Self-Detoxifying Language Models via Toxification Reversal

Language model detoxification aims to minimize the risk of generating offensive or harmful content in pretrained language models (PLMs) for safer deployment. Existing methods can be roughly categorized as finetuning-based and decoding-based. However, the former is often resource-intensive, while the latter relies on additional components and potentially compromises the generation fluency. In this paper, we propose a more lightweight approach that enables the PLM itself to achieve "self-detoxification". Our method is built upon the observation that prepending a negative steering prompt can effectively induce PLMs to generate toxic content. At the same time, we are inspired by the recent research in the interpretability field, which formulates the evolving contextualized representations within the PLM as an information stream facilitated by the attention layers. Drawing on this idea, we devise a method to identify the toxification direction from the normal generation process to the one prompted with the negative prefix, and then steer the generation to the reversed direction by manipulating the information movement within the attention layers. Experimental results show that our approach, without any fine-tuning or extra components, can achieve comparable performance with state-of-the-art methods.

Target-oriented Proactive Dialogue Systems with Personalization: Problem Formulation and Dataset Curation

Target-oriented dialogue systems, designed to proactively steer conversations toward predefined targets or accomplish specific system-side goals, are an exciting area in conversational AI. In this work, by formulating a pair as the conversation target, we explore a novel problem of personalized target-oriented dialogue by considering personalization during the target accomplishment process. However, there remains an emergent need for high-quality datasets, and building one from scratch requires tremendous human effort. To address this, we propose an automatic dataset curation framework using a role-playing approach. Based on this framework, we construct a large-scale personalized target-oriented dialogue dataset, TopDial, which comprises about 18K multi-turn dialogues. The experimental results show that this dataset is of high quality and could contribute to exploring personalized target-oriented dialogue.

Unified framework of the microscopic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and its application to Skyrmion dynamics

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation is widely used to describe magnetization dynamics. We develop a unified framework of the microscopic LLG equation based on the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. We present a unified treatment for expressing the microscopic LLG equation in several limiting cases, including the adiabatic, inertial, and nonadiabatic limits with respect to the precession frequency for a magnetization with fixed magnitude, as well as the spatial adiabatic limit for the magnetization with slow variation in both its magnitude and direction. The coefficients of those terms in the microscopic LLG equation are explicitly expressed in terms of nonequilibrium Green's functions. As a concrete example, this microscopic theory is applied to simulate the dynamics of a magnetic Skyrmion driven by quantum parametric pumping. Our work provides a practical formalism of the microscopic LLG equation for exploring magnetization dynamics.

PatchProto Networks for Few-shot Visual Anomaly Classification

The visual anomaly diagnosis can automatically analyze the defective products, which has been widely applied in industrial quality inspection. The anomaly classification can classify the defective products into different categories. However, the anomaly samples are hard to access in practice, which impedes the training of canonical machine learning models. This paper studies a practical issue that anomaly samples for training are extremely scarce, i.e., few-shot learning (FSL). Utilizing the sufficient normal samples, we propose PatchProto networks for few-shot anomaly classification. Different from classical FSL methods, PatchProto networks only extract CNN features of defective regions of interest, which serves as the prototypes for few-shot learning. Compared with basic few-shot classifier, the experiment results on MVTec-AD dataset show PatchProto networks significantly improve the few-shot anomaly classification accuracy.

Segmented Harmonic Loss: Handling Class-Imbalanced Multi-Label Clinical Data for Medical Coding with Large Language Models

The precipitous rise and adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) have shattered expectations with the fastest adoption rate of any consumer-facing technology in history. Healthcare, a field that traditionally uses NLP techniques, was bound to be affected by this meteoric rise. In this paper, we gauge the extent of the impact by evaluating the performance of LLMs for the task of medical coding on real-life noisy data. We conducted several experiments on MIMIC III and IV datasets with encoder-based LLMs, such as BERT. Furthermore, we developed Segmented Harmonic Loss, a new loss function to address the extreme class imbalance that we found to prevail in most medical data in a multi-label scenario by segmenting and decoupling co-occurring classes of the dataset with a new segmentation algorithm. We also devised a technique based on embedding similarity to tackle noisy data. Our experimental results show that when trained with the proposed loss, the LLMs achieve significant performance gains even on noisy long-tailed datasets, outperforming the F1 score of the state-of-the-art by over ten percentage points.

