Sub-system fidelity for ground states in one dimensional interacting systems

We propose to utilize the sub-system fidelity (SSF), defined by comparing a pair of reduced density matrices derived from the degenerate ground states, to identify and/or characterize symmetry protected topological (SPT) states in one-dimensional interacting many-body systems. The SSF tells whether two states are locally indistinguishable (LI) by measurements within a given sub-system. Starting from two polar states (states that could be distinguished on either edge), the other combinations of these states can be mapped onto a Bloch sphere. We prove that a pair of orthogonal states on the equator of the Bloch sphere are LI, independently of whether they are SPT states or cat states (symmetry-preserving states by linear combinations of states that break discrete symmetries). Armed with this theorem, we provide a scheme to construct zero-energy exitations that swap the LI states. We show that the zero mode can be located anywhere for cat states, but is localized near the edge for SPT states. We also show that the SPT states are LI in a finite fraction of the bulk (excluding the two edges), whereas the symmetry-breaking states are distinguishable. This can be used to pinpoint the transition from SPT states to the symmetry-breaking states.

Phase diagram and topological phases in the triangular lattice Kitaev-Hubbard model

We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with spin-dependent Kitaev-like hopping. Using the variational cluster approach, we identify five phases: a metallic phase, a non-coplanar chiral magnetic order, a $120^\circ$ magnetic order, a nonmagnetic insulator (NMI), and an interacting Chern insulator (CI) with a nonzero Chern number. The transition from CI to NMI is characterized by the change of the charge gap from an indirect band gap to a direct Mott gap. Based on the slave-rotor mean-field theory, the NMI phase is further suggested to be a gapless Mott insulator with a spinon Fermi surface or a fractionalized CI with nontrivial spinon topology, depending on the strength of Kitaev-like hopping. Our work highlights the rising field that interesting phases emerge from the interplay of band topology and Mott physics.

Possible singlet and triplet superconductivity on honeycomb lattice

We study the possible superconducting pairing symmetry mediated by spin and charge fluctuations on the honeycomb lattice using the extended Hubbard model and the random-phase-approximation method. From $2\%$ to $20\%$ doping levels, a spin-singlet $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy}$-wave is shown to be the leading superconducting pairing symmetry when only the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ is considered, with the gap function being a mixture of the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor pairings. When the offset of the energy level between the two sublattices exceeds a critical value, the most favorable pairing is a spin-triplet $f$-wave which is mainly composed of the next-nearest-neighbor pairing. We show that the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V$ is also in favor of the spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing.

Fermi arcs, pseudogap and collective excitations in doped Sr2IrO4: A generalized fluctuation exchange study

Motivated by recent experimental measurements, we study the quasiparticle spectra and the collective excitations in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, in which the interesting interplay between the electronic correlations and strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) exists. To include the SOC, we use the Hugenholtz diagrams to extend the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approach to the case where the SU(2) symmetry can be broken. By using this generalized FLEX method, we find a weak pseudogap behavior near $(π,0)$ in the slightly electron-doped system, with the corresponding Fermi arc formed by the partial destruction of Fermi surface. Similar features also appear in the hole-doped system, however, the position of the Fermi arc is rotated $45^\circ$ with respect to the former. These results are consistent with the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectra in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We demonstrate that these anomalous features are mainly caused by the isospin fluctuations derived from the effective $J_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ doublet.

Global phase diagram, possible chiral spin liquid and topological superconductivity in the triangular Kitaev-Heisenberg model

The possible ground states of the undoped and doped Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice are studied. For the undoped system, a combination of the numerical exact diagonalization calculation and the four-sublattice transformation analysis suggests one possible exotic phase and four magnetically ordered phases including a collinear stripe pattern and a noncollinear spiral pattern in the global phase diagram. The exotic phase near the antiferromagnetic (AF) Kitaev point is further investigated by using the Schwinger-fermion mean-field method, and we obtain an energetically favorable $Z_2$ chiral spin liquid with a Chern number $\pm2$ as a promising candidate. At finite doping, we find that the AF Heisenberg coupling supports an $s$-wave or a $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$-wave superconductivity (SC), while the AF and the ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions favor a $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$-wave SC and a time-reversal invariant topological $p$-wave SC, respectively. Possible experimental realizations and related candidate materials are also discussed.

Majorana Edge States and Braiding in an Exactly Solvable One-dimensional Spin Model

We derive an exactly solvable one-dimensional (1D) spin model from the three-band Hubbard model with a strong spin-orbit coupling by introducing U(1) gauge fields to the isospin states. We find that it has a topological nontrivial phase characterized by Majorana end modes which are protected by a new Z_2 topological invariant related to the parity of the lattice sites (odd or even number of sites) in the spin chain. With the protection of this Z_2 topological invariant, a novel braiding of two Majorana edge states in this strictly geometric 1D chain is realized. We also discuss the possible realization of the gauge fields.

