Violation and Restoration of Probability Positivity in Perturbative Quantum Field Theory: From Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Chromodynamics

In quantum mechanics the modulus square of the wave function is the probability of an event --- positivity is self-evident. Quantum field theory corresponds to quantum mechanics one-to-one: the wave function corresponds to the matrix element, so the probability of a process should be the modulus square of the matrix element, positive by construction. In the founding era of perturbative quantum field theory, however, Feynman, Schwinger and Tomonaga treated inclusive processes in quantum electrodynamics, where the truncation of the squared amplitude was forced by infrared cancellations and rendered harmless by the small coupling $α\simeq1/137$. Carried over to exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics, where the coupling is large, this practice produced negative decay and production rates already at NLO, persisting at NNLO. We point out that for exclusive processes, whose initial and final states are colorless for QCD and electrically neutral for QED, the infrared divergences cancel amplitude by amplitude and the KLN constraint is absent, so the complete modulus square of the truncated amplitude is the proper, manifestly positive definition of the probability. We formulate amplitude-level NRQCD factorization as the systematic prescription that restores positivity, show that every amplitude-level truncated observable admits the effective representation $Γ^{\mathrm{amp}}=Γ_{\mathrm{LO}}\bigl|1+\frac{α_s}π(c_1+ic_2)+\frac{α_s^2}{π^2}(c_3+ic_4)\bigr|^2$, and demonstrate, with the complete NNLO QCD corrections to $J/ψ\to3γ$, $Υ\to3γ$, $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+J/ψ$ and the eight exclusive charmonium production channels at $B$ factories, that the prescription yields positive and better-converging predictions.

Reanalysis of exclusive charmonium production at the $B$ factories

In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of the next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the exclusive processes $e^{+}e^{-}\to J/ψ+η_{c}$, $e^{+}e^{-}\to J/ψ+χ_{cJ}$, $e^{+}e^{-}\to η_{c}+γ$, and $e^{+}e^{-}\to χ_{cJ}+γ$ $(J=0,1,2)$ at the $B$ factories, comparing perturbative expansions truncated at the amplitude level and squared-amplitude level. Our results show that the amplitude-level prescription improves the perturbative convergence, with the NNLO/LO ratios lying closer to the corresponding NLO/LO ratios than those in the squared-amplitude-level prescription. This improvement is particularly pronounced for $e^{+}e^{-}\toχ_{c2}+γ$, where the NNLO prediction is about 27\% of the LO result in the amplitude-level prescription, compared with only 12\% in the squared-amplitude-level prescription. The amplitude-level prescription also reduces the residual renormalization scale dependence, particularly for the $P$-wave channels. Finally, the NNLO predictions are generally in good agreement with the available Belle and BaBar measurements and have central values closer to the data than those obtained with the squared-amplitude-level prescription. For channels with only upper limits, the predictions from both prescriptions are consistent with the experimental constraints, except for $e^{+}e^{-}\toη_c+γ$, where both NNLO predictions remain above the current upper limit.

Complete Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Correction to $J/ψ\to 3γ$ Decay

We address the long-standing problem of negative decay and production rates in perturbative QCD for exclusive processes by proposing amplitude-level NRQCD factorization as a systematic prescription. Building on this, we present the first complete next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) QCD correction to the decay $J/ψ\to 3γ$. The resulting partial width, $Γ(J/ψ\to 3γ) = 0.96^{+4.32}_{-0.13}$ eV, combines this NNLO contribution with the known up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s v^2)$ relativistic correction and shows markedly improved agreement with the high-precision BESIII measurement. In the same way, $Γ(Υ\to 3γ) = 0.0086^{+0.0028}_{-0.0006}$ eV is obtained. The dominant theoretical uncertainty originates from the renormalization scale variation, underscoring the challenge of perturbative convergence at this order and the necessity for future higher-order calculations.

