Capabilities of Gemini Models in Medicine

Excellence in a wide variety of medical applications poses considerable challenges for AI, requiring advanced reasoning, access to up-to-date medical knowledge and understanding of complex multimodal data. Gemini models, with strong general capabilities in multimodal and long-context reasoning, offer exciting possibilities in medicine. Building on these core strengths of Gemini, we introduce Med-Gemini, a family of highly capable multimodal models that are specialized in medicine with the ability to seamlessly use web search, and that can be efficiently tailored to novel modalities using custom encoders. We evaluate Med-Gemini on 14 medical benchmarks, establishing new state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance on 10 of them, and surpass the GPT-4 model family on every benchmark where a direct comparison is viable, often by a wide margin. On the popular MedQA (USMLE) benchmark, our best-performing Med-Gemini model achieves SoTA performance of 91.1% accuracy, using a novel uncertainty-guided search strategy. On 7 multimodal benchmarks including NEJM Image Challenges and MMMU (health & medicine), Med-Gemini improves over GPT-4V by an average relative margin of 44.5%. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Med-Gemini's long-context capabilities through SoTA performance on a needle-in-a-haystack retrieval task from long de-identified health records and medical video question answering, surpassing prior bespoke methods using only in-context learning. Finally, Med-Gemini's performance suggests real-world utility by surpassing human experts on tasks such as medical text summarization, alongside demonstrations of promising potential for multimodal medical dialogue, medical research and education. Taken together, our results offer compelling evidence for Med-Gemini's potential, although further rigorous evaluation will be crucial before real-world deployment in this safety-critical domain.

Existence of solutions to the generalized dual Minkowski problem

Given a real number $q$ and a star body in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space, the generalized dual curvature measure of a convex body was introduced by Lutwak-Yang-Zhang [43]. The corresponding generalized dual Minkowski problem is studied in this paper. By using variational methods, we solve the generalized dual Minkowski problem for $q<0$, and the even generalized dual Minkowski problem for $0\leq q\leq1$. We also obtain a sufficient condition for the existence of solutions to the even generalized dual Minkowski problem for $1<q<n$.

Nonuniqueness and nonexistence results for the Lp-dual Minkowski problem with supercritical exponents

In this paper, the $\mathit{L}_{\mathit{p}}$-dual Minkowski problem of Monge-Ampère type were studied for different $\mathit{p}$ and $\mathit{q}$. Some new nonuniqueness results were obtained for the range $\mathit{p}\le\mathit{q}-\mathit{n}+1$, $\mathit{p}\lt\mathit{q}-λ_{1}(\mathit{n},\mathit{k})$ and $\mathit{f}\equiv1$, where $λ_{1}(\mathit{n},\mathit{k})$ is the best constant of the Poincaré inequality on $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ with k-symmetricity. The second part of this paper is devoted to prove some new nonexistence results for the supercritical range $\mathit{p}\leq-\mathit{q}, \mathit{q}\geq\mathit{n}$ on all dimensional spaces. The key ingredient of our proof was based on a generalization of Chou-Wang identity for $\mathit{q}=\mathit{n}$, $\mathit{p}$=$-\mathit{q}$ to a full range of $(\mathit{p},\mathit{q})$.

LE-SSL-MOS: Self-Supervised Learning MOS Prediction with Listener Enhancement

Recently, researchers have shown an increasing interest in automatically predicting the subjective evaluation for speech synthesis systems. This prediction is a challenging task, especially on the out-of-domain test set. In this paper, we proposed a novel fusion model for MOS prediction that combines supervised and unsupervised approaches. In the supervised aspect, we developed an SSL-based predictor called LE-SSL-MOS. The LE-SSL-MOS utilizes pre-trained self-supervised learning models and further improves prediction accuracy by utilizing the opinion scores of each utterance in the listener enhancement branch. In the unsupervised aspect, two steps are contained: we fine-tuned the unit language model (ULM) using highly intelligible domain data to improve the correlation of an unsupervised metric - SpeechLMScore. Another is that we utilized ASR confidence as a new metric with the help of ensemble learning. To our knowledge, this is the first architecture that fuses supervised and unsupervised methods for MOS prediction. With these approaches, our experimental results on the VoiceMOS Challenge 2023 show that LE-SSL-MOS performs better than the baseline. Our fusion system achieved an absolute improvement of 13% over LE-SSL-MOS on the noisy and enhanced speech track. Our system ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the French speech synthesis track and the challenge's noisy and enhanced speech track.

