Thermodynamic bounds and general properties of optimal efficiency and power in linear responses

We study the optimal exergy efficiency and power for thermodynamic systems with Onsager-type "current-force" relationship describing the linear-response to external influences. We derive, in simple analytic forms, the maximum efficiency and optimal efficiency for maximum power for a thermodynamic machine described by a $N\times N$ symmetric Onsager matrix with arbitrary $N$. The figure of merit is expressed in terms of the largest eigenvalue of the "coupling matrix" which is solely determined by the Onsager matrix. Some simple but general relationships between the power and efficiency at the conditions for (i) maximum efficiency and (ii) optimal efficiency for maximum power are obtained. We show how the second law of thermodynamics bounds the optimal efficiency and the Onsager matrix, and relate those bounds together. The maximum power theorem (Jacobi's Law) is generalized to all thermodynamic machines in the linear-response regime. We also discuss systems with asymmetric Onsager matrix (such as systems under magnetic field) where the reversible limit of efficiency can be reached at finite output power. Cooperative effects are found to improve the figure of merit significantly in systems with multiply cross-correlated responses. Application to example systems demonstrates that the theory is helpful in guiding the search for high performance materials and structures in energy researches.

Photonic Crystal Architecture for Room Temperature Equilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensation of Exciton-Polaritons

We describe photonic crystal microcavities with very strong light-matter interaction to realize room-temperature, equilibrium, exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). This is achieved through a careful balance between strong light-trapping in a photonic band gap (PBG) and large exciton density enabled by a multiple quantum-well (QW) structure with moderate dielectric constant. This enables the formation of long-lived, dense 10~$μ$m - 1~cm scale cloud of exciton-polaritons with vacuum Rabi splitting (VRS) that is roughly 7\% of the bare exciton recombination energy. We introduce a woodpile photonic crystal made of Cd$_{0.6}$Mg$_{0.4}$Te with a 3D PBG of 9.2\% (gap to central frequency ratio) that strongly focuses a planar guided optical field on CdTe QWs in the cavity. For 3~nm QWs with 5~nm barrier width the exciton-photon coupling can be as large as $\hbar\Ome=$55~meV (i.e., vacuum Rabi splitting $2\hbar\Ome=$110~meV). The exciton recombination energy of 1.65~eV corresponds to an optical wavelength of 750~nm. For $N=$106 QWs embedded in the cavity the collective exciton-photon coupling per QW, $\hbar\Ome/\sqrt{N}=5.4$~meV, is much larger than state-of-the-art value of 3.3~meV, for CdTe Fabry-Pérot microcavity. The maximum BEC temperature is limited by the depth of the dispersion minimum for the lower polariton branch, over which the polariton has a small effective mass $\sim 10^{-5}m_0$ where $m_0$ is the electron mass in vacuum. By detuning the bare exciton recombination energy above the planar guided optical mode, a larger dispersion depth is achieved, enabling room-temperature BEC.

Photonic Architectures for Equilibrium High-Temperature Bose-Einstein Condensation in Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Semiconductor-microcavity polaritons are composite quasiparticles of excitons and photons, emerging in the strong coupling regime. As quantum superpositions of matter and light, polaritons have much stronger interparticle interactions compared with photons, enabling rapid equilibration and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Current realizations based on 1D photonic structures, such as Fabry-Pérot microcavities, have limited light-trapping ability resulting in picosecond polariton lifetime. We demonstrate, theoretically, above-room-temperature (up to 590 K) BEC of long-lived polaritons in MoSe$_2$ monolayers sandwiched by simple TiO$_2$ based 3D photonic band gap (PBG) materials. The 3D PBG induces very strong coupling of 40 meV (Rabi splitting of 62 meV) for as few as three dichalcogenide monolayers. Strong light-trapping in the 3D PBG enables the long-lived polariton superfluid to be robust against fabrication-induced disorder and exciton line-broadening.

