Waiting Time Distribution of Quantum Electronic Transport in Transient Regime

Waiting time is an important transport quantity that is complementary to average current and its fluctuation. So far all the studies of waiting time distribution (WTD) are limited to steady state transport (either dc or ac). In this work, we present a theory to calculate WTD for coherent electronic systems in transient regime. We express the generating function of full counting statistics using Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's functions formalism. Our analysis goes beyond the wideband approximation and is suitable for first principles calculation on realistic systems. Analytic solution has been obtained for short and long time behaviors of waiting times. At short times, the WTD shows a linear dependence on the waiting time while in the long time limit, WTD follows Poisson distribution. We have applied this theory to a quantum dot connected by two leads and calculated cumulants of transferred charge as well as WTD in the transient regime. We have demonstrated how to relate WTD to experimental measured data.

A Kastler-Kalau-Walze Type Theorem for 5-dimensional Manifolds with Boundary

The Kastler-Kalau-Walze theorem, announced by Alain Connes, shows that the Wodzicki residue of the inverse square of the Dirac operator is proportional to the Einstein-Hilbert action of general relativity. In this paper, we prove a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for 5-dimensional manifolds with boundary.

High temperature superconducting FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates

Interface enhanced superconductivity at two dimensional limit has become one of most intriguing research directions in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the superconducting properties of ultra-thin FeSe films with the thickness of one unit cell (1-UC) grown on conductive and insulating SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. For the 1-UC FeSe on conductive STO substrate (Nb-STO), the magnetization versus temperature (M-T) measurement shows a diamagnetic signal at 85 K, suggesting the possibility of superconductivity appears at this high temperature. For the FeSe films on insulating STO substrate, systematic transport measurements were carried out and the sheet resistance of FeSe films exhibits Arrhenius TAFF behavior with a crossover from a single-vortex pinning region to a collective creep region. More intriguing, sign reversal of Hall resistance with temperature is observed, demonstrating a crossover from hole conduction to electron conduction above Tc in 1-UC FeSe films.

Harnack Inequalities for SDEs with Multiplicative Noise and Non-regular Drift

The log-Harnack inequality and Harnack inequality with powers for semigroups associated to SDEs with non-degenerate diffusion coefficient and non-regular time-dependent drift coefficient are established, based on the recent papers \cite{Flandoli, Zhang11}. We consider two cases in this work: (1) the drift fulfills the LPS-type integrability, and (2) the drift is uniformly Hölder continuous with respect to the spatial variable. Finally, by using explicit heat kernel estimates for the stable process with drift, the Harnack inequality for the stochastic differential equation driven by symmetric stable process is also proved.

Rapidly reconfigurable radio-frequency arbitrary waveforms synthesized on a CMOS photonic chip

Photonic methods of radio-frequency waveform generation and processing provide performance and flexibility over electronic methods due to the ultrawide bandwidth offered by the optical carriers. However, they suffer from lack of integration and slow reconfiguration speed. Here we propose an architecture of integrated photonic RF waveform generation and processing, and implement it on a silicon chip fabricated in a semiconductor manufacturing foundry. Our device can generate programmable RF bursts or continuous waveforms with only the light source, electrical drives/controls and detectors being off chip. It turns on and off an individual pulse in the RF burst within 4 nanoseconds, achieving a reconfiguration speed three orders of magnitude faster than thermal tuning. The on-chip optical delay elements offers an integrated approach to accurately manipulate individual RF waveform features without constrains set by the speed and timing jitter of electronics, and should find broad applications ranging from high-speed wireless to defense electronics.

Twisted Dirac Operators and the Noncommutative Residue for Manifolds with Boundary

In this paper, we give two Lichnerowicz type formulas for Dirac operators and signature operators twisted by a vector bundle with a non-unitary connection. We also prove two Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorems for twisted Dirac operators and twisted signature operators on 4-dimensional manifolds with (resp. without) boundary.

Uniform Hölder Estimates on Semigroups Generated by Non-Local Operators of Variable Order

We consider the non-local operator of variable order as follows $$Lf(x)= \int_{\R^d\setminus\{0\}}\big(f(x+z)-f(x)-\<\nabla f(x),z\> \I_{\{|z|\le 1\}}\big)\frac{n(x,z)}{|z|^{d+α(x)}}\,dz.$$ Under mild conditions on $α(x)$ and $n(x,z)$, we establish the Hölder regularity for the associated semigroups. The proof is based on the probabilistic coupling method, and it successfully applies to both stable-like processes in the sense of Bass and time-change of symmetric stable processes.