Dual-comb spectroscopy over 100km open-air path

Satellite-based greenhouse gases (GHG) sensing technologies play a critical role in the study of global carbon emissions and climate change. However, none of the existing satellite-based GHG sensing technologies can achieve the measurement of broad bandwidth, high temporal-spatial resolution, and high sensitivity at the same time. Recently, dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been proposed as a superior candidate technology for GHG sensing because it can measure broadband spectra with high temporal-spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The main barrier to DCS's display on satellites is its short measurement distance in open air achieved thus far. Prior research has not been able to implement DCS over 20 km of open-air path. Here, by developing a bistatic setup using time-frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we have implemented DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. Our experiment successfully measured GHG with 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency and achieved a CO2 sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 minutes and <0.6 ppm in 36 minutes. Our results represent a significant step towards advancing the implementation of DCS as a satellite-based technology and improving technologies for GHG monitoring

Observation of Floquet Chern insulators of light

The field of topological photonics studies unique and robust photonic systems that are immune to defects and disorders due to the protection of their underlying topological phases. Mostly implemented in static systems, the studied topological phases are often defined in linear photonic band structures. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate Floquet Chern insulators in periodically driven nonlinear photonic crystals, where the topological phase is controlled by the polarization and the frequency of the driving field. Mediated by strong material nonlinearity, our system enters what we call the 'strong Floquet coupling regime', where the photonic Floquet bands cross and open new energy gaps with non-trivial topology as observed in our transient sum-frequency generation measurements. Our work offers new opportunities to explore the role of classical optical nonlinearity in topological phases and their applications in nonlinear optoelectronics.

OSRE: Object-to-Spot Rotation Estimation for Bike Parking Assessment

Current deep models provide remarkable object detection in terms of object classification and localization. However, estimating object rotation with respect to other visual objects in the visual context of an input image still lacks deep studies due to the unavailability of object datasets with rotation annotations. This paper tackles these two challenges to solve the rotation estimation of a parked bike with respect to its parking area. First, we leverage the power of 3D graphics to build a camera-agnostic well-annotated Synthetic Bike Rotation Dataset (SynthBRSet). Then, we propose an object-to-spot rotation estimator (OSRE) by extending the object detection task to further regress the bike rotations in two axes. Since our model is purely trained on synthetic data, we adopt image smoothing techniques when deploying it on real-world images. The proposed OSRE is evaluated on synthetic and real-world data providing promising results. Our data and code are available at \href{https://github.com/saghiralfasly/OSRE-Project}{https://github.com/saghiralfasly/OSRE-Project}.

Stochastic Variance Reduced Gradient for affine rank minimization problem

We develop an efficient stochastic variance reduced gradient descent algorithm to solve the affine rank minimization problem consists of finding a matrix of minimum rank from linear measurements. The proposed algorithm as a stochastic gradient descent strategy enjoys a more favorable complexity than full gradients. It also reduces the variance of the stochastic gradient at each iteration and accelerate the rate of convergence. We prove that the proposed algorithm converges linearly in expectation to the solution under a restricted isometry condition. The numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm has a clearly advantageous balance of efficiency, adaptivity, and accuracy compared with other state-of-the-art greedy algorithms.

Analysis of a Direct Separation Method Based on Adaptive Chirplet Transform for Signals with Crossover Instantaneous Frequencies

In many applications, it is necessary to retrieve the sub-signal building blocks of a multi-component signal, which is usually non-stationary in real-world and real-life applications. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD), synchrosqueezing transform (SST), signal separation operation (SSO), and iterative filtering decomposition (IFD) have been proposed and developed for this purpose. However, these computational methods are restricted by the specification of well-separation of the sub-signal frequency curves for multi-component signals. On the other hand, the chirplet transform-based signal separation scheme (CT3S) that extends SSO from the two-dimensional "time-frequency" plane to the three-dimensional "time-frequency-chirp rate" space was recently proposed in our recent work to remove the frequency-separation specification, and thereby allowing "frequency crossing". The main objective of this present paper is to carry out an in-depth error analysis study of instantaneous frequency estimation and component recovery for the CT3S method.

