The eccentricity enhancement effect of intermediate-mass-ratio-inspirals: dark matter and black hole mass

It was found that the dark matter (DM) in the intermediate-mass-ratio-inspiral (IMRI) system has a significant enhancement effect on the orbital eccentricity of the stellar massive compact object, such as a black hole (BH), which may be tested by space-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors including LISA, Taiji and Tianqin in future observations \citep{2019PhRvD.100d3013Y}. In this paper, we will study the enhancement effect of the eccentricity for an IMRI under different DM density profiles and center BH masses. Our results are as follows: $(1)$ in terms of the general DM spike distribution, the enhancement of the eccentricity is basically consistent with the power-law profile, which indicates that it is reasonable to adopt the power-law profile; $(2)$ in the presence of DM spike, the different masses of the center BH will affect the eccentricity, which provides a new way for us to detect the BH's mass; $(3)$ considering the change of the eccentricity in the presence and absence of DM spike, we find that it is possible to distinguish DM models by measuring the eccentricity at the scale of about $10^{5} GM/c^{2}$.

Black hole magnetospheres in the Born-Infeld theory

We study the force-free electrodynamics on rotating black holes in the Born-Infeld (BI) effective theory. The stream equation describing a steady and axisymmetric magnetosphere is derived. From its near-horizon behavior, we obtain the modified Znajek regularity condition, with which we find that the horizon resistivity in the BI theory is generally not a constant. As expected, the outer boundary condition far away from the hole remains unchanged. In terms of the conditions at both boundaries, we derive the perturbative solution of split monopole in the slow rotation limit. It is interesting to realise that the correction to the solution relies not only on the parameter in the BI theory, but also on the radius (or the mass) of the hole. We also show that the quantum effects can undermine the energy extraction process of the magnetosphere in the non-linear theory and the extraction rate gets the maximum in the Maxwell theory.

A flexible method for estimating luminosity functions via Kernel Density Estimation

We propose a flexible method for estimating luminosity functions (LFs) based on kernel density estimation (KDE), the most popular nonparametric density estimation approach developed in modern statistics, to overcome issues surrounding binning of LFs. One challenge in applying KDE to LFs is how to treat the boundary bias problem, since astronomical surveys usually obtain truncated samples predominantly due to the flux-density limits of surveys. We use two solutions, the transformation KDE method ($\hatϕ_{\mathrm{t}}$), and the transformation-reflection KDE method ($\hatϕ_{\mathrm{tr}}$) to reduce the boundary bias. We develop a new likelihood cross-validation criterion for selecting optimal bandwidths, based on which, the posterior probability distribution of bandwidth and transformation parameters for $\hatϕ_{\mathrm{t}}$ and $\hatϕ_{\mathrm{tr}}$ are derived within a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling procedure. The simulation result shows that $\hatϕ_{\mathrm{t}}$ and $\hatϕ_{\mathrm{tr}}$ perform better than the traditional binned method, especially in the sparse data regime around the flux-limit of a survey or at the bright-end of the LF. To further improve the performance of our KDE methods, we develop the transformation-reflection adaptive KDE approach ($\hatϕ_{\mathrm{tra}}$). Monte Carlo simulations suggest that it has a good stability and reliability in performance, and is around an order of magnitude more accurate than using the binned method. By applying our adaptive KDE method to a quasar sample, we find that it achieves estimates comparable to the rigorous determination by a previous work, while making far fewer assumptions about the LF. The KDE method we develop has the advantages of both parametric and non-parametric methods.

A self-consistent leptonic-hadronic interpretation of the electromagnetic and neutrino emissions from blazar TXS 0506+056

The potential association between the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the neutrino event IceCube-170922A provides a unique opportunity to study the possible physical connection between the high-energy photons and neutrinos. We explore the correlated electromagnetic and neutrino emissions of blazar TXS 0506+056 by a self-consistent leptonic-hadronic model, taking into account particle stochastic acceleration and all relevant radiative processes self-consistently. The electromagnetic and neutrino spectra of blazar TXS 0506+056 are reproduced by the proton synchrotron and hybrid leptonic-hadronic models based on the proton-photon interactions. It is found that the hybrid leptonic-hadronic model can be used to better explain the observed X-ray and $γ$-ray spectra of blazar TXS 0506+056 than the proton synchrotron model. Moreover, the predicted neutrino spectrum of the hybrid leptonic-hadronic model is closer to the observed one compared to the proton synchrotron model. We suggest that the hybrid leptonic-hadronic model is more favored if the neutrino event IceCube-170922A is associated with the blazar TXS 0506+056.

