Heavy quarkonium production and polarization

We present a perturbative QCD factorization formalism for the production of heavy quarkonia of large transverse momentum $p_T$ at collider energies, which includes both the leading power (LP) and next-to-leading power (NLP) contributions to the cross section in the $m_Q^2/p_T^2$ expansion for heavy quark mass $m_Q$. We estimate fragmentation functions in the non-relativistic QCD formalism, and reproduce the bulk of the large enhancement found in explicit NLO calculations in the color singlet model. Heavy quarkonia produced from NLP channels prefer longitudinal polarization.

Exploring the structure of the proton through polarization observables in l p \to jet X

We present results for a complete set of polarization observables for jet production in lepton proton collision, where the final state lepton is not observed. The calculations are carried out in collinear factorization at the level of Born diagrams. For all the observables we also provide numerical estimates for typical kinematics of a potential future Electron Ion Collider. On the basis of this numerical study, the prospects for the transverse single target spin asymmetry are particularly promising. This observable is given by a certain quark-gluon correlation function, which has a direct relation to the transverse momentum dependent Sivers parton distribution.

An Observation Concerning the Process Dependence of the Sivers Functions

The $k_\perp$-moment of a quark's Sivers function is known to be related to the corresponding twist-three quark-gluon correlation function $T_{q,F}(x, x)$. The two functions have been extracted from data for single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and in single-inclusive hadron production in $pp$ collisions, respectively. Performing a consistent comparison of the extracted functions, we find that they show a "sign mismatch": while the magnitude of the functions is roughly consistent, the $k_\perp$-moment of the Sivers function has opposite sign from that of $T_{q,F}(x, x)$, both for up and for down quarks. Barring any inconsistencies in our theoretical understanding of the Sivers functions and their process dependence, the implication of this mismatch is that either, the Sivers effect is not dominantly responsible for the observed single-spin asymmetries in $pp$ collisions or, the current semi-inclusive lepton scattering data do not sufficiently constrain the $k_\perp$-moment of the quark Sivers functions. Both possibilities strengthen the case for further experimental investigations of single-spin asymmetries in high-energy $pp$ and $ep$ scattering.

Quark-gluon correlation functions relevant to single transverse spin asymmetries

We investigate the relative size of various twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions relevant to single transverse spin asymmetries (SSAs) in a quark-diquark model of the nucleon. We calculate the quark-gluon correlation function $T_{q,F}(x, x)$ that is responsible for the gluonic pole contribution to the SSAs, as well as $T_{q,F}(0, x)$ and $T_{Δ{q}, F}(0, x)$ responsible for the fermionic pole contributions. We find in both cases of a scalar diquark and an axial-vector diquark that at the first nontrivial order only the $\tq(x, x)$ is finite while all other quark-gluon correlation functions vanish. Using the same model, we evaluate quark Sivers function and discuss its relation to the $\tq(x, x)$. We also discuss the implication of our finding to the phenomenological studies of the SSAs.

Single transverse spin asymmetry of dilepton production near $Z^0$ pole

Using the latest quark Sivers functions extracted from the global analysis of available data on single transverse spin asymmetry (SSA), we calculate the SSA of Drell-Yan inclusive production of lepton pairs of invariant mass $Q$ at both $4<Q<9$ GeV and $Q\sim M_Z$ in $p^\uparrow p$ collisions at RHIC energies. We find that the features of the asymmetry $A_N$ for $Q\sim M_Z$ are significantly different from that when $4<Q<9$ GeV. The $A_N$ near $Z^0$ pole is positive and sizable in the central rapidity region while the $A_N$ at low $Q$ is negative and only sizable in the forward rapidity region. We show that the size of $A_N$ is sufficiently large for a wide range of $Q$ around the $Z^0$ pole, and even with the lepton pair's invariant mass integrated from Q=70 GeV to 110 GeV, the $A_N$ is still close to 10 percent for the central and near forward rapidity region. We argue that the SSAs of Drell-Yan inclusive dilepton production at low $Q$ and that near the $Z^0$ pole provide complementary information for testing the time-reversal modified universality (the sign change) of the Sivers functions.

