Emergence of the spin polarized domains in the kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite (Zn$_{0.95}$Cu$_{0.05}$)Cu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$FBr

Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are known to be highly sensitive to perturbations caused by structural disorder. NMR is a local probe ideally suited for investigating such disorder-induced effects, but in practice large distributions in the conventional one-dimensional NMR data make it difficult to distinguish the intrinsic behavior expected for pristine kagome quantum spin liquids from disorder induced effects. Here we report the development of a two-dimensional NMR data acquisition scheme applied to Zn-barlowite (Zn$_{0.95}$Cu$_{0.05}$)Cu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$FBr kagome lattice, and successfully correlate the distribution of the low energy spin excitations with that of the local spin susceptibility. We present evidence for the gradual growth of domains with a local spin polarization induced by 5\% Cu$^{2+}$ defect spins occupying the interlayer non-magnetic Zn$^{2+}$ sites. These spin polarized domains account for $\sim60$\% of the sample volume at 2~K, where gapless excitations induced by interlayer defects dominate the low energy sector of spin excitations within the kagome planes.

GLSD: The Global Large-Scale Ship Database and Baseline Evaluations

In this paper, we introduce a challenging global large-scale ship database (called GLSD), designed specifically for ship detection tasks. The designed GLSD database includes a total of 212,357 annotated instances from 152,576 images. Based on the collected images, we propose 13 ship categories that widely exist in international routes. These categories include Sailing boat, Fishing boat, Passenger ship, Warship, General cargo ship, Container ship, Bulk cargo carrier, Barge, Ore carrier, Speed boat, Canoe, Oil carrier, and Tug. The motivations of developing GLSD include the following: 1) providing a refine and extensive ship detection database that benefits the object detection community, 2) establishing a database with exhaustive labels (bounding boxes and ship class categories) in a uniform classification scheme, and 3) providing a large-scale ship database with geographic information (covering more than 3000 ports and 33 routes) that benefits multi-modal analysis. In addition, we discuss the evaluation protocols corresponding to image characteristics in GLSD and analyze the performance of selected state-of-the-art object detection algorithms on GSLD, aiming to establish baselines for future studies. More information regarding the designed GLSD can be found at https://github.com/jiaming-wang/GLSD.

Emergence of spin singlets with inhomogeneous gaps in the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnets Zn-barlowite and herbertsmithite

The kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet formed by frustrated spins arranged in a lattice of corner-sharing triangles is a prime candidate for hosting a quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state consisting of entangled spin singlets. But the existence of various competing states makes a convincing theoretical prediction of the QSL ground state difficult, calling for experimental clues from model materials. The kagome lattice materials Zn-barlowite ZnCu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$FBr and herbertsmithite ZnCu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$Cl$_2$ do not exhibit long range order, and they are considered the best realizations of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet known to date. Here we use $^{63}$Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance combined with the inverse Laplace transform (ILT) to probe locally the inhomogeneity of delicate quantum ground states affected by disorder. We present direct evidence for the gradual emergence of spin singlets with spatially varying excitation gaps, but even at temperatures far below the super-exchange energy scale their fraction is limited to approximately 60\% of the total spins. Theoretical models need to incorporate the role of disorder to account for the observed inhomogeneously gapped behaviour.

Freezing of the Lattice in the Kagome Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite ZnCu$_3$(OD)$_6$FBr

We use $^{79}$Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) to demonstrate that ultra slow lattice dynamics set in below the temperature scale set by the Cu-Cu super-exchange interaction $J$~($\simeq160$~K) in the kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite. The lattice completely freezes below 50~K, and $^{79}$Br NQR lineshapes become twice broader due to increased lattice distortions. Moreover, the frozen lattice exhibits an oscillatory component in the transverse spin echo decay, a typical signature of pairing of nuclear spins by indirect nuclear spin-spin interaction. This indicates that some Br sites form structural dimers via a pair of kagome Cu sites prior to the gradual emergence of spin singlets below $\sim30$~K. Our findings underscore the significant roles played by subtle structural distortions in determining the nature of the disordered magnetic ground state of the kagome lattice.

Spin excitations of a proximate Kitaev quantum spin liquid realized in Cu$_2$IrO$_3$

Magnetic moments arranged at the corners of a honeycomb lattice are predicted to form a novel state of matter, Kitaev quantum spin liquid, under the influence of frustration effects between bond-dependent Ising interactions. Some layered honeycomb iridates and related materials, such as Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ and $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, are proximate to Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but bosonic spin-wave excitations associated with undesirable antiferromagnetic long-range order mask the inherent properties of Kitaev Hamiltonian. Here, we use $^{63}$Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance to uncover the low energy spin excitations in the nearly ideal honeycomb lattice of effective spin $S = 1/2$ at the Ir$^{4+}$ sites in Cu$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. We demonstrate that, unlike Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, Ir spin fluctuations exhibit no evidence for critical slowing down toward magnetic long range order in zero external magnetic field. Moreover, the low energy spin excitation spectrum is dominated by a mode that has a large excitation gap comparable to the Ising interactions, a signature expected for Majorana fermions of Kitaev quantum spin liquid.

