Probing direct $CP$ violation in $Λ_b^0 \to P_c^+ h^-$ $(h=π,K)$ with final-state rescattering

The LHCb Collaboration recently reported a measurement of the difference in direct CP asymmetries for the decays $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψ\, p \, h^-$ (with $h = K, π$), offering new experimental constraints on the decay dynamics of heavy baryons into charmonium final states. Inspired by these findings, we explore the branching ratios and direct CP violations for the decays $Λ_b^0 \to P_c^+(4312, 4440, 4457)\,h^-$ within the framework of final-state rescattering. Our analysis indicates that the branching fractions for $Λ_b^0 \to P_c^+ π^-$ lie around the $10^{-6}$ level, with the corresponding direct CP asymmetries approaching approximately $1\%$. In contrast, the direct CP violation for the decay $Λ_b^0 \to P_c^+ K^-$ is found to be very small, while its branching ratios show a strong dependence on the spin assignments of the $P_c$ states. These predictions may provide useful guidance for more precise CP measurements and amplitude analyses in the $P_c$ region in future experiments.

Final-state rescattering in $\bar{B}^{0}_{(s)}\to Λ^{+}_{c}\barΛ^{-}_{c}$ decays

The LHCb Collaboration has recently reported the first observation of the decay $\bar B_s^0\to Λ_c^+\barΛ_c^-$, along with measurements of the branching fractions for both $\bar B^0\to Λ_c^+\barΛ_c^-$ and $\bar B_s^0\to Λ_c^+\barΛ_c^-$. In this work, we investigate these two decays within the framework of final state re-scattering. Our results show that the predicted branching fractions are consistent with the experimental measurements, indicating the significant role of long-distance final-state interactions in such baryonic B decays. Furthermore, we present predictions for the direct CP asymmetries and the asymmetry parameters. Numerically, both decays exhibit nearly vanishing CP asymmetries, while $\bar B^0\to Λ_c^+\barΛ_c^-$ displays a sizable longitudinal polarization, providing a sensitive observable for testing our theoretical framework in future experimental measurements.

$CP$ violation in two-body hadronic $Λ_b$ decays in the PQCD approach

We systematically investigate the $CP$-averaged branching ratios and $CP$ violations (CPVs) for the two-body hadronic decays $Λ_b\to ph$, where $h$ runs through the mesons $π^-$, $ρ^-$, $a_1^-(1260)$, $K^-$, $K^{\ast -}$, $K_1^-(1270)$ and $K_1^-(1400)$, in the perturbative QCD approach to order $α_s^2$ in the strong coupling. Various topological amplitudes are obtained by incorporating subleading-twist hadron distribution amplitudes, which exhibit reasonable hierarchical patterns, sizable strong phases, and non-negligible higher-power corrections. The predicted direct CPVs in $Λ_b\to pπ^-,pK^-$, different from those in similar $B$ meson decays, are as small as the current data. The low CPV in $Λ_b\to pπ^-$ results from the cancellation between the $S$- and $P$-wave CPVs, while the one in $Λ_b\to pK^-$ is determined by the tiny $S$-wave CPV. However, individual partial-wave CPVs can exceed $10\%$, consistent with direct CPVs in $B$ meson decays. The CPVs in the $Λ_b\to pK_1^-(1270),pK_1^-(1400)$ channels are relatively larger. In particular, CPVs above $20\%$ appear in the up-down asymmetries associated with the final-state angular distributions of $Λ_b\to pK_1^-(1270),pK_1^-(1400)$, followed by the secondary $K_1\to Kππ$ decays. These observables offer promising prospects for firmly establishing baryon CPVs. The decay asymmetry parameters of $Λ_b\to ph$ are also predicted for future experimental confrontations.

Final-state rescattering mechanism in bottom-baryon decays

The first observation of $CP$ violation in baryon decays was recently reported by the LHCb collaboration in $Λ_b^0\to pK^-π^+π^-$ with $A_{CP} = (2.45 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.10)\%$, which inspires the study on baryon non-leptonic decays. In this work, we perform the first calculation of five exclusive non-leptonic decays, $Λ^{0}_{b}\to pπ^{-}, p K^{-},pρ^{-},pK^{*-}$ and $Λϕ$, within the re-scattering approach. The triangle diagrams at hadron level are calculated in form of loop integrations. It leads to the generation of strong phases, which is essential to the calculation of $CP$ asymmetries. We present numerical results for branching ratios, direct and partial-wave $CP$ asymmetries, decay asymmetry parameters and their associated $CP$ asymmetries. Our results are consistent with the current LHCb experimental data, which indicates the validity and potential of our approach in studying the $CP$ asymmetries of $b$-baryon decays. Most of our results are expected to be tested in future experiments.