Control estimates for 0th order pseudodifferential operators

We introduce the control conditions for 0th order pseudodifferential operators $\mathbf{P}$ whose real parts satisfy the Morse--Smale dynamical condition. We obtain microlocal control estimates under the control conditions. As a result, we show that there are no singular profiles in the solution to the evolution equation $(i\partial_t-\mathbf{P})u=f$ when $\mathbf{P}$ has a damping term that satisfies the control condition and $f\in C^{\infty}$. This is motivated by the study of a microlocal model for the damped internal waves.

Scene-aware Egocentric 3D Human Pose Estimation

Egocentric 3D human pose estimation with a single head-mounted fisheye camera has recently attracted attention due to its numerous applications in virtual and augmented reality. Existing methods still struggle in challenging poses where the human body is highly occluded or is closely interacting with the scene. To address this issue, we propose a scene-aware egocentric pose estimation method that guides the prediction of the egocentric pose with scene constraints. To this end, we propose an egocentric depth estimation network to predict the scene depth map from a wide-view egocentric fisheye camera while mitigating the occlusion of the human body with a depth-inpainting network. Next, we propose a scene-aware pose estimation network that projects the 2D image features and estimated depth map of the scene into a voxel space and regresses the 3D pose with a V2V network. The voxel-based feature representation provides the direct geometric connection between 2D image features and scene geometry, and further facilitates the V2V network to constrain the predicted pose based on the estimated scene geometry. To enable the training of the aforementioned networks, we also generated a synthetic dataset, called EgoGTA, and an in-the-wild dataset based on EgoPW, called EgoPW-Scene. The experimental results of our new evaluation sequences show that the predicted 3D egocentric poses are accurate and physically plausible in terms of human-scene interaction, demonstrating that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Sciences with the 2.5-meter Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST)

The Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST) is a dedicated photometric surveying facility being built jointly by the University of Science and Technology of China and the Purple Mountain Observatory. It is equipped with a 2.5-meter diameter primary mirror, an active optics system, and a mosaic CCD camera with 0.73 gigapixels on the primary focal plane for high-quality image capture over an FOV of 6.5-square-degree. It is anticipated that WFST will be set up at the Lenghu site in the summer of 2023 and begin to observe the northern sky in four optical bands (u, g, r, and i) with a range of cadences, from hourly/daily in the Deep High-Cadence Survey (DHS) program to semiweekly in the Wide-Field Survey (WFS) program, three months later. During a photometric night, a nominal 30 s exposure in the WFS program will reach a depth of 22.27, 23.32, 22.84, and 22.31 (AB magnitudes) in these four bands, respectively, allowing for the detection of a tremendous amount of transients in the low-z universe and a systematic investigation of the variability of Galactic and extragalactic objects. In the DHS program, intranight 90 s exposures as deep as 23 (u) and 24 mag (g), in combination with target of opportunity follow-ups, will provide a unique opportunity to explore energetic transients in demand for high sensitivities, including the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events, supernovae within a few hours of their explosions, tidal disruption events and fast, luminous optical transients even beyond a redshift of unity. In addition, the final 6-year co-added images, anticipated to reach g=25.8 mag in WFS or 1.5 mags deeper in DHS, will be of fundamental importance to general Galactic and extragalactic science. The highly uniform legacy surveys of WFST will serve as an indispensable complement to those of LSST that monitor the southern sky.