Chandra grating spectroscopy of embedded wind shock X-ray emission from O stars shows low plasma temperatures and significant wind absorption

We present a uniform analysis of six examples of embedded wind shock (EWS) O star X-ray sources observed at high resolution with the Chandra grating spectrometers. By modeling both the hot plasma emission and the continuum absorption of the soft X-rays by the cool, partially ionized bulk of the wind we derive the temperature distribution of the shock-heated plasma and the wind mass-loss rate of each star. We find a similar temperature distribution for each star's hot wind plasma, consistent with a power-law differential emission measure, $\frac{d\log EM}{d\log T}$, with a slope a little steeper than -2, up to temperatures of only about $10^7$ K. The wind mass-loss rates, which are derived from the broadband X-ray absorption signatures in the spectra, are consistent with those found from other diagnostics. The most notable conclusion of this study is that wind absorption is a very important effect, especially at longer wavelengths. More than 90 per cent of the X-rays between 18 and 25 Angstrom units produced by shocks in the wind of $ζ$ Puppis are absorbed, for example. It appears that the empirical trend of X-ray hardness with spectral subtype among O stars is primarily an absorption effect.

TANet: A new Paradigm for Global Face Super-resolution via Transformer-CNN Aggregation Network

Recently, face super-resolution (FSR) methods either feed whole face image into convolutional neural networks (CNNs) or utilize extra facial priors (e.g., facial parsing maps, facial landmarks) to focus on facial structure, thereby maintaining the consistency of the facial structure while restoring facial details. However, the limited receptive fields of CNNs and inaccurate facial priors will reduce the naturalness and fidelity of the reconstructed face. In this paper, we propose a novel paradigm based on the self-attention mechanism (i.e., the core of Transformer) to fully explore the representation capacity of the facial structure feature. Specifically, we design a Transformer-CNN aggregation network (TANet) consisting of two paths, in which one path uses CNNs responsible for restoring fine-grained facial details while the other utilizes a resource-friendly Transformer to capture global information by exploiting the long-distance visual relation modeling. By aggregating the features from the above two paths, the consistency of global facial structure and fidelity of local facial detail restoration are strengthened simultaneously. Experimental results of face reconstruction and recognition verify that the proposed method can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art methods.

NMR Investigation on Honeycomb Iridate Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of a Kitaev spin liquid candidate material Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ based on $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance line shape, Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. The first sample A shows signatures of magnetically ordered spins, and exhibits one sharp $^7$Li peak with FWHM increasing significantly below 14~K. $1/T_1^{stretch}$ of this sample displays a broad local maximum at 40~K, followed by a very sharp peak at $T_N = 9\pm1$~K due to critical slowing down of Ir spin fluctuations, a typical signature of magnetic long range order. In order to shed light on the position-by-position variation of $1/T_1$ throughout the sample, we use Inverse Laplace Transform $T_1$ analysis based on Tikhonov regularization to deduce the density distribution function $P(1/T_1)$. We demonstrate that $\sim 60\%$ of Ir spins are statically ordered at the NMR measurement timescale but the rest of the sample volume remains paramagnetic even at 4.2~K, presumably because of structural disorder induced primarily by stacking faults. In order to further investigate the influence of structural disorder, we compare these NMR results with those of a second sample B, which has been shown by transmission electron microscope to have domains with unwanted Ag inclusion at Li and Ir sites within the Ir honeycomb planes. The sample B displays an additional NMR peak with relative intensity of $\sim 17\%$. The small Knight shift and $1/T_1$ of these defect-induced $^7$Li sites and the enhancement of bulk susceptibility at low temperatures suggest that these defects generate domains of only weakly magnetic Ir spins accompanied by free spins, leading to a lack of clear signatures of long-range order. The apparent lack of long-range order could be easily misinterpreted as evidence for the realization of a spin liquid ground state in highly disordered Kitaev lattice.

Pan-sharpening via High-pass Modification Convolutional Neural Network

Most existing deep learning-based pan-sharpening methods have several widely recognized issues, such as spectral distortion and insufficient spatial texture enhancement, we propose a novel pan-sharpening convolutional neural network based on a high-pass modification block. Different from existing methods, the proposed block is designed to learn the high-pass information, leading to enhance spatial information in each band of the multi-spectral-resolution images. To facilitate the generation of visually appealing pan-sharpened images, we propose a perceptual loss function and further optimize the model based on high-level features in the near-infrared space. Experiments demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art pan-sharpening methods, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The proposed model is open-sourced at https://github.com/jiaming-wang/HMB.

