An Adjustable Farthest Point Sampling Method for Approximately-sorted Point Cloud Data

Sampling is an essential part of raw point cloud data processing such as in the popular PointNet++ scheme. Farthest Point Sampling (FPS), which iteratively samples the farthest point and performs distance updating, is one of the most popular sampling schemes. Unfortunately it suffers from low efficiency and can become the bottleneck of point cloud applications. We propose adjustable FPS (AFPS), parameterized by M, to aggressively reduce the complexity of FPS without compromising on the sampling performance. Specifically, it divides the original point cloud into M small point clouds and samples M points simultaneously. It exploits the dimensional locality of an approximately sorted point cloud data to minimize its performance degradation. AFPS method can achieve 22 to 30x speedup over original FPS. Furthermore, we propose the nearest-point-distance-updating (NPDU) method to limit the number of distance updates to a constant number. The combined NPDU on AFPS method can achieve a 34-280x speedup on a point cloud with 2K-32K points with algorithmic performance that is comparable to the original FPS. For instance, for the ShapeNet part segmentation task, it achieves 0.8490 instance average mIoU (mean Intersection of Union), which is only 0.0035 drop compared to the original FPS.

Exploring gluon tomography with polarization dependent diffractive J/$ψ$ production

We study azimuthal asymmetries in diffractive J/$ψ$ production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies using the color glass condensate effective theory. Our calculation successfully describes azimuthal averaged $J/ψ$ production cross section measured by STAR and ALICE. We further predict very large $\cos 2ϕ$ and $\cos 4ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries for diffractive $J/ψ$ production both in UPCs at RHIC and LHC energies and in eA collisions at EIC energy. These novel polarization dependent observables may provide complementary information for constraining gluon transverse spatial distribution inside large nuclei. As compared to all previous analysis of diffractive $J/ψ$ production, the essential new elements integrated in our theoretical calculations are: the double-slit interference effect, the linear polarization of coherent photons, and the final state soft photon radiation effect.

Crystallizing Kagome artificial spin ice

Artificial spin ices are engineered arrays of dipolarly coupled nanobar magnets. They enable direct investigations of fascinating collective phenomena from their diverse microstates. However, experimental access to ground states in the geometrically frustrated systems has proven difficult, limiting studies and applications of novel properties and functionalities from the low energy states. Here, we introduce a convenient approach to control the competing diploar interactions between the neighboring nanomagnets, allowing us to tailor the vertex degeneracy of the ground states. We achieve this by tuning the length of selected nanobar magnets in the spin ice lattice. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by realizing multiple low energy microstates in a Kagome artificial spin ice, particularly the hardly accessible long range ordered ground state - the spin crystal state. Our strategy can be directly applied to other artificial spin systems to achieve exotic phases and explore new emergent collective behaviors.

Designing inorganic semiconductors with cold-rolling processability

While metals can be readily processed and reshaped by cold rolling, most bulk inorganic semiconductors are brittle materials that tend to fracture when plastically deformed. Manufacturing thin sheets and foils of inorganic semiconductors is therefore a bottleneck problem, severely restricting their use in flexible electronics applications. It was recently reported that a few single-crystalline two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors, such as InSe, are deformable under compressive stress. Here we demonstrate that intralayer fracture toughness can be tailored via compositional design to make inorganic semiconductors processable by cold rolling. We report systematic ab initio calculations covering a range of van der Waals semiconductors homologous to InSe, leading to material-property maps that forecast trends in both the susceptibility to interlayer slip and the intralayer fracture toughness against cracking. GaSe has been predicted, and experimentally confirmed, to be practically amenable to being rolled to large (three quarters) thickness reduction and length extension by a factor of three. Our findings open a new realm of possibility for alloy selection and design towards processing-friendly group-III chalcogenides for flexible electronic and thermoelectric applications.

Azimuthal Angular Asymmetry of Soft Gluon Radiation in Jet Production

We investigate the impact of soft gluon resummation on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two energetic final state particles (jets). We show that the initial and final state radiations induce sizable $\cos(ϕ)$ and $\cos (2ϕ)$ asymmetries in single jet and dijet events, respectively. We numerically evaluate the magnitude of these asymmetries for a number of processes in collider experiments, including diffractive dijet and dilepton production in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC and inclusive dijet production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC. In particular, the $\cos (2ϕ)$ asymmetry of perturbative origin can dominate over the primordial asymmetry due to the linearly polarized gluon distribution.

Grothendieck's Dessins d'Enfants in a Web of Dualities. III

We identify the dessin partition function with the partition function of the Laguerre unitary ensemble (LUE). Combined with the result due to Cunden et al on the relationship between the LUE correlators and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers introduced by Goulden et al, we then establish connection of dessin counting to strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. We also introduce a correction factor for the dessin/LUE partition function, which plays an important role in showing that the corrected dessin/LUE partition function is a tau-function of the Toda lattice hierarchy. As an application, we use the approach of Dubrovin and Zhang for the computation of the dessin correlators. In physicists' terminology, we establish dualities among dessin counting, generalized Penner model, and $\mathbb{P}^1$-topological sigma model.

