POEM: Reconstructing Hand in a Point Embedded Multi-view Stereo

Enable neural networks to capture 3D geometrical-aware features is essential in multi-view based vision tasks. Previous methods usually encode the 3D information of multi-view stereo into the 2D features. In contrast, we present a novel method, named POEM, that directly operates on the 3D POints Embedded in the Multi-view stereo for reconstructing hand mesh in it. Point is a natural form of 3D information and an ideal medium for fusing features across views, as it has different projections on different views. Our method is thus in light of a simple yet effective idea, that a complex 3D hand mesh can be represented by a set of 3D points that 1) are embedded in the multi-view stereo, 2) carry features from the multi-view images, and 3) encircle the hand. To leverage the power of points, we design two operations: point-based feature fusion and cross-set point attention mechanism. Evaluation on three challenging multi-view datasets shows that POEM outperforms the state-of-the-art in hand mesh reconstruction. Code and models are available for research at https://github.com/lixiny/POEM.

Byzantine-robust Federated Learning through Collaborative Malicious Gradient Filtering

Gradient-based training in federated learning is known to be vulnerable to faulty/malicious clients, which are often modeled as Byzantine clients. To this end, previous work either makes use of auxiliary data at parameter server to verify the received gradients (e.g., by computing validation error rate) or leverages statistic-based methods (e.g. median and Krum) to identify and remove malicious gradients from Byzantine clients. In this paper, we remark that auxiliary data may not always be available in practice and focus on the statistic-based approach. However, recent work on model poisoning attacks has shown that well-crafted attacks can circumvent most of median- and distance-based statistical defense methods, making malicious gradients indistinguishable from honest ones. To tackle this challenge, we show that the element-wise sign of gradient vector can provide valuable insight in detecting model poisoning attacks. Based on our theoretical analysis of the \textit{Little is Enough} attack, we propose a novel approach called \textit{SignGuard} to enable Byzantine-robust federated learning through collaborative malicious gradient filtering. More precisely, the received gradients are first processed to generate relevant magnitude, sign, and similarity statistics, which are then collaboratively utilized by multiple filters to eliminate malicious gradients before final aggregation. Finally, extensive experiments of image and text classification tasks are conducted under recently proposed attacks and defense strategies. The numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed approach. The code is available at \textit{\url{https://github.com/JianXu95/SignGuard}}

Real-time spectroscopic monitoring of continuous synthesis of zinc oxide nanostructures in femtosecond laser fabricated 3D microfluidic microchannels with integrated on-chip fiber probe array

Materials synthesis in a microfluidic environment enables the flexible and controllable production of various types of nanostructures which are of great potential in the fields of chemistry, environmental science, bioengineering, and medicine. Here, we demonstrate on-chip simultaneous continuous-flow synthesis and in-situ spectrum diagnosis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials using a femtosecond-fabricated three-dimensional microchannel reactor integrated with an array of optical fiber probes. The microchannel reactor including 3D concentration gradient generators followed by 3D micromixing units provides high-efficiency manipulation of reactants with different concentrations as well as parallel reaction dynamics in an autonomous manner. The integrated optical fiber probe array allows precise and parallel spectropic detection in different microchannels with high spatial and temporal resolutions for screening the synthetic conditions. The synthesized ZnO nanostructures can be tailored in size, shape, and morphology by tuning the flow rates and reactant concentrations based on the spectroscopic signals detected with the fiber probe array.

Dynamic models for Planar Peristaltic Locomotion of a Metameric Earthworm-like Robot

The development of versatile robots capable of traversing challenging and irregular environments is of increasing interest in the field of robotics, and metameric robots have been identified as a promising solution due to their slender, deformable bodies. Inspired by the effective locomotion of earthworms, earthworm-like robots capable of both rectilinear and planar locomotion have been designed and prototyped. While much research has focused on developing kinematic models to describe the planar locomotion of earthworm-like robots, the authors argue that the development of dynamic models is critical to improving the accuracy and efficiency of these robots. A comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of a metameric earthworm-like robot capable of planar motion is presented in this work. The model takes into account the complex interactions between the robot's deformable body and the forces acting on it and draws on the methods previously used to develop mathematical models of snake-like robots. The proposed model represents a significant advancement in the field of metameric robotics and has the potential to enhance the performance of earthworm-like robots in a variety of challenging environments, such as underground pipes and tunnels, and serves as a foundation for future research into the dynamics of soft-bodied robots.

