Isotropic polarization of compressible flows

The helical absolute equilibrium of a compressible adiabatic flow presents not only the polarization between the two purely helical modes of opposite chiralities but also that between the vortical and acoustic modes, deviating from the equipartition predicted by {\sc Kraichnan, R. H.} [1955 The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America {\bf 27}, 438--441.]. Due to the existence of the acoustic mode, even if all Fourier modes of one chiral sector in the sharpened Helmholtz decomposition [{\sc Moses, H. E.} 1971 SIAM ~(Soc. Ind. Appl. Math.) J. Appl. Math. {\bf 21}, 114--130] are thoroughly truncated, leaving the system with positive definite helicity and energy, negative temperature and the corresponding large-scale concentration of vortical modes are not allowed, unlike the incompressible case.

Local invariants in non-ideal flows of neutral fluids and two-fluid plasmas

Local structures, beyond the well-known `frozen-in' to the barotropic flows of the generalized vorticities, of the two-fluid model of plasma flows are presented. More general non-barotropic situations are also considered. A modified Euler equation [T. Tao, Ann. PDE \textbf{2}, 9 (2016)] is also accordingly analyzed and remarked from the angle of view of two-fluid model, with emphasis on the local structures. And, the local constraints of high-order differential forms such as helicity, among others, find simple formulation for possible applications in modelling the dynamics. Thus, the Cauchy invariants equation [N. Besse and U. Frisch, J. Fluid Mech. \textbf{825}, 412 (2017)] may find practical application in non-ideal flows. Some formal examples are offered to outline the calculations, and particularly interestingly the two-dimensional-three-component (2D3C) or the 2D passive scalar problem presents that a locally invariant $Θ= 2θζ$, with $θ$ and $ζ$ being respectively the scalar value of the `vertical velocity' (or the passive scalar) and the `vertical vorticity', may be used as if it were the spatial density of the globally invariant helicity, providing a Lagrangian prescription to control the latter in some situations of studying its physical effects in rapidly rotating flows (ubiquitous in atmosphere of astrophysical objects) with marked 2D3C vortical modes or in purely 2D passive scalars.

On topological fluid mechanics of non-ideal systems and virtual frozen-in dynamics

Euler and Navier-Stokes have variant systems with dynamical invariance of helicity and thus (weak) topological equivalence, allowing a strong `frozen-in' (to, or, dually, `Lie-carried' by the \textit{virtual} velocity $V$) formulation of the vorticity with a flavor of `inverse Helmholtz theorem'. We remark on the non-ideal (statistical) topological fluid mechanics (TFM) for (1) the Constantin-Iyer formulation of Navier-Stokes, (2) our own extension of the Gallavotti-Cohen type dynamical ensembles of modified Navier-Stokes with energy-helicity constraints and (3) the Galerkin truncated Euler, as the typical case variants with dynamical time reversibility and helicity invariance. Ideal TFM is thus bridged with non-ideal flows. An example virtual (Lie-)carrier of the vorticity in a Galerkin-truncated Euler system is calculated to demonstrate the issue of determining $V$.

Vorticity and helicity decompositions and dynamics with real Schur form of the velocity gradient

The real Schur form (RSF) of a generic velocity gradient field $\nabla \mathbf{u}$ is exploited to expose the structures of flows, in particular our field decomposition resulting in two vorticities with only mutual linkage as the topological content of the global helicity (accordingly decomposed into two equal parts). The local transformation to RSF may indicate alternative (co)rotating frame(s) for specifying the objective argument(s) of the constitutive equation. When $\nabla \mathbf{u}$ is uniformly of RSF in a fixed Cartesian coordinate frame, i.e., $u_x = u_x(x,y)$ and $u_y = u_y(x,y)$, but $u_z = u_z(x,y,z)$, the model, with the decomposed vorticities both frozen-in to $\mathbf{u}$, is in between two-dimensional-three-component (2D3C) and 3D3C ones and may help curing the pathology in the helical 2D3C absolute equilibrium, making the latter effectively work in more realistic situations.

Chirality, extended MHD statistics and solar wind turbulence

We unite the one-flow-dominated-state (OFDS) argument of \citet{MeyrandGaltierPRL12} with the one-chiral-sector-dominated-state (OCSCS) one \citep[][]{hydrochirality} to form a nonlinear extended-magnetohydrodynamics (XMHD) theory for the solar wind turbulence (SWT), \textbf{ranging from the MHD- to subproton-, and even to subelectron-scale regimes} \citep[modifying the theory of][]{AbdelhamidLingamMahajanAPJ16}. Degenerate chiral states in \citet{MiloshevichLingamMorrisonNJP17}'s XMHD absolute equilibria are exposed with helical representation, to offer the basis of replacing the linear wave (of infinitesimal or arbitrarily finite amplitudes) arguments of previous theories with OCSDS. Possible connection of the OFDS-plus-OCSDS theory with the local minimal-energy/stability principle is also discussed.

