Femtosecond rotational dynamics of D$_2$ molecules in superfluid helium nanodroplets

Rotational dynamics of D$_2$ molecules inside helium nanodroplets is induced by a moderately intense femtosecond (fs) pump pulse and measured as a function of time by recording the yield of HeD$^+$ ions, created through strong-field dissociative ionization with a delayed fs probe pulse. The yield oscillates with a period of 185 fs, reflecting field-free rotational wave packet dynamics, and the oscillation persists for more than 500 periods. Within the experimental uncertainty, the rotational constant BHe of the in-droplet D$_2$ molecule, determined by Fourier analysis, is the same as Bgas for an isolated D$_2$ molecule. Our observations show that the D$_2$ molecules inside helium nanodroplets essentially rotate as free D$_2$ molecules.

D-Former: A U-shaped Dilated Transformer for 3D Medical Image Segmentation

Computer-aided medical image segmentation has been applied widely in diagnosis and treatment to obtain clinically useful information of shapes and volumes of target organs and tissues. In the past several years, convolutional neural network (CNN) based methods (e.g., U-Net) have dominated this area, but still suffered from inadequate long-range information capturing. Hence, recent work presented computer vision Transformer variants for medical image segmentation tasks and obtained promising performances. Such Transformers model long-range dependency by computing pair-wise patch relations. However, they incur prohibitive computational costs, especially on 3D medical images (e.g., CT and MRI). In this paper, we propose a new method called Dilated Transformer, which conducts self-attention for pair-wise patch relations captured alternately in local and global scopes. Inspired by dilated convolution kernels, we conduct the global self-attention in a dilated manner, enlarging receptive fields without increasing the patches involved and thus reducing computational costs. Based on this design of Dilated Transformer, we construct a U-shaped encoder-decoder hierarchical architecture called D-Former for 3D medical image segmentation. Experiments on the Synapse and ACDC datasets show that our D-Former model, trained from scratch, outperforms various competitive CNN-based or Transformer-based segmentation models at a low computational cost without time-consuming per-training process.

AGMI: Attention-Guided Multi-omics Integration for Drug Response Prediction with Graph Neural Networks

Accurate drug response prediction (DRP) is a crucial yet challenging task in precision medicine. This paper presents a novel Attention-Guided Multi-omics Integration (AGMI) approach for DRP, which first constructs a Multi-edge Graph (MeG) for each cell line, and then aggregates multi-omics features to predict drug response using a novel structure, called Graph edge-aware Network (GeNet). For the first time, our AGMI approach explores gene constraint based multi-omics integration for DRP with the whole-genome using GNNs. Empirical experiments on the CCLE and GDSC datasets show that our AGMI largely outperforms state-of-the-art DRP methods by 8.3%--34.2% on four metrics. Our data and code are available at https://github.com/yivan-WYYGDSG/AGMI.

The accelerating development of autonomous driving technology has placed greater demands on obtaining large amounts of high-quality data. Representative, labeled, real world data serves as the fuel for training deep learning networks, critical for improving self-driving perception algorithms. In this paper, we introduce PandaSet, the first dataset produced by a complete, high-precision autonomous vehicle sensor kit with a no-cost commercial license. The dataset was collected using one 360° mechanical spinning LiDAR, one forward-facing, long-range LiDAR, and 6 cameras. The dataset contains more than 100 scenes, each of which is 8 seconds long, and provides 28 types of labels for object classification and 37 types of labels for semantic segmentation. We provide baselines for LiDAR-only 3D object detection, LiDAR-camera fusion 3D object detection and LiDAR point cloud segmentation. For more details about PandaSet and the development kit, see https://scale.com/open-datasets/pandaset.

Continuous Speech Separation with Recurrent Selective Attention Network

While permutation invariant training (PIT) based continuous speech separation (CSS) significantly improves the conversation transcription accuracy, it often suffers from speech leakages and failures in separation at "hot spot" regions because it has a fixed number of output channels. In this paper, we propose to apply recurrent selective attention network (RSAN) to CSS, which generates a variable number of output channels based on active speaker counting. In addition, we propose a novel block-wise dependency extension of RSAN by introducing dependencies between adjacent processing blocks in the CSS framework. It enables the network to utilize the separation results from the previous blocks to facilitate the current block processing. Experimental results on the LibriCSS dataset show that the RSAN-based CSS (RSAN-CSS) network consistently improves the speech recognition accuracy over PIT-based models. The proposed block-wise dependency modeling further boosts the performance of RSAN-CSS.

