Observation of the Hopf Links and Hopf Fibration in a 2D topological Raman Lattice

A dynamical Hopf insulator is experimentally synthesized with a quenched two-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall system on a square Raman lattice. The quench dynamics for the quasimomentum-time-dependent Bloch vectors defines a Hopf map from $(q_x,q_y,t)\in T^3$ to the Bloch sphere $S^2$. In this Hopf map, a dynamical Hopf number can be defined, and it exactly equals the Chern number of the post-quench Hamiltonian. We experimentally measure the Hopf link between the fibers for the North and South Poles on $S^2$, which are the trajectories in $(q_x,q_y,t)$ space with maximal spin polarization, to extract the topological Chern number of the post-quench Hamiltonian. We also observe the structure of Hopf fibration for the mutually nested Hopf tori. Our study sheds some new light on the interplay between topology (Hopf number) and geometry (fiber bundle) in quantum dynamics.

Experimental Gaussian Boson Sampling

Gaussian Boson sampling (GBS) provides a highly efficient approach to make use of squeezed states from parametric down-conversion to solve a classically hard-to-solve sampling problem. The GBS protocol not only significantly enhances the photon generation probability, compared to standard boson sampling with single photon Fock states, but also links to potential applications such as dense subgraph problems and molecular vibronic spectra. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of GBS using squeezed-state sources with simultaneously high photon indistinguishability and collection efficiency. We implement and validate 3-, 4- and 5-photon GBS with high sampling rates of 832 kHz, 163 kHz and 23 kHz, respectively, which is more than 4.4, 12.0, and 29.5 times faster than the previous experiments. Further, we observe a quantum speed-up on a NP-hard optimization problem when comparing with simulated thermal sampler and uniform sampler.

Coherently driving a single quantum two-level system with dichromatic laser pulses

Efficient excitation of a single two-level system usually requires that the driving field is at the same frequency as the atomic transition. However, the scattered laser light in solid-state implementations can dominate over the single photons, imposing an outstanding challenge to perfect single-photon sources. Here, we propose a background-free method using a phase-locked dichromatic electromagnetic field with no spectral overlap with the optical transition for a coherent control of a two-level system, and we demonstrate this method experimentally with a single quantum dot embedded in a micropillar. Single photons generated by pi excitation show a purity of 0.988(1) and indistinguishability of 0.962(6). Further, the phase-coherent nature of the two-color excitation is captured by the resonance-fluorescence intensity dependence on the relative phase between the two pulses. Our two-color excitation method adds a useful toolbox to the study of atom-photon interaction, and the generation of spectrally isolated indistinguishable single photons.

Experimental demonstration of high-rate measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution over asymmetric channels

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) can eliminate all detector side channels and it is practical with current technology. Previous implementations of MDI-QKD all use two symmetric channels with similar losses. However, the secret key rate is severely limited when different channels have different losses. Here we report the results of the first high-rate MDI-QKD experiment over $asymmetric$ channels. By using the recent 7-intensity optimization approach, we demonstrate $>$10x higher key rate than previous best-known protocols for MDI-QKD in the situation of large channel asymmetry, and extend the secure transmission distance by more than 20-50 km in standard telecom fiber. The results have moved MDI-QKD towards widespread applications in practical network settings, where the channel losses are asymmetric and user nodes could be dynamically added or deleted.

Single-photon computational 3D imaging at 45 km

Long-range active imaging has a variety of applications in remote sensing and target recognition. Single-photon LiDAR (light detection and ranging) offers single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution, which is desirable for high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging over long distances. Despite important progress, further extending the imaging range presents enormous challenges because only weak echo photons return and are mixed with strong noise. Herein, we tackled these challenges by constructing a high-efficiency, low-noise confocal single-photon LiDAR system, and developing a long-range-tailored computational algorithm that provides high photon efficiency and super-resolution in the transverse domain. Using this technique, we experimentally demonstrated active single-photon 3D-imaging at a distance of up to 45 km in an urban environment, with a low return-signal level of $\sim$1 photon per pixel. Our system is feasible for imaging at a few hundreds of kilometers by refining the setup, and thus represents a significant milestone towards rapid, low-power, and high-resolution LiDAR over extra-long ranges.

Efficient Online Quantum Generative Adversarial Learning Algorithms with Applications

The exploration of quantum algorithms that possess quantum advantages is a central topic in quantum computation and quantum information processing. One potential candidate in this area is quantum generative adversarial learning (QuGAL), which conceptually has exponential advantages over classical adversarial networks. However, the corresponding learning algorithm remains obscured. In this paper, we propose the first quantum generative adversarial learning algorithm-- the quantum multiplicative matrix weight algorithm (QMMW)-- which enables the efficient processing of fundamental tasks. The computational complexity of QMMW is polynomially proportional to the number of training rounds and logarithmically proportional to the input size. The core concept of the proposed algorithm combines QuGAL with online learning. We exploit the implementation of QuGAL with parameterized quantum circuits, and numerical experiments for the task of entanglement test for pure state are provided to support our claims.