Consistent picture of the octet-nodal gap and its evolution with doping in heavily overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We investigate the pairing symmetry in heavily overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ based on the spin-fluctuation mechanism. The exotic octet nodes of the superconducting gap and the unusual evolution of the gap with doping observed by the recent experiments are well explained in a unified manner. We demonstrate that the scatterings of electrons on the Fermi patches is mainly responsible for the incommensurate spin fluctuations and consequently the Fermi-surface-dependent multi-gap structure, since the Fermi level is close to the flat band. In addition, we find that a $d$-wave pairing state will prevail over the s-wave pairing state around the Lifshitz transition point.

Localized in-gap state in a single electron doped Mott insulator

Motivated by the recent atomic-scale scanning tunneling microscope (STM) observation for a spatially localized in-gap state in an electron doped Mott insulator, we evaluate the local electronic state of the Hubbard model on the square lattice using the cluster perturbation theory. An in-gap state is found to exist below the upper Hubbard band around the dopant lattice site, which is consistent with the STM measurements. The emergence of this local in-gap state is accompanied with a rapid reduction of the double occupancy of electrons. A similar in-gap state is also found to exist on the triangular lattice. These results suggest that the in-gap state is an inherent feature of Mott insulators independent of the lattice structure.

Effects of the spin-orbital coupling on the vacancy-induced magnetism on the honeycomb lattice

The local magnetism induced by vacancies in the presence of the spin-orbital interaction is investigated based on the half-filled Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. Using the self-consistent mean-field theory, we find that the spin-orbital coupling will enhance the localization of the spin moments near a single vacancy. We further study the magnetic structures along the zigzag edges formed by a chain of vacancies. We find that the spin-orbital coupling tends to suppress the counter-polarized ferrimagnetic order on the upper and lower edges, because of the open of the spin-orbital gap. As a result, in the case of the balance number of sublattices, it will suppress completely this kind of ferrimagnetic order. But, for the imbalance case, a ferrimagnetic order along both edges exists because additional zero modes will not be affected by the spin-orbital coupling.

Spin fluctuations and pairing symmetry in A$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$: dual effect of the itinerant and the localized nature of electrons

We investigate the spin fluctuations and the pairing symmetry in A$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ by the fluctuation exchange approximation. Besides the on-site interactions, the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling $J_{2}$ is also included. We find that both the itinerant and the localized natures of electrons are important to describe the recent experimental results of the spin fluctuations and the pairing symmetry. In particular, a small $J_{2}$ coupling can change the pairing gap from the d-wave symmetry to the s-wave symmetry. We have also studied the real-space structures of the gap functions for different orbits in order to gain more insight on the nature of the pairing mechanism.

Correlation-driven chiral superconductivity and chiral spin order in doped kagome lattice

We study the electronic instabilities of the Hubbard model in the 1/6 hole-doped Kagome lattice using the variational cluster approach. The 1/6 hole doping is unique in the sense that the Fermi level is at the von Hove singularity and the Fermi surface has a perfect nesting. In this case, a density wave is usually realized. However, we demonstrate here that the chiral $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy}$ superconducting state is most favorable when a small Hubbard interaction U(U<3.0t) is introduced, and a scalar chiral spin order is realized at large U(U>5.0t). Between them, a spin-disordered insulating state is proposed.

Effects of the vortices and impurities on the nuclear spin relaxation rate in iron-based superconductors

The effects of magnetic vortices and nonmagnetic impurities on the low energy quasiparticle excitations and the spin-lattice relaxation rate are examined in the iron-based superconductors for the $s_{\pm}$-, $s$- and d-wave pairing symmetries, respectively. The main effect of the vortices is to enhance the quasiparticle excitations and the spin-lattice relaxation rate for all symmetries, and leads to a $T^{3}$ dependence of the relaxation rate followed by a nearly $T$-linearity at lower temperatures. This enhancement can only be seen for the $s_{\pm}$- and d-wave symmetries in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. These results suggest that the $s_{\pm}$-wave and d-wave pairing states behave similarly in response to the magnetic field and nonmagnetic impurities, therefore it may be impossible to distinguish them on the basis of the measurements of spin-lattice relaxation rates when a magnetic field and/or impurity scatterings are present.

Mott Physics and Topological Phase Transition in Correlated Dirac Fermions

We investigate the interplay between the strong correlation and the spin-orbital coupling in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model and obtain the qualitative phase diagram via the variational cluster approach. We identify, through an increase of the Hubbard $U$, the transition from the topological band insulator to either the spin liquid phase or the easy-plane antiferromagnetic insulating phase, depending on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling. A nontrivial evolution of the bulk bands in the topological quantum phase transition is also demonstrated.