CenterNet3D: An Anchor Free Object Detector for Point Cloud

Accurate and fast 3D object detection from point clouds is a key task in autonomous driving. Existing one-stage 3D object detection methods can achieve real-time performance, however, they are dominated by anchor-based detectors which are inefficient and require additional post-processing. In this paper, we eliminate anchors and model an object as a single point--the center point of its bounding box. Based on the center point, we propose an anchor-free CenterNet3D network that performs 3D object detection without anchors. Our CenterNet3D uses keypoint estimation to find center points and directly regresses 3D bounding boxes. However, because inherent sparsity of point clouds, 3D object center points are likely to be in empty space which makes it difficult to estimate accurate boundaries. To solve this issue, we propose an extra corner attention module to enforce the CNN backbone to pay more attention to object boundaries. Besides, considering that one-stage detectors suffer from the discordance between the predicted bounding boxes and corresponding classification confidences, we develop an efficient keypoint-sensitive warping operation to align the confidences to the predicted bounding boxes. Our proposed CenterNet3D is non-maximum suppression free which makes it more efficient and simpler. We evaluate CenterNet3D on the widely used KITTI dataset and more challenging nuScenes dataset. Our method outperforms all state-of-the-art anchor-based one-stage methods and has comparable performance to two-stage methods as well. It has an inference speed of 20 FPS and achieves the best speed and accuracy trade-off. Our source code will be released at https://github.com/wangguojun2018/CenterNet3d.

Predicting the Reproducibility of Social and Behavioral Science Papers Using Supervised Learning Models

In recent years, significant effort has been invested verifying the reproducibility and robustness of research claims in social and behavioral sciences (SBS), much of which has involved resource-intensive replication projects. In this paper, we investigate prediction of the reproducibility of SBS papers using machine learning methods based on a set of features. We propose a framework that extracts five types of features from scholarly work that can be used to support assessments of reproducibility of published research claims. Bibliometric features, venue features, and author features are collected from public APIs or extracted using open source machine learning libraries with customized parsers. Statistical features, such as p-values, are extracted by recognizing patterns in the body text. Semantic features, such as funding information, are obtained from public APIs or are extracted using natural language processing models. We analyze pairwise correlations between individual features and their importance for predicting a set of human-assessed ground truth labels. In doing so, we identify a subset of 9 top features that play relatively more important roles in predicting the reproducibility of SBS papers in our corpus. Results are verified by comparing performances of 10 supervised predictive classifiers trained on different sets of features.

Photoluminescence switching in a two-dimensional atomic crystal

Two-dimensional materials are an emerging class of new materials with a wide range of electrical and optical properties and potential applications. Single-layer structures of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides are gaining increasing attention for use in field-effect transistors. Here, we report a photoluminescence switching effect based on single-layer WSe2 transistors. Dual gates are used to tune the photoluminescence intensity. In particular, a side-gate is utilized to control the location of ions within a solid polymer electrolyte to form an electric double layer at the interface of electrolyte and WSe2 and induce a vertical electric field. Additionally, a back-gate is used to apply a 2nd vertical electric field. An on-off ratio of the light emission up to 90 was observed under constant pump light intensity. In addition, a blue shift of the photoluminescence line up to 36 meV was observed. We attribute this blue shift to the decrease of exciton binding energy due to the change of nonlinear in-plane dielectric constant and use it to determine the 3rd order off-diagonal susceptibility \c{hi}^((3) )=3.50*10^(-19)m2/V2.