Establishing CP Violation in $b$-Baryon Decays

It is a long-standing puzzle why the {\it CP} violation (CPV) in the baryon system has not yet been definitively established as in the meson one. We demonstrate that individual partial-wave CPV in the $Λ_b\to pπ^-$ and $pK^-$ decays can exceed $10\%$, but the destruction between the partial waves (the suppression by the small partial-wave weight) results in a small net direct CPV in the former (the latter) as measured currently. Our finding highlights the different dynamics responsible for CPVs in baryon and meson decays. We propose to probe the CPV observables associated with the angular distributions of the $Λ_b\to pa_1(1260)$, $pK_1(1270)$ decay products, which are large enough for being identified experimentally.

CP violation observables in baryon decays

The era of baryon physics is on the horizon with the accumulation of increasing data by collaborations such as LHCb, Belle II, and BESIII. Despite the wealth of data, one of the critical issues in flavor physics, namely CP violation in baryon decays, still awaits experimental confirmation. It is evident that the development of formulas and phenomenological analyses will play a pivotal role in advancing theoretical investigations and experimental measurements in this domain. In this work, we discuss the fundamental definitions and properties of polarization, asymmetry parameters and their associated CP violating observables that may arise in baryon decays. Additionally, we provide a detailed analysis of b-baryon quasi-two and -three body decays based on angular distributions. We highlight the significance of CP asymmetries defined by spin and momentum correlations, as non-trivial spin distributions are expected in baryon decays due to their non-zero polarization in productions and decays. Of particular importance is a complementary relation can be establised for two different types of observables, that are $\mathcal{T}$-even and -odd CP asymmetries respectively. The complementarity indicates that one observable exhibits the sine dependence on strong phase $Δδ$, while another exhibits as cosine. This gives us an distinctive opportunity to avoid the potential large suppression to CP asymmetries from small phase $Δδ$. Two points (\textbf{i}) the exact proof of strong phase dependence behaviour, and (\textbf{ii}) the criterion for complementary observables are clarified. Based on these arguments from theoretical aside, some brief discussions and suggestions on experimental measurements are offered in the final discussions. Lastly, we present a pedagogical introduction to angular distribution techniques based on helicity descriptions for both two and three body decays.

Final-state rescattering mechanism of charmed baryon decays

The dynamical studies on the non-leptonic weak decays of charmed baryons are always challenging, due to the large non-perturbative contributions at the charm scale. In this work, we develop the final-state rescattering mechanism to study the two-body non-leptonic decays of charmed baryons. The final-state interaction is a physical picture of long-distance effects. Instead of using the Cutkosky rule to calculate the hadronic triangle diagrams which can only provide the imaginary part of decay amplitudes, we point out that the loop integral is more appropriate, as both the real parts and the imaginary parts of amplitudes can be calculated completely. In this way, it can be obtained for the non-trivial strong phases which are essential to calculate CP violations. With the physical picture of long-distance effects and the reasonable method of calculations, it is amazingly achieved that all the nine existing experimental data of branching fractions for the $Λ_c^+$ decays into an octet light baryon and a vector meson can be explained by only one parameter of the model. Besides, the decay asymmetries and CP violations are not sensitive to the model parameter, since the dependence on the parameter is mainly cancelled in the ratios, so that the theoretical uncertainties on these observables are lowered down.

CP Violation of Baryon Decays with $Nπ$ Scatterings

There is a long-standing puzzle that the CP violation (CPV) in the baryon systems has never been well established in experiments, while the CPV of mesons have been observed by decades. In this paper, we propose that the CPV of baryon decays can be generated with the rescatterings of a nucleon and a pion into some final states, i.e. $Nπ\to Nπ$ or $Nππ$. Benefited by the fruitful data of $Nπ$ scatterings, we can model-independently analyse the strong phases of $b$-baryon decays using the partial wave amplitudes of $Nπ$ scatterings. Avoiding the most difficult problem of non-perturbative dynamics, it makes a great advantage to predict the CPV of baryon decays with a relatively reliable understanding of the decay dynamics. We study the processes of $Λ_b^0\to (pπ^+π^-)h^-$ and $(pπ^0)h^-$ with $h=π$ or $K$. It is found that the global CPV of the above processes in the invariant mass regions of $Nπ$ scatterings are at the order of several percent. More importantly, the local CPV in some regions of the Dalitz plots can reach the order of $10\%$, or be even larger. Considering the predicted results and the experimental data samples, we strong suggest to measure the CPV of $Λ_b^0\to (pπ^+π^-)K^-$, which has a large possibility to achieve the first observation of CPV in the baryon system.