Precise electronic structures of amorphous solids: unraveling the color origin and photocatalysis of black titania

Water splitting through efficient catalysts represents an ultimate solution for carbon neutrality within 40 years. To achieve this goal, amorphous photocatalysts are noted for their promising performances. Among them, the best known is black titania (amorphous TiOx, x < 2). However, despite the large number of studies on black titania, its color origin, structure-property relationship, and photocatalytic mechanism remain a topic of hot debate, largely due to the difficulty to calculate its precise electronic structure. Here, using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we report the precise electronic structures of black titania and further reveal the generic evolution pattern of the electronic structures of covalent compounds upon amorphization and reduction. Moreover, surface adsorption of the co-catalyst atoms (e.g., Pt) on amorphous substances is simulated for the first time: the disordered surface enables easy accommodation of the co-catalyst atoms, while the extended electronic states facilitate the separation of photo-induced electrons and holes, beneficial for hydrogen evolution. This study elucidates the workings of amorphous catalysts and offers practical guidance for enhancing their performances.

Learnable Irrelevant Modality Dropout for Multimodal Action Recognition on Modality-Specific Annotated Videos

With the assumption that a video dataset is multimodality annotated in which auditory and visual modalities both are labeled or class-relevant, current multimodal methods apply modality fusion or cross-modality attention. However, effectively leveraging the audio modality in vision-specific annotated videos for action recognition is of particular challenge. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel audio-visual framework that effectively leverages the audio modality in any solely vision-specific annotated dataset. We adopt the language models (e.g., BERT) to build a semantic audio-video label dictionary (SAVLD) that maps each video label to its most K-relevant audio labels in which SAVLD serves as a bridge between audio and video datasets. Then, SAVLD along with a pretrained audio multi-label model are used to estimate the audio-visual modality relevance during the training phase. Accordingly, a novel learnable irrelevant modality dropout (IMD) is proposed to completely drop out the irrelevant audio modality and fuse only the relevant modalities. Moreover, we present a new two-stream video Transformer for efficiently modeling the visual modalities. Results on several vision-specific annotated datasets including Kinetics400 and UCF-101 validated our framework as it outperforms most relevant action recognition methods.

A three-dimensional dual-domain deep network for high-pitch and sparse helical CT reconstruction

In this paper, we propose a new GPU implementation of the Katsevich algorithm for helical CT reconstruction. Our implementation divides the sinograms and reconstructs the CT images pitch by pitch. By utilizing the periodic properties of the parameters of the Katsevich algorithm, our method only needs to calculate these parameters once for all the pitches and so has lower GPU-memory burdens and is very suitable for deep learning. By embedding our implementation into the network, we propose an end-to-end deep network for the high pitch helical CT reconstruction with sparse detectors. Since our network utilizes the features extracted from both sinograms and CT images, it can simultaneously reduce the streak artifacts caused by the sparsity of sinograms and preserve fine details in the CT images. Experiments show that our network outperforms the related methods both in subjective and objective evaluations.

Maximizing the Sum of the Distances between Four Points on the Unit Hemisphere

In this paper, we prove a geometrical inequality which states that for any four points on a hemisphere with the unit radius, the largest sum of distances between the points is 4+4*sqrt(2). In our method, we have constructed a rectangular neighborhood of the local maximum point in the feasible set, which size is explicitly determined, and proved that (1): the objective function is bounded by a quadratic polynomial which takes the local maximum point as the unique critical point in the neighborhood, and (2): the rest part of the feasible set can be partitioned into a finite union of a large number of very small cubes so that on each small cube the conjecture can be verified by estimating the objective function with exact numerical computation.