Disorder and Power-law Tails of DNA Sequence Self-Alignment Concentrations in Molecular Evolution

The self-alignment concentrations, $c(x)$, as functions of the length, $x$, of the identically matching maximal segments in the genomes of a variety of species, typically present power-law tails extending to the largest scales, i.e., $c(x) \propto x^α$, with similar or apparently different negative $α$s ($<-2$). The relevant fundamental processes of molecular evolution are segmental duplication and point mutation, and that recently the stick fragmentation phenomenology has been used to account the neutral evolution. However, disorder is intrinsic to the evolution system and, by freezing it in time (quenching) for the setup of a simple fragmentation model, we obtain decaying, steady-state and the general full time-dependent solutions, all $\propto x^α$ for $x\to \infty$, which is in contrast to the only power-law solution, $x^{-3}$ for $x\to 0$ of the pure model (without disorder). %Other algebraic terms may dominate at intermediate scales, which seems to be confirmed by some species, such as rice. We also present self-alignment results showing more than one scaling regimes, consistent with the theoretical results of the existence of more than one algebraic terms which dominate at different regimes.

On the exact solutions of (magneto)hydrodynamic systems and the superposition principles of nonlinear helical waves

The principles of restricted superposition of circularly polarized arbitrary-amplitude waves for several hydrodynamic type models are illustrated systematically with helical representation in a unified sense. It is shown that the only general modes satisfying arbitrary-amplitude superposition to kill the generic nonlinearity are the mono-wavelength homochiral Beltrami mode and the one-dimensional-two-component stratified vorticity mode, which we call the XYz flow/wave; while, there are other special superposition principles for some specific cases. We try to remark on the possible connections with the geo- and/or astro-physical fluid and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence issues, such as the rotating turbulence, dynamo and solar atmosphere turbulence, especially with the introduction of disorder locally frozen in some (randomly distributed) space-time regions. Recent disagreements about exact solutions of Hall and fully two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics are also settled down by such a treatment. This work complements, by studying the modes which completely kill the triadic interactions or the nonlinearities, previous studies on the thermalization purely from the triadic interactions, and in turn offers alternative perspectives of the nonlinearities.

Purely helical absolute equilibria and chirality of (magneto)fluid turbulence

Left- and right-handed helical modes' statistical absolute equilibria appear \textit{separately}. If both chiral sectors present, one can dominate around its positive pole, which is relevant to the nearly maximally helical (force free for magnetic field) states of turbulence. Pure magnetodynamics (PMD, or electron magnetohydrodynamics --- EMHD), pure hydrodynamics (PHD), and, single-fluid and two-fluid MHDs are studied. Relevant documented data and issues of cascade properties, and, helical and nonhelical dynamos are revisited. We also discuss new scenarios, such as PMD inverse magnetic helicity and forward energy cascades, and, the continuous transition from completely-inverse to partly-inverse-and-partly-forward and to completely-forward energy transfers in PHD.

Note on specific chiral ensembles of statistical hydrodynamics: "order function" for transition of turbulence transfer scenarios

Hydrodynamic helicity signatures the parity symmetry breaking, chirality, of the flow. Statistical hydrodynamics thus respect chirality, as symmetry breaking and restoration are key to their fundamentals, such as the spectral transfer direction and its mechanism. Homochiral sub-system of three-dimensional (3D) Navier-Stokes isotropic turbulence has been numerically realized with helical representation technique to present inverse energy cascade [Biferale et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., {\bf 108}, 164501 (2012)]. The situation is analogous to 2D turbulence where inverse energy cascade, or more generally energy-enstrophy dual cascade scenario, was argued with the help of a negative temperature state of the absolute equilibrium by Kraichnan. Indeed, if the helicity in such a system is taken to be positive without loss of generality, a corresponding negative temperature state can be identified [Zhu et al., J. Fluid Mech., {\bf 739}, 479 (2014)]. Here, for some specific chiral ensembles of turbulence, we show with the corresponding absolute equilibria that even if the helicity distribution over wavenumbers is sign definite, different \textit{ansatzes} of the shape function, defined by the ratio between the specific helicity and energy spectra $s(k)=H(k)/E(k)$, imply distinct transfer directions, and we could have inverse-helicity and forward-energy dual transfers (with, say, $s(k)\propto k^{-2}$ resulting in absolute equilibrium modal spectral density of energy $U(k)=\frac{1}{α+βk^{-2}}$, exactly the enstrophy one of two-dimensional Euler by Kraichan), simultaneous forward transfers (with $s(k)=constant$), or even no simply-directed transfer (with, say, non-monotonic $s(k) \propto \sin^2k$), besides the inverse-energy and forward-helicity dual transfers (with, say, $s(k)=k$ as in the homochiral case).