QCD corrections of $e^+e^- \to J/ψ+c+\bar{c}$ using the principle of maximum conformality

In this paper, we compute the total and differential cross sections for $e^+e^- \to J/ψ+c+\bar{c}$ at the $B$ factories up to next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections within the framework of nonrelativistic QCD factorization theory. We then obtain improved pQCD series of those cross sections by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). We show that the PMC can be applied for any pQCD calculable observable at the total and differential levels via a self-consistent way in perturbation theory. We observe that a more precise prompt total cross section at the NLO level can be achieved after applying the PMC, e.g. $σ|_{\rm prompt}^{\rm PMC}= 0.565^{+0.144}_{-0.125}~\text{pb}$. Here the uncertainty is the squared average of those from the $α_s$ fixed-point uncertainty $Δα_s(M_Z)$, the uncertainty of charm quark mass $Δm_c$, and an estimated contribution of the uncalculated NNLO-terms as predicted by the Padé approximation approach. The differential cross sections $dσ/dP_{J/ψ}$, $dσ/d|\cos θ|$, and $dσ/dz$ for $e^+e^- \to J/ψ+c+\bar{c}$ are further examined. Those results show that by further considering the feed-down contributions, the PMC predictions show better agreement with the Belle measurements.

Next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to double $J/ψ$ production at the $B$ factories

In this paper, we study the next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) QCD corrections for the process $e^+e^- \to J/ψ+J/ψ$ at the $B$ factories. By including the NNLO corrections, the cross section turns negative due to the poor convergence of perturbative expansion. Consequently, to obtain a reasonable estimation for the cross section, the square of the amplitude up to NNLO is used. In addition, the contributions from the bottom quark and the light-by-light part, which are usually neglected, are also included. The final cross section is obtained as $1.76^{+2.42}_{-1.66} ~{\rm fb}$ at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=10.58$ GeV. Our result for total cross section and differential cross section could be compared with precise experimental measurement in future at the $B$ factories.

Next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to $J/ψ$ plus $η_c$ production at the $B$ factories

In this paper, we calculate the next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) QCD corrections to $e^+e^- \to J/ψ+η_c$ at the $B$ factories. After including the NNLO corrections, the cross section of $e^+e^- \to J/ψ+η_c$ is enhanced by about $17\%$, and the perturbative series of the prediction shows the convergent behavior. It is also found that the contribution from bottom quark starts at the $α_s^3$-order, which is about $2.4\%$ of the total prediction. The renormalization scale $μ_R$ dependence of the cross section is reduced at the NNLO level, but the prediction is sensitive to the charm quark mass $m_c$. By considering the uncertainties caused by renormalization scale $μ_R$, charm quark mass $m_c$ and the NRQCD factorization scale $μ_Λ$, our prediction shows agreement with the BABAR and BELLE measurements within errors.

A new approach for amplitudes with multiple fermion lines

A new approach for tree-level amplitudes with multiple fermion lines is presented. It mainly focuses on the simplification of fermion lines. By calculating two vectors recursively without any matrix multiplications, the result of a fermion line is reduced to a very compact form depending only on the two vectors. The comparisons with other packages are presented, and the results show that our package FDC gives a very good performance in the processes of multiple fermion lines with this new approach and some other improvements. A further comparison with WHIZARD shows that this new approach has a competitive efficiency in computing pure amplitude square without phase space integration.

Study of the rare decay $J/ψ\to 2γ+hadrons$ at the BESIII

Two-photon radiative decay process $J/ψ\to 2γ+hadrons$ is studied, and the main contribution processes $J/ψ\to 2γ+ g g g$ and $J/ψ\to 2γ+ q \bar{q}$ are calculated. With the specific condition at the BESIII, this rare decay process and the main background process $e^{+} e^{-} \to γγ+ hadrons (q \bar{q})$ are investigated. The results show that the ratio of signal to background can reach 1.24 with the optimized selection criteria at the BESIII. In addition, a few distributions of the signal and background are presented. All the results show that the signal is large enough to be measured in the experiment.