Searching for Quasi-Periodic Modulations in $γ$-ray Active Galactic Nuclei

We perform a systematic search of quasi-periodic variabilities in $γ$-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the third \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope source catalog (3FGL). We employe two techniques, Lomb-Scargle Periodogram (LSP) and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform (WWZ), to obtain power spectra of $γ$-ray light curves covering from 2008 August to 2016 December. The results show that besides several objects that have been reported in previous works, an additional source, the FSRQ PKS 0601-70 has a possible quasi-periodic variability of 450 days in its $γ$-ray light curves with the significance of $>3σ$. The physical implications of our findings are discussed.

Kerr-Newman-AdS Black Hole Surrounded by Perfect Fluid Matter in Rastall Gravity

The Rastall gravity is the modified Einstein general relativity, in which the energy-momentum conservation law is generalized to $T^{μν}_{~~;μ}=λR^{,ν}$. In this work, we derive the Kerr-Newman-AdS (KN-AdS) black hole solutions surrounded by the perfect fluid matter in the Rastall gravity using the Newman-Janis method and Mathematica package. We then discuss the black hole properties surrounded by two kinds of specific perfect fluid matter, the dark energy ($ω=-2/3$) and the perfect fluid dark matter ($ω=-1/3$). Firstly, the Rastall parameter $κλ$ could be constrained by the weak energy condition and strong energy condition. Secondly, by analyzing the number of roots in the horizon equation, we get the range of the perfect fluid matter intensity $α$, which depends on the black hole mass $M$ and the Rastall parameter $κλ$. Thirdly, we study the influence of the perfect fluid dark matter and dark energy on the ergosphere. We find that the perfect fluid dark matter has significant effects on the ergosphere size, while the dark energy has smaller effects. Finally, we find that the perfect fluid matter does not change the singularity of the black hole. Furthermore, we investigate the rotation velocity in the equatorial plane for the KN-AdS black hole with dark energy and perfect fluid dark matter. We propose that the rotation curve diversity in Low Surface Brightness galaxies could be explained in the framework of the Rastall gravity when both the perfect fluid dark matter halo and the baryon disk are taken into account.

Thermodynamics and phase transition in rotational Kiselev black hole

In this work, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of rotational Kiselev black holes (KBH). Specifically, we use the first-order approximation of the event horizon (EH) to calculate thermodynamic properties for general equations of state $ω$. These thermodynamic properties include areas, entropies, horizon radii, surface gravities, surface temperatures, Komar energies and irreducible masses at the Cauchy horizon (CH) and EH. We study the products of these thermodynamic quantities, we find that these products are determined by the equation of state $ω$ and strength parameter $α$. In the case of the quintessence matter ($ω=-2/3$), radiation ($ω=1/3$) and dust ($ω=0$), we discuss their properties in detail. We also generalize the Smarr mass formula and Christodoulou-Ruffini mass formula to rotational KBH. Finally we study the phase transition and thermodynamic geometry for rotational KBH with radiation ($ω=1/3$). Through analysis, we find that this phase transition is a second order phase transition. Furthermore, we also obtain the scalar curvature in the thermodynamic geometry framework, indicating that the radiation matter may change the phase transition condition and properties for Kerr black hole.

Human-Like Decision Making: Document-level Aspect Sentiment Classification via Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning

Recently, neural networks have shown promising results on Document-level Aspect Sentiment Classification (DASC). However, these approaches often offer little transparency w.r.t. their inner working mechanisms and lack interpretability. In this paper, to simulating the steps of analyzing aspect sentiment in a document by human beings, we propose a new Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (HRL) approach to DASC. This approach incorporates clause selection and word selection strategies to tackle the data noise problem in the task of DASC. First, a high-level policy is proposed to select aspect-relevant clauses and discard noisy clauses. Then, a low-level policy is proposed to select sentiment-relevant words and discard noisy words inside the selected clauses. Finally, a sentiment rating predictor is designed to provide reward signals to guide both clause and word selection. Experimental results demonstrate the impressive effectiveness of the proposed approach to DASC over the state-of-the-art baselines.

Statistical analysis on X-ray flares from the nucleus and HST-1 knot in the M87 jet

The statistical properties of X-ray flares from two separate locations (nucleus and HST-1) in the M87 jet are investigated to reveal the physical origin of the flares. We analyse the archival \textit{Chandra} data for M87, and identify 14 flares in the nucleus and 9 flares in HST-1. The peak intensity ($I_{\rm{P}}$) and the flaring duration time ($T_{\rm{fl}}$) for each flare are obtained. It is found that the distributions of both $I_{\rm{P}}$ and $T_{\rm{fl}}$ for the nucleus obey a power-law form with a similar index. A similar result is also obtained for HST-1, and no significant inconsistency between the nucleus and HST-1 is found for the indices. Similar to solar X-ray flares, the power-law distributions of the flare event parameters can be well explained by a self-organized criticality (SOC) system, which are triggered by magnetic reconnection. Our results suggest that the flares from nucleus and HST-1 are possibly triggered by magnetic reconnection process. The consistent indices for the distributions of $I_{\rm{P}}$ and $T_{\rm{fl}}$ in the CORE and HST-1 indicate that the dimensions of the energy dissipation of the magnetic reconnection is identical in the two regions. A strong correlation between the flares in the two regions also suggests a similar physical origin for the flares.