Complementary $CP$ violation induced by $T$-odd and $T$-even correlations

In this letter, we propose a novel approach to concurrently measure the complementary $CP$ violation observables induced by $T$-odd correlations and their corresponding $T$-even counterparts, where $T$ represents time reversal. Our analysis demonstrates that $T$-odd and -even correlations, when satisfying specific conditions, result in cosine and sine strong phase dependencies of the corresponding $CP$ violation, respectively. Additionally, we identify pairs of these $CP$ violation observables in hadron decays depend on precisely the same strong phases within the helicity amplitude scheme. This complementarity effectively reduces the strong phase reliance in the study of $CP$ violation, while also mitigating the risk of suppressed $CP$ violation due to exceptionally small strong phases. Furthermore, our proposal holds potential for uncovering $CP$ violation in baryon decays that have not yet been observed in experiments.

Possible large CP violation in charmed $Λ_b$ decays

We propose that the cascade decay $Λ_b \to D(\to K^+π^-) N(\to pπ^-)$ may serve as the discovery channel for baryonic CP violation. This decay chain is contributed by, dominantly, the amplitudes with the intermediate $D$ state as $D^0$ or $\bar{D}^0$. The large weak phase between the two kinds of amplitudes suggests the possibility of significant CP violation. While the presence of undetermined strong phases may complicate the dependence of CP asymmetry, our phenomenological analysis demonstrates that CP violation remains prominent across a broad range of strong phases. The mechanism also applies to similar decay modes such as $Λ_b \rightarrow D(\rightarrow K^+ K^-) Λ$. Considering the anticipated luminosity of LHCb, we conclude that these decay channels offer a promising opportunity to uncover CP violation in the baryon sector.

Probing hyperon electric dipole moments with a full angular analysis

The electric dipole moment (EDM) of elementary particles, arising from flavor-diagonal $CP$ violation, serves as a powerful probe for new physics beyond the Standard Model and holds the potential to provide novel insights in unraveling the puzzle of the matter-dominated Universe. Hyperon EDM is a largely unexplored territory. In this paper, we present a comprehensive angular analysis that focuses on entangled hyperon-antihyperon pairs in $J/ψ$ decays for the indirect extraction of hyperon EDM. The statistical sensitivities are investigated for BESIII and the proposed Super Tau-Charm Facility (STCF). Leveraging the statistics from the BESIII experiment, the estimated sensitivity for $Λ$ EDM can reach an impressive level of $10^{-19}$ $e$ cm, achieving a 3-orders-of-magnitude improvement over the only existing measurement in a fixed-target experiment at Fermilab with similar statistics. The estimated sensitivities for the $Σ^+$, $Ξ^-$, and $Ξ^0$ hyperons at the same level of $10^{-19}$ $e$ cm will mark the first-ever achievement and the latter two will be the first exploration of hyperons with two strange valence quarks. The EDM measurements for hyperons conducted at the BESIII experiment will be a significant milestone and serve as a litmus test for new physics such as supersymmetry and the left-right symmetrical model. Furthermore, at the STCF experiment, the sensitivity of hyperon EDM measurements can be further enhanced by 2 orders of magnitude. Additionally, this angular analysis enables the determination of $CP$ violation in hyperon decays, the effective weak mixing angle, and beam polarization.

Probing hyperon CP violation from charmed baryon decays

CP violation (CPV) in the baryon sectors has not yet been established experimentally. In this work, we propose to search for the hyperon CPV through the Cabibbo-favored charm-baryon decaying processes involving a hyperon in the final states, such as $Λ_c^+\to Λ^0π^+, Λ^0\to pπ^-$. The CPV of the hyperon decays are purely revealed in these chain processes, since the CPV in the Cabibbo-favored charm decays are vanishing in the Standard Model (SM). The hyperons are polarized in the weak charm decays, so that we can measure the Lee-Yang asymmetric parameter $α$ by the angular distributions, and then can measure the $α$-induced CPV. It can be found that it is accessible for Belle II and LHCb to reach the SM prediction of the hyperon CPV in the near future.

Branching fractions of $B^-\to D^-X_{0,1}(2900)$ and their implications

The exotic states $X_{0,1}(2900)$ with the quark flavor of $cs\bar{u}\bar{d}$ are recently observed in the mass spectrum of $D^+K^-$ in $B^-\to D^-D^+K^-$ by the LHCb collaboration. To explore the nature of $X_{0,1}(2900)$, except for analyzing their masses and decay widths as usually did in literatures, the study of their production mechanism in $B$-meson weak decays would provide another important information. The amplitude of $B^-\to D^- X_{0,1}$ is non-factorizable. We consider the final-state-interaction effects and calculate them via the rescattering mechanism. The measured branching fractions of $B^-\to D^- X_{0,1}$ are revealed. It is manifested by ${B}^-\to Λ_c^-Ξ_c^{(\prime)0}$ and $Λ_b^0\to P_c^+K^-$ that the rescattering mechanism can result in the relatively large branching fractions. The similar processes of $B^-\to π^-X_{0,1}$ are also analyzed. The isospins of $X_{0,1}$ can be investigated by $B\to DX_{0,1}^{\pm,0}$ decays.