Generalized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit

As a greedy algorithm to recover sparse signals from compressed measurements, orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm has received much attention in recent years. In this paper, we introduce an extension of the OMP for pursuing efficiency in reconstructing sparse signals. Our approach, henceforth referred to as generalized OMP (gOMP), is literally a generalization of the OMP in the sense that multiple $N$ indices are identified per iteration. Owing to the selection of multiple ''correct'' indices, the gOMP algorithm is finished with much smaller number of iterations when compared to the OMP. We show that the gOMP can perfectly reconstruct any $K$-sparse signals ($K > 1$), provided that the sensing matrix satisfies the RIP with $δ_{NK} < \frac{\sqrt{N}}{\sqrt{K} + 3 \sqrt{N}}$. We also demonstrate by empirical simulations that the gOMP has excellent recovery performance comparable to $\ell_1$-minimization technique with fast processing speed and competitive computational complexity.

Multipath Matching Pursuit

In this paper, we propose an algorithm referred to as multipath matching pursuit that investigates multiple promising candidates to recover sparse signals from compressed measurements. Our method is inspired by the fact that the problem to find the candidate that minimizes the residual is readily modeled as a combinatoric tree search problem and the greedy search strategy is a good fit for solving this problem. In the empirical results as well as the restricted isometry property (RIP) based performance guarantee, we show that the proposed MMP algorithm is effective in reconstructing original sparse signals for both noiseless and noisy scenarios.

Diboson Production at LHC and Tevatron

This is a report at the conference Physics in Collision 2013. The experimental results on physics of diboson production are reviewed. The measurements use $pp$ collision at the LHC with center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 and 8 ~TeV, and $p\bar{p}$ collision at the Tevatron with $\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96~TeV. These include measurements of W$γ$, Z$γ$, WW, WZ and ZZ production. The results are compared with Standard Model predictions, and are interpreted in terms of constraints on charged and neutral anomalous triple gauge couplings.

Some notes on Gorenstein projective modules

Let $R$ be a ring. It is proved that $(\mathcal{GP}(R), \mathcal{GP}(R)^\bot)$ is a complete hereditary cotorsion pair, where $\mathcal{GP}(R)$ denotes the class of the Gorenstein projective left $R$-modules. Then we get that each left $R$-module has a special Gorenstein projective precover. As an application, we prove that all Gorenstein projective left $R$-modules are Gorenstein flat over left noetherian rings.

Practical and fast quantum random number generation based on photon arrival time relative to external reference

We present a practical high-speed quantum random number generator, where the timing of single-photon detection relative to an external time reference is measured as the raw data. The bias of the raw data can be substantially reduced compared with the previous realizations. The raw random bit rate of our generator can reach 109 Mbps. We develop a model for the generator and evaluate the min-entropy of the raw data. Toeplitz matrix hashing is applied for randomness extraction, after which the final random bits are able to pass the standard randomness tests.

Ergodicity for Time Changed Symmetric Stable Processes

In this paper we study the ergodicity and the related semigroup property for a class of symmetric Markov jump processes associated with time changed symmetric $α$-stable processes. For this purpose, explicit and sharp criteria for Poincaré type inequalities (including Poincaré, super Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities) of the corresponding non-local Dirichlet forms are derived. Moreover, our main results, when applied to a class of one-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by symmetric $α$-stable processes, yield sharp criteria for their various ergodic properties and corresponding functional inequalities.

Measurement-based Quantum Computation Under Different Types of Noises

Measurement based quantum computation (MBQC) is an effective paradigm for universal quantum computation. In this scheme, the universal set of quantum gates are realized by only local measurements on the prior prepared cluster states. The inevitable decoherence is harmful to the realization of those quantum gates. Here, we investigate the performance of the quantum gates exposed to different type of noises. We find that some errors may not influence the success of the quantum gates, in contrast, some others may destroy their realization. We show that there is a controlling pattern that can protect quantum gates from certain types of noises and thus can improve the success probability of the gates implementation.

Direct observation of high temperature superconductivity in one-unit-cell FeSe films

Heterostructure based interface engineering has been proved an effective method for finding new superconducting systems and raising superconductivity transition temperature (TC). In previous work on one unit-cell (UC) thick FeSe films on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate, a superconducting-like energy gap as large as 20 meV, was revealed by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) further revealed a nearly isotropic gap of above 15 meV, which closes at a temperature of ~ 65 K. If this transition is indeed the superconducting transition, then the 1-UC FeSe represents the thinnest high TC superconductor discovered so far. However, up to date direct transport measurement of the 1-UC FeSe films has not been reported, mainly because growth of large scale 1-UC FeSe films is challenging and the 1-UC FeSe films are too thin to survive in atmosphere. In this work, we successfully prepared 1-UC FeSe films on insulating STO substrates with non-superconducting FeTe protection layers. By direct transport and magnetic measurements, we provide definitive evidence for high temperature superconductivity in the 1-UC FeSe films with an onset TC above 40 K and a extremely large critical current density JC ~ 1.7*106 A/cm2 at 2 K. Our work may pave the way to enhancing and tailoring superconductivity by interface engineering.