Transport of nonlinear oscillations along rays that graze a convex obstacle to any order

We provide a geometric optics description in spaces of low regularity, $L^2$ and $H^1$, of the transport of oscillations in solutions to linear and some semilinear second-order hyperbolic boundary problems along rays that graze the boundary of a convex obstacle to arbitrarily high finite or infinite order. The fundamental motivating example is the case where the spacetime manifold is $M=(\mathbb{R}^n\setminus \mathcal{O})\times \mathbb{R}_t$, where $\mathcal{O}\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open convex obstacle with $C^\infty$ boundary, and the governing hyperbolic operator is the wave operator $\Box:=Δ-\partial_t^2$.

Mathematics of internal waves in a 2D aquarium

Following theoretical and experimental work of Maas et al we consider a linearized model for internal waves in effectively two dimensional aquaria. We provide a precise description of singular profiles appearing in long time wave evolution and associate them to classical attractors. That is done by microlocal analysis of the spectral Poincaré problem, leading in particular to a limiting absorption principle. Some aspects of the paper (for instance Section 6) can be considered as a natural microlocal continuation of the work of John on the Dirichlet problem for hyperbolic equations in two dimensions.

Analytic result for the top-quark width at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

We present the first full analytic results of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the top-quark decay width $Γ(t\to Wb)$ by calculating the imaginary part of three-loop top-quark self-energy diagrams. The results are all expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms and valid in the whole region $0\le m_W^2\le m_t^2$. The expansions in the $m_W^2\to 0$ and $m_W^2\to m_t^2$ limits coincide with previous studies. Our results can also be taken as the exact prediction for the lepton invariant mass spectrum in semileptonic $b\to u$ decays. We also analytically compute the decay width including the off-shell $W$ boson effect up to NNLO in QCD for the first time. Combining these contributions with electroweak corrections and the finite $b$-quark mass effect, we determine the most precise top-quark width to be 1.331 GeV for $m_t=172.69$ GeV. The total theoretical uncertainties including those from renormalization scale choice, top-quark renormalization scheme, input parameters, and missing higher-order corrections are scrutinized and found to be less than $1\%$.

Unified Pre-training with Pseudo Texts for Text-To-Image Person Re-identification

The pre-training task is indispensable for the text-to-image person re-identification (T2I-ReID) task. However, there are two underlying inconsistencies between these two tasks that may impact the performance; i) Data inconsistency. A large domain gap exists between the generic images/texts used in public pre-trained models and the specific person data in the T2I-ReID task. This gap is especially severe for texts, as general textual data are usually unable to describe specific people in fine-grained detail. ii) Training inconsistency. The processes of pre-training of images and texts are independent, despite cross-modality learning being critical to T2I-ReID. To address the above issues, we present a new unified pre-training pipeline (UniPT) designed specifically for the T2I-ReID task. We first build a large-scale text-labeled person dataset "LUPerson-T", in which pseudo-textual descriptions of images are automatically generated by the CLIP paradigm using a divide-conquer-combine strategy. Benefiting from this dataset, we then utilize a simple vision-and-language pre-training framework to explicitly align the feature space of the image and text modalities during pre-training. In this way, the pre-training task and the T2I-ReID task are made consistent with each other on both data and training levels. Without the need for any bells and whistles, our UniPT achieves competitive Rank-1 accuracy of, ie, 68.50%, 60.09%, and 51.85% on CUHK-PEDES, ICFG-PEDES and RSTPReid, respectively. Both the LUPerson-T dataset and code are available at https;//github.com/ZhiyinShao-H/UniPT.

Exponential ergodicity of branching processes with immigration and competition

We study the ergodic property of a continuous-state branching process with immigration and competition. The exponential ergodicity in a weighted total variation distance is proved under natural assumptions. The main theorem applies to subcritical, critical and supercritical branching mechanisms, including all those of stable types. The proof is based on the construction of a Markov coupling process and the choice of a nonsymmetric control function for the distance. Those are designed to identify and to take the advantage of the dominating factor from the branching, immigration and competition mechanisms in different parts of the state space. The approach provides a way of finding a lower bound of the ergodicity rate.

