Anomaly freedom in perturbative models of Euclidean loop quantum gravity

Euclidean gravity provides an interesting test system for an analysis of cosmological perturbations in an effective Hamiltonian constraint with holonomy modifications from loop quantum gravity. This paper presents a discussion of scalar modes, with a specific form of the holonomy modification function derived from a general expansion in a connection formulation. Compared with some previous models, the constraint brackets are deformed in a different and more restricted way. A general comparison of anomaly-free brackets in various effective and operator versions shows overall consistency between different approaches.

Holographic transports from Born-Infeld electrodynamics with momentum dissipation

We construct the Einstein-axions AdS black hole from Born-Infeld electrodynamics. Various DC transport coefficients of the dual boundary theory are computed. The DC electric conductivity depends on the temperature, which is a novel property comparing to that in RN-AdS black hole. The DC electric conductivity are positive at zero temperature while the thermal conductivity vanishes, which implies that the dual system is an electrical metal but thermal insulator. The effects of Born-Infeld parameter on the transport coefficients are analyzed. Finally, we study the AC electric conductivity from Born-Infeld electrodynamics with momentum dissipation. For weak momentum dissipation, the low frequency behavior satisfies the standard Drude formula and the electric transport is coherent for various correction parameter. While for stronger momentum dissipation, the modified Drude formula is applied and we observe a crossover from coherent to incoherent phase. Moreover, the Born-Infeld correction amplifies the incoherent behavior. Finally, we study the non-linear conductivity in probe limit and compare our results with those observed in (i)DBI model.

Quasi-normal modes of holographic system with Weyl correction and momentum dissipation

We study the charge response in complex frequency plane and the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of the boundary quantum field theory with momentum dissipation dual to a probe generalized Maxwell system with Weyl correction. When the strength of the momentum dissipation $\hatα$ is small, the pole structure of the conductivity is similar to the case without the momentum dissipation. The qualitative correspondence between the poles of the real part of the conductivity of the original theory and the ones of its electromagnetic (EM) dual theory approximately holds when $γ\rightarrow -γ$ with $γ$ being the Weyl coupling parameter. While the strong momentum dissipation alters the pole structure such that most of the poles locate at the purely imaginary axis. At this moment, the correspondence between the poles of the original theory and its EM dual one is violated when $γ\rightarrow -γ$. In addition, for the dominant pole, the EM duality almost holds when $γ\rightarrow -γ$ for all $\hatα$ except for a small region of $\hatα$.

Weyl corrections to diffusion and chaos in holography

Using holographic methods in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion (EMDA) theory, it was conjectured that the thermal diffusion in a strongly coupled metal without quasi-particles saturates an universal lower bound that is associated with the chaotic property of the system at infrared (IR) fixed points~\cite{blake:1705}. In this paper, we investigate the thermal transport and quantum chaos in the EMDA theory with a small Weyl coupling term. It is found that the Weyl coupling correct the thermal diffusion constant $D_Q$ and butterfly velocity $v_B$ in different ways, hence resulting a modified relation between the two at IR fixed points. Unlike that in the EMDA case, our results show that the ratio $D_Q/ (v_B^2τ_L)$ always contains a {\it non-universal} Weyl correction which depends on the matter fields as long as the $U(1)$ current is relevant in the IR.

The Lifshitz black branes and DC transport coefficients in massive Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity

We construct analytical Lifshitz massive black brane solutions in massive Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity theory. We also study the thermodynamics of these black brane solutions and obtain the thermodynamical stability conditions. On the dual nonrelativistic boundary field theory with Lifshitz symmetry, we analytically compute the DC transport coefficients, including the electric conductivity, thermoelectric conductivity, and thermal conductivity. The novel property of our model is that the massive term supports the Lifshitz black brane solutions with $z\neq 1$ in such a way that the DC transport coefficients in the dual field theory are finite. We also find that the Wiedemann-Franz law in this dual boundary field theory is violated, which indicates that it may involve strong interactions.

Holographic fermionic spectrum with Weyl correction

We study the ferminoic spectrum with Weyl correction, which exhibits the non-Fermi liquid behavior. Also, we find that both the height of the peak of the fermionic spectrum and the dispersion relation exhibit a nonlinearity with the variety of the Weyl coupling parameter $γ$, which mean that such nonlinearity maybe ascribe to the one of the Maxwell field. Another important property of this system is that for the holographic fermionic system with $γ<0$, the degree of the deviation from Fermi liquid is heavier than that for the one with $γ>0$. It indicates that there is a transition of coupling strength in the dual boundary field theory.