Stabilizing and Improving Federated Learning with Non-IID Data and Client Dropout

The label distribution skew induced data heterogeniety has been shown to be a significant obstacle that limits the model performance in federated learning, which is particularly developed for collaborative model training over decentralized data sources while preserving user privacy. This challenge could be more serious when the participating clients are in unstable circumstances and dropout frequently. Previous work and our empirical observations demonstrate that the classifier head for classification task is more sensitive to label skew and the unstable performance of FedAvg mainly lies in the imbalanced training samples across different classes. The biased classifier head will also impact the learning of feature representations. Therefore, maintaining a balanced classifier head is of significant importance for building a better global model. To this end, we propose a simple yet effective framework by introducing a prior-calibrated softmax function for computing the cross-entropy loss and a prototype-based feature augmentation scheme to re-balance the local training, which are lightweight for edge devices and can facilitate the global model aggregation. The improved model performance over existing baselines in the presence of non-IID data and client dropout is demonstrated by conducting extensive experiments on benchmark classification tasks.

Building Dynamic Ontological Models for Place using Social Media Data from Twitter and Sina Weibo

Place holds human thoughts and experiences. Space is defined with geometric measurement and coordinate systems. Social media served as the connection between place and space. In this study, we use social media data (Twitter, Weibo) to build a dynamic ontological model in two separate areas: Beijing, China and San Diego, the U.S.A. Three spatial analytics methods are utilized to generate the place name ontology: 1) Kernel Density Estimation (KDE); 2) Dynamic Method Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN); 3) hierarchal clustering. We identified feature types of place name ontologies from geotagged social media data and classified them by comparing their default search radius of KDE of geo-tagged points. By tracing the seasonal changes of highly dynamic non-administrative places, seasonal variation patterns were observed, which illustrates the dynamic changes in place ontology caused by the change in human activities and conversation over time and space. We also investigate the semantic meaning of each place name by examining Pointwise Mutual Information (PMI) scores and word clouds. The major contribution of this research is to link and analyze the associations between place, space, and their attributes in the field of geography. Researchers can use crowd-sourced data to study the ontology of places rather than relying on traditional gazetteers. The dynamic ontology in this research can provide bright insight into urban planning and re-zoning and other related industries.

Learning Optimal Deterministic Auctions with Correlated Valuation Distributions

In mechanism design, it is challenging to design the optimal auction with correlated values in general settings. Although value distribution can be further exploited to improve revenue, the complex correlation structure makes it hard to acquire in practice. Data-driven auction mechanisms, powered by machine learning, enable to design auctions directly from historical auction data, without relying on specific value distributions. In this work, we design a learning-based auction, which can encode the correlation of values into the rank score of each bidder, and further adjust the ranking rule to approach the optimal revenue. We strictly guarantee the property of strategy-proofness by encoding game theoretical conditions into the neural network structure. Furthermore, all operations in the designed auctions are differentiable to enable an end-to-end training paradigm. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed auction mechanism can represent almost any strategy-proof auction mechanism, and outperforms the auction mechanisms wildly used in the correlated value settings.

The long-time asymptotic of the derivative nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation with step-like initial value

Consideration in this present paper is the long-time asymptotic of solutions to the derivative nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation with the step-like initial value \begin{eqnarray} q(x,0)=q_{0}(x)=\begin{cases} \begin{split} A_{1}e^{iϕ}e^{2iBx}, \quad\quad x<0,\\ A_{2}e^{-2iBx}, \quad\quad~~ x>0. \end{split}\nonumber \end{cases} \end{eqnarray} by Deift-Zhou method. The step-like initial problem described by a matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. A crucial ingredient used in this paper is to introduce $g$-function mechanism for solving the problem of the entries of the jump matrix growing exponentially as $t\rightarrow\infty$. It is shown that the leading order term of the asymptotic solution of the DNLS equation expressed by the Theta function $Θ$ about the Riemann-surface of genus 3 and the subleading order term expressed by parabolic cylinder and Airy functions.

Hierarchically Constrained Adaptive Ad Exposure in Feeds

A contemporary feed application usually provides blended results of organic items and sponsored items~(ads) to users. Conventionally, ads are exposed at fixed positions. Such a static exposure strategy is inefficient due to ignoring users' personalized preferences towards ads. To this end, adaptive ad exposure has become an appealing strategy to boost the overall performance of the feed. However, existing approaches to implementing the adaptive ad exposure still suffer from several limitations: 1) they usually fall into sub-optimal solutions because of only focusing on request-level optimization without consideration of the long-term application-level performance and constraints, 2) they neglect the necessity of keeping the game-theoretical properties of ad auctions, which may lead to anarchy in bidding, and 3) they can hardly be deployed in large-scale applications due to high computational complexity. In this paper, we focus on long-term performance optimization under hierarchical constraints in feeds and formulate the adaptive ad exposure as a Dynamic Knapsack Problem. We propose an effective approach: Hierarchically Constrained Adaptive Ad Exposure~(HCA2E). We present that HCA2E possesses desired game-theoretical properties, computational efficiency, and performance robustness. Comprehensive offline and online experiments on a leading e-commerce application demonstrate the significant performance superiority of HCA2E over representative baselines. HCA2E has also been deployed on this application to serve millions of daily users.