We derive a state dependent error-disturbance trade-off based on a statistical distance in the sequential measurements of a pair of noncommutative observables and experimentally verify the relation with a photonic qubit system. We anticipate that this Letter may further stimulate the study on the quantum uncertainty principle and related applications in quantum measurements.

Semi-Deterministic Entanglement between a Single Photon and an Atomic Ensemble

Entanglement between a single photon and a matter qubit is an indispensable resource for quantum repeater and quantum networks. With atomic ensembles, the entanglement creation probability is typically very low to inhibit high-order events. In this paper, we propose and experimentally realize a scheme which creates atom-photon entanglement with an intrinsic efficiency of 50%. We make use of Rydberg blockade to generate two collective excitations, lying in separate internal states. By introducing the momentum degree of freedom for the excitations, and interfering them via Raman coupling, we entangle the two excitations. Via retrieving one excitation, we create the entanglement between the polarization of a single photon and the momentum of the remaining atomic excitation, with a measured fidelity of 0.901(8). The retrieved optical field is verified to be genuine single photons. The realized entanglement may be employed to create entanglement between two distant nodes in a fully heralded way and with a much higher efficiency.

Experimental Quantum Switching for Exponentially Superior Quantum Communication Complexity

Finding exponential separation between quantum and classical information tasks is like striking gold in quantum information research. Such an advantage is believed to hold for quantum computing but is proven for quantum communication complexity. Recently, a novel quantum resource called the quantum switch---which creates a coherent superposition of the causal order of events, known as quantum causality---has been harnessed theoretically in a new protocol providing provable exponential separation. We experimentally demonstrate such an advantage by realizing a superposition of communication directions for a two-party distributed computation. Our photonic demonstration employs $d$-dimensional quantum systems, qudits, up to $d=2^{13}$ dimensions and demonstrates a communication complexity advantage, requiring less than $(0.696 \pm 0.006)$ times the communication of any causally ordered protocol. These results elucidate the crucial role of the coherence of communication direction in achieving the exponential separation for the one-way processing task, and open a new path for experimentally exploring the fundamentals and applications of advanced features of indefinite causal structures.

Compact all-fiber polarization-independent up-conversion single-photon detector

We demonstrate a compact all-fiber polarization-independent up-conversion single-photon detector based on integrated reverse proton exchanged periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides. The horizontally and vertically polarized components of randomly polarized signals are separated with a fiber-coupled polarization beam splitter, launched into two orthogonally polarized polarization maintaining fibers and fetched into two adjacent independent waveguides on the same device. The up-converted outputs from both waveguide channels are then combined with a multi-mode fiber combiner and detected by a silicon detector. With this configuration, the polarization-independent single-photon counting at 1.55 um is achieved with a system detection efficiency of 29.3%, a dark count rate of 1600 counts per second, and a polarization dependent loss of 0.1dB. This compact all-fiber system is robust and has great application potential in practical quantum key distribution systems.

On-demand semiconductor source of entangled photons which simultaneously has high fidelity, efficiency, and indistinguishability

An outstanding goal in quantum optics and scalable photonic quantum technology is to develop a source that each time emits one and only one entangled photon pair with simultaneously high entanglement fidelity, extraction efficiency, and photon indistinguishability. By coherent two-photon excitation of a single InGaAs quantum dot coupled to a circular Bragg grating bullseye cavity with broadband high Purcell factor up to 11.3, we generate entangled photon pairs with a state fidelity of 0.90(1), pair generation rate of 0.59(1), pair extraction efficiency of 0.62(6), and photon indistinguishability of 0.90(1) simultaneously. Our work will open up many applications in high-efficiency multi-photon experiments and solid-state quantum repeaters.

Genuine 12-qubit entanglement on a superconducting quantum processor

We report the preparation and verification of a genuine 12-qubit entanglement in a superconducting processor. The processor that we designed and fabricated has qubits lying on a 1D chain with relaxation times ranging from 29.6 to 54.6 $μ$s. The fidelity of the 12-qubit entanglement was measured to be above $0.5544\pm0.0025$, exceeding the genuine multipartite entanglement threshold by 21 statistical standard deviations. Our entangling circuit to generate linear cluster states is depth-invariant in the number of qubits and uses single- and double-qubit gates instead of collective interactions. Our results are a substantial step towards large-scale random circuit sampling and scalable measurement-based quantum computing.