UniSpeech-SAT: Universal Speech Representation Learning with Speaker Aware Pre-Training

Self-supervised learning (SSL) is a long-standing goal for speech processing, since it utilizes large-scale unlabeled data and avoids extensive human labeling. Recent years witness great successes in applying self-supervised learning in speech recognition, while limited exploration was attempted in applying SSL for modeling speaker characteristics. In this paper, we aim to improve the existing SSL framework for speaker representation learning. Two methods are introduced for enhancing the unsupervised speaker information extraction. First, we apply the multi-task learning to the current SSL framework, where we integrate the utterance-wise contrastive loss with the SSL objective function. Second, for better speaker discrimination, we propose an utterance mixing strategy for data augmentation, where additional overlapped utterances are created unsupervisely and incorporate during training. We integrate the proposed methods into the HuBERT framework. Experiment results on SUPERB benchmark show that the proposed system achieves state-of-the-art performance in universal representation learning, especially for speaker identification oriented tasks. An ablation study is performed verifying the efficacy of each proposed method. Finally, we scale up training dataset to 94 thousand hours public audio data and achieve further performance improvement in all SUPERB tasks.

A Comparative Study of Modular and Joint Approaches for Speaker-Attributed ASR on Monaural Long-Form Audio

Speaker-attributed automatic speech recognition (SA-ASR) is a task to recognize "who spoke what" from multi-talker recordings. An SA-ASR system usually consists of multiple modules such as speech separation, speaker diarization and ASR. On the other hand, considering the joint optimization, an end-to-end (E2E) SA-ASR model has recently been proposed with promising results on simulation data. In this paper, we present our recent study on the comparison of such modular and joint approaches towards SA-ASR on real monaural recordings. We develop state-of-the-art SA-ASR systems for both modular and joint approaches by leveraging large-scale training data, including 75 thousand hours of ASR training data and the VoxCeleb corpus for speaker representation learning. We also propose a new pipeline that performs the E2E SA-ASR model after speaker clustering. Our evaluation on the AMI meeting corpus reveals that after fine-tuning with a small real data, the joint system performs 8.9--29.9% better in accuracy compared to the best modular system while the modular system performs better before such fine-tuning. We also conduct various error analyses to show the remaining issues for the monaural SA-ASR.

A Neural Network-Based Linguistic Similarity Measure for Entrainment in Conversations

Linguistic entrainment is a phenomenon where people tend to mimic each other in conversation. The core instrument to quantify entrainment is a linguistic similarity measure between conversational partners. Most of the current similarity measures are based on bag-of-words approaches that rely on linguistic markers, ignoring the overall language structure and dialogue context. To address this issue, we propose to use a neural network model to perform the similarity measure for entrainment. Our model is context-aware, and it further leverages a novel component to learn the shared high-level linguistic features across dialogues. We first investigate the effectiveness of our novel component. Then we use the model to perform similarity measure in a corpus-based entrainment analysis. We observe promising results for both evaluation tasks.

AISHELL-4: An Open Source Dataset for Speech Enhancement, Separation, Recognition and Speaker Diarization in Conference Scenario

In this paper, we present AISHELL-4, a sizable real-recorded Mandarin speech dataset collected by 8-channel circular microphone array for speech processing in conference scenario. The dataset consists of 211 recorded meeting sessions, each containing 4 to 8 speakers, with a total length of 120 hours. This dataset aims to bridge the advanced research on multi-speaker processing and the practical application scenario in three aspects. With real recorded meetings, AISHELL-4 provides realistic acoustics and rich natural speech characteristics in conversation such as short pause, speech overlap, quick speaker turn, noise, etc. Meanwhile, accurate transcription and speaker voice activity are provided for each meeting in AISHELL-4. This allows the researchers to explore different aspects in meeting processing, ranging from individual tasks such as speech front-end processing, speech recognition and speaker diarization, to multi-modality modeling and joint optimization of relevant tasks. Given most open source dataset for multi-speaker tasks are in English, AISHELL-4 is the only Mandarin dataset for conversation speech, providing additional value for data diversity in speech community. We also release a PyTorch-based training and evaluation framework as baseline system to promote reproducible research in this field.

Numerical analysis of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) instability in dielectric liquid-gas flows subjected to unipolar injection

In this work, the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) instability induced by a unipolar charge injection is extended from a single-phase dielectric liquid to a two-phase system that consists of a liquid-air interface. A volume of fluid (VOF) model based two-phase solver was developed with simplified Maxwell equations implemented in the open-source platform OpenFOAM\textsuperscript. The numerically obtained critical value for the linear stability matches well with the theoretical values. To highlight the effect of the slip boundary at interface, the deformation of the interface is ignored. A bifurcation diagram with hysteresis loop linking the linear and finite amplitude criteria, which is Uf = 0.059, was obtained in this situation. It is concluded that the lack of viscous effect at interface leads to a significant increase in the flow intensity, which is the reason for the smaller instability threshold in two-phase system. The presence of interface also changes the flow structure and makes the flow vortices shift closer to the interface.

