Quantum-Accurate Spectral Neighbor Analysis Potential Models for Ni-Mo Binary Alloys and FCC Metals

In recent years, efficient inter-atomic potentials approaching the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been developed using rigorous atomic descriptors satisfying strict invariances, for example, to translation, rotation, permutation of homonuclear atoms, among others. In this work, we generalize the spectral neighbor analysis potential (SNAP) model to bcc-fcc binary alloy systems. We demonstrate that machine-learned SNAP models can yield significant improvements even over well-established, high-performing embedded atom method (EAM) and modified EAM (MEAM) potentials for fcc Cu and Ni. We also report on the development of a SNAP model for the fcc Ni-bcc Mo binary system by machine learning a carefully-constructed large computed data set of elemental and intermetallic compounds. We demonstrate that this binary Ni-Mo SNAP model can achieve excellent agreement with experiments in the prediction of Ni-Mo phase diagram as well as near-DFT accuracy in the prediction of many key properties such as elastic constants, formation energies, melting points, etc., across the entire binary composition range. In contrast, the existing Ni-Mo EAM has significant errors in the prediction of the phase diagram and completely fails in binary compounds. This work provides a systematic model development process for multicomponent alloy systems, including an efficient procedure to optimize the hyper-parameters in the model fitting, and paves the way to long-time, large-scale simulations of such systems.

Generating Periodic Grain Boundary Structures: Algorithm and Open-Source Python Library

An algorithm implemented in an open-source python library was developed for building periodic coincidence site lattice (CSL) grain boundary models in a universal fashion. The software framework aims to generate tilt and twist grain boundaries from cubic and tetragonal crystals for ab-initio and classical atomistic simulation. This framework has two useful features: i) it can calculate all the CSL matrices for generating CSL from a given Sigma (Σ) value and rotation axis, allowing the users to build the specific CSL and grain boundary models; ii) it provides a convenient command line tool to enable high-throughput generation of tilt and twist grain boundaries by assigning an input crystal structure, Σ value, rotation axis, and grain boundary plane. The developed algorithm in the open-source python library is expected to facilitate studies of grain boundary in materials science. The software framework is available on the website: aimsgb.org.

On the Beamformed Broadcast Signaling for Millimeter Wave Cell Discovery: Performance Analysis and Design Insight

Availability of abundant spectrum has enabled millimeter wave (mm-wave) as a prominent candidate solution for the next generation cellular networks. Highly directional transmissions are essential for exploitation of mm-wave bands to compensate high propagation loss and attenuation. The directional transmission, nevertheless, necessitates a specific design for mm-wave initial cell discovery, as conventional omni-directional broadcast signaling may fail in delivering the cell discovery information. To address this issue, this paper provides an analytical framework for mm-wave beamformed cell discovery based on an information theoretical approach. Design options are compared considering four fundamental and representative broadcast signaling schemes to evaluate discovery latency and signaling overhead. The schemes are then simulated under realistic system parameters. Analytical and simulation results reveals four key findings: (i) For cell discovery without knowledge of beacon timing, analog/hybrid beamforming performs as well as digital beamforming in terms of cell discovery latency; (ii) Single beam exhaustive scan optimize the latency, however leads to overhead penalty; (iii) Multi-beam simultaneous scan can significantly reduce the overhead, and provide the flexibility to achieve trade-off between the latency and the overhead; (iv) The latency and the overhead are relatively insensitive to extreme low block error rates.

Challenges & Solutions for above 6 GHz Radio Access Network Integration for Future Mobile Communication Systems

Mobile communication technology has been rapidly evolving ever since its first introduction in the late 1980s. The development witnessed is not just in the refinement of the radio access techniques, but also in the progression towards offering sophisticated features and services to the mobile phone users. To fulfill this ever-growing user demand and market trends, frequency ranges in millimeter wave bands are envisioned for wireless radio transmission. To respond to this trends, the EU-funded mmMAGIC project has been launched and its main objective is to design and develop radio access techniques operating in 6-100 GHz bands. When it comes to developing technologies for systems operating these frequency ranges, a major challenge encountered will be in terms of its radio access network integration. Unquestionably, issues at various aspects of physical layer design, channel modelling, architecture, network functions and deployment will be encountered; problems in multi-node and multi-antenna transceiver designs will surface as well. The work carried in this project will address those challenges and propose solutions; but additionally, measure its efficiency against the project specific KPIs set to meet the requirements of the operational future 5G systems. The main intention of this paper is to outline some of the challenges, more specifically to highlight the network integration challenges, and discuss some of its technical solutions. The primary purpose here is to focus towards integrated 5G technology, thereby opening further research avenues for the exploration of new and alternate frequency bands in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Hybrid LISA Precoding for Multiuser Millimeter-Wave Communications

