Fast and wide-band tuning single-mode microlaser based on fiber Fabry-Pérot microcavities

A narrow linewidth laser operating at the telecommunications band combined with both fast and wide-band tuning features will have promising applications. Here, we demonstrate a single-mode (both transverse and longitude mode) continuous microlaser around 1535 nm based on a fiber Fabry-Pérot microcavity, which achieves wide-band tuning without mode hopping to 1.3 THz range and fast tuning rate to 60 kHz, yields a frequency scan rate of $1.6\times10^{17}$ Hz/s. Moreover, the linewidth of the laser is measured as narrow as 3.1 MHz. As the microlaser combines all these features into one fiber component, it can serve as the seed laser for versatile applications in optical communication, sensing, frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar and high resolution imaging.

Graph-PCNN: Two Stage Human Pose Estimation with Graph Pose Refinement

Recently, most of the state-of-the-art human pose estimation methods are based on heatmap regression. The final coordinates of keypoints are obtained by decoding heatmap directly. In this paper, we aim to find a better approach to get more accurate localization results. We mainly put forward two suggestions for improvement: 1) different features and methods should be applied for rough and accurate localization, 2) relationship between keypoints should be considered. Specifically, we propose a two-stage graph-based and model-agnostic framework, called Graph-PCNN, with a localization subnet and a graph pose refinement module added onto the original heatmap regression network. In the first stage, heatmap regression network is applied to obtain a rough localization result, and a set of proposal keypoints, called guided points, are sampled. In the second stage, for each guided point, different visual feature is extracted by the localization subnet. The relationship between guided points is explored by the graph pose refinement module to get more accurate localization results. Experiments show that Graph-PCNN can be used in various backbones to boost the performance by a large margin. Without bells and whistles, our best model can achieve a new state-of-the-art 76.8% AP on COCO test-dev split.

FakeSpotter: A Simple yet Robust Baseline for Spotting AI-Synthesized Fake Faces

In recent years, generative adversarial networks (GANs) and its variants have achieved unprecedented success in image synthesis. They are widely adopted in synthesizing facial images which brings potential security concerns to humans as the fakes spread and fuel the misinformation. However, robust detectors of these AI-synthesized fake faces are still in their infancy and are not ready to fully tackle this emerging challenge. In this work, we propose a novel approach, named FakeSpotter, based on monitoring neuron behaviors to spot AI-synthesized fake faces. The studies on neuron coverage and interactions have successfully shown that they can be served as testing criteria for deep learning systems, especially under the settings of being exposed to adversarial attacks. Here, we conjecture that monitoring neuron behavior can also serve as an asset in detecting fake faces since layer-by-layer neuron activation patterns may capture more subtle features that are important for the fake detector. Experimental results on detecting four types of fake faces synthesized with the state-of-the-art GANs and evading four perturbation attacks show the effectiveness and robustness of our approach.

Unconventional Hall Effect induced by Berry Curvature

Berry phase and Berry curvature play a key role in the development of topology in physics and do contribute to the transport properties in solid state systems. In this paper, we report the finding of novel nonzero Hall effect in topological material ZrTe5 flakes when in-plane magnetic field is parallel and perpendicular to the current. Surprisingly, both symmetric and antisymmetric components with respect to magnetic field are detected in the in-plane Hall resistivity. Further theoretical analysis suggests that the magnetotransport properties originate from the anomalous velocity induced by Berry curvature in a tilted Weyl semimetal. Our work not only enriches the Hall family but also provides new insights into the Berry phase effect in topological materials.

