Functional renormalization group study of superconductivity in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Using functional renormalization group we investigated possible superconductivity in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. In the electron doped case, a $d^*_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting phase is found in a narrow doping region. The pairing is driven by spin fluctuations within the single conduction band. In contrast, for hole doping an $s^*_{\pm}$-wave phase is established, triggered by spin fluctuations within and across the two conduction bands. In all cases there are comparable singlet and triplet components in the pairing function. The Hund's rule coupling reduces (enhances) superconductivity for electron (hole) doping. Our results imply that hole doping is more promising to achieve a higher transition temperature. Experimental perspectives are discussed.

Superconductivity, charge- or spin-density wave, and metal-nonmetal transition in BaTi$_{2}$(Sb$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$)$_{2}$O

We have performed an isovalent substitution study in a layered titanium oxypnictide system BaTi$_{2}$(Sb$_{1-x}$Bi$_{x}$)$_{2}$O (0$\leq x\leq$ 0.40) by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The parent compound BaTi$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$O is confirmed to exhibit superconductivity at 1.5 K as well as charge- or spin-density wave (CDW/SDW) ordering below 55 K. With the partial substitution of Sb by Bi, the lattice parameters $a$, $c$ and $c/a$ all increase monotonically, indicating negative chemical pressure and lattice distortion on the (super)conducting Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O-layers. The Bi doping elevates the superconducting transition temperature to its maximum $T_c$=3.7 K at $x=$0.17, and then $T_c$ decreases gradually with additional Bi doping. A metal-to-nonmetal transition takes place around $x$=0.3, and superconductivity at $\sim$1K exists at the nonmetal side. The CDW/SDW anomaly, in comparison, is rapidly suppressed by the Bi doping, and vanishes for $x\geq$0.17. The results are discussed in terms of negative chemical pressure and disorder effect.

Entanglement and quantum phase transition in quantum mixed spin chains

The ground entanglement and thermal entanglement in quantum mixed spin chains consisting of two integer spins 1 and two half integer spins 1/2 arrayed as ${1/2}-{1/2}-1-1$ in a unit cell with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor couplings $J_1$($J_2$) between the spins of equal (different) magnitudes, are investigated by adopting the log-negativity. The ground entanglement transition found here is closely related with the valence bond state transition, and the thermal entanglement near the critical point is calculated and shown that two distinct behaviors exist in the nearest neighbor same kind of spins and different kind of spins, respectively. The potential application of our results on the quantum information processing is also discussed.

Gauge field theory of transport and magnetic relaxation in underdoped cuprates

Based on recently proposed U(1)xSU(2) Chern-Simons gauge field theory, an interpretation of the transport and magnetic relaxation properties of underdoped cuprates is proposed, taking into account the short range antiferromagnetic order. The interplay of the doping-dependent spin gap (explicitly derived by us) effect and dissipation due to gauge fluctuations gives rise to a crossover from metallic to insulating behavior of conductivity as temperature decreases, in semi-quantitative agreement with experimental data. For the same reason the magnetic relaxation rate shows a maximum nearby. Various crossover temperatures related to spin gap effects are shown to be different manifestations of the same energy scale.

Enhancement of pair correlation in a one-dimensional hybridization model

We propose an integrable model of one-dimensional (1D) interacting electrons coupled with the local orbitals arrayed periodically in the chain. Since the local orbitals are introduced in a way that double occupation is forbidden, the model keeps the main feature of the periodic Anderson model with an interacting host. For the attractive interaction, it is found that the local orbitals enhance the effective mass of the Cooper-pair-like singlets and also the pair correlation in the ground state. However, the persistent current is depressed in this case. For the repulsive interaction case, the Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian but allows Cooper pair solutions with small momenta, which are induced by the hybridization between the extended state and the local orbitals.

Ghost spins and novel quantum critical behavior in a spin chain with local bond-deformation

We study the boundary impurity-induced critical behavior in an integrable SU(2)-invariant model consisting of an open Heisenberg chain of arbitrary spin-$S$ (Takhatajian-Babujian model) interacting with an impurity of spin $\vec{S'}$ located at one of the boundaries. For $S=1/2$ or $S'=1/2$, the impurity interaction has a very simple form $J\vec{S}_1\cdot\vec{S'}$ which describes the deformed boundary bond between the impurity $\vec{S'}$ and the first bulk spin $\vec{S}_1$ with an arbitrary strength $J$. With a weak coupling $0 S'$ and $S<S'$ as in the usual Kondo problem. While for strong coupling $J\geq J_0/[(S+S')^2-1/4]$, the impurity spin is split into two ghost spins. Their cooperative effect leads to a variety of new critical behaviors with different values of $|S'-S|$.

$δ$-function spin-1/2 fermions in a one-dimensional potential well

The quantum-mechanical problem of $N$ fermions with $δ$-function interaction in a one-dimensional potential well of finite depth is solved. It is shown that there exists exact wave function of Bethe-ansatz form in the case that a single particle tunnels outside of the well. The Bethe-ansatz like secular equations for the spectrum are obtained.
