Spontaneous formation of polar superfluid droplets in a p-wave interacting Bose gas

We study the quantum fluctuations in the condensates of a mixture of bosonic atoms and molecules with interspecies p-wave interaction. Our analysis shows that the quantum phase of coexisting atomic and molecular condensates is unstable at the mean-field level. Unlike the mixture of s-wave interaction, the Lee-Huang-Yang correction of p-wave interaction is unexpectedly found here to exhibit an opposite sign with respect to its mean-field term above a critical particle density. This quantum correction to the mean-field energy provides a remarkable mechanism to self-stabilize the phase. The order parameter of this superfluid phase carries opposite finite momenta for the two atomic species while the molecular component is a polar condensate. Such a correlated order spontaneously breaks a rich set of global U(1) gauge, atomic spin, spatial rotation and translation, and time-reversal symmetries. For potential experimental observation, the phenomenon of anisotropic polar superfluid droplets is predicted to occur, when the particle number is kept finite.

Chiral Majorana edge states in the vortex core of a $p+ip$ Fermi superfluid

We study a single vortex in a two-dimensional $p+ip$ Fermi superfluid interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate. The Fermi superfluid is topologically non-trivial and hosts a zero-energy Majorana bound state at the vortex core. Assuming a repulsive $s$-wave contact interaction between fermions and bosons, we find that fermions are depleted from the vortex core when the bosonic density becomes sufficiently large. In this case, a dynamically-driven local interface emerges between fermions and bosons, along which chiral Majorana edge states should appear. We examine in detail the variation of vortex-core structures as well as the formation of chiral Majorana edge states with increasing bosonic density. In particular, when the angular momentum of the vortex matches the chirality of the Fermi superfluid, the Majorana zero mode and normal bound states within the core continuously evolve into chiral Majorana edge states. Otherwise, a first-order transition occurs in the lowest excited state within the core, due to the competition between counter-rotating normal bound states in forming chiral Majorana edge states. Such a transition is manifested as a sharp peak in the excitation gap above the Majorana zero mode, at which point the Majorana zero mode is protected by a large excitation gap.Our study presents an illuminating example on how topological defects can be dynamically controlled in the context of cold atomic gases.

Observation of phonon parametric down-conversion in a spherical Bose-Einstein condensate

We report the observation of parametric down-conversion of phonons in a spherical Bose-Einstein condensate. The spherical symmetry, which is crucial for observing this phenomenon, is experimentally demonstrated by measuring the collective mode and expansion behavior of the condensate. The low-energy monopole mode is excited by coupling with a high-energy mode with a nearly twice eigen-frequency. The population of the low-energy mode becomes maximum only when the high-energy mode is resonantly excited. Furthermore, we directly observe the parametric down-conversion process in the driving process, through simultaneously probing the two coupling modes. The experimental observation is consistent with the perturbation theory including the gravity effect. This work opens the challenge in related study of the condensate beyond mean-field theory and has potential applications in quantum information.

Width of the confinement-induced resonance in a quasi-one-dimensional trap with transverse anisotropy

We theoretically study the width of the s-wave confinement-induced resonance (CIR) in quasi-one-dimensional atomic gases under tunable transversely anisotropic confinement. We find that the width of the CIR can be tuned by varying the transverse anisotropy. The change in the width of the CIR can manifest itself in the position of the discontinuity in the interaction energy density, which can be probed experimentally.

Symmetry-protected topological states for interacting fermions in alkaline-earth-like atoms

We discuss the quantum simulation of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states for interacting fermions in quasi-one-dimensional gases of alkaline-earth-like atoms such as $^{173}$Yb. Taking advantage of the separation of orbital and nuclear-spin degrees of freedom in these atoms, we consider Raman-assisted spin-orbit couplings in the clock states, which, together with the spin-exchange interactions in the clock-state manifolds, give rise to SPT states for interacting fermions. We numerically investigate the phase diagram of the system, and study the phase transitions between the SPT phase and the symmetry-breaking phases. The interaction-driven topological phase transition can be probed by measuring local density distribution of the topological edge modes.

Interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics in a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the interaction-modulated tunneling dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a deep double-well potential, where the tunneling between the two wells is modulated by another BEC trapped in a harmonic potential symmetrically positioned at the center of the double-well potential. The inter-species interactions couple the dynamics of the two BECs, which give rise to interesting features in the tunneling oscillations. Adopting a two-mode approximation for the BEC in the double-well potential and coupling it with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of the harmonically trapped BEC, we numerically investigate the coupled dynamics of the BEC mixture, and map out the phase diagram of the tunneling dynamics. We show that the dynamical back action of the BEC in the harmonic trap leads to strong non-linearity in the oscillations of the BEC in the double-well potential, which enriches the system dynamics, and enhances macroscopic self trapping. The transition between the Josephson oscillation and the self-trapping dynamics can be identified by monitoring the oscillation frequency of the double-well BEC. Our results suggest the possibility of tuning the tunneling dynamics of BECs in double-well potentials.

