Satellite gravity constraints on inner core viscosity and LLVPs density anomalies

Constraining the physical properties of Earth's deep interior, particularly the viscosity of the solid inner core and the density structure of large low-velocity provinces (LLVPs), remains a major challenge in geophysics. Here we develop a unified dynamical framework that combines mantle-inner core gravitational coupling (MICG) with torsional oscillations in the fluid outer core and show that their interaction can produce a distinct and testable geodetic signature. Guided by this prediction, we analyze satellite gravity observations together with independent corrections for surface mass variability. We identify a robust approximately 6-year signal in the Stokes coefficient Delta S22, while no corresponding stationary signal is detected in Delta C22. A signal with the same periodicity is independently detected in length-of-day variations (Delta LOD), and the two signals exhibit a near anti-phase relationship. Interpreting this coupled signature within the proposed framework allows us to constrain the inner core viscosity to approximately 4.6 (+/- 1.8) x 10^16 Pa s and the equatorial relief of the inner core boundary to a semi-axis difference of about 200 +/- 70 m. The inversion further indicates mean density anomalies of +5.5 (+/- 0.6) per mil at the base of LLVPs. These results indicate that satellite gravimetry provides a direct observational window into deep-Earth dynamics and the physical properties of Earth's deep interior.

VEDAL: Variational Error-Driven Asynchronous Learning for 3D Gaussian Splatting Pruning

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) achieves remarkable novel view synthesis quality with real-time rendering, yet suffers from excessive memory consumption due to millions of Gaussian primitives. Existing pruning methods rely on heuristic importance scores or synchronous batch updates, leading to suboptimal compression and training instability. We propose VEDAL, a principled framework that formulates Gaussian pruning as variational free energy minimization. Our approach introduces (1) a prediction-error gating mechanism that asynchronously activates pruning based on per-Gaussian reconstruction uncertainty, and (2) a variational uncertainty head that models pruning decisions as latent variables with learnable priors. The free energy objective naturally balances reconstruction fidelity against model complexity through an information-theoretic lens. Extensive experiments on Mip-NeRF 360, Tanks&Temples, and Deep Blending demonstrate that VEDAL achieves 5.2x compression with only 0.31 dB PSNR drop, outperforming PUP 3D-GS by +0.05 dB at a higher compression ratio and LightGaussian by +0.35 dB at comparable quality, while maintaining real-time rendering at 185 FPS.

Satellite observations reveal shorter periodic inner core oscillation

Detecting the Earth's inner core motions relative to the mantle presents a considerable challenge due to their indirect accessibility. Seismological observations initially provided evidence for differential/super-rotation of the inner core, but recently demonstrated a possibly about 70-year periodic oscillation. The contrasting results underscore the ongoing enigma surrounding inner core motion, leaving debates unresolved, including the precise oscillate period. In parallel to seismic observations, satellite geodesy has accumulated decades of global high-precision records, providing a novel avenue to probe inner core motions. Here, we detect an about 6-year oscillation from the gravitational field degree-2 order-2 Stokes coefficients derived from satellite observations, and find it has a unique phase correlation with the about 6-year signal in the Earth's length-of-day variations. This correlation is attributed to an inner core oscillation which is controlled by the gravitational coupling between the inner core and lower mantle (mainly due to the density heterogeneity of the two large low-velocity provinces; LLVPs). That is, we independently corroborate the inner core periodic oscillation, albeit with a significantly shorter period than previously suggested. Our findings demonstrate the dense layer of the LLVPs (mean density anomalies of about +0.9 percent at the bottom), consistent with inversions from tidal tomography and Stoneley modes. Furthermore, our research reveals equatorial topographic undulations of about 187 m at the inner core boundary.