Sustainable Online Reinforcement Learning for Auto-bidding

Recently, auto-bidding technique has become an essential tool to increase the revenue of advertisers. Facing the complex and ever-changing bidding environments in the real-world advertising system (RAS), state-of-the-art auto-bidding policies usually leverage reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms to generate real-time bids on behalf of the advertisers. Due to safety concerns, it was believed that the RL training process can only be carried out in an offline virtual advertising system (VAS) that is built based on the historical data generated in the RAS. In this paper, we argue that there exists significant gaps between the VAS and RAS, making the RL training process suffer from the problem of inconsistency between online and offline (IBOO). Firstly, we formally define the IBOO and systematically analyze its causes and influences. Then, to avoid the IBOO, we propose a sustainable online RL (SORL) framework that trains the auto-bidding policy by directly interacting with the RAS, instead of learning in the VAS. Specifically, based on our proof of the Lipschitz smooth property of the Q function, we design a safe and efficient online exploration (SER) policy for continuously collecting data from the RAS. Meanwhile, we derive the theoretical lower bound on the safety of the SER policy. We also develop a variance-suppressed conservative Q-learning (V-CQL) method to effectively and stably learn the auto-bidding policy with the collected data. Finally, extensive simulated and real-world experiments validate the superiority of our approach over the state-of-the-art auto-bidding algorithm.

GBA: A Tuning-free Approach to Switch between Synchronous and Asynchronous Training for Recommendation Model

High-concurrency asynchronous training upon parameter server (PS) architecture and high-performance synchronous training upon all-reduce (AR) architecture are the most commonly deployed distributed training modes for recommendation models. Although synchronous AR training is designed to have higher training efficiency, asynchronous PS training would be a better choice for training speed when there are stragglers (slow workers) in the shared cluster, especially under limited computing resources. An ideal way to take full advantage of these two training modes is to switch between them upon the cluster status. However, switching training modes often requires tuning hyper-parameters, which is extremely time- and resource-consuming. We find two obstacles to a tuning-free approach: the different distribution of the gradient values and the stale gradients from the stragglers. This paper proposes Global Batch gradients Aggregation (GBA) over PS, which aggregates and applies gradients with the same global batch size as the synchronous training. A token-control process is implemented to assemble the gradients and decay the gradients with severe staleness. We provide the convergence analysis to reveal that GBA has comparable convergence properties with the synchronous training, and demonstrate the robustness of GBA the recommendation models against the gradient staleness. Experiments on three industrial-scale recommendation tasks show that GBA is an effective tuning-free approach for switching. Compared to the state-of-the-art derived asynchronous training, GBA achieves up to 0.2% improvement on the AUC metric, which is significant for the recommendation models. Meanwhile, under the strained hardware resource, GBA speeds up at least 2.4x compared to synchronous training.

Object Level Depth Reconstruction for Category Level 6D Object Pose Estimation From Monocular RGB Image

Recently, RGBD-based category-level 6D object pose estimation has achieved promising improvement in performance, however, the requirement of depth information prohibits broader applications. In order to relieve this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach named Object Level Depth reconstruction Network (OLD-Net) taking only RGB images as input for category-level 6D object pose estimation. We propose to directly predict object-level depth from a monocular RGB image by deforming the category-level shape prior into object-level depth and the canonical NOCS representation. Two novel modules named Normalized Global Position Hints (NGPH) and Shape-aware Decoupled Depth Reconstruction (SDDR) module are introduced to learn high fidelity object-level depth and delicate shape representations. At last, the 6D object pose is solved by aligning the predicted canonical representation with the back-projected object-level depth. Extensive experiments on the challenging CAMERA25 and REAL275 datasets indicate that our model, though simple, achieves state-of-the-art performance.

FedHAP: Federated Hashing with Global Prototypes for Cross-silo Retrieval

Deep hashing has been widely applied in large-scale data retrieval due to its superior retrieval efficiency and low storage cost. However, data are often scattered in data silos with privacy concerns, so performing centralized data storage and retrieval is not always possible. Leveraging the concept of federated learning (FL) to perform deep hashing is a recent research trend. However, existing frameworks mostly rely on the aggregation of the local deep hashing models, which are trained by performing similarity learning with local skewed data only. Therefore, they cannot work well for non-IID clients in a real federated environment. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel federated hashing framework that enables participating clients to jointly train the shared deep hashing model by leveraging the prototypical hash codes for each class. Globally, the transmission of global prototypes with only one prototypical hash code per class will minimize the impact of communication cost and privacy risk. Locally, the use of global prototypes are maximized by jointly training a discriminator network and the local hashing network. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets are conducted to demonstrate that our method can significantly improve the performance of the deep hashing model in the federated environments with non-IID data distributions.

