Doppler-free Rydberg Spectroscopy in Warm Vapor

The common approach for producing Rydberg atoms in warm vapor cells is with lasers arranged in a counter-propagating, collinear configuration. Doppler effects in these configurations reduce the efficiency of excitation to the Rydberg state while also producing broadened spectral features. In this work, we demonstrate a three-laser Doppler-free excitation using laser beams whose k-vectors sum to zero, resulting in an enhancement in the Rydberg density and narrowed spectral features. A three-times enhancement to Rydberg density along with a near four-times reduction in spectroscopic line-widths are observed compared to a collinear configuration. This Doppler-free configuration could prove beneficial to Rydberg atomic technologies, such as electric field sensing with small volumes or deterministic photon sources.

Two-tone Doppler cooling of radial two-dimensional crystals in a radiofrequency ion trap

We study the Doppler-cooling of radial two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb crystals of trapped barium ions in a radiofrequency trap. Ions in radial 2D crystals experience micromotion of an amplitude that increases linearly with the distance from the trap center, leading to a position-dependent frequency modulation of laser light in each ion's rest frame. We use two tones of Doppler-cooling laser light separated by approximately 100~MHz to efficiently cool distinct regions in the crystals with differing amplitudes of micromotion. This technique allows us to trap and cool more than 50 ions populating 4 shells in a radial two-dimensional crystal, where with a single tone of Doppler cooling light we are limited to 30 ions in 3 shells. We also individually characterize the micromotion of all ions within the crystals, and use this information to locate the center of the trap and to determine the Matthieu parameters $q_{x}$ and $q_{y}$.

Threshold Resummation Effects in Direct Top Quark Production at Hadron Colliders

We investigate the threshold-enhanced QCD corrections to the cross sections for direct top quark productions induced by model-independent flavor changing neutral current couplings at hadron colliders. We use the soft-collinear effective theory to describe the incoming massless partons and use the heavy quark effective theory to treat the top quark. Then we construct the flavor changing operator based on the above effective theories, and resum the large logarithms near threshold arising from soft gluon emission. Our results show that the resummed QCD corrections further enhance the next-to-leading order cross sections significantly. Moreover, the resummation effects vastly reduce the dependence of the cross sections on the renormalization and factorization scales, especially in cases where the next-to-leading order results behave worse than the leading order results. Our results are more sensitive to the new physics effects. If signals of direct top quark production are found in future experiments, it is more appropriate to use our results as the theoretical inputs for extracting the anomalous couplings.

Transverse momentum resummation in soft-collinear effective theory

We present a universal formalism for transverse momentum resummation in the view of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and establish the relation between our SCET formula and the well known Collins-Soper-Sterman's pQCD formula at the next-to-leading logarithmic order (NLLO). We also briefly discuss the reformulation of joint resummation in SCET.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to the Direct Top Quark Production via Model-independent FCNC Couplings at Hadron Colliders

We calculated the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the cross sections for direct top quark productions induced by model--independent flavour changing neutral current couplings at hadron colliders. The NLO results increase the experimental sensitivity to the anomalous couplings. Our results show that the NLO QCD corrections enhance the leading order (LO) total cross sections at the Tevatron Run 2 about 60% for both of $κ_{tc}^g$ and $κ_{tu}^g$ couplings, and enhance the LO total cross sections at the LHC about 40% for $κ_{tc}^g$ couplings and 50% for $κ_{tu}^g$ couplings, respectively. Moreover, the NLO QCD corrections vastly reduce the dependence of the total cross sections on the renormalization or factorization scale, which leads to increased confidence in predictions based on these results.

