Asymptotic Behavior of Solutions for Competitive Models with Free Boundaries

In this paper, we study a competitive model involving two species. When the competition is strong enough, the two species are separated by a free boundary. If the initial data has a positive bound at infinity. We prove that the solution will converge, as $t\rightarrow \infty$, to the traveling wave solution and the free boundary will move to infinity with a constant speed.

Study of n-γ discrimination in low energy range (above 40 keVee) by charge comparison method with a BC501A liquid scintillation detector

A VME-based experiment system for n-γ discrimination using the charge comparison method was established. A data acquisition program for controlling the programmable modules and processing data online via VME64X bus was developed through the use of LabVIEW. The two-dimensional (2D) scatter plots of the charge in the slow component vs. the total charge of recorded pulses from Am-Be and Cf neutron sources were presented. The 2D scatter plots of the energy vs. the ratio of the charge in the slow component to the total charge of the pulses were presented at the meantime. The quality of n-γ discrimination was checked by the figure-of-merit, and the results showed good performance of n-γ discrimination at low energy range. Neutrons and γ-rays were separated above 50 keVee (electron-equivalent energy). The quality of n-γ discrimination have been improved compared with others' results at 5 energies (150, 250, 350, 450, 550 keVee).

Rapid and reliable thickness identification of two-dimensional nanosheets using optical microscopy

The physical and electronic properties of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterials are highly related to their thickness. Therefore, the rapid and accurate identification of single- and few- to multi-layer nanosheets is essential to their fundamental study and practical applications. Here, a universal optical method has been developed for simple, rapid and reliable identification of single- to quindecuple-layer (1L-15L) 2D nanosheets, including graphene, MoS2, WSe2 and TaS2, on Si substrates coated with 90 nm or 300 nm SiO2. The optical contrast differences between the substrates and 2D nanosheets with different layer numbers were collected and tabulated, serving as a standard reference, from which the layer number of a given nanosheet can be readily and reliably determined without using complex calculation nor expensive instrument. Our general optical identification method will facilitate the thickness-dependent study of various 2D nanomaterials, and expedite their research toward practical applications.

Connection dynamics of a gauge theory of gravity coupled with matter

We study the coupling of the gravitational action, which is a linear combination of the Hilbert-Palatini term and the quadratic torsion term, to the action of Dirac fermions. The system possesses local Poincare invariance and hence belongs to Poincare gauge theory with matter. The complete Hamiltonian analysis of the theory is carried out without gauge fixing but under certain ansatz on the coupling parameters, which leads to a consistent connection dynamics with second-class constraints and torsion. After performing a partial gauge fixing, all second-class constraints can be solved, and a SU(2)-connection dynamical formalism of the theory can be obtained. Hence, the techniques of loop quantum gravity can be employed to quantize this Poincare gauge theory with non-zero torsion. Moreover, the Barbero-Immirzi parameter in loop quantum gravity acquires its physical meaning as the coupling parameter between the Hilbert-Palatini term and the quadratic torsion term in this gauge theory of gravity.

Traveling Wave Solutions of Competitive Models with Free Boundaries

We study two systems of reaction diffusion equations with monostable or bistable type of nonlinearity and with free boundaries. These systems are used as multi-species competitive model. For two-species models, we prove the existence of a traveling wave solution which consists of two semi-waves intersecting at the free boundary. For three-species models, we also prove the existence of a traveling wave solution which, however, consists of two semi-waves and one compactly supported wave in between, each intersecting with its neighbor at the free boundary.

Zero-point attracting projection algorithm for sequential compressive sensing

Sequential Compressive Sensing, which may be widely used in sensing devices, is a popular topic of recent research. This paper proposes an online recovery algorithm for sparse approximation of sequential compressive sensing. Several techniques including warm start, fast iteration, and variable step size are adopted in the proposed algorithm to improve its online performance. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate its better performance than the relative art.

Hamiltonian Analysis of $R + T^2$ Action

We study a gravitational action which is a linear combination of the Hilbert-Palatini term and a term quadratic in torsion and possessing local Poincare invariance. Although this action yields the same equations of motion as General Relativity, the detailed Hamiltonian analysis without gauge fixing reveals some new points never shown in the Hilbert-Palatini formalism. These include that an additional term containing torsion appears in the spatial diffeomorphism constraint and that the primary second-class constraints have to be imposed in a manner different from that in the Hilbert-Palatini case. These results may provide valuable lessons for further study of Hamiltonian systems with torsion.

SHALE: An Efficient Algorithm for Allocation of Guaranteed Display Advertising

Motivated by the problem of optimizing allocation in guaranteed display advertising, we develop an efficient, lightweight method of generating a compact {\em allocation plan} that can be used to guide ad server decisions. The plan itself uses just O(1) state per guaranteed contract, is robust to noise, and allows us to serve (provably) nearly optimally. The optimization method we develop is scalable, with a small in-memory footprint, and working in linear time per iteration. It is also "stop-anytime", meaning that time-critical applications can stop early and still get a good serving solution. Thus, it is particularly useful for optimizing the large problems arising in the context of display advertising. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm using actual Yahoo! data.

Regularized Robust Coding for Face Recognition

Recently the sparse representation based classification (SRC) has been proposed for robust face recognition (FR). In SRC, the testing image is coded as a sparse linear combination of the training samples, and the representation fidelity is measured by the l2-norm or l1-norm of the coding residual. Such a sparse coding model assumes that the coding residual follows Gaussian or Laplacian distribution, which may not be effective enough to describe the coding residual in practical FR systems. Meanwhile, the sparsity constraint on the coding coefficients makes SRC's computational cost very high. In this paper, we propose a new face coding model, namely regularized robust coding (RRC), which could robustly regress a given signal with regularized regression coefficients. By assuming that the coding residual and the coding coefficient are respectively independent and identically distributed, the RRC seeks for a maximum a posterior solution of the coding problem. An iteratively reweighted regularized robust coding (IR3C) algorithm is proposed to solve the RRC model efficiently. Extensive experiments on representative face databases demonstrate that the RRC is much more effective and efficient than state-of-the-art sparse representation based methods in dealing with face occlusion, corruption, lighting and expression changes, etc.