Investigation of Practical Aspects of Single Channel Speech Separation for ASR

Speech separation has been successfully applied as a frontend processing module of conversation transcription systems thanks to its ability to handle overlapped speech and its flexibility to combine with downstream tasks such as automatic speech recognition (ASR). However, a speech separation model often introduces target speech distortion, resulting in a sub-optimum word error rate (WER). In this paper, we describe our efforts to improve the performance of a single channel speech separation system. Specifically, we investigate a two-stage training scheme that firstly applies a feature level optimization criterion for pretraining, followed by an ASR-oriented optimization criterion using an end-to-end (E2E) speech recognition model. Meanwhile, to keep the model light-weight, we introduce a modified teacher-student learning technique for model compression. By combining those approaches, we achieve a absolute average WER improvement of 2.70% and 0.77% using models with less than 10M parameters compared with the previous state-of-the-art results on the LibriCSS dataset for utterance-wise evaluation and continuous evaluation, respectively

Chaotic electro-convection flow states of a dielectric liquid between two parallel electrodes

The two-dimensional regular and chaotic electro-convective flow states of a dielectric liquid between two infinite parallel planar electrodes are investigated using a two-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method. Positive charges injected at the metallic planar electrode located at the bottom of the dielectric liquid layer are transported towards the grounded upper electrode by the synergy of the flow and the electric field. The various flow states can be characterized by a non-dimensional parameter, the electric Rayleigh number. Gradually increasing the electric Rayleigh number, the flow system sequentially evolves via quasi-periodic, periodic, and chaotic flow states with five identified bifurcations. The turbulence kinetic energy spectrum is shown to follow the -3 law as the flow approaches turbulence. The spectrum is found to follow a -5 law when the flow is periodic.

Automatic Metadata Extraction Incorporating Visual Features from Scanned Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) contain domain knowledge that can be used for many digital library tasks, such as analyzing citation networks and predicting research trends. Automatic metadata extraction is important to build scalable digital library search engines. Most existing methods are designed for born-digital documents, so they often fail to extract metadata from scanned documents such as for ETDs. Traditional sequence tagging methods mainly rely on text-based features. In this paper, we propose a conditional random field (CRF) model that combines text-based and visual features. To verify the robustness of our model, we extended an existing corpus and created a new ground truth corpus consisting of 500 ETD cover pages with human validated metadata. Our experiments show that CRF with visual features outperformed both a heuristic and a CRF model with only text-based features. The proposed model achieved 81.3%-96% F1 measure on seven metadata fields. The data and source code are publicly available on Google Drive (https://tinyurl.com/y8kxzwrp) and a GitHub repository (https://github.com/lamps-lab/ETDMiner/tree/master/etd_crf), respectively.

Sequence-level Confidence Classifier for ASR Utterance Accuracy and Application to Acoustic Models

Scores from traditional confidence classifiers (CCs) in automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems lack universal interpretation and vary with updates to the underlying confidence or acoustic models (AMs). In this work, we build interpretable confidence scores with an objective to closely align with ASR accuracy. We propose a new sequence-level CC with a richer context providing CC scores highly correlated with ASR accuracy and scores stable across CC updates. Hence, expanding CC applications. Recently, AM customization has gained traction with the widespread use of unified models. Conventional adaptation strategies that customize AM expect well-matched data for the target domain with gold-standard transcriptions. We propose a cost-effective method of using CC scores to select an optimal adaptation data set, where we maximize ASR gains from minimal data. We study data in various confidence ranges and optimally choose data for AM adaptation with KL-Divergence regularization. On the Microsoft voice search task, data selection for supervised adaptation using the sequence-level confidence scores achieves word error rate reduction (WERR) of 8.5% for row-convolution LSTM (RC-LSTM) and 5.2% for latency-controlled bidirectional LSTM (LC-BLSTM). In the semi-supervised case, with ASR hypotheses as labels, our method provides WERR of 5.9% and 2.8% for RC-LSTM and LC-BLSTM, respectively.