Soft Gluon Resummation Effects in Single Slepton Production at Hadron Colliders

We investigate QCD effects in the production of a single slepton at hadron colliders in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model without R-parity. We calculate the total cross sections and the transverse momentum distributions at next-to-leading order in QCD. The NLO corrections enhance the total cross sections and decrease the dependence of the total cross sections on the factorization and renormalization scales. For the differential cross sections, we resum all order soft gluon effects to give reliable predictions for the transverse momentum distributions. We also compare two approaches to the non-perturbative parametrization and found that the results are slightly different at the Tevatron and are in good agreement at the LHC. Our results can be useful to the simulation of the events and to the future collider experiments.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for $A^0Z^0$ associated production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We present the calculations of the complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections (including supersymmetric QCD) to the inclusive total cross sections of the associated production processes $pp\to A^0Z^0+X$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Both the dimensional regularization scheme and the dimensional reduction scheme are used to organize the calculations which yield the same NLO rates. The NLO correction can either enhance or reduce the total cross sections, but it generally efficiently reduces the dependence of the total cross sections on the renormalization/factorization scale. We also examine the uncertainty of the total cross sections due to the parton distribution function uncertainties.

Factorization and Resummation in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

We review soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and apply it to discuss quark electromagnetic form factor, then present the resumed transverse momentum distribution of Higgs-boson production via gluon fusion under this framework, where we derive a relatively full differential formula in transverse momentum $Q_T$ space like one which have been obtained by Dokshitzer-D'Yanov-Troyan (DDT) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Furthermore, our above result can be generalized to even higher order. Comparing our formula with the integral formula of Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) in impact parameter $b$ space, we establish the relationship between the anomalous dimension of operator together with matching coefficients in SCET and the well-known coefficients A, B and C in pQCD, which also provides a relative natural and convenient method to treat the similar questions as ones of CSS, such as the matching in nonperturbative region. Finally, the joint resummation method in SCET is briefly discussed.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for pair production of neutral Higgs bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

We present the calculations of the complete NLO inclusive total cross sections for pair production of neutral Higgs bosons through $b\bar b$ annihilation in the minimal supersymmetric standard model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In our calculations, we used both the DREG scheme and the DRED scheme and found that the NLO total cross sections in the above two schemes are the same. Our results show that the $b\bar b$-annihilation contributions can exceed ones of $gg$ fusion and $q\bar q$ annihilation for $h^0H^0$, $A^0h^0$ and $A^0H^0$ productions when $\tanβ$ is large. In the case of $μ>0$, the NLO corrections enhance the LO total cross sections significantly, which can reach a few tens percent, while for $μ<0$, the corrections are relatively small, and are negative in most parameter space. Moreover, the NLO QCD corrections can reduce the dependence of the total cross sections on the renormalization/factorization scale, especially for $μ<0$. We also use the CTEQ6.1 PDF sets to estimate the uncertainty of LO and NLO total cross sections, and find that the uncertainty arising from the choice of PDFs increases with the increasing $m_{A^0}$.

Effects of R-parity violation in unpolarized top quark decay into polarized W-boson

We calculate one-loop R-parity violating corrections to the top quark decay into a bottom quark and a polarized W-gauge boson. The corrections are presented according to the total corrections, the longitudinal corrections and the transverse corrections, respectively. We compared our results with the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ QCD corrections, the ${\cal O}(α)$ electroweak (EW) and finite width corrections, and also the supersymmetric (SUSY) corrections with R-parity conservation, respectively.

Single top quark production via SUSY-QCD FCNC couplings at the CERN LHC in the unconstrained MSSM

We evaluate the $t\bar{c}$ and $t\bar{u}$ productions at the LHC within the general unconstrained MSSM framework. We find that these single top quark productions induced by SUSY-QCD FCNC couplings have remarkable cross sections for favorable parameter values allowed by current low energy data, which can be as large as a few pb. Once large rates of the $t\bar{c}$ and $t\bar{u}$ productions are detected at the LHC, they may be induced by SUSY FCNC couplings. We show that the precise measurement of single top quark production cross sections at the LHC is a powerful probe for the details of the SUSY FCNC couplings.