Up-conversion single-photon detectors based on integrated periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides

We demonstrate up-conversion single-photon detectors based on integrated periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides, which incorporate two mode filters and a directional coupler. The two mode filters are optimized for the fiber-waveguide coupling efficiencies for 1550 nm and 1950 nm respectively while the directional coupler plays the role of wavelength combiner, making the overall system portable and low-cost. The two wavelengths pump each other in our detection system. We achieve detection efficiencies of 28% for 1550 nm and 27% for 1950 nm, respectively. This scheme provides an efficient integrated single-photon detection method for any two well-separated spectral bands in the whole low-loss range of lithium niobate waveguides.

Experimental quantum teleportation

Quantum teleportation -- the transmission and reconstruction over arbitrary distances of the state of a quantum system -- is demonstrated experimentally. During teleportation, an initial photon which carries the polarization that is to be transferred and one of a pair of entangled photons are subjected to a measurement such that the second photon of the entangled pair acquires the polarization of the initial photon. This latter photon can be arbitrarily far away from the initial one. Quantum teleportation will be a critical ingredient for quantum computation networks.

Quantum Teleportation-Inspired Algorithm for Sampling Large Random Quantum Circuits

We show that low-depth random quantum circuits can be efficiently simulated by a quantum teleportation-inspired algorithm. By using logical qubits to redirect and teleport the quantum information in quantum circuits, the original circuits can be renormalized to new circuits with a smaller number of logical qubits. We demonstrate the algorithm to simulate several random quantum circuits, including 1D-chain 1000-qubit 42-depth, 2D-grid 125*8-qubit 42-depth and 2D-Bristlecone 72-qubit 32-depth circuits. Our results present a memory-efficient method with a clear physical picture to simulate low-depth random quantum circuits.

Experimental demonstration of nonbilocality with truly independent sources and strict locality constraints

Entanglement swapping entangles two particles that have never interacted[1], which implicitly assumes that each particle carries an independent local hidden variable, i.e., the presence of bilocality[2]. Previous experimental studies of bilocal hidden variable models did not fulfill the central requirement that the assumed two local hidden variable models must be mutually independent and hence their conclusions are flawed on the rejection of local realism[3-5]. By harnessing the laser phase randomization[6] rising from the spontaneous emission to the stimulated emission to ensure the independence between entangled photon-pairs created at separate sources and separating relevant events spacelike to satisfy the no-signaling condition, for the first time, we simultaneously close the loopholes of independent source, locality and measurement independence in an entanglement swapping experiment in a network. We measure a bilocal parameter of 1.181$\pm$0.004 and the CHSH game value of 2.652$\pm$0.059, indicating the rejection of bilocal hidden variable models by 45 standard deviations and local hidden variable models by 11 standard deviations. We hence rule out local realism and justify the presence of quantum nonlocality in our network experiment. Our experimental realization constitutes a fundamental block for a large quantum network. Furthermore, we anticipate that it may stimulate novel information processing applications[7,8].

Miniaturized high-frequency sine wave gating InGaAs/InP single-photon detector

High-frequency gating InGaAs/InP single-photon detectors (SPDs) are widely used for applications requiring single-photon detection in the near-infrared region such as quantum key distribution. Reducing SPD size is highly desired for practical use, which is favorable to the implementation of further system integration. Here we present, to the best of our knowledge, the most compact high-frequency sine wave gating (SWG) InGaAs/InP SPD. We design and fabricate an InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) with optimized semiconductor structure, and then encapsulate the SPAD chip and a mini-thermoelectric cooler inside a butterfly package with a size of 12.5 mm $\times$ 22 mm $\times$ 10 mm. Moreover, we implement a monolithic readout circuit for the SWG SPD in order to replace the quenching electronics that is previously designed with board-level integration. Finally, the components of SPAD, monolithic readout circuit and the affiliated circuits are integrated into a single module with a size of 13 cm $\times$ 8 cm $\times$ 4 cm. Compared with the 1.25 GHz SWG InGaAs/InP SPD module (25 cm $\times$ 10 cm $\times$ 33 cm) designed in 2012, the volume of our miniaturized SPD is reduced by 95\%. After the characterization, the SPD exhibits excellent performance with a photon detection efficiency of 30\%, a dark count rate of 2.0 kcps and an afterpulse probability of 8.8\% under the conditions of 1.25 GHz gating rate, 100 ns hold-off time and 243 K. Also, we perform the stability test over one week, and the results show the high reliability of the miniaturized SPD module.

High Controllable and Robust 2D Spin-Orbit Coupling for Quantum Gases

We report the realization of a robust and highly controllable two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling with topological non-trivial band structure. By applying a retro-reflected 2D optical lattice, phase tunable Raman couplings are formed into the anti-symmetric Raman lattice structure, and generate the 2D SO coupling with precise inversion and $C_4$ symmetries, leading to considerably enlarged topological regions. The life time of the 2D SO coupled Bose-Einstein condensate reaches several seconds, which enables the exploring of fine tuning interaction effects. These essential advantages of the present new realization open the door to explore exotic quantum many-body effects and non-equilibrium dynamics with novel topology.