Anisotropic terahertz optostriction in group-IV monochalcogenide compounds

Terahertz (THz) technology is a cutting-edge scheme with various promising applications, such as next generation telecommunication, non-destructive evaluation, security check, and in-depth characterization, owing to their sensitivity to material geometric change and good transparency. Even though tremendous progresses have been made during the past decade, exploration the mechanisms of THz-matter interaction microscopically is still in its infancy. In this work, we use thermodynamic theory to show how THz illumination deforms materials and use group-IV monochalcogenide compounds to illustrate it. According to our first-principles density functional theory calculations, THz light with intermediate intensity (~109 W/cm2) could yield elastic deformations on the order of ~0.1%, depending on laser polarization direction. Large anisotropic opto-mechanical responses are also revealed. Finally, we show that such strain can be detected via measuring the layer-resolved shift current under a probe light irradiation.

On the kinematic constraint in BFKL near threshold region

We introduce a modified Balitskii-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation with the rapidity veto that originates from external kinematic constraint. Though it is a formally sub-leading power contribution, such kinematic effect becomes very important especially in the threshold region, where there is no sufficient phase space for the small $x$ evolution to be fully developed. We also investigate the phenomenological consequences of the kinematic constraint BFKL equation in the forward particle production processes in pp and eA collisions. It is shown that particle yield at large transverse momentum is significantly suppressed in the threshold region.

Energy evolution of T-odd gluon TMDs at small $x$

We study the energy or TMD evolution of the three leading twist dipole type T-odd gluon TMDs inside a transversely polarized nucleon, all of which at small $x$ dynamically originate from the spin dependent odderon. Their energy dependence presents a unique opportunity to study the polarization dependent TMD evolution in the small-$x$ region, where the distributions are identical up to a normalization constant at tree level. We further propose to study their evolution via azimuthal asymmetries in virtual photon-jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC. We present model predictions for the asymmetries as functions of the large jet or photon transverse momentum and $Q^2$ which set the hard scales in this process.

Probing the gluon tomography in photoproduction of di-pions

A sizable $\cos 4ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in exclusive di-pion production near $ρ^0$ resonance peak in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions recently has been reported by STAR collaboration. We show that both elliptic gluon Wigner distribution and final state soft photon radiation can give rise to this azimuthal asymmetry. The fact that the QED effect alone severely underestimates the observed asymmetry might signal the existence of the nontrivial correlation in quantum phase distribution of gluons.

Switchable Topological Phase Transition and Novel Nonlinear Optical Properties in ReC2H Monolayer

Extensive investigations on topological phase transition (TPT) in three-dimensional compounds have been done. whereas, rare in two-dimensional systems, let alone noncentrosymmetric materials. In this work, based on first-principles calculations, we explore an inversion symmetry broken structural ReC2H monolayer. We reveal that it undergoes two TPTs, namely from normal insulator to Z2 topological insulator and back to normal insulator, at the critical biaxial strain of 2.3% and 7.8%, respectively. The band inversion occurs at the generic momentum in the first TPT, while at high symmetric K point in the second one. Usually, band inversion is identified by the exchange in the components or irreducible representations of the wavefunctions. These quantities can be easily obtained in theoretical calculation but hard to be detected in experimental techniques like Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. It is well known that nonlinear optical (NLO) response is very sensitive to the components and symmetries of the engaged bands, which also incorporates information of band topology. Therefore, we study the shift current, one of the widely explored NLO responses in noncentrosymmetric systems, during the two TPTs. We find that in both cases band inversion leads to the sign change of shift vectors around the momenta where the bandgap closes and reopens. Whereas the shift current, as the overall contribution of shift vectors weighted by the absorption rate in the whole Brillouin zone, may keep its direction. This work offers insight that a scrutinized examination is highly demanded in utilizing shift current to detect TPT.

Photo-magnetization in two-dimensional sliding ferroelectrics

Light-matter interaction is one of the key routes to understanding and manipulating geometric and electronic behaviors of materials, especially two-dimensional materials which are optically accessible owing to their high surface to volume ratio. In the current work we focus on the recently discovered two-dimensional sliding ferroelectric materials, in which the out-of-plane electric polarization can be switched with a small horizontal translation in one layer. Combining symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we predict that light illumination could inject non-equilibrium magnetic moments into the sliding ferroelectrics. Such magnetic moment is composed of both spin and orbital degrees of freedom contributions. We use $\mathrm{ZrI}_2$, $\mathrm{WTe}_2$, and $\mathrm{MoS}_2$ bilayer ferroelectrics to illustrate our theory. Under intermediate light illumination, one can yield non-equilibrium magnetic moments on the order of $0.1-1$ $μ_B$ in these systems, which also depends on the polarization nature of incident light. Furthermore, we show that such photo-injected magnetism changes its sign when the sliding dipole moment switches. This photo-magnetization can be detected by magneto-optical methods (such as Kerr or Faraday effect), which serves as an indicator of sliding ferroelectricity. Hence, one can use an all-optical pump and probe setup to measure and detect the subtle sliding ferroelectric phase.

