Reduced fidelity approach for quantum phase transitions in spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg chains

We use reduced fidelity approach to characterize quantum phase transitions in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 dimerized Heisenberg chain in the antiferromagnetic case. The reduced fidelity susceptibilities between two nearest-neighboring spin pairs are considered. We find that they are directly related to the square of the second derivative of the ground-state energy. This enables us to conclude that the former might be a more effective indicator of the second-order quantum phase transitions than the latter. Two further exemplifications are given to confirm the conclusion is available for a broad class of systems with SU(2) and translation symmetries. Moreover, a general connection between reduced fidelity susceptibility and quantum phase transitions is illustrated.

Reduced fidelity susceptibility in the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model

We study critical behaviors of the reduced fidelity susceptibility for two neighboring sites in the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model. It is found that the divergent behaviors of the susceptibility take the form of square of logarithm, in contrast with the global ground-state fidelity susceptibility which is power divergence. In order to perform a scaling analysis, we take the square root of the susceptibility and determine the scaling exponent analytically and the result is further confirmed by numerical calculations.

Reduced fidelity susceptibility and its finite-size scaling behaviors

We derive a general formula of the reduced fidelity susceptibility when the reduced density matrix is $2\times2$ block-diagonal. By using this result and the continuous unitary transformations, we study finite-size scaling of the reduced fidelity susceptibility in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model. It is found that it can be used to characterize quantum phase transitions, implying that we can extract information of quantum phase transitions only from the fidelity of a subsystem, which is of practical meaning in experiments.

Copula Component Analysis

A framework named Copula Component Analysis (CCA) for blind source separation is proposed as a generalization of Independent Component Analysis (ICA). It differs from ICA which assumes independence of sources that the underlying components may be dependent with certain structure which is represented by Copula. By incorporating dependency structure, much accurate estimation can be made in principle in the case that the assumption of independence is invalidated. A two phrase inference method is introduced for CCA which is based on the notion of multidimensional ICA.

Numerical study of multilayer adsorption on fractal surfaces

We report a numerical study of van der Waals adsoprtion and capillary condensation effects on self-similar fractal surfaces. An assembly of uncoupled spherical pores with a power-law distributin of radii is used to model fractal surfaces with adjustable dimensions. We find that the commonly used fractal Frankel-Halsey-Hill equation systematically fails to give the correct dimension due to crossover effects, consistent with the findings of recent experiments. The effects of pore coupling and curvature dependent surface tension were also studied.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Tunneling Luminescence of the Surface of GaN Films Grown by Vapor Phase Epitaxy

We report scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of surfaces of GaN films and the observation of luminescence from those films induced by highly spatially localized injection of electrons or holes using STM. This combination of scanning tunneling luminescence (STL) with STM for GaN surfaces and the ability to observe both morphology and luminescence in GaN is the first step to investigate possible correlations between surface morphology and optical properties.

$Pb_{0.4}Bi_{1.6}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$ and Oxygen Stoichiometry: Structure, Resistivity, Fermi Surface Topology and Normal State Properties

$Pb_{0.4}Bi_{1.6}Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ ($Bi(Pb)-$2212) single crystal samples were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), $ab-$plane ($ρ_{ab}$) and $c-$axis ($ρ_c$) resistivity, and high resolution angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS). TEM reveals that the modulation in the $b-$axis for $Pb(0.4)-$doped $Bi(Pb)-$2212 is dominantly of $Pb-$type that is not sensitive to the oxygen content of the system, and the system clearly shows a structure of orthorhombic symmetry. Oxygen annealed samples exhibit a much lower $c-$axis resistivity and a resistivity minimum at $80-130$K. He-annealed samples exhibit a much higher $c-$axis resistivity and $dρ_c/dT<0$ behavior below 300K. The Fermi surface (FS) of oxygen annealed $Bi(Pb)-$2212 mapped out by ARUPS has a pocket in the FS around the $\bar{M}$ point and exhibits orthorhombic symmetry. There are flat, parallel sections of the FS, about 60\% of the maximum possible along $k_x = k_y$, and about 30\% along $k_x = - k_y$. The wavevectors connecting the flat sections are about $0.72(π, π)$ along $k_x = k_y$, and about $0.80(π, π)$ along $k_x = - k_y$, rather than $(π,π)$. The symmetry of the near-Fermi-energy dispersing states in the normal state changes between oxygen-annealed and He-annealed samples.

Localization Effects in Bi2Sr2Ca(Cu,Co)2O8+y High Temperature Superconductors

Doping Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+y with Co causes a superconductor-insulator transition. We study correlations between changes in the electrical resistivity RHOab(T) and the electronic bandstructure using identical single crystalline samples. For undoped samples the resistivity is linear in temperature and has a vanishing residual resistivity. In angle resolved photoemission these samples show dispersing band-like states. Co-doping decreases TC and causes and increase in the residual resistivity. Above a threshold Co-concentration the resistivity is metallic (drab/dT >0) at room temperature, turns insulating below a characteristic temperature Tmin and becomes super- conducting at even lower temperature. These changes in the resistivity correlate with the disappearance of the dispersing band-like states in angle resolved photoemission. We show that Anderson localization caused by the impurity potential of the doped Co-atoms provides a consistent explanation of all experimental features. Therefore the TC reduction in 3d-metal doped high- temperature superconductors is not caused by Abrikosov Gor'kov pair- breaking but by spatial localization of the carriers. The observed suppression of TC indicates that the system is in the homogenous limit of the superconductor-insulator transition. The coexistance of insulating (dRHOab/dT <0) normal state behavior and super- conductivity indicates that the superconducting ground state is formed out of spatially almost localized carriers.

Observation of a van Hove Singularity in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$ with Angle Resolved Photoemission

We have performed high energy resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of the normal state band structure of oxygen overdoped $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$. We find that there is an extended saddle point singularity in the density of states along $Γ-\bar{M}-Z$ direction. The data also indicate that there is an asymmetry in the Fermi surface for both the $Γ-\bar{M}-Z$ and perpendicular directions.

Temperature dependence of the superconducting gap anisotropy in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$

We present the first detailed data of the momentum-resolved, temperature dependence of the superconducting gap of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$, complemented by similar data on the intensity of the photoemission superconducting condensate spectral area. The gap anisotropy between the $Γ-\bar{M}$ and $Γ-X$ directions increases markedly with increasing temperature, contrary to what happens for conventional anisotropic-gap superconductors such as lead. Specifically, the size of the superconducting gap along the $Γ-X$ direction decreases to values indistinguishable from zero at temperatures for which the gap retains virtually full value along the $Γ-\bar{M}$ direction.

Effect of Iodine Doping on Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{x}$: Charge Transfer or Interlayer Coupling?

A comparative study has been made of iodine-intercalated Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{x}$ single crystal and 1 atm O$_{2}$ annealed Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{1}$O$_{x}$ single crystal using AC susceptibility measurement, X-ray photoemission (XPS) and angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS). AC susceptibility measurement indicates that O$_{2}$-doped samples studied have T$_{c}$ of 84 $^{o}$K, whereas T$_{c}$ of Iodine-doped samples studied are 80 $^{o}$K. XPS Cu 2p core level data establish that the hole concentration in the CuO$_{2}$ planes are essentially the same for these two kinds of samples. ARUPS measurements show that electronic structure of the normal states near the Fermi level has been strongly affected by iodine intercalation. We conclude that the dominant effect of iodine doping is to alter the interlayer coupling.