Improved Four-state Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution with Long Secure Distance

The four-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) protocol has a long practical secure distance \cite{Leverrier_PRL_2009}, while it has the difficulty of parameter estimation. We propose an improved four-state protocol, where the covariance matrix can be estimated from experimental data without using the linear channel assumption, and thus ensuring its unconditional security in the asymptotical limit. Our new scheme keeps the advantages of high reconciliation efficiency and long secure distance of the four-state protocol, and it can be implemented under current technology.

New Trial Wave Functions for Quantum Hall States at Half Filling

New trial wave functions corresponding to half filling quantum Hall states are proposed. These wave functions are constructed by first pairing up the quasielectrons of the 1/3 Laughlin quantum Hall state, with the same relative angular momentum for each pair, and then making the paired quasielectrons condense into a 1/4 Laughlin state. The quasiparticle excitations of the proposed wave functions carry $\pm1/4$ of electron charge, and obey Abelian fractional statistics. In the spherical geometry, the total flux quanta $N_ϕ$ is shown to be related to the number of electrons $N$ by $N_ϕ = 2N-(5-q)$ with $q$ being the relative angular momentum between the quasielectrons in each pair which takes values of non-negative even integers. The overlaps are calculated between the proposed trial wave functions, including the ground state, quasiexciton states, and quasihole states, and the exact states of the finite size systems at $N_ϕ = 2N-3$. The near unity overlaps are obtained in the lowest Landau level, while the moderate overlaps are obtained in the second Landau level. The relevance of the wave functions to the yet to be discovered fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level, as well as the 5/2 quantum Hall effect is also discussed.

Source monitoring for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

The noise in optical source needs to be characterized for the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). Two feasible schemes, based on either active optical switch or passive beamsplitter are proposed to monitor the variance of source noise, through which, Eve's knowledge can be properly estimated. We derive the security bounds for both schemes against collective attacks in the asymptotic case, and find that the passive scheme performs better.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with Gaussian source noise

Source noise affects the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD), and is diffcult to analyze. We propose a model to characterize Gaussian source noise through introducing a neutral party (Fred) who induces the noise with a general unitary transformation. Without knowing Fred's exact state, we derive the security bounds for both reverse and direct reconciliations and show that the bound for reverse reconciliation is tight.

Inventory Allocation for Online Graphical Display Advertising

We discuss a multi-objective/goal programming model for the allocation of inventory of graphical advertisements. The model considers two types of campaigns: guaranteed delivery (GD), which are sold months in advance, and non-guaranteed delivery (NGD), which are sold using real-time auctions. We investigate various advertiser and publisher objectives such as (a) revenue from the sale of impressions, clicks and conversions, (b) future revenue from the sale of NGD inventory, and (c) "fairness" of allocation. While the first two objectives are monetary, the third is not. This combination of demand types and objectives leads to potentially many variations of our model, which we delineate and evaluate. Our experimental results, which are based on optimization runs using real data sets, demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed model.

Quantum interface between frequency-uncorrelated down-converted entanglement and atomic-ensemble quantum memory

Photonic entanglement source and quantum memory are two basic building blocks of linear-optical quantum computation and long-distance quantum communication. In the past decades, intensive researches have been carried out, and remarkable progress, particularly based on the spontaneous parametric down-converted (SPDC) entanglement source and atomic ensembles, has been achieved. Currently, an important task towards scalable quantum information processing (QIP) is to efficiently write and read entanglement generated from a SPDC source into and out of an atomic quantum memory. Here we report the first experimental realization of a quantum interface by building a 5 MHz frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source and reversibly mapping the generated entangled photons into and out of a remote optically thick cold atomic memory using electromagnetically induced transparency. The frequency correlation between the entangled photons is almost fully eliminated with a suitable pump pulse. The storage of a triggered single photon with arbitrary polarization is shown to reach an average fidelity of 92% for 200 ns storage time. Moreover, polarization-entangled photon pairs are prepared, and one of photons is stored in the atomic memory while the other keeps flying. The CHSH Bell's inequality is measured and violation is clearly observed for storage time up to 1 microsecond. This demonstrates the entanglement is stored and survives during the storage. Our work establishes a crucial element to implement scalable all-optical QIP, and thus presents a substantial progress in quantum information science.

Tortoise coordinate and Hawking effect in the Kinnersley spacetime

Hawking effect from the Kinnersley spacetime is investigated using the improved Damour-Ruffini method with a new coordinate transformation. Hawking temperature of the horizons can be obtained point by point. It is found that Hawking temperatures of different points on the horizons are different. Especially, Hawking temperature of Rindler horizon is investigated. The touch between a Kinnersley black hole and its Rindler horizon is considered, and it shows that the phenomenon is related to the third law of thermodynamics.

Experimental Quantum Teleportation and Multi-Photon Entanglement via Interfering Narrowband Photon Sources

In this letter, we report a realization of synchronization-free quantum teleportation and narrowband three-photon entanglement through interfering narrowband photon sources. Since both the single-photon and the entangled photon pair utilized are completely autonomous, it removes the requirement of high demanding synchronization technique in long-distance quantum communication with pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources. The frequency linewidth of the three-photon entanglement realized is on the order of several MHz, which matches the requirement of atomic ensemble based quantum memories. Such a narrowband multi-photon source will have applications in some advanced quantum communication protocols and linear optical quantum computation.