Interaction-induced exotic vortex states in an optical lattice clock with spin-orbit coupling

Motivated by a recent experiment [L. F. Livi, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 220401(2016)], we study the ground-state properties of interacting fermions in a one-dimensional optical lattice clock with spin-orbit coupling. As the electronic and the hyperfine-spin states in the clock-state manifolds can be treated as effective sites along distinct synthetic dimensions, the system can be considered as multiple two-leg ladders with uniform magnetic flux penetrating the plaquettes of each ladder. As the inter-orbital spin-exchange interactions in the clock-state manifolds couple individual ladders together, we show that exotic interaction-induced vortex states emerge in the coupled-ladder system, which compete with existing phases of decoupled ladders and lead to a rich phase diagram. Adopting the density matrix renormalization group approach, we map out the phase diagram, and investigate in detail the currents and the density-density correlations of the various phases. Our results reveal the impact of interactions on spin-orbit coupled systems, and are particularly relevant to the on-going exploration of spin-orbit coupled optical lattice clocks.

Topological superradiant state in Fermi gases with cavity induced spin-orbit coupling

Coherently driven atomic gases inside optical cavities hold great promise for generating rich dynamics and exotic states of matter. It was shown recently that an exotic topological superradiant state exists in a two-component degenerate Fermi gas coupled to a cavity, where local order parameters coexist with global topological invariants. In this work, we characterize in detail various properties of this exotic state, focusing on the feedback interactions between the atoms and the cavity field. In particular, we demonstrate that cavity-induced interband coupling plays a crucial role in inducing the topological phase transition between the conventional and topological superradiant states. We analyze the interesting signatures in the cavity field left by the closing and reopening of the atomic bulk gap across the topological phase boundary and discuss the robustness of the topological superradiant state by investigating the steady-state phase diagram under various conditions. Furthermore, we consider the interaction effect and discuss the interplay between the pairing order in atomic ensembles and the superradiance of the cavity mode. Our work provides many valuable insights into the unique cavity--atom hybrid system under study and is helpful for future experimental exploration of the topological superradiant state.

Vortex-core structure in a mixture of Bose and Fermi superfluids

We study a single quantized vortex in the fermionic component of a mixture of Fermi superfluid and Bose-Einstein condensate. As the density ratio between the boson and the fermion components is tuned, we identify a transition in the vortex-core structure, across which fermions in the vortex core become completely depleted even in the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime. This is accompanied by changes in key properties of the vortex state, as well as by the localization of the Bose-Einstein condensate in the vortex core. The transition in the vortex-core structure can be experimentally probed in Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures by detecting the size and visibility of the vortices.

Topological Fulde-Ferrell states in alkaline-earth-metal-like atoms near an orbital Feshbach resonance

We study the effects of synthetic spin-orbit coupling on the pairing physics in quasi-one-dimensional ultracold Fermi gases of alkaline-earth-metal-like atoms near an orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR). The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and pairing interactions near the OFR leads to an interesting topological Fulde-Ferrell state, where the nontrivial topology of the state is solely encoded in the closed channel with a topologically trivial Fulde-Ferrell pairing in the open channel. We confirm the topological property of the system by characterizing the Zak phase and the edge states. The topological Fulde-Ferrell state can be identified by the momentum-space density distribution obtained from time-of-flight images.

Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with Raman-assisted two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

In a recent experiment by Wu {\textit et al.} (arXiv:1511.08170), a Raman-assisted two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling has been realized for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice potential. In light of this exciting progress, we study in detail key properties of the system. As the Raman lasers inevitably couple atoms to high-lying bands, the behaviors of the system in both the single- and many-particle sectors are significantly affected. In particular, the high-band effects enhance the plane-wave phase and lead to the emergence of "roton" gaps at low Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we identify high-band-induced topological phase boundaries in both the single-particle and the quasi-particle spectra. We then derive an effective two-band model, which captures the high-band physics in the experimentally relevant regime. Our results not only offer valuable insights into the novel two-dimensional lattice spin-orbit coupling, but also provide a systematic formalism to model high-band effects in lattice systems with Raman-assisted spin-orbit couplings.

Topological superradiance in a degenerate Fermi gas

We predict the existence of a topological superradiant state in a two-component degenerate Fermi gas in a cavity. The superradiant light generation in the transversely driven cavity mode induces a cavity-assisted spin-orbit coupling in the system and opens a bulk gap at half-filling. This mechanism can simultaneously drive a topological phase transition in the system, yielding a topological superradiant phase. We map out the steady-state phase diagram of the system in the presence of an effective Zeeman field, and identify a critical quadracritical point beyond which the topological and the conventional superraidiant phase boundaries separate. We also propose to detect the topological phase transitions based on the unique signatures in the momentum-space density distribution.

Storing High-Dimensional Quantum States in a Cold Atomic Ensemble

The reversible transfer of the quantum information between a photon, an information carrier, and a quantum memory with high fidelity and reliability is the prerequisite for realizing a long-distance quantum communication and a quantum network. Encoding photons into higher-dimensional states could significantly increase their information-carrying capability and network capacity. Moreover, the large-alphabet quantum key distribution affords a more secure flux of information. Quantum memories have been realized in different physical systems, such as atomic ensembles and solid systems etc., but to date, all quantum memories only realize the storage and retrieval of the photons lived in a two-dimensional space spanned for example by orthogonal polarizations, therefore only a quantum bit could be stored there. Here, we report on the first experimental realization of a quantum memory storing a photon lived in a three-dimensional space spanned by orbital angular momentums via electromagnetically induced transparency in a cold atomic ensemble. We reconstruct the storage process density matrix with the fidelity of 85.3% by the aid of a 4-f imaging system experimentally. The ability to store a high-dimensional quantum state with high fidelity is very promising for building a high-dimensional quantum network.
