TRIS-HAR: Transmissive Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-assisted Cognitive Wireless Human Activity Recognition Using State Space Models

Human activity recognition (HAR) using radio frequency (RF) signals has garnered considerable attention for its applications in smart environments. However, traditional systems often struggle with limited independent channels between transmitters and receivers, multipath fading, and environmental noise, which particularly degrades performance in through-the-wall scenarios. In this paper, we present a transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (TRIS)-assisted through-the-wall human activity recognition (TRIS-HAR) system. The system employs TRIS technology to actively reshape wireless signal propagation, creating multiple independent paths to enhance signal clarity and improve recognition accuracy in complex indoor settings. Additionally, we propose the Human intelligence Mamba (HiMamba), an advanced state space model that captures temporal and frequency-based information for precise activity recognition. HiMamba achieves state-of-the-art performance on two public datasets, demonstrating superior accuracy. Extensive experiments indicate that the TRIS-HAR system improves recognition performance from 85.00% to 98.06% in laboratory conditions and maintains high performance across various environments. This approach offers a robust solution for enhancing RF-based HAR, with promising applications in smart home and elderly care systems.

Learning-Based Adaptive Dynamic Routing with Stability Guarantee for a Single-Origin-Single-Destination Network

We consider learning-based adaptive dynamic routing for a single-origin-single-destination queuing network with stability guarantees. Specifically, we study a class of generalized shortest path policies that can be parameterized by only two constants via a piecewise-linear function. Using the Foster-Lyapunov stability theory, we develop a criterion on the parameters to ensure mean boundedness of the traffic state. Then, we develop a policy iteration algorithm that learns the parameters from realized sample paths. Importantly, the piecewise-linear function is both integrated into the Lyapunov function for stability analysis and used as a proxy of the value function for policy iteration; hence, stability is inherently ensured for the learned policy. Finally, we demonstrate via a numerical example that the proposed algorithm learns a near-optimal routing policy with an acceptable optimality gap but significantly higher computational efficiency compared with a standard neural network-based algorithm.

Measurement of microwave polarization using two polarization orthogonal local microwave electric fields in a Rydberg atom-based mixer

We propose and demonstrate a novel method for measuring the polarization direction of a microwave electric field in a single measurement using a Rydberg atom-based mixer with two orthogonally polarized local microwave electric fields. Furthermore, introducing a weak static magnetic field enables the utilization of the Zeeman effect and exploitation of polarization asymmetry. This distinction allows for determining the polarization direction of the microwave field isθor180°-θwithin the 0 to 180 degree range. This is the first real-time measurement of microwave polarization within 0 to 180 degrees, crucial for microwave sensing and information transmission.

TRGR: Transmissive RIS-aided Gait Recognition Through Walls

Gait recognition with radio frequency (RF) signals enables many potential applications requiring accurate identification. However, current systems require individuals to be within a line-of-sight (LOS) environment and struggle with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when signals traverse concrete and thick walls. To address these challenges, we present TRGR, a novel transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided gait recognition system. TRGR can recognize human identities through walls using only the magnitude measurements of channel state information (CSI) from a pair of transceivers. Specifically, by leveraging transmissive RIS alongside a configuration alternating optimization algorithm, TRGR enhances wall penetration and signal quality, enabling accurate gait recognition. Furthermore, a residual convolution network (RCNN) is proposed as the backbone network to learn robust human information. Experimental results confirm the efficacy of transmissive RIS, highlighting the significant potential of transmissive RIS in enhancing RF-based gait recognition systems. Extensive experiment results show that TRGR achieves an average accuracy of 97.88\% in identifying persons when signals traverse concrete walls, demonstrating the effectiveness and robustness of TRGR.

Design and Optimization on Successive RIS-assisted Multi-hop Wireless Communications

As an emerging wireless communication technology, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a basic choice for providing signal coverage services in scenarios with dense obstacles or long tunnels through multi-hop configurations. Conventional works of literature mainly focus on alternating optimization or single-beam calculation in RIS phase configuration, which is limited in considering energy efficiency, and often suffers from inaccurate channel state information (CSI), poor convergence, and high computational complexity. This paper addresses the design and optimization challenges for successive RIS-assisted multi-hop systems. Specifically, we establish a general model for multi-hop communication based on the relationship between the input and output electric fields within each RIS. Meanwhile, we derive the half-power beamwidth of the RIS-reflected beams, considering the beam direction. Leveraging these models and derivations, we propose deployment optimization and beam optimization strategies for multi-hop systems, which feature high aperture efficiency and significant gains in signal power. Simulation and prototype experiment results validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed systems and methods.

