessins, Modularity and Gauge Theories

We provide a unified framework of Mahler measure, dessins d'enfants, and gauge theory. With certain physically motivated Newton polynomials from reflexive polygons, the Mahler measure and the dessin are in one-to-one correspondence. From the Mahler measure, one can construct a Hauptmodul for a congruence subgroup of the modular group, which contains the subgroup associated to the dessin. We also discuss their connections to the quantum periods of del Pezzo surfaces, as well as certain elliptic pencils. In brane tilings and quiver gauge theories, the modular Mahler flow might shed light on the inequivalence amongst the three different complex structures $τ_{R,G,B}$. We also study how, in F-theory, 7-branes and their monodromies arise in the context of dessins.

Futaki Invariants and Reflexive Polygons

Futaki invariants of the classical moduli space of 4d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories determine whether they have a conformal fixed point in the IR. We systematically compute the Futaki invariants for a large family of 4d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coming from D3-branes probing Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities whose bases are Gorenstein Fano surfaces. In particular, we focus on the toric case where the Fano surfaces are given by the 16 reflexive convex polygons and the moduli spaces are given by the corresponding toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We study the distribution of and conjecture new bounds on the Futaki invariants with respect to various topological and geometric quantities. These include the minimum volume of the Sasaki-Einstein base manifolds as well as the Chern and Euler numbers of the toric Fano surfaces. Even though the moduli spaces for the family of theories studied are known to be K-stable, our work sheds new light on how the topological and geometric quantities restrict the Futaki invariants for a plethora of moduli spaces.

More on Affine Dynkin Quiver Yangians

We consider the quiver Yangians associated to general affine Dynkin diagrams. Although the quivers are generically not toric, the algebras have some similar structures. The odd reflections of the affine Dynkin diagrams should correspond to Seiberg duality of the quivers, and we investigate the relations of the dual quiver Yangians. We also mention the construction of the twisted quiver Yangians. It is conjectured that the truncations of the (twisted) quiver Yangians can give rise to certain $\mathcal{W}$-algebras. Incidentally, we give the screening currents of the $\mathcal{W}$-algebras in terms of the free field realization in the case of generalized conifolds. Moreover, we discuss the toroidal and elliptic algebras for any general quivers.

A Survey of Toric Quivers and BPS Algebras

In this note, we discuss some properties of the quiver BPS algebras. We consider how they would transform under different operations on the toric quivers, such as dualities and higgsing. We also give free field realizations of the algebras, in particular for the chiral quivers.

Quiver Yangians and $\mathcal{W}$-Algebras for Generalized Conifolds

We focus on quiver Yangians for most generalized conifolds. We construct a coproduct of the quiver Yangian following the similar approach by Guay-Nakajima-Wendlandt. We also prove that the quiver Yangians related by Seiberg duality are indeed isomorphic. Then we discuss their connections to $\mathcal{W}$-algebras analogous to the study by Ueda. In particular, the universal enveloping algebras of the $\mathcal{W}$-algebras are truncations of the quiver Yangians, and therefore they naturally have truncated crystals as their representations.

Neurons on Amoebae

We apply methods of machine-learning, such as neural networks, manifold learning and image processing, in order to study 2-dimensional amoebae in algebraic geometry and string theory. With the help of embedding manifold projection, we recover complicated conditions obtained from so-called lopsidedness. For certain cases it could even reach $\sim99\%$ accuracy, in particular for the lopsided amoeba of $F_0$ with positive coefficients which we place primary focus. Using weights and biases, we also find good approximations to determine the genus for an amoeba at lower computational cost. In general, the models could easily predict the genus with over $90\%$ accuracies. With similar techniques, we also investigate the membership problem, and image processing of the amoebae directly.

A Note on Quiver Yangians and $\mathcal{R}$-Matrices

In this note, we study possible $\mathcal{R}$-matrix constructions in the context of quiver Yangians and Yang-Baxter algebras. For generalized conifolds, we also discuss the relations between the quiver Yangians and some other Yangian algebras (and $\mathcal{W}$-algebras) in literature.

Crystal Melting, BPS Quivers and Plethystics

We study the refined and unrefined crystal/BPS partition functions of D6-D2-D0 brane bound states for all toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without compact 4-cycles and some non-toric examples. They can be written as products of (generalized) MacMahon functions. We check our expressions and use them as vacuum characters to study the gluings. We then consider the wall crossings and discuss possible crystal descriptions for different chambers. We also express the partition functions in terms of plethystic exponentials. For $\mathbb{C}^3$ and tripled affine quivers, we find their connections to nilpotent Kac polynomials. Similarly, the partition functions of D4-D2-D0 brane bound states can be obtained by replacing the (generalized) MacMahon functions with the inverse of (generalized) Euler functions.

Machine Learning Algebraic Geometry for Physics

We review some recent applications of machine learning to algebraic geometry and physics. Since problems in algebraic geometry can typically be reformulated as mappings between tensors, this makes them particularly amenable to supervised learning. Additionally, unsupervised methods can provide insight into the structure of such geometrical data. At the heart of this programme is the question of how geometry can be machine learned, and indeed how AI helps one to do mathematics. This is a chapter contribution to the book Machine learning and Algebraic Geometry, edited by A. Kasprzyk et al.

Hilbert Series, Machine Learning, and Applications to Physics

We describe how simple machine learning methods successfully predict geometric properties from Hilbert series (HS). Regressors predict embedding weights in projective space to ${\sim}1$ mean absolute error, whilst classifiers predict dimension and Gorenstein index to $>90\%$ accuracy with ${\sim}0.5\%$ standard error. Binary random forest classifiers managed to distinguish whether the underlying HS describes a complete intersection with high accuracies exceeding $95\%$. Neural networks (NNs) exhibited success identifying HS from a Gorenstein ring to the same order of accuracy, whilst generation of 'fake' HS proved trivial for NNs to distinguish from those associated to the three-dimensional Fano varieties considered.
