Science with the TianQin Observatory: Preliminary Results on Testing the No-hair Theorem with EMRI

Constituted with a massive black hole and a stellar mass compact object, Extreme Mass Ratio Inspiral (EMRI) events hold unique opportunity for the study of massive black holes, such as by measuring and checking the relations among the mass, spin and quadrupole moment of a massive black hole, putting the no-hair theorem to test. TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave observatory and EMRI is one of its main types of sources. It is important to estimate the capacity of TianQin on testing the no-hair theorem with EMRIs. In this work, we use the analytic kludge waveform with quadrupole moment corrections and study how the quadrupole moment can be constrained with TianQin. We find that TianQin can measure the dimensionless quadrupole moment parameter with accuracy to the level of $10^{-5}$ under suitable scenarios. The choice of the waveform cutoff is found to have significant effect on the result: if the Schwarzschild cutoff is used, the accuracy depends strongly on the mass of the massive black hole, while the spin has negligible impact; if the Kerr cutoff is used, however, the dependence on the spin is more significant. We have also analyzed the cases when TianQin is observing simultaneously with other detectors such as LISA.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary result on extreme-mass-ratio inspirals

Systems consisting of a massive black hole and a stellar-origin compact object (CO), known as extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), are of great significance for space-based gravitational-wave detectors, as they will allow for testing gravitational theories in the strong field regime, and for checking the validity of the black hole no-hair theorem. In this work, we present a calculation of the EMRI rate and parameter estimation capabilities of the TianQin observatory, for various astrophysical models for these sources. We find that TianQin can observe EMRIs involving COs with mass of 10$M_\odot$ up to redshift $\sim2$. We also find that detections could reach tens or hundreds per year in the most optimistic astrophysical scenarios. Intrinsic parameters are expected to be recovered to within fractional errors of $\sim 10^{-6}$, while typical errors on the luminosity distance and sky localization are 10% and 10 deg$^2$, respectively. TianQin observation of EMRIs can also constrain possible deviations from the Kerr quadrupole moment to within fractional errors $\lesssim10^{-4}$. We also find that a network of multiple detectors would allow for improvements in both detection rates (by a factor $\sim 1.5$ -$3$) and in parameter estimation precision (20-fold improvement for the sky localization and fivefold improvement for the other parameters).

Augmented analytic kludge waveform with quadrupole moment correction

One of the most important sources for future space-borne gravitational wave detectors such as TianQin and LISA is EMRI. It happens when a stellar orgin compact object orbiting around a massive black hole(MBH) in the center of galaxies and has many benefits in the study of astrophysics and fundamental theories. One of the most important objectives is to test the no-hair theorem by measuring the quadrupole moment of the MBH. This requires us to estimate the parameters of an EMRI system accurately enough, which means we also need an accurate waveform templet for this process. Based on the fast and fiducial augmented analytic kludge (AAK) waveform for the standard Kerr black hole, we develop a waveform model for a metric with non-Kerr quadrupole moment. We also analyze the accuracy of parameter estimation for different sources and detectors.

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on stellar-mass binary black holes

We study the prospect of using TianQin to detect stellar-mass binary black holes (SBBHs). We estimate the expected detection number as well as the precision of parameter estimation on SBBH inspirals, using five different population models. We note TianQin can possibly detect a few SBBH inspirals with signal to noise ratios greater than 12; lowering the threshold and combining multiple detectors can both boost the detection number. The source parameters can be recovered with good precision for most events above the detection threshold. For example, the precision of the merger time most likely occurs near 1s, making it possible to guide the detection of the ground-based detectors, the precision of the eccentricity $e_0$ most likely occurs near $10^{-4}$, making it possible to distinguish the formation channels, and the precision of the mass parameter is better than $10^{-6}$ in general and most likely occurs near $10^{-7}$. We note, in particular, that for a typical merger event, the error volume is likely to be small enough to contain only the host galaxy, which could greatly help in the study of gravitational wave cosmology and relevant studies through the multimessenger observation.

