Effect of unitary impurities in non-STM-types of tunneling in high-T_c superconductors

Based on an extended Hubbard model, we present calculations of both the local (i.e., single-site) and spatially-averaged differential tunneling conductance in d-wave superconductors containing nonmagnetic impurities in the unitary limit. Our results show that a random distribution of unitary impurities of any concentration can at most give rise to a finite zero-bias conductance (with no peak there) in spatially-averaged non-STM type of tunneling, in spite of the fact that local tunneling in the immediate vicinity of an isolated impurity does show a conductance peak at zero bias, whereas to give rise to even a small zero-bias conductance peak in the former type of tunneling the impurities must form dimers, trimers, etc. along the [110] directions. In addition, we find that the most-recently-observed novel pattern of the tunneling conductance around a single impurity by Pan et al. [Nature (London) 403,746 (2000)] can be explained in terms of a realistic model of the tunneling configuration which gives rise to the experimental results reported there. The key feature in this model is the blocking effect of the BiO and SrO layers which exist between the tunneling tip and the CuO_2 layer being probed.

Quasiparticle Resonant States Induced by a Unitary Impurity in a d-Wave Superconductor

The quasiparticle resonant states around a single nonmagnetic impurity with unitary scattering in a d-wave superconductor is studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations based on a t-J model. Both the spatial variation of the order parameter and the local density of states (LDOS) around the impurity have been investigated. We find: (i) A particle-hole symmetric system has a single symmetric zero-energy peak in the LDOS regardless of the size of the superconducting coherence length ξ_0; (ii) For the particle-hole asymmetric case, an asymmetric splitting of the zero-energy peak is intrinsic to a system with a small value of k_{F}ξ_0.

Competing effects of mass anisotropy and spin Zeeman coupling on the upper critical field of a mixed $d$- and s-wave superconductor

Based on the linearized Eilenberger equations, the upper critical field $(H_{c2})$ of mixed d- and s-wave superconductors has been microscopically studied with an emphasis on the competing effects of mass anisotropy and spin Zeeman coupling. We find the mass anisotropy always enhance $H_{c2}$ while the Zeeman interaction suppresses $H_{c2}$. As required by the thermodynamics, we find $H_{c2}$ is saturated at zero temperature. We compare the theoretical calculations with recent experimental data of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-+AFw-delta}$.

Proximity effect, quasiparticle transport, and local magnetic moment in ferromagnet-d-wave superconductor junctions

The proximity effect, quasiparticle transport, and local magnetic moment in ferromagnet--d-wave superconductor junctions with {110}-oriented interface are studied by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations within an extended Hubbard model. It is found that the proximity induced order parameter oscillates in the ferromagnetic region. The modulation period is shortened with the increased exchange field while the oscillation amplitude is depressed by the interfacial scattering. With the determined superconducting energy gap, a transfer matrix method is proposed to compute the subgap conductance within a scattering approach. Many novel features including the zero-bias conductance dip and splitting are exhibited with appropriate values of the exchange field and interfacial scattering strength. The conductance spectrum can be influenced seriously by the spin-flip interfacial scattering. In addition, a sizable local magnetic moment near the {110}-oriented surface of the d-wave superconductor is discussed.

Spontaneous flux in a d-wave superconductor with time-reversal-symmetry-broken pairing state at {110} boundaries

The induction of an s-wave component in a d-wave superconductor is considered. Near the {110}-oriented edges of such a sample, the induced s-wave order parameter together with d-wave component forms a complex combination d+e^{iϕ} s, which breaks the time reversal symmetry (BTRS) of the pairing state. As a result, the spontaneous current is created. We numerically study the current distribution and the formation of the spontaneous flux induced by the current. We show that the spontaneous flux formed from a number of defect lines with {110} orientation has a measurable strength. This result may provide a unambiguous way to check the existence of BTRS pairing state at {110}-oriented boundaries.

Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for mixed d- and s-wave superconductors

A set of coupled time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (TDGL) for superconductors of mixed d- and s-wave symmetry are derived microscopically from the Gor'kov equations by using the analytical continuation technique. The scattering effects due to impurities with both nonmagnetic and magnetic interactions are considered. We find that the d- and s-wave components of the order parameter can have very different relaxation times in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. This result is contrary to a set of phenomenologically proposed TDGL equations and thus may lead to new physics in the dynamics of flux motion.