Periodic homogenization of non-symmetric Lévy-type processes

In this paper, we study homogenization problem for strong Markov processes on $\R^d$ having infinitesimal generators $$ \sL f(x)=\int_{\R^d}\left(f(x+z)-f(x)-\langle \nabla f(x), z\rangle \I_{\{|z|\le 1\}} \right) k(x,z)\, Π(dz) +\langle b(x), \nabla f(x) \rangle, \quad f\in C^2_b (\R^d) $$ in periodic media, where $Π$ is a non-negative measure on $\R^d$ that does not charge the origin $0$, satisfies $\int_{\R^d} (1 \wedge |z|^2)\, Π(dz)<\infty$, and can be singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure on $\R^d$. Under a proper scaling, we show the scaled processes converge weakly to Lévy processes on $\R^d$. The results are a counterpart of the celebrated work \cite{BLP,Bh} in the jump-diffusion setting. In particular, we completely characterize the homogenized limiting processes when $b(x) $ is a bounded continuous multivariate 1-periodic $\R^d$-valued function, $k(x,z)$ is a non-negative bounded continuous function that is multivariate 1-periodic in both $x$ and $z$ variables, and, in spherical coordinate $z=(r, θ) \in \R_+\times \bS^{d-1}$, $$ \I_{\{|z|>1\}}\,Π(dz) = \I_{\{ r>1\}} \varrho_0(dθ) \, \frac{ dr }{r^{1+α}} $$ with $α\in (0,\infty)$ and $\varrho_0$ being any finite measure on the unit sphere $\bS^{d-1}$ in $\R^d$. Different phenomena occur depending on the values of $α$; there are five cases: $α\in (0, 1)$, $α=1$, $α\in (1, 2)$, $α=2$ and $α\in (2, \infty)$.

Approximation of heavy-tailed distributions via stable-driven SDEs

Constructions of numerous approximate sampling algorithms are based on the well-known fact that certain Gibbs measures are stationary distributions of ergodic stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by the Brownian motion. However, for some heavy-tailed distributions it can be shown that the associated SDE is not exponentially ergodic and that related sampling algorithms may perform poorly. A natural idea that has recently been explored in the machine learning literature in this context is to make use of stochastic processes with heavy tails instead of the Brownian motion. In this paper we provide a rigorous theoretical framework for studying the problem of approximating heavy-tailed distributions via ergodic SDEs driven by symmetric (rotationally invariant) $α$-stable processes.

Type-II Ising superconductivity and anomalous metallic state in macro-size ambient-stable ultrathin crystalline films

Recent emergence of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline superconductors has provided a promising platform to investigate novel quantum physics and potential applications. To reveal essential quantum phenomena therein, ultralow temperature transport investigation on high quality ultrathin superconducting films is critically required, although it has been quite challenging experimentally. Here we report a systematic transport study on the ultrathin crystalline PdTe2 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Interestingly, a new type of Ising superconductivity in 2D centrosymmetric materials is revealed by the detection of large in-plane critical field more than 7 times Pauli limit. Remarkably, in perpendicular magnetic field, we provide solid evidence of anomalous metallic state characterized by the resistance saturation at low temperatures with high quality filters. The robust superconductivity with intriguing quantum phenomena in the macro-size ambient-stable ultrathin PdTe2 films remains almost the same for 20 months, showing great potentials in electronic and spintronic applications.

Eightfold Fermionic Excitation in a Charge Density Wave Compound

Unconventional quasiparticle excitations in condensed matter systems have become one of the most important research frontiers. Beyond two- and fourfold degenerate Weyl and Dirac fermions, three-, six- and eightfold symmetry protected degeneracies have been predicted however remain challenging to realize in solid state materials. Here, charge density wave compound TaTe4 is proposed to hold eightfold fermionic excitation and Dirac point in energy bands. High quality TaTe4 single crystals are prepared, where the charge density wave is revealed by directly imaging the atomic structure and a pseudogap of about 45 meV on the surface. Shubnikov de-Haas oscillations of TaTe4 are consistent with band structure calculation. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals atomic step edge states on the surface of TaTe4. This work uncovers that charge density wave is able to induce new topological phases and sheds new light on the novel excitations in condensed matter materials.