Low-mass dilepton production in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions

We adopt a factorized QCD formalism to describe the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass lepton pairs produced in $pp$ collisions, when the pair transverse momentum $Q_T \gg Q$, with the pair's invariant mass $Q$ as low as $Q \sim Λ_{\mathrm{QCD}}$. We extend this formalism to dilepton production in $AA$ collisions by including the nuclear-dependent power correction due to parton multiple scattering.

Test the time-reversal modified universality of the Sivers function

We derive the time-reversal modified universality for both quark and gluon Sivers function from the parity and time-reversal invariance of QCD. We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry of inclusive lepton from the decay of $W$ bosons in polarized proton-proton collision at RHIC, in terms of the Sivers function. We find that although the asymmetry is diluted from the $W$ decay, the lepton asymmetry is at the level of several percent and is measurable for a good range of lepton rapidity at RHIC. We argue that this measurable lepton asymmetry at RHIC is an excellent observable for testing the time-reversal modified universality of the Sivers function.

Low-mass lepton pair production at large transverse momentum

We study the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass lepton pairs produced in hadronic scattering, using the perturbative QCD factorization approach. We argue that the distribution at large transverse momentum, $Q_T \gg Q$, with the pair's invariant mass $Q$ as low as $Q \sim Λ_{\mathrm{QCD}}$, can be systematically factorized into universal parton-to-lepton pair fragmentation functions, parton distributions, and perturbatively calculable partonic hard parts evaluated at a short distance scale $\sim {\cal O}(1/Q_T)$. We introduce a model for the input lepton pair fragmentation functions at a scale $μ_0\sim 1$ GeV, which are then evolved perturbatively to scales relevant at RHIC. Using the evolved fragmentation functions, we calculate the transverse momentum distributions in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. We also discuss the sensitivity of the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass lepton pairs to the gluon distribution.

Trigluon correlations and single transverse spin asymmetry in open charm production

We study the single transverse-spin asymmetry for open charm production in the semi-inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and $pp$ collision. Within collinear factorization approach, we find that the asymmetry is sensitive to the twist-3 trigluon correlation functions in the proton. With a simple model for the trigluon correlation functions, we estimate the asymmetry in SIDIS for both COMPASS and eRHIC kinematics, as well as in $pp$ collision at RHIC energy. We discuss the possibilities of extracting the trigluon correlation functions in these experiments.

Evolution of twist-3 multi-parton correlation functions relevant to single transverse-spin asymmetry

We constructed two sets of twist-3 correlation functions that are responsible for generating the novel single transverse-spin asymmetry in the QCD collinear factorization approach. We derive evolution equations for these universal three-parton correlation functions. We calculate evolution kernels relevant to the gluonic pole contributions to the asymmetry at the order of $α_s$. We find that all evolution kernels are infrared safe as they should be and have a lot in common to the DGLAP evolution kernels of unpolarized parton distributions. By solving the evolution equations, we explicitly demonstrate the factorization scale dependence of these twist-3 correlation functions.

Accessing tri-gluon correlations in the nucleon via the single spin asymmetry in open charm production

We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry for open charm production in $pp$ collisions within the QCD collinear factorization approach. We include contributions from both twist-three quark-gluon and tri-gluon correlation functions. We find that the quark-gluon correlation functions alone generate only a very small asymmetry for open charm production in the kinematic region of current interest at RHIC, so that the observation of any significant single-spin asymmetry would be a clear indication of the presence of tri-gluon correlations inside a polarized proton. We furthermore demonstrate that the tri-gluon contribution could be very different for the production of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons. These features make the single spin asymmetry in open charm production in polarized $pp$ collisions at RHIC an excellent probe of tri-gluon correlation functions.

Collinear factorization for deep inelastic scattering structure functions at large Bjorken xB

We examine the uncertainty of perturbative QCD factorization for hadron structure functions in deep inelastic scattering at a large value of the Bjorken variable xB. We analyze the target mass correction to the structure functions by using the collinear factorization approach in the momentum space. We express the long distance physics of structure functions and the leading target mass corrections in terms of parton distribution functions with the standard operator definition. We compare our result with existing work on the target mass correction. We also discuss the impact of a final-state jet function on the extraction of parton distributions at large fractional momentum x.

