Optical Refractive Index of Massive Particles and Physical Meanings of Left-handed Media

In this Letter the expression for the refractive index of de Broglie wave in the presence of a potential field is obtained and based on this, the physical meanings of negative index of refraction is revealed. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic wave propagation in a left-handed medium with negative refractive index behaves just like that of antiphotons, which is required of the complex vector field theory. It is believed that the complex vector field theory is helpful in considering the wave propagation and photonic band gap structure in the left-handed medium photonic crystals with a periodicity in negative and positive index of refraction.

Novel properties of wave propagation in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials

Some physically interesting properties and effects of wave propagation in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are investigated in this paper. We show that in the biaxially gyrotropic left-handed material, the left-right coupling of circularly polarized light arises due to the negative indices in permittivity and permeability tensors of gyrotropic media. It is well known that the geometric phases of photons inside a curved fiber in previous experiments often depend on the cone angles of solid angles subtended by a curve traced by the direction of wave vector of light, at the center of photon momentum space. Here, however, for the light propagating inside certain anisotropic left-handed media we will present a different geometric phase that is independent of the cone angles. The extra phases of electromagnetic wave resulting from the instantaneous helicity inversion at the interfaces between left- and right- handed (LRH) media is also studied in detail by using the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory. Some interesting applications (e.g., controllable position-dependent frequency shift, detection of quantum-vacuum geometric phases and helicity reversals at the LRH interfaces etc.) of above effects and phenomena in left-handed media is briefly discussed.

On some weak-gravitational effects

Some physically interesting weak-gravitational effects and phenomena are reviewed and briefly discussed: particle geometric phases due to the time-dependent spin-rotation couplings, non-inertial gravitational wave in rotating reference of frame, hyperbolical geometric quantum phases and topological dual mass as well.

Comment on ``New Experimental Limit on the Photon Rest Mass with a Rotating Torsion Balance''

During the last three decades, photon rest mass problem captured special attention of many investigators who have reported several experimental upper limits on the photon mass by using various methods. More recently, Luo et al. obtained the most new upper limit on photon rest mass of $1.2\times 10^{-54}$ Kg by means of rotating torsion balance experiment. Although Luo et al.'s experiment is excellent, here we have a supplement to their result, since our evaluation shows that the photon effective rest mass due to the self-induced charge currents in the environmental dilute plasma (e.g., the muon component and other charged particles in secondary cosmic ray flux) is just the same order of magnitude as Luo's obtained upper limit on photon mass.

Preliminary Preparations: Scattering Problem of Double-layered Sphere Containing Left-handed Media

In this paper, we present Mie coefficients of double-layered sphere and consider the scattering problem, including the topics on field distribution, electromagnetic cross section, extinction spectra as well as some potential peculiar properties arising from the presence of left-handed media. The formulation presented here can be easily generalized to cases of multiple-layered spheres.

On the self-induced charge currents in electromagnetic materials and its effects in the torsion balance experiment

We concern ourselves with the self-induced charge currents in electromagnetic materials and some related topics on its effects in the present paper. The contribution of self-induced charge currents of metamaterial media to photon effective rest mass is briefly discussed. We concentrate primarily on the torque, which is caused by the interaction of self-induced charge currents in dilute plasma with interstellar magnetic fields, acting on the torsion balance in the torsion balance experiment. It is shown by our evaluation that the muons and alpha-particles in secondary cosmic rays will contribute an effective rest mass about 10^{-54} Kg to the photon, which is compared to the newly obtained upper limit on photon rest mass in Luo's rotating torsion balance experiment.

Wave Propagation in Generalized Gyrotropic Media

Wave propagation inside generalized gyrotropic media is considered in the present Letter. It is shown that in this type of materials, the left- and right- handed circularly polarized light can be coupled to each other, which may possess some potential applications to quantum information.

Frequency-independent effective rest mass of photons in the 2TDLM model

A physically interesting {\it effective rest mass} of photons in electromagnetic media, which is independent of wave frequency $ω$, is defined in the present paper. It is verified that this frequency-independent effective rest mass of photons can be easily read off from the optical refractive index squared $n^{2}(ω) $ of commonly-seen electromagnetic media. As an illustrative example, we extract the frequency-independent effective rest mass of photons from $n^{2}(ω) $ in the {\it two time derivative Lorentz material} (2TDLM) model. The connection between effective rest mass and electromagnetic parameters of electric permittivity ($ε$) and magnetic permeability ($μ$) in left-handed media is also briefly discussed.

A unified approach to exact solutions of time-dependent Lie-algebraic quantum systems

By using the Lewis-Riesenfeld theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation, the exact solutions of the {\it time-dependent} Schrödinger equations which govern the various Lie-algebraic quantum systems in atomic physics, quantum optics, nuclear physics and laser physics are obtained. It is shown that the {\it explicit} solutions may also be obtained by working in a sub-Hilbert-space corresponding to a particular eigenvalue of the conserved generator ({\it i. e.}, the {\it time-independent} invariant) for some quantum systems without quasi-algebraic structures. The global and topological properties of geometric phases and their adiabatic limit in time-dependent quantum systems/models are briefly discussed.

Geometric phase due to helicity inversion of photons inside an optical fiber composed periodically of left- and right- handed media

In this Letter, it is claimed that, in addition to the Chiao-Wu geometric phase and optical Aharonov-Carmi geometric phase, there exists a new interesting geometric phase caused by the helicity inversion of photons in the optical fiber composed periodically of left- and right- handed (LRH) media. By making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation, we calculate this geometric phase. It is emphasized that this geometric phase should not been neglected when considering the anomalous refraction on the interfaces between left- and right- handed media.

Exact expression for decoherence factor in the time-dependent generalized Cini model

The present letter finds the complete set of exact solutions of the time-dependent generalized Cini model by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation and, based on this, the general explicit expression for the decoherence factor is therefore obtained. This study provides us with a useful method to consider the geometric phase and topological properties in the time-dependent quantum decoherence process.

Anti-shielding Effect and Negative Temperature in Instantaneously Reversed Electric Fields and Left-Handed Media

The connections between the anti-shielding effect, negative absolute temperature and superluminal light propagation in both the instantaneously reversed electric field and the left-handed media are considered in the present paper. The instantaneous inversion of the exterior electric field may cause the electric dipoles into the state of negative absolute temperature and therefore give rise to a negative effective mass term of electromagnetic field (i. e., the electromagnetic field propagating inside the negative-temperature medium will acquire an imaginary rest mass), which is said to result in the potential superluminality effect of light propagation in this anti-shielding dielectric. In left-handed media, such phenomena may also arise.

Gravitational Analogues, Geometric Effects and Gravitomagnetic Charge

This essay discusses some geometric effects associated with gravitomagnetic fields and gravitomagnetic charge as well as the gravity theory of the latter. Gravitomagnetic charge is the duality of gravitoelectric charge (mass) and is therefore also termed the dual mass which represents the topological property of gravitation. The field equation of gravitomagnetic matter is suggested and a static spherically symmetric solution of this equation is offered. A possible explanation of the anomalous acceleration acting on Pioneer spacecrafts are briefly proposed.

Exact Solutions and Geometric Phases of Dipole Oscillator in Rapidly Varying Electric Field

The present letter obtains the exact solution and geometric phase of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation governing the dipole oscillator in the exterior electric field, by making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation. It is shown that the geometric phase presents the global property of the time evolution of the dipole oscillator in time-dependent environments.