Inclusive $Υ(1S,2S,3S)$ photoproduction at the CEPC

The inclusive $Υ(1S,2S,3S)$ photoproduction at the future Circular-Electron-Positron-Collider (CEPC) is studied based on the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD). Including the contributions from both direct and resolved photons, we present different distributions for $Υ(1S,2S,3S)$ production and the results show there will be considerable events, which means that a well measurements on the $Υ$ photoprodution could be performed to further study on the heavy quarkonium physics at electron-positron collider in addition to hadron colliders. This supplement study is very important to clarify the current situation of the heavy quarkonium production mechanism.

The complete study on polarization of $Υ(nS)$ hadroproduction at QCD next-to-leading order

Applying the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism to the $Υ(1S,2S,3S)$ hadroproduction, a complete analysis on the polarization parameters $λ_θ$, $λ_{θϕ}$, $λ_ϕ$ for the production are presented at QCD next-to-leading order. With the long-distance matrix elements extracted from experimental data for the production rate and polarization parameter $λ_θ$ of $Υ$ hadroproduction, our results provide a good description for the measured parameters $λ_{θϕ}$ and $λ_ϕ$ in both the helicity and the Collins-Soper frames. In our calculations the frame invariant parameter $\tildeλ$ is consistent in the two frames. Finally, it is pointed out that there are discrepancies for $\tildeλ$ between available experimental data and corresponding theoretical predictions.

Prompt $J/ψ$ photoproduction within the non-relativistic QCD framework at the CEPC

The prompt $J/ψ$ photoproduction within the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) framework at the future Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) is studied, including the contributions from both direct and resolved photons. Employing different sets of long distance matrix elements, the total cross section is dominated by the color-octet channel. We present different kinematic distributions of $J/ψ$ production and the results show there will be about 50 $J/ψ$ events when the transverse momentum of $J/ψ$ is up to 20 GeV. It renders that the $J/ψ$ photoprodution at the CEPC is a well laboratory to test the NRQCD and further clarify the universality problem in NRQCD between electron positron collider and hadron collider.

Perturbative QCD for $J/ψ$ Inclusive Production Via Initial State Radiation at $e^+e^-$ collider

Up to the next-leading order (NLO) of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the process $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+X$ with the center-of-mass (CM) energy range from 3.7 to 10.6 GeV is calculated. At 10.6 GeV, the results is consistent with the experiment results at the Belle. However, the predictions are much smaller than the measurement at BESIII at low CM energy range from 3.7 to 4.6 GeV. This indicates that the convergence of QCD perturbative expansion becomes worse as the CM energy becomes lower and closer to the inclusive $J/ψ$ production threshold. For a further study of the QCD mechanism on $J/ψ$ production at $e^+e^-$ collider with different CM energy, the initial state radiation effect of $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+gg$ and $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+c \bar{c}$ are calculated at the QCD NLO. The results are plotted and the numbers of events for different CM energy bins are provided for the designed SuperKEKB. This provides a method to precisely test the validity of perturbative prediction on $J/ψ$ production in future measurements.

The complete study on the inclusive production of Υ + γ at the LHC

In this paper we investigate the inclusive associated production of Υ + γ at the hadron collider. We calculate the color-singlet sub-processes and all three color-octet sub-processes at the next-to-leading order. Seven sets of long distance matrix elements(LDMEs), which are extracted from the studies on the prompt production of Υ at hadron colliders, are used to give the numerical results and we find that there are three sets of LDMEs give the unphysical results on the yield and the polarization for this process. The yield is enhanced by several or two orders times comparing to that of color-singlet process and the polarization changes from longitudinal to slightly transverse or even mainly transverse in the large pt region. The estimation results indicate that to study the process at the large hadron collider (LHC) is difficult and it may be well investigated at the future Super Proton-Proton Collider(SPPC).

Angular distribution coefficients of Z(W) boson produced in $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=240$ GeV

At designed CEPC, similar to hadron collider, the angular distribution coefficients of decay lepton pair from produced Z(W) boson in $e^+ e^-$ collisions are predicted. Their dependence on $cosθ_Z$($cosθ_W$) are presented in four different polarization frame. Furthermore, the value of angular coefficients in different bins of $cosθ_Z$ are presented in the C-S frame. In comparison to the case at hadron collider, better accurate measurement for $Z(W)$ is expected since there exists less background and $W$ could be reconstructed from it's leptonic decay channel. This work supply a way to precise test the electroweak production mechanism or some effect induced from new physics in the future measurements at the CEPC.