Forestpest-YOLO: A High-Performance Detection Framework for Small Forestry Pests

Detecting agricultural pests in complex forestry environments using remote sensing imagery is fundamental for ecological preservation, yet it is severely hampered by practical challenges. Targets are often minuscule, heavily occluded, and visually similar to the cluttered background, causing conventional object detection models to falter due to the loss of fine-grained features and an inability to handle extreme data imbalance. To overcome these obstacles, this paper introduces Forestpest-YOLO, a detection framework meticulously optimized for the nuances of forestry remote sensing. Building upon the YOLOv8 architecture, our framework introduces a synergistic trio of innovations. We first integrate a lossless downsampling module, SPD-Conv, to ensure that critical high-resolution details of small targets are preserved throughout the network. This is complemented by a novel cross-stage feature fusion block, CSPOK, which dynamically enhances multi-scale feature representation while suppressing background noise. Finally, we employ VarifocalLoss to refine the training objective, compelling the model to focus on high-quality and hard-to-classify samples. Extensive experiments on our challenging, self-constructed ForestPest dataset demonstrate that Forestpest-YOLO achieves state-of-the-art performance, showing marked improvements in detecting small, occluded pests and significantly outperforming established baseline models.

An innovation-based cycle-slip, multipath estimation, detection and mitigation method for tightly coupled GNSS/INS/Vision navigation in urban areas

Precise, consistent, and reliable positioning is crucial for a multitude of uses. In order to achieve high precision global positioning services, multi-sensor fusion techniques, such as the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/Inertial Navigation System (INS)/Vision integration system, combine the strengths of various sensors. This technique is essential for localization in complex environments and has been widely used in the mass market. However, frequent signal deterioration and blocking in urban environments exacerbates the degradation of GNSS positioning and negatively impacts the performance of the multi-sensor integration system. For GNSS pseudorange and carrier phase observation data in the urban environment, we offer an innovation-based cycle slip/multipath estimation, detection, and mitigation (I-EDM) method to reduce the influence of multipath effects and cycle slips on location induced by obstruction in urban settings. The method obtains the innovations of GNSS observations with the cluster analysis method. Then the innovations are used to detect the cycle slips and multipath. Compared with the residual-based method, the innovation-based method avoids the residual overfitting caused by the least square method, resulting in better detection of outliers within the GNSS observations. The vehicle tests carried out in urban settings verify the proposed approach. Experimental results indicate that the accuracy of 0.23m, 0.11m, and 0.31m in the east, north and up components can be achieved by the GNSS/INS/Vision tightly coupled system with the I-EDM method, which has a maximum of 21.6% improvement when compared with the residual-based EDM (R-EDM) method.

URS-NeRF: Unordered Rolling Shutter Bundle Adjustment for Neural Radiance Fields

We propose a novel rolling shutter bundle adjustment method for neural radiance fields (NeRF), which utilizes the unordered rolling shutter (RS) images to obtain the implicit 3D representation. Existing NeRF methods suffer from low-quality images and inaccurate initial camera poses due to the RS effect in the image, whereas, the previous method that incorporates the RS into NeRF requires strict sequential data input, limiting its widespread applicability. In constant, our method recovers the physical formation of RS images by estimating camera poses and velocities, thereby removing the input constraints on sequential data. Moreover, we adopt a coarse-to-fine training strategy, in which the RS epipolar constraints of the pairwise frames in the scene graph are used to detect the camera poses that fall into local minima. The poses detected as outliers are corrected by the interpolation method with neighboring poses. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method over state-of-the-art works and demonstrate that the reconstruction of 3D representations is not constrained by the requirement of video sequence input.

Global geoid model GGM2022

We provide an updated 5 $^\prime $ $\times $ 5 $^\prime $ global geoid model GGM2022, which is determined based on the shallow layer method (Shen method). First, we choose an inner surface $Γ$ below the EGM2008 global geoid by 15 m, and the layer bounded by the inner surface $Γ$ and the Earth's geographical surface $S$ is referred to as the shallow layer. The Earth's geographical surface $S$ is determined by the digital topographic model DTM2006.0 combining with the DNSC2008 mean sea surface. Second, we formulate the 3D shallow mass layer model using the refined 5 $^\prime $ $\times $ 5 $^\prime $ crust density model CRUST$_-$re , which { is an improved 5 $^\prime $ $\times $ 5 $^\prime $ density model of the CRUST2.0 or CRUST1.0 with taking into account the corrections of the areas covered by ice sheets and the land-ocean crossing regions. Third, based on the shallow mass layer model and the gravity field EGM2008 that is defined in the region outside the Earth's geographical surface $S$, we determine the gravity field model EGM2008s that is defined in the whole region outside the inner surface $Γ$, where the definition domain of the gravity field is extended from the domain outside $S$ to the domain outside $Γ$. Fourth, based on the gravity field EGM2008s and the geodetic equation $W(P)=W_0$ (where $W_0$ is the geopotential constant on the geoid and $P$ is the point on the geoid $G$), we determine a 5 $^\prime $ $\times $ 5 $^\prime $ global geoid, which is referred to as GGM2022. Comparisons show that the GGM2022 fits the globally available GPS/leveling data better than EGM2008 global geoid in the USA, Europe and the western part of China.

