Study of the material photon and electron background and the liquid argon detector veto efficiency of the CDEX-10 experiment

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) is located at the China Jinping underground laboratory (CJPL) and aims to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Here we present a study of the predicted photon and electron backgrounds including the background contribution of the structure materials of the germanium detector, the passive shielding materials, and the intrinsic radioactivity of the liquid argon that serves as an anti-Compton active shielding detector. A detailed geometry is modeled and the background contribution has been simulated based on the measured radioactivities of all possible components within the GEANT4 program. Then the photon and electron background level in the energy region of interest (<10^-2 events kg-1 day-1 keV-1 (cpkkd)) is predicted based on Monte Carlo simulations. The simulated result is consistent with the design goal of CDEX-10 experiment, 0.1 cpkkd, which shows that the active and passive shield design of CDEX-10 is effective and feasible.

A background simulation method for cosmogenic nuclides inside HPGe detectors for rare event experiments

Cosmogenic nuclides inside germanium detectors contribute background noise spectra quite different from ordinary external sources. We propose and discuss a nuclide decay and level transition model based on graph theory to understand the background contribution of the decay of cosmogenic nuclides inside a germanium crystal. In this work, not only was the level transition process, but the detector response time was also taken into consideration to decide whether or not to apply coincidence summing-up. We simulated the background spectrum of the internal cosmogenic nuclides in a germanium detector, and found some unique phenomena caused by the coincidence summing-up effect in the simulated spectrum. Thus, the background spectrum of each cosmogenic nuclide can be quantitatively obtained.

The CDEX-1 1 kg Point-Contact Germanium Detector for Low Mass Dark Matter Searches

The CDEX Collaboration has been established for direct detection of light dark matter particles, using ultra-low energy threshold p-type point-contact germanium detectors, in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The first 1 kg point-contact germanium detector with a sub-keV energy threshold has been tested in a passive shielding system located in CJPL. The outputs from both the point-contact p+ electrode and the outside n+ electrode make it possible to scan the lower energy range of less than 1 keV and at the same time to detect the higher energy range up to 3 MeV. The outputs from both p+ and n+ electrode may also provide a more powerful method for signal discrimination for dark matter experiment. Some key parameters, including energy resolution, dead time, decay times of internal X-rays, and system stability, have been tested and measured. The results show that the 1 kg point-contact germanium detector, together with its shielding system and electronics, can run smoothly with good performances. This detector system will be deployed for dark matter search experiments.

Introduction of the CDEX experiment

Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are the candidates of dark matter in our universe. Up to now any direct interaction of WIMP with nuclei has not been observed yet. The exclusion limits of the spin-independent cross section of WIMP-nucleon which have been experimentally obtained is about 10^{-7}pb at high mass region and only 10^{-5}pb} at low mass region. China Jin-Ping underground laboratory CJPL is the deepest underground lab in the world and provides a very promising environment for direct observation of dark matter. The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) experiment is going to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Both CJPL and CDEX have achieved a remarkable progress in recent two years. The CDEX employs a point-contact germanium semi-conductor detector PCGe whose detection threshold is less than 300 eV. We report the measurement results of Muon flux, monitoring of radioactivity and Radon concentration carried out in CJPL, as well describe the structure and performance of the 1 kg PCGe detector CDEX-1 and 10kg detector array CDEX-10 including the detectors, electronics, shielding and cooling systems. Finally we discuss the physics goals of the CDEX-1, CDEX-10 and the future CDEX-1T detectors.