The remaining parts for the long-standing J/psi polarization puzzle

Based on the non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism, the polarization parameters $λ_{θϕ}$ and $λ_ϕ$ of $J/ψ$ hadroproduction are analyzed in helicity frame and calculated at QCD next-to-leading order for the first time. For prompt $J/ψ$ production, we take into account the feeddown contributions from $χ_{cJ}$ and $ψ(2S)$ decays. The theoretical predictions for the polarization parameters $λ_{θϕ}$ and $λ_ϕ$ of $J/ψ$ are presented. With the theoretical results we have done the fit to the experimental measurements on yield and polarization for $J/ψ$ hadroproduction simultaneously, and found that the results are coincide with the experimental measurements at the LHC quite well.

Energy Dependence of Direct-Quarkonium Production in pp Collisions from Fixed-Target to LHC Energies: Complete One-Loop Analysis

We compute the energy dependence of the P_T-integrated cross section of directly produced quarkonia in pp collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO), namely up to alpha_s^3, within nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). Our analysis is based on the idea that the P_T-integrated and the P_T-differential cross sections can be treated as two different observables. The colour-octet NRQCD parameters needed to predict the P_T-integrated yield can thus be extracted from the fits of the P_T-differential cross sections at mid and large P_T. For the first time, the total cross section is evaluated in NRQCD at full NLO accuracy using the recent NLO fits of the P_T-differential yields at RHIC, the Tevatron and the LHC. Both the normalisation and the energy dependence of the J/psi, psi' and Upsilon(1S), we obtained, are in disagreement with the data irrespective of the fit method. The same is true if one uses CEM-like colour-octet NRQCD parameters. If, on the contrary, one disregards the colour-octet contribution, the existing data in the TeV range are well described by the alpha_s^3 contribution in the colour-singlet model --which, at alpha_s^4, however shows an unphysical energy dependence. A similar observation is made for eta(c,b). This calls for a full NNLO or for a resummation of the initial-state radiation in this channel. In any case, past claims that colour-octet transitions are dominantly responsible for low-P_T quarkonium production are not supported by our results. This may impact the interpretation of quarkonium suppression in high-energy proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions.

An Updated Study for $Υ$ Production and Polarization at the Tevatron and LHC

Following the nonrelativistic QCD factorization scheme, by taking latest available measurement on $χ_b(3P)$ into consideration, we present an updated study on the yield and polarization of $Υ(1S,2S,3S)$ hadroproduction, and the fractions of $χ_b(mP)$ feed-down in $Υ(nS)$ production at QCD next-to-leading order. In the fitting, three schemes are applied with different choice of $χ_b(mP)$ feed-down ratios and NRQCD factorization scale. The results can explain the measurements on yield very well as in our previous work. The polarization puzzle to $Υ(3S)$ is now solved by considering the $χ_b(3P)$ feed-down contributions. The ratio of $σ[χ_{b2}(1P)]/σ[χ_{b1}(1P)]$ measurements from CMS can also be reproduced in our prediction. Among the different schemes, the results show little difference, but there are sizeable difference for the fitted long-distance color-octet matrix elements. It may bring large uncertainty when the values are applied in other experiments such as in $ee,~ep$ colliders.

h_c Production at Hadron Colliders

In this paper, we present the study of the hadroproduction rate of $h_c$ at next-to-leading order in $α_s$ under the nonrelativisitic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework, using long-distance matrix elements obtained from the fit of $χ_c$ production measurements by LHCb. We consider the problem of NRQCD scale dependence for the first time, and find that, for some experimental conditions, the choice of this scale can substantially affect the final results. Up to this order, color-octet channel still contribute the most part of the production rate.