PVI-DSO: Leveraging Planar Regularities for Direct Sparse Visual-Inertial Odometry

The monocular visual-inertial odometry (VIO) based on the direct method can leverage all available pixels in the image to simultaneously estimate the camera motion and reconstruct the denser map of the scene in real time. However, the direct method is sensitive to photometric changes, which can be compensated by introducing geometric information in the environment. In this paper, we propose a monocular direct sparse visual-inertial odometry, which exploits the planar regularities (PVI-DSO). Our system detects the planar regularities from the 3D mesh built on the estimated map points. To improve the pose estimation accuracy with the geometric information, a tightly coupled coplanar constraint expression is used to express photometric error in the direct method. Additionally, to improve the optimization efficiency, we elaborately derive the analytical Jacobian of the linearization form for the coplanar constraint. Finally, the inertial measurement error, coplanar point photometric error, non-coplanar photometric error, and prior error are added into the optimizer, which simultaneously improves the pose estimation accuracy and mesh itself. We verified the performance of the whole system on simulation and real-world datasets. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that our system outperforms the state-of-the-art counterparts.

MAMDR: A Model Agnostic Learning Method for Multi-Domain Recommendation

Large-scale e-commercial platforms in the real-world usually contain various recommendation scenarios (domains) to meet demands of diverse customer groups. Multi-Domain Recommendation (MDR), which aims to jointly improve recommendations on all domains and easily scales to thousands of domains, has attracted increasing attention from practitioners and researchers. Existing MDR methods usually employ a shared structure and several specific components to respectively leverage reusable features and domain-specific information. However, data distribution differs across domains, making it challenging to develop a general model that can be applied to all circumstances. Additionally, during training, shared parameters often suffer from the domain conflict while specific parameters are inclined to overfitting on data sparsity domains. we first present a scalable MDR platform served in Taobao that enables to provide services for thousands of domains without specialists involved. To address the problems of MDR methods, we propose a novel model agnostic learning framework, namely MAMDR, for the multi-domain recommendation. Specifically, we first propose a Domain Negotiation (DN) strategy to alleviate the conflict between domains. Then, we develop a Domain Regularization (DR) to improve the generalizability of specific parameters by learning from other domains. We integrate these components into a unified framework and present MAMDR, which can be applied to any model structure to perform multi-domain recommendation. Finally, we present a large-scale implementation of MAMDR in the Taobao application and construct various public MDR benchmark datasets which can be used for following studies. Extensive experiments on both benchmark datasets and industry datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and generalizability of MAMDR.

A General Method For Automatic Discovery of Powerful Interactions In Click-Through Rate Prediction

Modeling powerful interactions is a critical challenge in Click-through rate (CTR) prediction, which is one of the most typical machine learning tasks in personalized advertising and recommender systems. Although developing hand-crafted interactions is effective for a small number of datasets, it generally requires laborious and tedious architecture engineering for extensive scenarios. In recent years, several neural architecture search (NAS) methods have been proposed for designing interactions automatically. However, existing methods only explore limited types and connections of operators for interaction generation, leading to low generalization ability. To address these problems, we propose a more general automated method for building powerful interactions named AutoPI. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: AutoPI adopts a more general search space in which the computational graph is generalized from existing network connections, and the interactive operators in the edges of the graph are extracted from representative hand-crafted works. It allows searching for various powerful feature interactions to produce higher AUC and lower Logloss in a wide variety of applications. Besides, AutoPI utilizes a gradient-based search strategy for exploration with a significantly low computational cost. Experimentally, we evaluate AutoPI on a diverse suite of benchmark datasets, demonstrating the generalizability and efficiency of AutoPI over hand-crafted architectures and state-of-the-art NAS algorithms.
