An invisibility cloak using silver nanowires

In this paper, we use the parameter retrieval method together with an analytical effective medium approach to design a well-performed invisible cloak, which is based on an empirical revised version of the reduced cloak. The designed cloak can be implemented by silver nanowires with elliptical cross-sections embedded in a polymethyl methacrylate host. This cloak is numerically proved to be robust for both the inner hidden object as well as incoming detecting waves, and is much simpler thus easier to manufacture when compared with the earlier proposed one [Nat. Photon. 1, 224 (2007)].

Photonic Localization of Interface Modes at the Boundary between Metal and Fibonacci Quasi-Periodic Structure

We investigated on the interface modes in a heterostructure consisting of a semi-infinite metallic layer and a semi-infinite Fibonacci quasi-periodic structure. Various properties of the interface modes, such as their spatial localizations, self-similarities, and multifractal properties are studied. The interface modes decay exponentially in different ways and the modes in the lower stable gap possess highest spatial localization. A localization index is introduced to understand the localization properties of the interface modes. We found that the localization index of the interface modes in the upper stable gap will converge to two slightly different constants according to the parity of the Fibonacci generation. In addition, the localization-delocalization transition is also found in the interface modes of the transient gap.

True 3D imaging with monocular cues using holographic stereography

A quantitative condition is derived to evaluate the monocular accommodation in holographic stereograms. We find that the reconstruction can be viewed as true-3D image when the whole scene is located in the monocular cues area, with compatible monocular cues and binocular cues. In contrast, it reveals incorrect monocular cues in the visible multi-imaging area and the lacking information area. To demonstrate our theoretical predictions, a pupil-function integral imaging algorithm is developed to simulate the mono-eye observation, and a holographic printing system is set up to fabricate the full-parallax holographic stereogram. Both simulation and experimental results match our theoretical predictions.

Localization characteristics of two-dimensional quasicrystals consisting of metal nanoparticles

Using the eigen-decomposition method, we investigated the plasmonic modes in a two-dimensional quasicrystalline array of metal nanoparticles. Various properties of the plasmonic modes, such as their symmetry, radiation loss and spatial localization are studied. Some collective plasmonic modes are found to be leaky with out-of-plane radiation loss, but some modes can have very high fidelity. To facilitate the analysis on the complex behavior of the collective plasmonic modes, we considered a trajectory map in a three dimension parameter space defined by the frequency of the mode, the participation ratio of the mode that gives the spatial distribution, and the eigenvalue that is related to the inverse lifetime of the mode. With the help of the trajectory map method, we found that there are modes that are localized in some special ways and the plasmonic mode with highest spatial localization and highly fidelity is found to be a type of anti-phase ring mode. In general, different localized modes have very different radial decay behaviors. There is no special relationship between the fidelity of the modes and their spatial localization.