Unsupervised Remote Sensing Super-Resolution via Migration Image Prior

Recently, satellites with high temporal resolution have fostered wide attention in various practical applications. Due to limitations of bandwidth and hardware cost, however, the spatial resolution of such satellites is considerably low, largely limiting their potentials in scenarios that require spatially explicit information. To improve image resolution, numerous approaches based on training low-high resolution pairs have been proposed to address the super-resolution (SR) task. Despite their success, however, low/high spatial resolution pairs are usually difficult to obtain in satellites with a high temporal resolution, making such approaches in SR impractical to use. In this paper, we proposed a new unsupervised learning framework, called "MIP", which achieves SR tasks without low/high resolution image pairs. First, random noise maps are fed into a designed generative adversarial network (GAN) for reconstruction. Then, the proposed method converts the reference image to latent space as the migration image prior. Finally, we update the input noise via an implicit method, and further transfer the texture and structured information from the reference image. Extensive experimental results on the Draper dataset show that MIP achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. The proposed MIP is open-sourced at http://github.com/jiaming-wang/MIP.

SSCAN: A Spatial-spectral Cross Attention Network for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

Hyperspectral images (HSIs) have been widely used in a variety of applications thanks to the rich spectral information they are able to provide. Among all HSI processing tasks, HSI denoising is a crucial step. Recently, deep learning-based image denoising methods have made great progress and achieved great performance. However, existing methods tend to ignore the correlations between adjacent spectral bands, leading to problems such as spectral distortion and blurred edges in denoised results. In this study, we propose a novel HSI denoising network, termed SSCAN, that combines group convolutions and attention modules. Specifically, we use a group convolution with a spatial attention module to facilitate feature extraction by directing models' attention to band-wise important features. We propose a spectral-spatial attention block (SSAB) to exploit the spatial and spectral information in hyperspectral images in an effective manner. In addition, we adopt residual learning operations with skip connections to ensure training stability. The experimental results indicate that the proposed SSCAN outperforms several state-of-the-art HSI denoising algorithms.

Schrödinger-cat states in Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry: a multiple Davydov Ansatz approach

Employing the time-dependent variational principle combined with the multiple Davydov $\mathrm{D}_2$ Ansatz, we investigate Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions in a qubit coupled to a photon mode with various initial photon states at zero temperature. Thanks to the multiple Davydov trial states, exact photonic dynamics taking place in the course of the LZ transition is also studied efficiently. With the qubit driven by a linear external field and the photon mode initialized with Schrödinger-cat states, asymptotic behavior of the transition probability beyond the rotating-wave approximation is uncovered for a variety of initial states. Using a sinusoidal external driving field, we also explore the photon-assisted dynamics of Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana interferometry. Transition pathways involving multiple energy levels are unveiled by analyzing the photon dynamics.

Chandra spectral measurements of the O supergiant $ζ$ Puppis indicate a surprising increase in the wind mass-loss rate over 18 years

New long Chandra grating observations of the O supergiant $ζ$ Pup show not only a brightening of the x-ray emission line flux of 13 per cent in the 18 years since Chandra's first observing cycle, but also clear evidence - at more than four sigma significance - of increased wind absorption signatures in its Doppler-broadened x-ray emission line profiles. We demonstrate this with non-parametric analysis of the profiles as well as Gaussian fitting and then use the line-profile model fitting to derive a mass-loss rate of $2.47 \pm 0.09 \times 10^{-6}$ Msun/yr, which is a 40 per cent increase over the value obtained from the cycle 1 data. The increase in the individual emission line fluxes is greater for short-wavelength lines than long-wavelength lines, as would be expected if a uniform increase in line emission is accompanied by an increase in the wavelength-dependent absorption by the cold wind in which the shock-heated plasma is embedded.

Stroke Constrained Attention Network for Online Handwritten Mathematical Expression Recognition

In this paper, we propose a novel stroke constrained attention network (SCAN) which treats stroke as the basic unit for encoder-decoder based online handwritten mathematical expression recognition (HMER). Unlike previous methods which use trace points or image pixels as basic units, SCAN makes full use of stroke-level information for better alignment and representation. The proposed SCAN can be adopted in both single-modal (online or offline) and multi-modal HMER. For single-modal HMER, SCAN first employs a CNN-GRU encoder to extract point-level features from input traces in online mode and employs a CNN encoder to extract pixel-level features from input images in offline mode, then use stroke constrained information to convert them into online and offline stroke-level features. Using stroke-level features can explicitly group points or pixels belonging to the same stroke, therefore reduces the difficulty of symbol segmentation and recognition via the decoder with attention mechanism. For multi-modal HMER, other than fusing multi-modal information in decoder, SCAN can also fuse multi-modal information in encoder by utilizing the stroke based alignments between online and offline modalities. The encoder fusion is a better way for combining multi-modal information as it implements the information interaction one step before the decoder fusion so that the advantages of multiple modalities can be exploited earlier and more adequately when training the encoder-decoder model. Evaluated on a benchmark published by CROHME competition, the proposed SCAN achieves the state-of-the-art performance.