Three-terminal semiconductor junction thermoelectric devices: improving performance

A three-terminal thermoelectric device based on a $p$-$i$-$n$ semiconductor junction is proposed, where the intrinsic region is mounted onto a, typically bosonic, thermal terminal. Remarkably, the figure of merit of the device is governed also by the energy distribution of the {\em bosons} participating in the transport processes, in addition to the electronic one. An enhanced figure of merit can be obtained when the relevant distribution is narrow and the electron-boson coupling is strong (such as for optical phonons). We study the conditions for which the figure of merit of the three-terminal junction can be greater than those of the usual thermoelectric devices made of the same material. A possible setup with a high figure of merit, based on Bi$_2$Te$_3$/Si superlattices, is proposed.

Non-Abelian toplogical superconductors from topological semimetals and related systems under superconducting proximity effect

Non-Abelian toplogical superconductors are characterized by the existence of {zero-energy} Majorana fermions bound in the quantized vortices. This is a consequence of the nontrivial bulk topology characterized by an {\em odd} Chern number. It is found that in topological semimetals with a single two-bands crossing point all the gapped superconductors are non-Abelian ones. Such a property is generalized to related but more generic systems which will be useful in the search of non-Abelian superconductors and Majorana fermions.

Tunable topological Weyl semimetal from simple cubic lattices with staggered fluxes

Three-dimensional Weyl fermions are found to emerge from simple cubic lattices with staggered fluxes. The mechanism is to gap the quadratic band touching by time-reversal-symmetry-breaking hoppings. The system exhibits rich phase diagrams where the number of Weyl fermions and their topological charge are tunable via the plaquette fluxes. The Weyl semimetal state is shown to be the intermediate phase between non-topological semimetal and quantum anomalous Hall insulator. The transitions between those phases can be understood through the evolution of the Weyl points as Berry flux insertion processes. As the Weyl points move and split (or merge) through tuning the plaquette fluxes, the Fermi arcs and surface states undergo significant manipulation. We also propose a possible scheme to realize the model in ultracold fermions in optical lattices with artificial gauge fields.

Thermoelectric three-terminal hopping transport through one-dimensional nanosystems

A two-site nanostructure (e.g, a "molecule") bridging two conducting leads and connected to a phonon bath is considered. The two relevant levels closest to the Fermi energy are connected each to its lead. The leads have slightly different temperatures and chemical potentials and the nanos- tructure is also coupled to a thermal (third) phonon bath. The 3 x 3 linear transport ("Onsager") matrix is evaluated, along with the ensuing new figure of merit, and found to be very favorable for thermoelectric energy conversion.

Emergence of triplet orbital pairing and non-Abelian states in ultracold multi-orbital optical lattices with quadratic band touching

It is found that all the {\em singlet orbital pairing} instabilities are {\em absent} in a class of spin-polarized multi-orbital systems with quadratic band touching, which opens the way for {\em triplet orbital pairing} order. The ground states are found to be {\em non-Abelian} states with p-wave orbital pairing in checkerboard (away from 1/2 filling) and kagome (above 1/3 filling) lattices with {\em isotropic} attractive interaction which can be realized in ultracold multi-orbital optical lattices. The special property of such systems is generalized to more classes of multi-orbital systems, where the fully-gapped {\em non-Abelian} states are possibly the ground states. Those findings are helpful in achieving topological quantum computation.

Spin Susceptibility and Helical Magnetic Orders at the Edges/Surfaces of Topological Insulators Due to Fermi Surface Nesting

We study spin susceptibility and magnetic order at the edges/surfaces of two-dimensional and three-dimensional topological insulators when the Fermi surface is nested. We find that due to spin-momentum locking as well as time-reversal symmetry, spin susceptibility at the nesting wavevector has a strong {\em helical} feature. It follows then, a {\em helical} spin density wave (SDW) state emerges at low temperature due to Fermi surface nesting. The helical feature of spin susceptibility also has profound impact on the magnetic order in magnetically doped surface of three dimensional topological insulators. In such system, from the mean field Zener theory, we predict a {\em helical} magnetic order.
