Understanding quantum behaviors of an electron in a uniform magnetic field alternatively

Quantum mechanically, an electron moving in a uniform magnetic field forms Landau levels. A curious feature is that for states with a negative angular quantum number, the total probability current vanishes, which appears to contradict the classical picture of cyclotron motion. While a geometric interpretation based on classical orbits exists, alternative interpretations remain of interest. In this paper, we examine the probability current density and identify a critical radius that naturally partitions the plane into an inner clockwise-flow region and an outer counterclockwise-flow region. We show that the vanishing total current results from an exact cancellation between these two regions. Furthermore, by defining a partitioned kinetic angular momentum with respect to the critical radius, we reveal an intrinsic competitive structure: the electron simultaneously carries two opposing rotational components. The negative quantum number manifests in the strength of the inner counter-rotation, while the net kinetic angular momentum remains positive. This bidirectional flow picture also provides a dynamical interpretation of the infinite degeneracy of Landau levels.

Chern-Simons quantum mechanics and fractional angular momentum in atom system

The model of a planar atom which possesses a non-vanishing electric dipole moment interacting with magnetic fields in a specific setting is studied. Energy spectra of this model and its reduced model, which is the limit of cooling down the atom to the negligible kinetic energy, are solved exactly. We show that %similar with the Chern-Simons quantum mechanics, energy spectra of the reduced model can not be obtained directly from the full ones by taking the same limit. In order to match them, we must regularize energy spectra of the full model when the limit of the negligible kinetic energy is taken. It is one of the characteristics of the Chern-Simons quantum mechanics. Besides it, the canonical angular momentum of the reduced model will take fractional values although the full model can only take integers. It means that it is possible to realize the Chern-Simons quantum mechanics and fractional angular momentum simultaneously by this model.

Simulate anyons by cold atoms with induced electric dipole momentum

We show that it is possible to simulate an anyon by a trapped atom which possesses an induced electric dipole moment in the background of electromagnetic fields with a specific configuration. The electromagnetic fields we applied contain a magnetic and two electric fields. We find that when the atom is cooled down to the limit of the negligibly small kinetic energy, the atom behaves like an anyon because its angular momentum takes fractional values. The fractional part of the angular momentum is determined by both the magnetic and one of the electric fields. Roles two electromagnetic fields played are analyzed.

An Immunology-Inspired Network Security Architecture

The coming 5G networks have been enabling the creation of a wide variety of new services and applications which demand a new network security architecture. Immunology is the study of the immune system in vertebrates (including humans) which protects us from infection through various lines of defence. By studying the resemblance between the immune system and network security system, we acquire some inspirations from immunology and distill some guidelines for the design of network security architecture. We present a philosophical design principle, that is maintaining the balance between security and availability. Then, we derive two methodological principles: 1) achieving situation-awareness and fast response through community cooperation among heterogeneous nodes, and 2) Enhancing defense capability through consistently contesting with invaders in a real environment and actively mutating/evolving attack strategies. We also present a reference architecture designed based on the principles.

Realization of cyons and anyons by atoms

We propose theoretical schemes to realize the cyon and anyon by atoms which possess non-vanishing electric dipole moments. To realize a cyon, besides the atom, we need a magnetic field produced by a long magnetic-charged filament. To realize an anyon, however, apart from these we need a harmonic potential and an additional magnetic field produced by a uniformly distributed magnetic charges. We find that the atom will be an anyon when cooled down to the negligibly small kinetic energy limit. The relationship between our results and the previous ones is investigated from the electromagnetic duality.

The fractional angular momentum realized by a cold neutral atom

Inspired by the electromagnetic duality, we propose an approach to realize the fractional angular momentum by using a cold atom which possesses a permanent magnetic dipole momentum. This atom interacts with two electric fields and is trapped by a harmonic potential which enable the motion of the atom to be planar and rotationally symmetric. We show that eigenvalues of the canonical angular momentum of the cold atom can take fractional values when the atom is cooled down to its lowest kinetic energy level. The fractional part of canonical angular momentum is dual to that of the fractional angular momenta realized by using a charged particle. Another approach of getting the fractional angular momentum is also presented. The differences between these two approaches are investigated.

Semi-exact solutions of the Razavy potential

In this work we study the quantum system with the symmetric Razavy potential and show how to find its exact solutions. We find that the solutions are given by the confluent Heun functions. The eigenvalues have to be calculated numerically. The properties of the wave functions depending on $m$ are illustrated graphically for a given potential parameter $ξ$. We find that the even and odd wave functions with definite parity are changed to odd and even wave functions when the potential parameter $m$ increases. This arises from the fact that the parity, which is a defined symmetry for very small $m$, is completely violated for large $m$. We also notice that the energy levels $ε_{i}$ decrease with the increasing potential parameter $m$.

Quantum speed limit for a relativistic electron in the noncommutative phase space

The influence of the noncommutativity on the average speed of a relativistic electron interacting with a uniform magnetic field within the minimum evolution time is investigated. We find that it is possible for the wave packet of the electron to travel faster than the speed of light in vacuum because of the noncommutativity. It suggests that due to the noncommutativity, Lorentz invariance is violated in the relativistic quantum mechanics region.

Superconformal Algebras in Light-cone Gauge Quantization of String Theories on $AdS_3

Motivated by superstring theories on $AdS_3$, we construct spacetime superconformal algebras (SCAs) living on the $AdS_3$ boundary in terms of the transversal physical degrees of freedom. The SCAs constructed are N=4 large, middle algebras, and N=3 algebra, corresponding to superstring theories on $AdS_3 \times S ^3 \times S^3 \times S ^1$, $AdS_3 \times S ^3 \times T ^4 $ and $AdS_3 \times (S^3\times S^3\times S^1)/Z_2$ backgrounds respectively.