A semi-analytical model for the scale-dependent friction of nanosized asperity

The friction of a nanosized sphere in commensurate contact with a flat substrate is investigated by performing molecular dynamics simulations. Particular focus is on the distribution of shear stress within the contact region. It is noticed that within the slip zone, the local friction coefficient defined by the ratio of shear stress to normal pressure declines monotonically as the distance to contact center increases. With the lateral force increasing, the slip zone expands inwards from the contact edge. At the same time, the local friction coefficient at the contact edge decreases continuously, while at the dividing between the slip and stick zones keeps nearly invariant. These characteristics are distinctly different from the prediction of the conventional Cattaneo-Mindlin model assuming a constant local friction coefficient within the slip zone. An analytical model is advanced in view of such new features and generalized based on numerous atomic simulations. This model not only accurately characterizes the interfacial shear stress, but also explains the size-dependence of static friction of single nanosized asperity.

Periodic Homogenization of a Lévy-Type Process with Small Jumps

In this article, we consider the problem of periodic homogenization of a Feller process generated by a pseudo-differential operator, the so-called Lévy-type process. Under the assumptions that the generator has rapidly periodically oscillating coefficients, and that it admits "small jumps" only (that is, the jump kernel has finite second moment), we prove that the appropriately centered and scaled process converges weakly to a Brownian motion with covariance matrix given in terms of the coefficients of the generator. The presented results generalize the classical and well-known results related to periodic homogenization of a diffusion process.

Dynamics of resonances for 0th order pseudodifferential operators

We study the dynamics of resonances of analytic perturbations of 0th order pseudodifferential operators $P(s)$. In particular, we prove a Fermi golden rule for resonances of $P(s)$ at embedded eigenvalues of $P=P(0)$. We also study the dynamics of eigenvalues of $P(t)=P+itΔ$ as the eigenvalues converge to simple eigenvalues of $P$. The 0th order pseudodifferential operators we consider satisfy natural dynamical assumptions and are used as microlocal models of internal waves.

Stability of parabolic Harnack inequalities for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms

In this paper, we establish stability of parabolic Harnack inequalities for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms on metric measure spaces under general volume doubling condition. We obtain their stable equivalent characterizations in terms of the jumping kernels, variants of cutoff Sobolev inequalities, and Poincaré inequalities. In particular, we establish the connection between parabolic Harnack inequalities and two-sided heat kernel estimates, as well as with the Hölder regularity of parabolic functions for symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms.

Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Topological Semimetal Candidate NdSbTe

ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS-family, LnSbTe (Ln = Lanthanide rare earth) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln. Here we report the single crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored LnSbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known LnSbTe, but exhibits distinct enhanced electronic correlations characterized by large a Sommerfeld coefficient of 115 mJ/mol $K^2$, which is the highest among the known LnSbTe compounds. Furthermore, our transport studies have revealed the coupling with magnetism and signatures of Kondo localization. All these findings establish NdSbTe as a new platform for observing novel phenomena arising from the interplay between magnetism, topology, and electron correlations.

Approaching the limits of optoelectronic performance in mixed cation mixed halide perovskites by controlling surface recombination

We demonstrate the critical role of surface recombination in mixed-cation, mixed-halide perovskite, FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3. By passivating non-radiative defects with the polymerizable Lewis base (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) we transform these thin films. We demonstrate average minority carrier lifetimes > 4 μs, nearly single exponential monomolecular PL decays, and concomitantly high external photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (>20%, corresponding to ~97% of the maximum theoretical quasi-Fermi-level splitting) at low excitation fluence. We confirm both the composition and valence band edge position of the FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 perovskite using multi-institution, cross-validated, XPS and UPS measurements. We extend the APTMS surface passivation to higher bandgap double cation (FA,Cs) compositions (1.7 eV, 1.75 eV and 1.8 eV) as well as the widely used triple cation (FA,MA,Cs) composition and observe significant PL and PL lifetime improvements after surface passivation. Finally, we demonstrate that the average surface recombination velocity (SRV) decreases from ~1000 cm/s to ~10 cm/s post APTMS passivation for FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3. Our results demonstrate that surface-mediated recombination is the primary non-radiative loss pathway in MA-free mixed-cation mixed-halide films with a range of different bandgaps, which is a problem observed for a wide range of perovskite active layers and reactive electrical contacts. This study indicates that surface passivation and contact engineering will enable near-theoretical device efficiencies with these materials.