The force-free dipole magnetosphere in non-linear electrodynamics

Quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects may be included in physical processes of magnetar and pulsar magnetospheres with strong magnetic fields. Involving the quantum corrections, the Maxwell electrodynamics is modified to non-linear electrodynamics. In this work, we study the force-free magnetosphere in non-linear electrodynamics in a general framework. The pulsar equation describing a steady and axisymmetric magnetosphere is derived, which now admits solutions with corrections. We derive the first-order non-linear corrections to the near-zone dipole magnetosphere in some popular non-linear effective theories. The field lines of the corrected dipole tend to converge on the rotational axis so that the fields in the polar region are stronger compared to the pure dipole case.

Measuring clock jumps using pulsar timing

In this paper, we investigate the statistical signal-processing algorithm to measure the instant local clock jump from the timing data of multiple pulsars. Our algorithm is based on the framework of Bayesian statistics. In order to make the Bayesian algorithm applicable with limited computational resources, we dedicated our efforts to the analytic marginalization of irrelevant parameters. We found that the widely used parameter for pulsar timing systematics, the `Efac' parameter, can be analytically marginalized. This reduces the Gaussian likelihood to a function very similar to the Student's $t$-distribution. Our iterative method to solve the maximum likelihood estimator is also explained in the paper. Using pulsar timing data from the Yunnan Kunming 40m radio telescope, we demonstrate the application of the method, where 80-ns level precision for the clock jump can be achieved. Such a precision is comparable to that of current commercial time transferring service using satellites. We expect that the current method could help developing the autonomous pulsar time scale.

Constraining the Rastall parameters in static spacetimes with galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing

Recently, Rastall gravity is undergoing a significant surge in popularity. We obtain a power-law total mass-density profile for the inner region (within several effective radius) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the space-time structures which are described by the static spherically-symmetric solutions of Rastall gravity under the assumption of perfect fluid matter. We find that in the inner region of ETGs, the Rastall dimensionless parameter $β=κλ$ determines the mass distribution. We then use 118 galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing systems to constrain the Rastall dimensionless parameter $β$. We find that the mean value of $β$ for total 118 ETGs is $β=0.163\pm0.001$(68\% CL) with a minor intrinsic scatter of $δ=0.020\pm 0.001$. Our work observationally illustrates the physical meaning of the Rastall dimensionless parameter in galaxy scale. From the Newtonian approximation of Rastall gravity, we also find that an absolute isothermal mass distribution for ETGs is not allowed in the framework of Rastall gravity.

Observational Constraints on the Rastall gravity from Rotation Curves of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

The Rastall gravity is a modification of Einstein's general relativity, in which the energy-momentum conservation is not satisfied and depends on the gradient of the Ricci curvature. It is in dispute whether the Rastall gravity is equivalent to the general relativity (GR). In this work, we constrain the theory using the rotation curves of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) spiral galaxies. Through fitting the rotation curves of LSB galaxies, we obtain the parameter $β$ of the Rastall gravity. The $β$ values of LSB galaxies satisfy Weak Energy Condition (WEC) and Strong Energy Condition(SEC). Combining the $β$ values of type Ia supernovae and gravitational lensing of elliptical galaxies on the Rastall gravity, we conclude that the Rastall gravity is equivalent to the general relativity.

Energy release from magnetospheres deformed by gravitational waves

In this work, we consider the possibility of energy release in pulsar magnetospheres deformed by gravitational waves from nearby sources. The strong electromagnetic fields in the magnetospheres may release non-negligible energy despite the weakness of the gravitational wave. When the background spacetime is perturbed due to the passage of a gravitational wave, the original force-free state of the inner magnetosphere will be slightly violated. The plasma-filled magnetosphere tends to evolve into new force-free states as the spacetime varies with time. During this process, a small portion of the electromagnetic energy stored in the magnetosphere will be released to the acceleration of charged particles along the magnetic field lines. When the pulsar is close enough to the gravitational wave source (e.g., $\sim10^{-2}$ pc to the gravitational wave sources observed recently), the resulting energy loss rate is comparable with the radio luminosity of the pulsar. It is also noticed that, under very stringent conditions (for magnetars with much shorter distance to the sources), the released energy can reach the typical energy observed from fast radio bursts (FRBs).