All-optical probe of three-dimensional topological insulators based on high-harmonic generation by circularly-polarized laser fields

We report the observation of a novel nonlinear optical response from the prototypical three-dimensional topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ through the process of high-order harmonic generation. We find that the generation efficiency increases as the laser polarization is changed from linear to elliptical, and it becomes maximum for circular polarization. With the aid of a microscopic theory and a detailed analysis of the measured spectra, we reveal that such anomalous enhancement encodes the characteristic topology of the band structure that originates from the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and time-reversal symmetry protection. Our study reveals a new platform for chiral strong-field physics and presents a novel, contact-free, all-optical approach for the spectroscopy of topological insulators. The implications are in ultrafast probing of topological phase transitions, light-field driven dissipationless electronics, and quantum computation.

EPSANet: An Efficient Pyramid Squeeze Attention Block on Convolutional Neural Network

Recently, it has been demonstrated that the performance of a deep convolutional neural network can be effectively improved by embedding an attention module into it. In this work, a novel lightweight and effective attention method named Pyramid Squeeze Attention (PSA) module is proposed. By replacing the 3x3 convolution with the PSA module in the bottleneck blocks of the ResNet, a novel representational block named Efficient Pyramid Squeeze Attention (EPSA) is obtained. The EPSA block can be easily added as a plug-and-play component into a well-established backbone network, and significant improvements on model performance can be achieved. Hence, a simple and efficient backbone architecture named EPSANet is developed in this work by stacking these ResNet-style EPSA blocks. Correspondingly, a stronger multi-scale representation ability can be offered by the proposed EPSANet for various computer vision tasks including but not limited to, image classification, object detection, instance segmentation, etc. Without bells and whistles, the performance of the proposed EPSANet outperforms most of the state-of-the-art channel attention methods. As compared to the SENet-50, the Top-1 accuracy is improved by 1.93% on ImageNet dataset, a larger margin of +2.7 box AP for object detection and an improvement of +1.7 mask AP for instance segmentation by using the Mask-RCNN on MS-COCO dataset are obtained. Our source code is available at:https://github.com/murufeng/EPSANet.

Robust Graph Learning Under Wasserstein Uncertainty

Graphs are playing a crucial role in different fields since they are powerful tools to unveil intrinsic relationships among signals. In many scenarios, an accurate graph structure representing signals is not available at all and that motivates people to learn a reliable graph structure directly from observed signals. However, in real life, it is inevitable that there exists uncertainty in the observed signals due to noise measurements or limited observability, which causes a reduction in reliability of the learned graph. To this end, we propose a graph learning framework using Wasserstein distributionally robust optimization (WDRO) which handles uncertainty in data by defining an uncertainty set on distributions of the observed data. Specifically, two models are developed, one of which assumes all distributions in uncertainty set are Gaussian distributions and the other one has no prior distributional assumption. Instead of using interior point method directly, we propose two algorithms to solve the corresponding models and show that our algorithms are more time-saving. In addition, we also reformulate both two models into Semi-Definite Programming (SDP), and illustrate that they are intractable in the scenario of large-scale graph. Experiments on both synthetic and real world data are carried out to validate the proposed framework, which show that our scheme can learn a reliable graph in the context of uncertainty.

Floquet quadrupole photonic crystals protected by space-time symmetry

High-order topological phases, such as those with nontrivial quadrupole moments, protect edge states that are themselves topological insulators in lower dimensions. So far, most quadrupole phases of light are explored in linear optical systems, which are protected by spatial symmetries or synthetic symmetries. Here we present Floquet quadrupole phases in driven nonlinear photonic crystals (PhCs) that are protected by space-time screw symmetries. We start by illustrating space-time symmetries by tracking the trajectory of instantaneous optical axes of the driven media. Our Floquet quadrupole phase is then confirmed in two independent ways: symmetry indices at high-symmetry momentum points and calculations of the nested Wannier bands. Our work presents a general framework to analyze symmetries in driven optical materials and paves the way to further exploring symmetry-protected topological phases in Floquet systems and their optoelectronic applications.

Expansions in multiple bases over general alphabets

Expansions in non-integer bases have been extensively investigated since a pioneering work of Rényi. We introduce a more general framework of alphabet-base systems that also includes Pedicini's general alphabets and the multiple-base expansions of Neunhäuserer and Li. We extend the Parry type lexicographic theory to this setup, and we improve and generalize various former results on unique expansions.