Holographic superconductor on a novel insulator

We construct a holographic superconductor model, based on a gravity theory, which exhibits novel metal-insulator transitions. We investigate the condition for the condensation of the scalar field over the parameter space, and then focus on the superconductivity over the insulating phase with a hard gap, which is supposed to be Mott-like. It turns out that the formation of the hard gap in the insulating phase benefits the superconductivity. This phenomenon is analogous to the fact that the pseudogap phase can promote the pre-pairing of electrons in high $T_c$ cuprates. We expect that this work can shed light on understanding the mechanism of high Tc superconductivity from the holographic side.

Holographic Butterfly Effect at Quantum Critical Points

When the Lyapunov exponent $λ_L$ in a quantum chaotic system saturates the bound $λ_L\leqslant 2πk_BT$, it is proposed that this system has a holographic dual described by a gravity theory. In particular, the butterfly effect as a prominent phenomenon of chaos can ubiquitously exist in a black hole system characterized by a shockwave solution near the horizon. In this paper we propose that the butterfly velocity can be used to diagnose quantum phase transition (QPT) in holographic theories. We provide evidences for this proposal with an anisotropic holographic model exhibiting metal-insulator transitions (MIT), in which the derivatives of the butterfly velocity with respect to system parameters characterizes quantum critical points (QCP) with local extremes in zero temperature limit. We also point out that this proposal can be tested by experiments in the light of recent progress on the measurement of out-of-time-order correlation function (OTOC).

Holographic superconductivity from higher derivative theory

We construct a $6$ derivative holographic superconductor model in the $4$-dimensional bulk spacetimes, in which the normal state describes a quantum critical (QC) phase. The phase diagram $(γ_1,\hat{T}_c)$ and the condensation as the function of temperature are worked out numerically. We observe that with the decrease of the coupling parameter $γ_1$, the critical temperature $\hat{T}_c$ decreases and the formation of charged scalar hair becomes harder. We also calculate the optical conductivity. An appealing characteristic is a wider extension of the superconducting energy gap, comparing with that of $4$ derivative theory. It is expected that this phenomena can be observed in the real materials of high temperature superconductor. Also the Homes' law in our present models with $4$ and $6$ derivative corrections is explored. We find that in certain range of parameters $γ$ and $γ_1$, the experimentally measured value of the universal constant $C$ in Homes' law can be obtained.

Holographic fermionic spectrum from Born-Infeld AdS black hole

In this letter, we systematically explore the holographic (non-)relativistic fermionic spectrum without/with dipole coupling dual to Born-Infeld anti-de Sitter (BI-AdS) black hole. For the relativistic fermionic fixed point, this holographic fermionic system exhibits non-Fermi liquid behavior. Also, with the increase of BI parameter $γ$, the non-Fermi liquid becomes even "more non-Fermi". When the dipole coupling term is included, we find that the BI term makes it a lot tougher to form the gap. While for the non-relativistic fermionic system with large dipole coupling in BI-AdS background, with the increase of BI parameter, the gap comes into being against.

Holographic response from higher derivatives with homogeneous disorder

In this letter, we study the charge response from higher derivatives over the background with homogeneous disorder introduced by axions. We first explore the bounds on the higher derivatives coupling from DC conductivity and the anomalies of causality and instabilities. Our results indicate no tighter constraints on the coupling than that over Schwarzschild-AdS (SS-AdS) background. And then we study the optical conductivity of our holographic system. We find that for the case with $γ_1<0$ and the disorder strength $\hatα<2/\sqrt{3}$, there is a crossover from a coherent to incoherent metallic phase as $\hatα$ increases. When $\hatα$ is beyond $\hatα=2/\sqrt{3}$ and further amplified, a peak exhibits again at low frequency. But it cannot be well fitted by the standard Drude formula and new formula for describing this behavior shall be called for. While for the holographic system with the limit of $γ_1\rightarrow 1/48$, the disorder effect drives the hard-gap-like at low frequency into the soft gap and suppresses the pronounced peak at medium frequency.