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications plays an important role for future cellular networks because of the vast amount of spectrum available in the underutilized mmWave frequency bands. To overcome the huge free space omnidirectional path loss in those frequency bands, the deployment of a very large number of antenna elements at the base station is crucial. The complexity, power consumption and costs resulting from the large number of antenna elements can be reduced by limiting the number of RF chains. This leads to hybrid precoding and combining, which, in contrast to the traditional fully digital precoding and combining, moves a part of the signal processing from the digital to the analog domain. This paper proposes new algorithms for the design of hybrid precoders and combiners in a multiuser scenario. The algorithms are based on the previously proposed Linear Successive Allocation method developed for the traditional fully digital version. It successively allocates data streams to users and suppresses the respective interstream interference in two stages, which perfectly matches the hybrid architecture. Furthermore, a low-complexity version is developed by exploiting the typical structure of mmWave channels. The good performance of the proposed method and its low-complexity version is demonstrated by simulation results.

Some Supplementaries to The Counting Semantics for Abstract Argumentation

Dung's abstract argumentation framework consists of a set of interacting arguments and a series of semantics for evaluating them. Those semantics partition the powerset of the set of arguments into two classes: extensions and non-extensions. In order to reason with a specific semantics, one needs to take a credulous or skeptical approach, i.e. an argument is eventually accepted, if it is accepted in one or all extensions, respectively. In our previous work \cite{ref-pu2015counting}, we have proposed a novel semantics, called \emph{counting semantics}, which allows for a more fine-grained assessment to arguments by counting the number of their respective attackers and defenders based on argument graph and argument game. In this paper, we continue our previous work by presenting some supplementaries about how to choose the damaging factor for the counting semantics, and what relationships with some existing approaches, such as Dung's classical semantics, generic gradual valuations. Lastly, an axiomatic perspective on the ranking semantics induced by our counting semantics are presented.

Attacker and Defender Counting Approach for Abstract Argumentation

In Dung's abstract argumentation, arguments are either acceptable or unacceptable, given a chosen notion of acceptability. This gives a coarse way to compare arguments. In this paper, we propose a counting approach for a more fine-gained assessment to arguments by counting the number of their respective attackers and defenders based on argument graph and argument game. An argument is more acceptable if the proponent puts forward more number of defenders for it and the opponent puts forward less number of attackers against it. We show that our counting model has two well-behaved properties: normalization and convergence. Then, we define a counting semantics based on this model, and investigate some general properties of the semantics.

Thermal Runaway, Flash Sintering and Asymmetrical Microstructural Development of ZnO and ZnO-Bi2O3 under Direct Currents

DC flash sintering of both pure and 0.5 mol. % Bi2O3-doped ZnO at a relatively high activating field of 300 V/cm has been investigated. It is demonstrated that even high-purity ZnO single crystals can "flash" at 870C. In comparison, flash sintering occurs at a substantially lower onset temperature of 550C in ZnO powder specimens, indicating the important roles of surfaces and/or grain boundaries. A model has been developed to forecast the thermal runaway conditions and the predictions are in excellent agreements with the observed onset flash temperatures, attesting that the flash starts as a thermal runaway in at least these ZnO based systems. Interestingly, enhanced grain growth is observed at the anode side of the pure ZnO specimens with an abrupt change in the grain sizes, indicating the occurrence of electric-potential-induced abnormal grain growth. With a large current density, the growth of aligned hexagonal single-crystalline rods toward the anode direction is evident in the ZnO powder specimen. Moreover, Bi2O3 doping defers the onset of flash sintering, which can be explained from the formation of space charges at grain boundaries, and it homogenizes the microstructure due to a liquid-phase sintering effect. The key scientific contributions of this study include the development of a model to predict the thermal runaway conditions that are coincident with the observed onset flash sintering temperatures, the clarification of how flash starts in ZnO based specimens, and the observation and explanation of diversifying phenomena of sintering and microstructural development under applied electric currents.

Argument Ranking with Categoriser Function

Recently, ranking-based semantics is proposed to rank-order arguments from the most acceptable to the weakest one(s), which provides a graded assessment to arguments. In general, the ranking on arguments is derived from the strength values of the arguments. Categoriser function is a common approach that assigns a strength value to a tree of arguments. When it encounters an argument system with cycles, then the categoriser strength is the solution of the non-linear equations. However, there is no detail about the existence and uniqueness of the solution, and how to find the solution (if exists). In this paper, we will cope with these issues via fixed point technique. In addition, we define the categoriser-based ranking semantics in light of categoriser strength, and investigate some general properties of it. Finally, the semantics is shown to satisfy some of the axioms that a ranking-based semantics should satisfy.