Analytic three-loop QCD corrections to top-quark and semileptonic $b\to u$ decays

We present the first analytic results of N$^3$LO QCD corrections to the top-quark decay width. We focus on the dominant leading color contribution, which includes light-quark loops. At NNLO, this dominant contribution accounts for 95% of the total correction. By utilizing the optical theorem, the N$^3$LO corrections are related to the imaginary parts of the four-loop self-energy Feynman diagrams, which are calculated with differential equations. The results are expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms, enabling fast and accurate evaluation. The third-order QCD corrections decrease the LO decay width by 0.667%, and the scale uncertainty is reduced by half compared to the NNLO result. The most precise prediction for the top-quark width is now 1.321 GeV for $m_t=172.69$ GeV. Additionally, we obtain the third-order QCD corrections to the dilepton invariant mass spectrum and decay width in the semileptonic $b\to u$ transition.

Group DETR: Fast DETR Training with Group-Wise One-to-Many Assignment

Detection transformer (DETR) relies on one-to-one assignment, assigning one ground-truth object to one prediction, for end-to-end detection without NMS post-processing. It is known that one-to-many assignment, assigning one ground-truth object to multiple predictions, succeeds in detection methods such as Faster R-CNN and FCOS. While the naive one-to-many assignment does not work for DETR, and it remains challenging to apply one-to-many assignment for DETR training. In this paper, we introduce Group DETR, a simple yet efficient DETR training approach that introduces a group-wise way for one-to-many assignment. This approach involves using multiple groups of object queries, conducting one-to-one assignment within each group, and performing decoder self-attention separately. It resembles data augmentation with automatically-learned object query augmentation. It is also equivalent to simultaneously training parameter-sharing networks of the same architecture, introducing more supervision and thus improving DETR training. The inference process is the same as DETR trained normally and only needs one group of queries without any architecture modification. Group DETR is versatile and is applicable to various DETR variants. The experiments show that Group DETR significantly speeds up the training convergence and improves the performance of various DETR-based models. Code will be available at \url{https://github.com/Atten4Vis/GroupDETR}.

Quasi-stationary distribution for continuous-state branching processes with competition

We study quasi-stationary distribution of the continuous-state branching process with competition introduced in Berestycki, Fittipaldi and Fontbona\ (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields, 2018). This process is constructed as the unique strong solution to a stochastic integral equation with jumps. An important example is the logistic branching process constructed in Lambert (Ann. Appl. Probab., 2005). We establish the strong Feller property, trajectory Feller property, Lyapunov condition, weak Feller property and irreducibility, respectively. These properties together allow us to prove that when the competition term is strong enough near $+\infty$, then there is a unique quasi-stationary distribution, which attracts all initial distributions with exponential rates.

Ferromagnetic and insulating behavior in both half magnetic levitation and non-levitation LK-99 like samples

Finding materials exhibiting superconductivity at room temperature has long been one of the ultimate goals in physics and material science. Recently, room-temperature superconducting properties have been claimed in a copper substituted lead phosphate apatite (Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O, or called LK-99) [1-3]. Using a similar approach, we have prepared LK-99 like samples and confirmed the half-levitation behaviors in some small specimens under the influence of a magnet at room temperature. To examine the magnetic properties of our samples, we have performed systematic magnetization measurements on the as-grown LK-99-like samples, including the half-levitated and non-levitated samples. The magnetization measurements show the coexistence of soft-ferromagnetic and diamagnetic signals in both half-levitated and non-levitated samples. The electrical transport measurements on the as-grown LK-99-like samples including both half-levitated and non-levitated samples show an insulating behavior characterized by the increasing resistivity with the decreasing temperature.