Single transverse-spin asymmetry for $D$-meson production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for open charm production in the semi-inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering. We calculate the asymmetry in terms of the QCD collinear factorization approach for $D$ mesons at high enough $P_{h\perp}$, and find that the asymmetry is proportional to the twist-three tri-gluon correlation function in the proton. With a simple model for the tri-gluon correlation function, we estimate the asymmetry for both COMPASS and eRHIC kinematics, and discuss the possibilities of extracting the tri-gluon correlation function in these experiments.

Transverse momentum broadening of vector boson production in high energy nuclear collisions

We calculate in perturbative QCD the transverse momentum broadening of vector boson production in high energy nuclear collisions. We evaluate the effect of initial-state parton multiple scattering for the production of the Drell-Yan virtual photon and $W/Z$ bosons. We calculate both the initial- and final-state multiple scattering effect for the production of heavy quarkonia and their transverse momentum broadening in both NRQCD and Color Evaporation model of quarkonium formation. We find that J/$ψ$ and $Υ$ broadening in hadron-nucleus collision is close to $2C_A/C_F$ times the corresponding Drell-Yan broadening, which gives a good description of existing Fermilab data. Our calculations are also consistent with RHIC data on J/$ψ$ broadening in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We predict the transverse momentum broadening of vector boson (J/$ψ$, $Υ$, and $W/Z$) production in relativistic heavy ion collisions at the LHC, and discuss the role of the vector boson broadening in diagnosing medium properties.

Color Transfer Enhancement for Heavy Quarkonium Production

We study the transfer of color between a heavy quark pair and an unpaired heavy quark or antiquark moving at a nonrelativistic velocity with respect to the pair. We find that the open heavy quark or antiquark can catalyze the transformation of the pair from octet representation at short distances to singlet at long distances. This process is infrared sensitive in general, and we exhibit double poles in dimensional regularization at next-to-next-to-leading order in the transition probability. Because of their dependence on kinematic variables, these poles cannot be matched to the non-perturbative matrix elements of effective field theories based on a single heavy quark pair.

Transverse momentum dependence of the angular distribution of the Drell-Yan process

We calculate the transverse momentum Q_{\perp} dependence of the helicity structure functions for the hadroproduction of a massive pair of leptons with pair invariant mass Q. These structure functions determine the angular distribution of the leptons in the pair rest frame. Unphysical behavior in the region Q_{\perp} --> 0 is seen in the results of calculations done at fixed-order in QCD perturbation theory. We use current conservation to demonstrate that the unphysical inverse-power and \ln(Q/Q_{\perp}) logarithmic divergences in three of the four independent helicity structure functions share the same origin as the divergent terms in fixed-order calculations of the angular-integrated cross section. We show that the resummation of these divergences to all orders in the strong coupling strength α_s can be reduced to the solved problem of the resummation of the divergences in the angular-integrated cross section, resulting in well-behaved predictions in the small Q_{\perp} region. Among other results, we show the resummed part of the helicity structure functions preserves the Lam-Tung relation between the longitudinal and double spin-flip structure functions as a function of Q_{\perp} to all orders in α_s.

Color Transfer in Associated Heavy-Quarkonium Production

We study the production of heavy quarkonium in association with an additional heavy pair. We argue that important contributions may come from phase space regions where three heavy fermions are separated by relative velocities much lower than the speed of light, and to which standard effective field theories do not apply. In this region, infrared sensitive color exchange is specific to the presence of the unpaired (anti)quark. This effect vanishes as the motion of the additional particle becomes relativistic with respect to the pair, and is completely absent for massless quarks and gluons in the final state.

Angular distribution of leptons from the decay of massive vector bosons

We examine the transverse momentum $Q_\perp$ dependence of the helicity structure functions for massive vector bosons of mass $Q$ in hadron reactions. We demonstrate that large logarithmic terms of the form $\ln(Q/Q_\perp)$ in the helicity structure functions have the same origin as the logarithmic terms in the angular-integrated cross section and that they can be resummed to all orders in the strong coupling $α_s$, in the same way as the angular-integrated cross section. As a consequence of current conservation, the resummed part of the helicity structure functions preserves the Lam-Tung relation as a function of $Q_\perp$ to all orders in $α_s$.