Game Theoretic Approaches in Vehicular Networks: A Survey

In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), vehicles and other intelligent components in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) are connected, forming the Vehicular Networks (VNs) that provide efficient and secure traffic, ubiquitous access to information, and various applications. However, as the number of connected nodes keeps increasing, it is challenging to satisfy various and large amounts of service requests with different Quality of Service (QoS ) and security requirements in the highly dynamic VNs. Intelligent nodes in VNs can compete or cooperate for limited network resources so that either an individual or group objectives can be achieved. Game theory, a theoretical framework designed for strategic interactions among rational decision-makers who faced with scarce resources, can be used to model and analyze individual or group behaviors of communication entities in VNs. This paper primarily surveys the recent advantages of GT used in solving various challenges in VNs. As VNs and GT have been extensively investigate34d, this survey starts with a brief introduction of the basic concept and classification of GT used in VNs. Then, a comprehensive review of applications of GT in VNs is presented, which primarily covers the aspects of QoS and security. Moreover, with the development of fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication, recent contributions of GT to diverse emerging technologies of 5G integrated into VNs are surveyed in this paper. Finally, several key research challenges and possible solutions for applying GT in VNs are outlined.

Cross-Lingual Low-Resource Set-to-Description Retrieval for Global E-Commerce

With the prosperous of cross-border e-commerce, there is an urgent demand for designing intelligent approaches for assisting e-commerce sellers to offer local products for consumers from all over the world. In this paper, we explore a new task of cross-lingual information retrieval, i.e., cross-lingual set-to-description retrieval in cross-border e-commerce, which involves matching product attribute sets in the source language with persuasive product descriptions in the target language. We manually collect a new and high-quality paired dataset, where each pair contains an unordered product attribute set in the source language and an informative product description in the target language. As the dataset construction process is both time-consuming and costly, the new dataset only comprises of 13.5k pairs, which is a low-resource setting and can be viewed as a challenging testbed for model development and evaluation in cross-border e-commerce. To tackle this cross-lingual set-to-description retrieval task, we propose a novel cross-lingual matching network (CLMN) with the enhancement of context-dependent cross-lingual mapping upon the pre-trained monolingual BERT representations. Experimental results indicate that our proposed CLMN yields impressive results on the challenging task and the context-dependent cross-lingual mapping on BERT yields noticeable improvement over the pre-trained multi-lingual BERT model.

Compactness of semigroups generated by symmetric non-local Dirichlet forms with unbounded coefficients

Let $(\E,\F)$ be a symmetric non-local Dirichlet from with unbounded coefficient on $L^2(\R^d;\d x)$ defined by $$\E(f,g)=\iint_{\R^d\times \R^d} (f(y)-f(x))(g(x)-g(y)){W(x,y)}\, J(x,\d y)\,\d x, \quad f,g\in \F,$$ where $J(x,\d y)$ is regarded as the jumping kernel for a pure-jump symmetric Lévy-type process with bounded coefficients, and $W(x,y)$ is seen as a weighted (unbounded) function. We establish sharp criteria for compactness and non-compactness of the associated Markovian semigroup $(P_t)_{t\ge0}$ on $L^2(\R^d;\d x)$. In particular, we prove that if $J(x,\d y)=|x-y|^{-d-α}\,\d y$ with $α\in (0,2)$, and $$W(x,y)= \begin{cases} (1+|x|)^p+(1+|y|)^p, \ & |x-y|< 1 \\ (1+|x|)^q+(1+|y|)^q, \ & |x-y|\geq 1 \end{cases}$$ with $p\in [0,\infty)$ and $q\in [0,α)$, then $(P_t)_{t\ge0}$ is compact, if and only if $p>2$. This indicates that the compactness of $(\E,\F)$ heavily depends on the growth of the weighted function $W(x,y)$ only for $|x-y|<1$. Our approach is based on establishing the essential super Poincaré inequality for $(\E,\F)$. Our general results work even if the jumping kernel $J(x,\d y)$ is degenerate or is singular with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