Learning Disentangled Representations for Counterfactual Regression via Mutual Information Minimization

Learning individual-level treatment effect is a fundamental problem in causal inference and has received increasing attention in many areas, especially in the user growth area which concerns many internet companies. Recently, disentangled representation learning methods that decompose covariates into three latent factors, including instrumental, confounding and adjustment factors, have witnessed great success in treatment effect estimation. However, it remains an open problem how to learn the underlying disentangled factors precisely. Specifically, previous methods fail to obtain independent disentangled factors, which is a necessary condition for identifying treatment effect. In this paper, we propose Disentangled Representations for Counterfactual Regression via Mutual Information Minimization (MIM-DRCFR), which uses a multi-task learning framework to share information when learning the latent factors and incorporates MI minimization learning criteria to ensure the independence of these factors. Extensive experiments including public benchmarks and real-world industrial user growth datasets demonstrate that our method performs much better than state-of-the-art methods.

Unconventional steady states and topological phases in an open two-level non-Hermitian system

Decoherence and non-Hermiticity are two different effects of the open quantum systems. Both of them have triggered many interesting phenomena. In this paper, we theoretically study an open two-level non-Hermitian system coupling to a dissipative environment by solving the vectorized Lindblad equation. This scheme provides us a powerful framework to address widespread open systems with gain, loss and dissipation. Our results show that there exist a new class of exceptional points (EPs) and steady states due to the interplay between non-Hermiticity and decoherence. Furthermore, we also demonstrate new-type topological properties of eigenstates with zero real-part of eigenvalues ($Re[λ]=0$) which are corresponding to Fermi arcs. It is revealed that the phases of eigenstates located in Fermi arcs regime have a topological phase $|π/2|$ which is totally unaffected by the dissipative environment. Our results provide a promising approach for further uncovering and understanding the intriguing properties of non-Hermitian open systems.

An Information-theoretic Method for Collaborative Distributed Learning with Limited Communication

In this paper, we study the information transmission problem under the distributed learning framework, where each worker node is merely permitted to transmit a $m$-dimensional statistic to improve learning results of the target node. Specifically, we evaluate the corresponding expected population risk (EPR) under the regime of large sample sizes. We prove that the performance can be enhanced since the transmitted statistics contribute to estimating the underlying distribution under the mean square error measured by the EPR norm matrix. Accordingly, the transmitted statistics correspond to the eigenvectors of this matrix, and the desired transmission allocates these eigenvectors among the statistics such that the EPR is minimal. Moreover, we provide the analytical solution of the desired statistics for single-node and two-node transmission, where a geometrical interpretation is given to explain the eigenvector selection. For the general case, an efficient algorithm that can output the allocation solution is developed based on the node partitions.

Visual Encoding and Debiasing for CTR Prediction

Extracting expressive visual features is crucial for accurate Click-Through-Rate (CTR) prediction in visual search advertising systems. Current commercial systems use off-the-shelf visual encoders to facilitate fast online service. However, the extracted visual features are coarse-grained and/or biased. In this paper, we present a visual encoding framework for CTR prediction to overcome these problems. The framework is based on contrastive learning which pulls positive pairs closer and pushes negative pairs apart in the visual feature space. To obtain fine-grained visual features,we present contrastive learning supervised by click through data to fine-tune the visual encoder. To reduce sample selection bias, firstly we train the visual encoder offline by leveraging both unbiased self-supervision and click supervision signals. Secondly, we incorporate a debiasing network in the online CTR predictor to adjust the visual features by contrasting high impression items with selected items with lower impressions. We deploy the framework in the visual sponsor search system at Alibaba. Offline experiments on billion-scale datasets and online experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework can make accurate and unbiased predictions.

Multi-CPR: A Multi Domain Chinese Dataset for Passage Retrieval

Passage retrieval is a fundamental task in information retrieval (IR) research, which has drawn much attention recently. In the English field, the availability of large-scale annotated dataset (e.g, MS MARCO) and the emergence of deep pre-trained language models (e.g, BERT) has resulted in a substantial improvement of existing passage retrieval systems. However, in the Chinese field, especially for specific domains, passage retrieval systems are still immature due to quality-annotated dataset being limited by scale. Therefore, in this paper, we present a novel multi-domain Chinese dataset for passage retrieval (Multi-CPR). The dataset is collected from three different domains, including E-commerce, Entertainment video and Medical. Each dataset contains millions of passages and a certain amount of human annotated query-passage related pairs. We implement various representative passage retrieval methods as baselines. We find that the performance of retrieval models trained on dataset from general domain will inevitably decrease on specific domain. Nevertheless, a passage retrieval system built on in-domain annotated dataset can achieve significant improvement, which indeed demonstrates the necessity of domain labeled data for further optimization. We hope the release of the Multi-CPR dataset could benchmark Chinese passage retrieval task in specific domain and also make advances for future studies.