CCD astrometric observations of 2017 VR12,Camillo and Midas

We have observed three near-Earth objects(NEOs), 2017VR12, Camillo, and Midas during the year 2018. The observations were made by the 1-m telescope of Yunnan Observatory over 2 nights. Their precise astrometric positions are derived from 989 CCD observations. The theoretical positions of asteroids are retrieved from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Horizons System and Institut de Mécanique Céleste et de Calcul des Éphémérides (IMCCE). The positions of three asteroids are measured with respect to the stars in Gaia DR2 star catalogue. For 2017 VR12, the mean (O-C) of right ascension and declination are -0.090$^{''}$ and -0.623$^{''}$ based on the ephemeris of published JPL, but the mean (O-C) are 3.122$^{''}$ and -0.636$^{''}$ based on the ephemeris of published IMCCE. The great difference in declination could be explained by several factors. (1)The degenerated CCD images caused by the high apparent motion speed of the object leads to the reduction of positioning accuracy. (2)The poor timing system may bring the system error, especially in the high speed direction. (3)The asteroid may be perturbed by the earth when it approaches the earth too closely. The astrometric results show that the centroid centring method can reduce the dispersion of the non-Gaussian images compared with the PSF model method. For Camillo and Midas, the astrometric results are consistent based on two ephemerides. High-precision timing system, some astronomical effects and geometric distortion of CCD images should be carefully considered in the future works.

A scenario on the power-law total mass-density profile of the inner regions of early-type-galaxies

We naturally obtain a power-law total mass-density profile for the inner regions (within several effective radius) of early-type galaxies(ETGs) from space-time structures, which are described by the static spherically-symmetric solutions of Einstein equations with the perfect fluid matters. We point out that, in the inner region of an early type galaxy, the average value of the equation of state $ω$ determines the power-law index $γ$ of the total mass-density profile given by \cite{2006ApJ...649..599K}. We then use 119 galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing systems from SLACS, BELLS, BELLS GALLERY and SL2S, to constrain the equation of state $ω$ for the inner regions of ETGs. We find that the average value of $ω$ for totally 119 ETGs is $ω=-0.315\pm0.073$ (68\% CL), which is very close to $-1/3$. If $ω=-1/3$ is the best value to describe the equation of state of the inner regions of the dark matter in galaxies, the deviation from $-1/3$ could represent the mixture of baryonic matter and dark matter in galaxies.

Impact of Plasma Instability on Constraint of the Intergalactic Magnetic Field

A relativistic electron-positron pair beam can be produced in the interaction of TeV photons from a blazar with the extragalactic background light (EBL). The relativistic $e^{\pm}$ pairs would loss energy through inverse-Compton scattering (ICS) photons of cosmic microwave background (CMB) or plasma instabilities. The dominant energy-loss process is under debate. Based on the assumption that the dominant energy-loss process is ICS, the resulted cascade GeV radiation is usually used to constrain the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). Here, we include the energy-loss due to plasma oblique instability in the calculation of cascade gamma-ray flux, and investigate the impact of the plasma instability on the constraint of IGMF. The up-to-date GeV data and archival TeV data of the blazar 1ES 0229+200 are used. The results indicate that even if the oblique instability cooling is dominating over ICS cooling, the cascade flux could be still used to constrain the IGMF. It is found that with the ratio between the cooling rates of the oblique instability and the ICS varying from 0.1, 1 to 10, the lower limit of the IGMF putted by the cascade flux and the gamma-ray data changes from $8\times10^{-18}\ $G, $5\times10^{-18}\ $G to $10^{-18}\ $G. If the ratio between the two cooling rates is 30, the estimate of IGMF based on the cascade flux is invalid.

A mixture evolution scenario of the AGN radio luminosity function. II. Do low- and high-power radio-loud AGNs evolve differently?

Following previous work, we further confirm that the cosmic evolution of steep-spectrum radio-loud AGNs (active galactic nuclei) can be reproduced by a simple combination of density evolution (DE) and luminosity evolution (LE). This mixture evolution scenario can naturally explain the luminosity-dependent evolution of radio-loud AGNs. Our models successfully fitted a large amount of data on radio luminosity functions (RLFs) of steep-spectrum sources and multi-frequency source counts. The modeling indicates that the DE slowly increase as $(1+z)^{0.3 \thicksim 1.3}$ out to $z \thicksim 0.8$, and then rapidly decreases as $(1+z)^{-6.8 \thicksim -5.7}$, while the LE rapidly increase as $(1+z)^{4.8}$ out to a higher redshift (at least $z>3.5$). We find a high-redshift decline (i.e. redshift cutoff) in the number density of steep-spectrum radio sources, but we cannot conclude whether such decline is sharp or shallow. We believe that whether a redshift cutoff occurs or not depends mainly on DE, while its steepness is decided by LE, which, however, cannot be well constrained due to the lack of high-redshift samples. Most intriguingly, according to our mixture evolution scenario, there appears to be no need for different evolution for the low- and high-power radio-loud AGNs. Both types of sources experience the same combined evolution of DE and LE.