The Bivariate Size-luminosity Relations for Lyman Break Galaxies at z ~ 4 - 5

We study the bivariate size-luminosity distribution of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) selected at redshifts around 4 and 5 in GOODS and the HUDF fields. We model the size-luminosity distribution as a combination of log-normal distribution (in size) and Schechter function (in luminosity), therefore it enables a more detailed study of the selection effects. We perform extensive simulations to quantify the dropout-selection completenesses and measurement biases and uncertainties in two-dimensional size and magnitude bins, and transform the theoretical size-luminosity distribution to the expected distribution for the observed data. Using maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE), we find that the Schechter function parameters for B-dropouts are α=-1.68^{+0.068}_{-0.095}, M*=-20.60^{+0.13}_{-0.17}, and ϕ*=1.79^{+0.32}_{-0.52} x 10^{-3} Mpc^{-3}. The log-normal size distribution is characterized by the peak R_0=1.34^{+0.099}_{-0.108} kpc at M_{1500}=-21 mag, width σ_{\lnR}=0.83^{+0.046}_{-0.044}, and the slope of the size-luminosity (RL) relation β=0.22^{+0.058}_{-0.056}. Similarly, for V-dropouts we find α=-1.74^{+0.15}_{-0.20}, M*=-20.53^{+0.24}_{-0.27}, ϕ*=1.55^{+0.62}_{-0.77} x 10^{-3} Mpc}^{-3}, R_0=1.19^{+0.21}_{-0.16} kpc, σ_{\lnR}=0.90^{+0.15}_{-0.065}, and β=0.25^{+0.15}_{-0.14}. The Schechter function parameters are consistent with the values in the literature, while the size distributions are wider than expected from the angular momentum distribution of the underlying dark matter halos. The slope of the size-luminosity (RL) relation is similar to those found for local disk galaxies, but considerably shallower than local early-type galaxies.

The UDF05 Follow-up of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. III. The Luminosity Function at z~6

In this paper, we present a derivation of the rest-frame 1400A luminosity function (LF) at redshift six from a new application of the maximum likelihood method by exploring the five deepest HST/ACS fields, i.e., the HUDF, two UDF05 fields, and two GOODS fields. We work on the latest improved data products, which makes our results more robust than those of previous studies. We use un-binned data and thereby make optimal use of the information contained in the dataset. We focus on the analysis to a magnitude limit where the completeness is larger than 50% to avoid possibly large errors in the faint end slope that are difficult to quantify. We also take into account scattering in and out of the dropout sample due to photometric errors by defining for each object a probability that it belongs to the dropout sample. We find the best fit Schechter parameters to the z~6 LF are: alpha = 1.87 +/- 0.14, M* = -20.25 +/- 0.23, and phi*=1.77^{+0.62}_{-0.49} * 10^{-3} Mpc^{-3}. Such a steep slope suggests that galaxies, especially the faint ones, are possibly the main sources of ionizing photons in the universe at redshift six. We also combine results from all studies at z~6 to reach an agreement in 95% confidence level that -20.45<M*<-20.05 and -1.90<alpha<-1.55. The luminosity density has been found not to evolve significantly between z~6 and z~5, but considerable evolution is detected from z~6 to z~3.

Boundary Shape Control of Navier-Stokes Equations and Geometrical Design Method for Blade's Surface in the Impeller

In this paper A Geometrical Design Method for Blade's surface $\Im$ in the impeller is provided here $\Im$ is a solution to a coupling system consisting of the well-known Navier-Stokes equations and a four order elliptic boundary value problem . The coupling system is used to describe the relations between solutions of Navier-Stokes equations and the geometry of the domain occupied by fluids, and also provides new theory and methods for optimal geometric design of the boundary of domain mentioned above. This coupling system is the Eular-Lagrange equations of the optimal control problem which is describing a new principle of the geometric design for the blade's surface of an impeller. The control variable is the surface of the blade and the state equations are Navier-Stokes equations with mixed boundary conditions in the channel between two blades. The objective functional depending on the geometry shape of blade's surface describes the dissipation energy of the flow and the power of the impeller. First we prove the existence of a solution of the optimal control problem. Then we use a special coordinate system of the Navier-Stokes equations to derive the objective functional which depends on the surface $Θ$ explicitly. We also show the weakly continuity of the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with respect to the geometry shape of the blade's surface.

Applicability of Perturbative QCD to Pion Virtual Compton Scattering

We study explicitly the applicability of perturbative QCD (pQCD) to the pion virtual Compton scattering. It is found that there are central-region singularities introduced by the QCD running coupling constant, in addition to the end-point singularities generally existed in other exclusive processes such as the pion form factor. We introduce a simple technique to evaluate the contributions from these singularities, so that we can arrive at a judgement that these contributions will be unharmful to the applicability of pQCD at certain energy scale, i.e., the ``work point'' which is defined to determine when pQCD is applicable to exclusive processes. The applicability of pQCD for different pion distribution amplitudes are explored in detail. We show that pQCD begins to work at 10 ${GeV}^2$. If we relax our constraint to a weak sense, the work point may be as low as 4 ${GeV}^2$.