Production of Scalar Higgs Bosons Associated with $Z^0$ Boson at the CERN LHC in the MSSM

We investigate the associated production of a scalar Higgs boson ($h^0$ or $H^0$) with $Z^0$ boson in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including the contributions from $b\bar{b}$ annihilation at the tree level and gluon fusion via quark and squark loops. We quantitatively analyze the total cross sections in the mSUGRA scenario. For the production of $h^0$ associated with $Z^0$, we find that in most of the parameter regions, the contributions from initial $b\bar{b}$ and $gg$ are at a level of one percent of the total cross section and therefore almost insignificant. For the production of $H^0$ associated with $Z^0$, the contributions from $b\bar{b}$ channel can be much larger than those from light quark initial states. Especially for large $\tanβ$, the increment can reach about one order of magnitude. Thus, when considering the associated production of $H^0$ and $Z^0$ at the LHC, the contributions from $b\bar{b}$ annihilation should be taken into account seriously.

$t\to cV$ via SUSY FCNC couplings in the unconstrained MSSM

We recalculate the branching ratios for $t\to cV$ ($V=g,γ,Z$) induced by SUSY FCNC couplings within the general unconstrained MSSM framework using mass eigenstate approach. Our results show that the branching ratios for these decays are larger than ones reported in previous literatures in the MSSM with R-parity conservation, and they can reach $\sim 10^{-4}$, $\sim 10^{-6}$, and $\sim 10^{-6}$, respectively, for favorable parameter values allowed by current precise experiments. Thus, the branching ratios for $t\to cg$ and $t\to cγ$ may be measurable at the LHC.

Effects of R-parity Violation on the Charged Higgs Boson Decays

We calculate one-loop R-parity-violating couplings corrections to the processes $H^-\to τ\bar{ν_τ}$ and $H^-\to b\bar{t}$. We find that the corrections to the $H^-\to τ\bar{ν_τ}$ decay mode are generally about 0.1%, and can be negligible. But the corrections to the $H^-\to b\bar{t}$ decay mode can reach a few percent for the favored parameters.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for associated production of top squarks and charginos at the CERN LHC

We present the calculations of the complete next-to-leading order (NLO) inclusive total cross sections for the associated production processes $pp\to \tilde{t}_i\tildeχ_k^-+X$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Our calculations show that the total cross sections for the $\tilde{t}_1\tildeχ_1^-$ production for the lighter top squark masses in the region 100 GeV $< m_{\tilde{t}_1}<$ 160 GeV can reach 1 pb in the favorable parameter space allowed by the current precise experiments, and in other cases the total cross sections generally vary from 10 fb to several hundred fb except both $m_{\tilde{t}_1}>$ 500 GeV and the $\tilde{t}_2\tildeχ_2^-$ production channel. Moreover, we find that the NLO QCD corrections in general enhance the leading order total cross sections significantly, and vastly reduce the dependence of the total cross sections on the renormalization/factorization scale, which leads to increased confidence in predictions based on these results.

Supersymmetric electroweak corrections to t bar{t} h associated production at e+e- colliders

The electroweak corrections of order ${\cal O}(α_{\rm em} m^2_{t,b}/m^2_w)$ and ${\cal O}(α_{\rm em} m^3_{t,b}/m^3_w)$ to Higgs boson associated production with top quark pair are calculated at $e^+e^-$ colliders in the standard model (SM), the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) and the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). These corrections are a few percent in general, and in the MSSM they can be over ten percent for favorable parameter values allowing by current precise experiments. The total cross sections including the electroweak corrections get their maximal near $\sqrt{s} = 700$GeV, and can reach 2.8 fb, 2.7 fb and 2.5 fb in the SM, the 2HDM and the MSSM, respectively.

The NLO QCD corrections in general enhance the leading order total cross sections significantly, and vastly reduce the dependence of the total cross sections on the renormalization/factorization scale, which leads to increased confidence in predictions based on these results.

Spin Correlations in top quark pair production near threshold at the $ e^- e^+ $ Linear Collider

We investigate the spin correlations in top quark pair production near threshold at the $ e^- e^+ $ linear collider. Comparing with the results above the threshold region, we find that near the threshold region the off-diagonal basis, the optimized decomposition of the top quark spins above the threshold region, does not exist, and the beamline basis is the optimal basis, in which there are the dominant spin components: the up-down (UD) component for $e_L^- e^+$ scattering and the down-up (DU) component for $e_R^- e^+$ scattering can make up more than 50% of the total cross section, respectively.