Thermal transport and quasi-normal modes in Gauss-Bonnet-axions theory

We obtain the black brane solution in arbitrary dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-axions (GBA) gravity theory. And then the thermal conductivity of the boundary theory dual to this neutral black brane is explored. We find that the momentum dissipation suppresses the DC thermal conductivity while it is enhanced by larger GB parameter. The analytical and numerical results of DC thermal conductivity match very well. Also we study the effect of the momentum dissipation and the GB coupling on the AC thermal conductivity and fit the results by Drude-like behavior for low frequency. Finally, we analytical compute the quasi-normal modes (QNM) frequency of the perturbative master field in large dimensions limit. Our analytical QNM frequencies agree well with the numerical results in large enough finite dimensions.

Note on the butterfly effect in holographic superconductor models

In this note we remark that the butterfly effect can be used to diagnose the phase transition of superconductivity in a holographic framework. Specifically, we compute the butterfly velocity in a charged black hole background as well as anisotropic backgrounds with Q-lattice structure. In both cases we find its derivative to the temperature is discontinuous at critical points. We also propose that the butterfly velocity can signalize the occurrence of thermal phase transition in general holographic models.

Holographic Metal-Insulator Transition in Higher Derivative Gravity

We introduce a Weyl term into the Einstein-Maxwell-Axion theory in four dimensional spacetime. Up to the first order of the Weyl coupling parameter $γ$, we construct charged black brane solutions without translational invariance in a perturbative manner. Among all the holographic frameworks involving higher derivative gravity, we are the first to obtain metal-insulator transitions (MIT) when varying the system parameters at zero temperature. Furthermore, we study the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) of strip geometry in this model and find that the second order derivative of HEE with respect to the axion parameter exhibits maximization behavior near quantum critical points (QCPs) of MIT. It testifies the conjecture in 1502.03661 and 1604.04857 that HEE itself or its derivatives can be used to diagnose quantum phase transition (QPT).

Holographic incoherent transport in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton Gravity

Recent progress in the holographic approach makes it more transparent that each conductivity can be decomposed into the coherent contribution due to momentum relaxation and the incoherent contribution due to intrinsic current relaxation. In this paper we investigate this decomposition in the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We derive the perturbation equations, which are decoupled for a large class of background solutions, and then obtain the analytic results of conductivity with the slow momentum relaxation in low frequency approximation, which is consistent with the known results from memory matrix techniques.

Momentum dissipation and holographic transport without self-duality

We implement the momentum dissipation introduced by spatial linear axionic fields in a holographic model without self-duality, broke by Weyl tensor coupling to Maxwell field, and study its response. It is found that for the positive Weyl coupling parameter $γ>0$, the momentum dissipation characterized by parameter $\hatα$ drives the boundary conformal field theory (CFT), in which the conductivity exhibits a peak at low frequency, into the incoherent metallic phase with a dip, which is away from CFT due to the introduction of axionic fields. While for $γ<0$, an oppositive scenario is found. Our present model provides a possible route toward the problem that which sign of $γ$ is the correct description of the CFT of boson Hubbard model. In addition, we also investigate the DC conductivity, diffusion constant and susceptibility. We find that for each of these observables there is a specific value of $\hatα$, for which these observables are independent of $γ$. Finally, the electromagnetic (EM) duality is also studied and we find that there is also a specific value of $\hatα$, for which the particle-vortex duality related by the change of the sign of $γ$ in the boundary theory holds better than for other values of $\hatα$.

Characterization of Quantum Phase Transition using Holographic Entanglement Entropy

The entanglement exhibits extremal or singular behavior near quantum critical points (QCPs) in many condensed matter models. These intriguing phenomena, however, still call for a widely accepted understanding. In this letter we study this issue in holographic framework. We investigate the connection between the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and the quantum phase transition (QPT) in a lattice-deformed Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. Novel backgrounds exhibiting metal-insulator transitions (MIT) have been constructed in which both metallic phase and insulating phase have vanishing entropy density in zero temperature limit. We find that the first order derivative of HEE with respect to lattice parameters exhibits extremal behavior near QCPs. We propose that it would be a universal feature that HEE or its derivatives with respect to system parameters can characterize QPT in a generic holographic system. Our work opens a window for understanding the relation between entanglement and the QPT from holographic perspective.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy Close to Quantum Phase Transitions

We investigate the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) of a strip geometry in four dimensional Q-lattice backgrounds, which exhibit metal-insulator transitions in the dual field theory. Remarkably, we find that the HEE always displays a peak in the vicinity of the quantum critical points. Our model provides the first direct evidence that the HEE can be used to characterize the quantum phase transition (QPT). We also conjecture that the maximization behavior of HEE at quantum critical points would be universal in general holographic models.