Orbital-transverse density-wave instabilities in iron-based superconductors

Besides the conventional spin-density-wave (SDW) state, a new kind of orbital-transverse density-wave (OTDW) state is shown to exist generally in multi-orbital systems. We demonstrate that the orbital character of Fermi surface nesting plays an important role in density responses. The relationship between antiferromagnetism and structural phase transition in LaFeAsO (1111) and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (122) compounds of iron-based superconductors may be understood in terms of the interplay between the SDW and OTDW with a five-orbital Hamiltonian. We propose that the essential difference between 1111 and 122 compounds is crucially determined by the presence of the two-dimensional $d_{xy}$-like Fermi surface around (0,0) being only in 1111 parent compounds.

Vortex state in iron-based superconductors with collinear antiferromagnetic cores

Magnetism in the FeAs stoichiometric compounds and its interplay with superconductivity in vortex states are studied by self-consistently solving the BdG equations based on a two-orbital model with including the on-site interactions between electrons in the two orbitals. It is revealed that for the parent compound, magnetism is caused by the strong Hund's coupling, and the Fermi surface topology aids to select the spin-density-wave (SDW) pattern. The superconducting (SC) order parameter with $s_{\pm}=Δ_{0}\cos(k_{x})\cos(k_{y})$ symmetry is found to be the most favorable pairing for both the electron- and hole-doped cases, while the local density-of-states (LDOS) exhibits the characteristic of nodal gap for the former and full gap for the latter. In the vortex state, the emergence of the field-induced SDW depends on the strength of the Hund's coupling and the Coulomb repulsions. The field-induced SDW gaps the finite energy contours on the electron and hole pocket sides, leading to the dual structures with one reflecting the SC pairing and the other being related to the SDW order. These features can be discernable in STM measurements for identifying the interplay between the field-induced SDW order and the SC order around the core region.

Quantum Phase Transition in Hall Conductivity on an Anisotropic Kagome Lattice

We study the quantum Hall effect(QHE) on the Kagomé lattice with anisotropy in one of the hopping integrals. We find a new type of QHE characterized by the quantization rules for Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}=2ne^{2}/h$ and Landau Levels $E(n)=\pm v_{F}\sqrt{(n+1/2)\hbar Be}$ ($n$ is an integer), which is different from any known type. This phase evolves from the QHE phase with $σ_{xy}=4(n+1/2)e^{2}/h$ and $E(n)=\pm v_{F}\sqrt{2n\hbar Be}$ in the isotropic case, which is realized in a system with massless Dirac fermions (such as in graphene). The phase transition does not occur simultaneously in all Hall plateaus as usual but in sequence from low to high energies, with the increase of hopping anisotropy.

Coexistence of the antiferromagnetic and superconducting order and its effect on spin dynamics in electron-doped high-$T_{c}$ cuprates

In the framework of the slave-boson approach to the $t-t'-t''-J$ model, it is found that for electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates, the staggered antiferromagnetic (AF) order coexists with superconducting (SC) order in a wide doping level ranged from underdoped to nearly optimal doping at the mean-field level. In the coexisting phase, it is revealed that the spin response is commensurate in a substantial frequency range below a crossover frequency $ω_{c}$ for all dopings considered, and it switches to the incommensurate structure when the frequency is higher than $ω_{c}$. This result is in agreement with the experimental measurements. Comparison of the spin response between the coexisting phase and the pure SC phase with a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave pairing plus a higher harmonics term (DP+HH) suggests that the inclusion of the two-band effect is important to consistently account for both the dispersion of the spin response and the non-monotonic gap behavior in the electron-doped cuprates.

Spectral and optical properties in the antiphase stripe phase of the cuprate superconductors

We investigate the superconducting order parameter, the spectral and optical properties in a stripe model with spin (charge) domain-derived scattering potential $V_{s}$ ($V_{c}$). We show that the charge domain-derived scattering is less effective than the spin scattering on the suppression of superconductivity. For $V_{s}\gg V_{c}$, the spectral weight concentrates on the ($π,0$) antinodal region, and a finite energy peak appears in the optical conductivity with the disappearance of the Drude peak. But for $V_{s}\approx V_{c}$, the spectral weight concentrates on the ($π/2,π/2$) nodal region, and a residual Drude peak exists in the optical conductivity without the finite energy peak. These results consistently account for the divergent observations in the ARPES and optical conductivity experiments in several high-$T_c$ cuprates, and suggest that the "insulating" and "metallic" properties are intrinsic to the stripe state, depending on the relative strength of the spin and charge domain-derived scattering potentials.