Constraining modified gravity with ringdown signals: an explicit example

An explicit example is found showing how a modified theory of gravity can be constrained with the ringdown signals from merger of binary black holes. This has been made possible by the fact that the modified gravitational theory considered in this work has an exact rotating black hole solution and that the corresponding quasi-normal modes can be calculated. With these, we obtain the possible constraint that can be placed on the parameter describing the deviation of this particular alternative theory from general relativity by using the detection of the ringdown signals from binary black holes's merger with future space-based gravitational wave detectors.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on testing the no-hair theorem with ringdown signals

We study the capability of the space-based gravitational wave observatory TianQin to test the no-hair theorem of General Relativity, using the ringdown signal from the coalescence of massive black hole binaries. We parameterize the ringdown signal by the four strongest quasinormal modes and estimate the signal to noise ratio for various source parameters. We consider constraints both from single detections and from all the events combined throughout the lifetime of the observatory, for different astrophysical models. We find that at the end of the mission, TianQin will have constrained deviations of the frequency and decay time of the dominant 22 mode from the general relativistic predictions to within 0.2% and 1.5% respectively, the frequencies of the subleading modes can be also constrained within 0.3%. We also find that TianQin and LISA are highly complementary, by virtue of their different frequency windows. Indeed, LISA can best perform ringdown tests for black hole masses in excess of $\sim 3\times 10^6 M_\odot$, while TianQin is best suited for lower masses.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry for Vector Field on Various Black Hole Backgrounds

Hidden conformal symmetries of scalar field on various black hole backgrounds have been investigated for years, but whether those features holds for other fields are still open questions. Recently, with proper assumptions, Lunin achieves to the separation of variables for Maxwell equations on Kerr background. In this paper, with that equation, we find that hidden conformal symmetry appears at near region under low frequency limit. We also extended those results to vector field on Kerr-(A)dS and Kerr-NUT-(A)dS backgrounds, then hidden conformal symmetry also appears if we focusing on the near-horizon region at low frequency limit.

Kinematic Space and Wormholes

The kinematic space could play a key role in constructing the bulk geometry from dual CFT. In this paper, we study the kinematic space from geometric points of view, without resorting to differential entropy. We find that the kinematic space could be intrinsically defined in the embedding space. For each oriented geodesic in the Poincaré disk, there is a corresponding point in the kinematic space. This point is the tip of the causal diamond of the disk whose intersection with the Poincaré disk determines the geodesic. In this geometric construction, the causal structure in the kinematic space can be seen clearly. Moreover, we find that every transformation in the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ leads to a geodesic in the kinematic space. In particular, for a hyperbolic transformation defining a BTZ black hole, it is a timelike geodesic in the kinematic space. We show that the horizon length of the static BTZ black hole could be computed by the geodesic length of corresponding points in the kinematic space. Furthermore, we discuss the fundamental regions in the kinematic space for the BTZ blackhole and multi-boundary wormholes.

Aspects of Warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ Correspondence

In this paper we apply the thermodynamics method to investigate the holographic pictures for the BTZ black hole, the spacelike and the null warped black holes in three-dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) and new massive gravity (NMG). Even though there are higher derivative terms in these theories, the thermodynamics method is still effective. It gives consistent results with the ones obtained by using asymptotical symmetry group (ASG) analysis. In doing the ASG analysis we develop a brute-force realization of the Barnich-Brandt-Compere formalism with Mathematica code, which also allows us to calculate the masses and the angular momenta of the black holes. In particular, we propose the warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence in the new massive gravity, which states that quantum gravity in the warped spacetime could holographically dual to a two-dimensional CFT with $c_R=c_L=\f{24}{Gm\b^2\sr{2(21-4\b^2)}}$.

Classical Aspects of Higher Spin Topologically Massive Gravity

We study the classical solutions of three dimensional topologically massive gravity (TMG) and its higher spin generalization, in the first order formulation. The action of higher spin TMG has been proposed in arXiv:1110.5113 to be of a Chern-Simons-like form. The equations of motion are more complicated than the ones in pure higher spin AdS$_3$ gravity, but are still tractable. As all the solutions in higher spin gravity are automatically the solutions of higher spin TMG, we focus on other solutions. We manage to find the AdS pp-wave solutions with higher spin hair, and find that the nonvanishing higher spin fields may or may not modify the pp-wave geometry. In order to discuss the warped spacetime, we introduce the notion of special Killing vector, which is defined to be the symmetry on the frame-like fields. We reproduce various warped spacetimes of TMG in our framework, with the help of special Killing vectors.

Quasinormal Modes and Hidden Conformal Symmetry of Warped dS$_3$ Black Hole

In this paper, we analytically calculate the quasinormal modes of scalar, vector, tensor, and spinor perturbations of the warped dS$_3$ black hole. There are two horizons for the warped dS$_3$ black hole, namely, the black hole horizon $r_b$ and the cosmological horizon $r_c$. In the calculation, we impose the ingoing boundary condition at the black hole horizon and the outgoing boundary condition at the cosmological horizon. We also investigate the hidden conformal symmetry of the warped dS$_3$ black hole in the region between the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon $r_b<r<r_c$. We use the hidden conformal symmetry to construct the quasinormal modes in an algebraic way and find that the results agree with the analytically ones. It turns out that the frequencies of the quasinormal modes could be identified with the poles in the thermal boundary-boundary correlators.