Dual cascade and its possible variations in magnetized kinetic plasma turbulence

Electrostatic gyrokinetic absolute equilibria with continuum velocity field are obtained through the partition function and through the Green function of the functional integral. The new results justify and explain the prescription for quantization/discretization or taking the continuum limit of velocity. The mistakes in the Appendix D of our earlier work [J.-Z. Zhu and G. W. Hammett, Phys. Plasmas {\bf 17}, 122307 (2010)] are explained and corrected. If the lattice spacing for discretizing velocity is big enough, all the invariants could concentrate at the lowest Fourier modes in a negative-temperature state, which might indicate a possible variation of the dual cascade picture in two-dimension magnetized plasma turbulence.

Comment on "Energy Transfer and Dual Cascade in Kinetic Magnetized Plasma Turbulence"

We argue that the constraints on transfers, given in the Letter [G. Plunk and T. Tatsuno, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 165003 (2011)], but not correctly, do not give the transfer and/or cascade directions which however can be assisted by the absolute equilibria calculated in this Comment, following Kraichnan [R. H. Kraichnan, Phys. Fluids {\bf 102}, 1417 (1967)]. One of the important statements about the transfers with only one or no diagonal component can be shown to be inappropriate according to the fundamental dynamics. Some mathematical mistakes are pointed out.

Fourier-Hankel/Bessel space absolute equilibria of 2D gyrokinetics

Two global invariants of two dimensional gyrokinetics are shown to be "rugged" (still conserved by the dynamics) concerning both Fourier and Hankel/Bessel Galerkin truncations. The truncations are made to keep only a finite range of wavenumber $\textbf{k}$ and the Hankel variable $b$ (or $z$ in the Bessel series). The absolute equilibria are used for the discussion of the spectral transfers in the configuration-velocity scale space of kinetic magnetized plasma turbulence. Some interesting aspects of recent numerical results, which were not well understood, are explained with more satisfaction.

Gyrokinetic statistical absolute equilibrium and turbulence

A paradigm based on the absolute equilibrium of Galerkin-truncated inviscid systems to aid in understanding turbulence [T.-D. Lee, "On some statistical properties of hydrodynamical and magnetohydrodynamical fields," Q. Appl. Math. 10, 69 (1952)] is taken to study gyrokinetic plasma turbulence: A finite set of Fourier modes of the collisionless gyrokinetic equations are kept and the statistical equilibria are calculated; possible implications for plasma turbulence in various situations are discussed. For the case of two spatial and one velocity dimension, in the calculation with discretization also of velocity $v$ with $N$ grid points (where $N+1$ quantities are conserved, corresponding to an energy invariant and $N$ entropy-related invariants), the negative temperature states, corresponding to the condensation of the generalized energy into the lowest modes, are found. This indicates a generic feature of inverse energy cascade. Comparisons are made with some classical results, such as those of Charney-Hasegawa-Mima in the cold-ion limit. There is a universal shape for statistical equilibrium of gyrokinetics in three spatial and two velocity dimensions with just one conserved quantity. Possible physical relevance to turbulence, such as ITG zonal flows, and to a critical balance hypothesis are also discussed.

Intermittency and Thermalization in Turbulence

A dissipation rate, which grows faster than any power of the wave number in Fourier space, may be scaled to lead a hydrodynamic system {\it actually} or {\it potentially} converge to its Galerkin truncation. Actual convergence we name for the asymptotic truncation at a finite wavenumber $k_G$ above which modes have no dynamics; and, we define potential convergence for the truncation at $k_G$ which, however, grows without bound. Both types of convergence can be obtained with the dissipation rate $μ[cosh(k/k_c)-1]$ who behaves as $k^2$ (newtonian) and $\exp\{k/k_c\}$ for small and large $k/k_c$ respectively. Competition physics of cascade, thermalization and dissipation are discussed with numerical Navier-Stokes turbulence, emphasizing on the intermittency growth.

Hyperviscosity, Galerkin truncation and bottlenecks in turbulence

It is shown that the use of a high power $α$ of the Laplacian in the dissipative term of hydrodynamical equations leads asymptotically to truncated inviscid \textit{conservative} dynamics with a finite range of spatial Fourier modes. Those at large wavenumbers thermalize, whereas modes at small wavenumbers obey ordinary viscous dynamics [C. Cichowlas et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 264502 (2005)]. The energy bottleneck observed for finite $α$ may be interpreted as incomplete thermalization. Artifacts arising from models with $α> 1$ are discussed.