Feature-prompting GBMSeg: One-Shot Reference Guided Training-Free Prompt Engineering for Glomerular Basement Membrane Segmentation

Assessment of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is crucial for diagnosing chronic kidney disease (CKD). The lack of domain-independent automatic segmentation tools for the GBM necessitates an AI-based solution to automate the process. In this study, we introduce GBMSeg, a training-free framework designed to automatically segment the GBM in TEM images guided only by a one-shot annotated reference. Specifically, GBMSeg first exploits the robust feature matching capabilities of the pretrained foundation model to generate initial prompt points, then introduces a series of novel automatic prompt engineering techniques across the feature and physical space to optimize the prompt scheme. Finally, GBMSeg employs a class-agnostic foundation segmentation model with the generated prompt scheme to obtain accurate segmentation results. Experimental results on our collected 2538 TEM images confirm that GBMSeg achieves superior segmentation performance with a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 87.27% using only one labeled reference image in a training-free manner, outperforming recently proposed one-shot or few-shot methods. In summary, GBMSeg introduces a distinctive automatic prompt framework that facilitates robust domain-independent segmentation performance without training, particularly advancing the automatic prompting of foundation segmentation models for medical images. Future work involves automating the thickness measurement of segmented GBM and quantifying pathological indicators, holding significant potential for advancing pathology assessments in clinical applications. Multi-user ISAC through Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces: New Algorithms and Experiments

This paper investigates a Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM)-assisted Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) system. An extended target model is considered, where the BS aims to estimate the complete target response matrix relative to the SIM. Under the constraints of minimum Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) for the communication users (CUs) and maximum transmit power, we jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the base station (BS) and the end-to-end transmission matrix of the SIM, to minimize the Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) for target estimation. Effective algorithms such as the alternating optimization (AO) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) are employed to solve the non-convex SINR-constrained CRB minimization problem. Finally, we design and build an experimental platform for SIM, and evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms for communication and sensing tasks.

Enhanced LFTSformer: A Novel Long-Term Financial Time Series Prediction Model Using Advanced Feature Engineering and the DS Encoder Informer Architecture

This study presents a groundbreaking model for forecasting long-term financial time series, termed the Enhanced LFTSformer. The model distinguishes itself through several significant innovations: (1) VMD-MIC+FE Feature Engineering: The incorporation of sophisticated feature engineering techniques, specifically through the integration of Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), Maximal Information Coefficient (MIC), and feature engineering (FE) methods, enables comprehensive perception and extraction of deep-level features from complex and variable financial datasets. (2) DS Encoder Informer: The architecture of the original Informer has been modified by adopting a Stacked Informer structure in the encoder, and an innovative introduction of a multi-head decentralized sparse attention mechanism, referred to as the Distributed Informer. This modification has led to a reduction in the number of attention blocks, thereby enhancing both the training accuracy and speed. (3) GC Enhanced Adam \& Dynamic Loss Function: The deployment of a Gradient Clipping-enhanced Adam optimization algorithm and a dynamic loss function represents a pioneering approach within the domain of financial time series prediction. This novel methodology optimizes model performance and adapts more dynamically to evolving data patterns. Systematic experimentation on a range of benchmark stock market datasets demonstrates that the Enhanced LFTSformer outperforms traditional machine learning models and other Informer-based architectures in terms of prediction accuracy, adaptability, and generality. Furthermore, the paper identifies potential avenues for future enhancements, with a particular focus on the identification and quantification of pivotal impacting events and news. This is aimed at further refining the predictive efficacy of the model.

On Joint Convergence of Traffic State and Weight Vector in Learning-Based Dynamic Routing with Value Function Approximation

Learning-based approaches are increasingly popular for traffic control problems. However, these approaches are applied typically as black boxes with limited theoretical guarantees and interpretability. In this paper, we consider the theory of dynamic routing over parallel servers, a representative traffic control task, using semi-gradient on-policy control algorithm, a representative reinforcement learning method. We consider a linear value function approximation on an infinite state space; a Lyapunov function is also derived from the approximator. In particular, the structure of the approximator naturally makes possible idling policies, which is an interesting and useful advantage over existing dynamic routing schemes. We show that the convergence of the approximation weights is coupled with the convergence of the traffic state. We show that if the system is stabilizable, then (i) the weight vector converges to a bounded region, and (ii) the traffic state is bounded in the mean. We also empirically show that the proposed algorithm is computationally efficient with an insignificant optimality gap.

Evolutionary Search and Theoretical Study of Silicene Grain Boundaries' Mechanical Properties

Defects such as grain boundaries (GBs) are almost inevitable during the synthesis process of 2D materials. To take advantage of the fascinating properties of 2D materials, understanding the nature and impact of various GB structures on the pristine 2D sheet is crucial. In this work, using an evolutionary algorithm search, we predict a wide variety of silicene GB structures with very different atomic structures compared to those found in graphene or hexagonal boron-nitride. Twenty-one GBs with the lowest energy were validated by density functional theory (DFT) - a majority of which were previously unreported to our best knowledge. Based on the diversity of the GB predictions, we found that the formation energy and mechanical properties can be dramatically altered by adatoms positions within a GB and certain types of atomic structures, such as four-atom rings. To study the mechanical behavior of these GBs, we apply strain to the GB structures stepwise and use DFT calculations to investigate the mechanical properties of 9 representative structures. It is observed that GB structures based on pentagon-heptagon pairs are likely to have similar or higher in-plane stiffness and strength compared with the zigzag orientation of pristine silicene. However, an adatom located at the hollow site of a heptagon ring can significantly deteriorate the mechanical strength. For all the structures, the in-plane stiffness and strength were found to decrease with increasing formation energy. For the failure behavior of GB structures, it was found that GB structures based on pentagon-heptagon pairs have failure behavior similar to graphene. We also found that the GB structures with atoms positioned outside of the 2D plane tend to experience phase transitions before failure. Utilizing the evolutionary algorithm, we locate diverse silicene GBs and obtain useful information for their mechanical properties.