The Virasoro-like Algebra of a Frobenius Manifold

For an arbitrary calibrated Frobenius manifold, we construct an infinite dimensional Lie algebra, called the Virasoro-like algebra, which is a deformation of the Virasoro algebra of the Frobenius manifold. By using the Virasoro-like algebra we give a family of quadratic PDEs that are satisfied by the genus-zero free energy of the Frobenius manifold. We also derive, under the semisimplicity assumption, the Virasoro constraints for the corresponding abstract Hodge partition function.

Attention-Guided Generative Adversarial Network for Whisper to Normal Speech Conversion

Whispered speech is a special way of pronunciation without using vocal cord vibration. A whispered speech does not contain a fundamental frequency, and its energy is about 20dB lower than that of a normal speech. Converting a whispered speech into a normal speech can improve speech quality and intelligibility. In this paper, a novel attention-guided generative adversarial network model incorporating an autoencoder, a Siamese neural network, and an identity mapping loss function for whisper to normal speech conversion (AGAN-W2SC) is proposed. The proposed method avoids the challenge of estimating the fundamental frequency of the normal voiced speech converted from a whispered speech. Specifically, the proposed model is more amendable to practical applications because it does not need to align speech features for training. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed AGAN-W2SC can obtain improved speech quality and intelligibility compared with dynamic-time-warping-based methods.

CycleGAN with Dual Adversarial Loss for Bone-Conducted Speech Enhancement

Compared with air-conducted speech, bone-conducted speech has the unique advantage of shielding background noise. Enhancement of bone-conducted speech helps to improve its quality and intelligibility. In this paper, a novel CycleGAN with dual adversarial loss (CycleGAN-DAL) is proposed for bone-conducted speech enhancement. The proposed method uses an adversarial loss and a cycle-consistent loss simultaneously to learn forward and cyclic mapping, in which the adversarial loss is replaced with the classification adversarial loss and the defect adversarial loss to consolidate the forward mapping. Compared with conventional baseline methods, it can learn feature mapping between bone-conducted speech and target speech without additional air-conducted speech assistance. Moreover, the proposed method also avoids the oversmooth problem which is occurred commonly in conventional statistical based models. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms baseline methods such as CycleGAN, GMM, and BLSTM. Keywords: Bone-conducted speech enhancement, dual adversarial loss, Parallel CycleGAN, high frequency speech reconstruction

Topological 1D Gravity, KP Hierarchy, and Orbifold Euler Characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$

In this work we study the tau-function $Z^{1D}$ of the KP hierarchy specified by the topological 1D gravity. As an application, we present two types of algorithms to compute the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$. The first is to use (fat or thin) topological recursion formulas emerging from the Virasoro constraints for $Z^{1D}$; and the second is to use a formula for the connected $n$-point functions of a KP tau-function in terms of its affine coordinates on the Sato Grassmannian. This is a sequel to an earlier work.

Coherence Control of Directional Nonlinear Photocurrent in Spatially Symmetric Systems

The interplay between crystal symmetry and its optical responses is at the heart of tremendous recent advances in light-matter interactions and applications. Nonlinear optical processes that produce electric currents, for example bulk photovoltaic (BPV) effect, require inversion symmetry broken materials, such as ferroelectrics. In the current work, we demonstrate that such BPV current could be generated in centrosymmetric materials with excitation of out-of-equilibrium coherent phonons. This is much different from the generally studied static or thermally excited states. We show that depending on the oscillating phase factor of the coherent phonon, uni-directional static electric current can be observed, in addition to some terahertz alternating currents. We also generalize the conventional injection charge current into angular momentum (spin and orbital) degrees of freedom, and demonstrate spin and orbital BPV photocurrents under coherent phonons. Our findings open the pathway to exploring the exotic phonon-photon-electron coherent interactions in quantum materials.

Orbifold Euler Characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$

We solve the problem of the computation of the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\Mbar_{g,n}$. We take the works of Harer-Zagier \cite{hz} and Bini-Harer \cite{bh} as our starting point, and apply the formalisms developed in \cite{wz} and \cite{zhou1} to this problem. These formalisms are typical examples of mathematical methods inspired by quantum field theories. We also present many closed formulas and some numerical data. In genus zero the results are related to Ramanujan polynomials, and in higher genera we get recursion relations almost identical to the recursion relations for Ramanujan polynomials but with different initial values. We also show that the generating series given by the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ is the logarithm of the KP tau-function of the topological 1D gravity evaluated at the times given by the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$. Conversely, the logarithm of this tau-function evaluated at the times given by certain generating series of the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$ is a generating series of the orbifold Euler characteristics of $\overline{\mathcal M}_{g,n}$. This is a new example of open-closed duality.
