On an inverse boundary value problem for a nonlinear elastic wave equation

We consider an inverse boundary value problem for a nonlinear elastic wave equation which was studied in [de Hoop, Uhlmann, Wang. Math. Ann. (2019) doi:10.1007/s00208-018-01796-y]. We show that all the parameters appearing in the equation can be uniquely determined from boundary measurements under certain geometric assumptions. The proof is based on second order linearization and Gaussian beams.

Lipschitz stability for an inverse source scattering problem at a fixed frequency

This paper is concerned with an inverse source problem for the three-dimensional Helmholtz equation by a single boundary measurement at a fixed frequency. We show the Lipschitz stability under the assumption that the source function is piecewise constant on a domain which is made of a union of disjoint convex polyhedral subdomains..

Notes on tensor tomography on Riemannian manifolds with boundaries

We summarize the proofs for the s-injectivity of the tensor tomography problem on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundaries in [Dairbekov, Inverse Problems, 22: 431, 2006] and [Paternain-Salo-Uhlmann, Math. Ann., 363: 305-362, 2015] under certain geometric assumptions.

Generic uniqueness and stability for the mixed ray transform

We consider the mixed ray transform of tensor fields on a three-dimensional compact simple Riemannian manifold with boundary. We prove the injectivity of the transform, up to natural obstructions, and establish stability estimates for the normal operator on generic three dimensional simple manifold in the case of 1+1 and 2+2 tensors fields. We show how the anisotropic perturbations of averaged isotopic travel-times of qS-polarized elastic waves provide partial information about the mixed ray transform of 2+2 tensors fields. If in addition we include the measurement of the shear wave amplitude, the complete mixed ray transform can be recovered. We also show how one can obtain the mixed ray transform from an anisotropic perturbation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of an isotropic elastic wave equation on a smooth and bounded domain in three dimensional Euclidean space.

An inverse spectral problem for a damped wave operator

This paper proposes a new and efficient numerical algorithm for recovering the damping coefficient from the spectrum of a damped wave operator, which is a classical Borg-Levinson inverse spectral problem. The algorithm is based on inverting a sequence of trace formulas, which are deduced by a recursive formula, bridging geometrical and spectrum information explicitly in terms of Fredholm integral equations. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Semiclassical inverse spectral problem for elastic Rayleigh waves in isotropic media

We analyze the inverse spectral problem on the half line associated with elastic surface waves. Here, we extend the treatment of Love waves [arXiv: 1908.10529] to Rayleigh waves. Under certain conditions, and assuming that the Poisson ratio is constant, we establish uniqueness and present a reconstruction scheme for the S-wave speed with multiple wells from the semiclassical spectrum of these waves.

Inversion of trace formulas for a Sturm-Liouville operator

This paper revisits the classical problem "Can we hear the density of a string?", which can be formulated as an inverse spectral problem for a Sturm-Liouville operator. Based on inverting a sequence of trace formulas, we propose a new numerical scheme to reconstruct the density. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the validity and effectiveness of the numerical scheme.

Unique determination of a transversely isotropic perturbation in a linearized inverse boundary value problem for elasticity

We consider a linearized inverse boundary value problem for the elasticity system. From the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at zero frequency, we show that a transversely isotropic perturbation of a homogeneous isotropic elastic tensor can be uniquely determined. From the linearized Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at two distinct positive frequencies, we show that a transversely isotropic perturbation of a homogeneous isotropic density can be identified at the same time.

Unique recovery of piecewise analytic density and stiffness tensor from the elastic-wave Dirichlet-to-Neumann map

We study the recovery of piecewise analytic density and stiffness tensor of a three-dimensional domain from the local dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We give global uniqueness results if the medium is transversely isotropic with known axis of symmetry or orthorhombic with known symmetry planes on each subdomain. We also obtain uniqueness of a fully anisotropic stiffness tensor, assuming that it is piecewise constant and that the interfaces which separate the subdomains have curved portions. The domain partition need not to be known. Precisely, we show that a domain partition consisting of subanalytic sets is simultaneously uniquely determined.

Inverting the local geodesic ray transform of higher rank tensors

Consider a Riemannian manifold in dimension $n\geq 3$ with strictly convex boundary. We prove the local invertibility, up to potential fields, of the geodesic ray transform on tensor fields of rank four near a boundary point. This problem is closely related with elastic \textit{qP}-wave tomography. Under the condition that the manifold can be foliated with a continuous family of strictly convex hypersurfaces, the local invertibility implies a global result. One can straightforwardedly adapt the proof to show similar results for tensor fields of arbitrary rank.

Reconstruction of Lame moduli and density at the boundary enabling directional elastic wavefield decomposition

We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the system of equations describing elastic waves in isotropic media on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$ via a finite-time Laplace transform. The data is the dynamical Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. More precisely, using the full symbol of the transformed Dirichlet-to-Neumann map viewed as a semiclassical pseudodifferential operator, we give an explicit reconstruction of both Lamé parameters and the density, as well as their derivatives, at the boundary. We also show how this boundary reconstruction leads to a decomposition of incoming and outgoing waves.