Design and Prototyping of Transmissive RIS-Aided Wireless Communication

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) exhibit promising enhancements in coverage and data rates for wireless communication systems, particularly in the context of 5G and beyond. This paper introduces a novel approach by focusing on the design and prototyping of a transmissive RIS, contrasting with existing research predominantly centered on reflective RIS. The achievement of 1-bit transmissive RIS through the antisymmetry configuration of the two PIN diodes, nearly uniform transmission magnitudes but inversed phase states in a wide band can be obtained. A transmissive RIS prototype consisting of 16 $\times$ 16 elements is meticulously designed, fabricated, and subjected to measurement to validate the proposed design. The results demonstrate that the proposed RIS unit cell achieves effective 1-bit phase tuning with minimal insertion loss and a transmission bandwidth of 3 dB exceeding $20\%$ at 5.8GHz. By dynamically modulating the quantized code distributions on the RIS, it becomes possible to construct scanning beams. The experimental outcomes of the RIS-assisted communication system validate that, in comparison to scenarios without RIS, the signal receiving power experiences an increase of approximately 7dB when RIS is deployed to overcome obstacles. This underscores the potential applicability of mobile RIS in practical communication.

TRTAR: Transmissive RIS-assisted Through-the-wall Human Activity Recognition

Device-free human activity recognition plays a pivotal role in wireless sensing. However, current systems often fail to accommodate signal transmission through walls or necessitate dedicated noise removal algorithms. To overcome these limitations, we introduce TRTAR: a device-free passive human activity recognition system integrated with a transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). TRTAR eliminates the necessity for dedicated devices or noise removal algorithms, while specifically addressing signal propagation through walls. Unlike existing approaches, TRTAR solely employs a transmissive RIS at the transmitter or receiver without modifying the inherent hardware structure. Experimental results demonstrate that TRTAR attains an average accuracy of 98.13% when signals traverse concrete walls.

ADA-YOLO: Dynamic Fusion of YOLOv8 and Adaptive Heads for Precise Image Detection and Diagnosis

Object detection and localization are crucial tasks for biomedical image analysis, particularly in the field of hematology where the detection and recognition of blood cells are essential for diagnosis and treatment decisions. While attention-based methods have shown significant progress in object detection in various domains, their application in medical object detection has been limited due to the unique challenges posed by medical imaging datasets. To address this issue, we propose ADA-YOLO, a light-weight yet effective method for medical object detection that integrates attention-based mechanisms with the YOLOv8 architecture. Our proposed method leverages the dynamic feature localisation and parallel regression for computer vision tasks through \textit{adaptive head} module. Empirical experiments were conducted on the Blood Cell Count and Detection (BCCD) dataset to evaluate the effectiveness of ADA-YOLO. The results showed that ADA-YOLO outperforms the YOLOv8 model in mAP (mean average precision) on the BCCD dataset by using more than 3 times less space than YOLOv8. This indicates that our proposed method is effective. Moreover, the light-weight nature of our proposed method makes it suitable for deployment in resource-constrained environments such as mobile devices or edge computing systems. which could ultimately lead to improved diagnosis and treatment outcomes in the field of hematology.

Intelligent Multi-Modal Sensing-Communication Integration: Synesthesia of Machines

In the era of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is recognized as a promising solution to upgrade the physical system by endowing wireless communications with sensing capability. Existing ISAC is mainly oriented to static scenarios with radio-frequency (RF) sensors being the primary participants, thus lacking a comprehensive environment feature characterization and facing a severe performance bottleneck in dynamic environments. To date, extensive surveys on ISAC have been conducted but are limited to summarizing RF-based radar sensing. Currently, some research efforts have been devoted to exploring multi-modal sensing-communication integration but still lack a comprehensive review. Therefore, we generalize the concept of ISAC inspired by human synesthesia to establish a unified framework of intelligent multi-modal sensing-communication integration and provide a comprehensive review under such a framework in this paper. The so-termed Synesthesia of Machines (SoM) gives the clearest cognition of such intelligent integration and details its paradigm for the first time. We commence by justifying the necessity of the new paradigm. Subsequently, we offer a definition of SoM and zoom into the detailed paradigm, which is summarized as three operation modes. To facilitate SoM research, we overview the prerequisite of SoM research, i.e., mixed multi-modal (MMM) datasets. Then, we introduce the mapping relationships between multi-modal sensing and communications. Afterward, we cover the technological review on SoM-enhance-based and SoM-concert-based applications. To corroborate the superiority of SoM, we also present simulation results related to dual-function waveform and predictive beamforming design. Finally, we propose some potential directions to inspire future research efforts.
