LSTM Neural Reordering Feature for Statistical Machine Translation

Artificial neural networks are powerful models, which have been widely applied into many aspects of machine translation, such as language modeling and translation modeling. Though notable improvements have been made in these areas, the reordering problem still remains a challenge in statistical machine translations. In this paper, we present a novel neural reordering model that directly models word pairs and alignment. By utilizing LSTM recurrent neural networks, much longer context could be learned for reordering prediction. Experimental results on NIST OpenMT12 Arabic-English and Chinese-English 1000-best rescoring task show that our LSTM neural reordering feature is robust and achieves significant improvements over various baseline systems.

Taming Energy Cost of Disk Encryption Software on Data-Intensive Mobile Devices

Disk encryption is frequently used to secure confidential data on mobile devices. However, the high energy cost of disk encryption poses a heavy burden on those devices with limited battery capacity especially when a large amount of data needs to be protected by disk encryption. To address the challenge, we develop a new kernel-level disk encryption software, Populus. Almost 98% of Populus's encryption/decryption computation is not related with the input plaintext/ciphertext, so we accomplish the computation in advance during initialization when a consistent power supply is available. We conduct cryptanalysis on Populus and finally conclude that state-of-the-art cryptanalysis techniques fail to break Populus in reasonable computational complexity. We also conduct energy consumption experiments on Populus and dm-crypt, a famous disk encryption software for Android and Linux mobile devices. The experimental results demonstrate that Populus consumes 50%-70% less energy than dm-crypt.

A High-Performance Mid-infrared Optical Switch Enabled by Bulk Dirac Fermions in Cd3As2

Pulsed lasers operating in the 2-5 μm band are important for a wide range of applications in sensing, spectroscopy, imaging and communications. Despite recent advances with mid-infrared gain media, the lack of a capable pulse generation mechanism, i.e. a passive optical switch, remains a significant technological challenge. Here we show that mid-infrared optical response of Dirac states in crystalline Cd3As2, a three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal (TDS), constitutes an ideal ultrafast optical switching mechanism for the 2-5 μm range. Significantly, fundamental aspects of the photocarrier processes, such as relaxation time scales, are found to be flexibly controlled through element doping, a feature crucial for the development of convenient mid-infrared ultrafast sources. Although various exotic physical phenomena have been uncovered in three-dimensional TDS systems, our findings show for the first time that this emerging class of quantum materials can be harnessed to fill a long known gap in the field of photonics.

Significance of self magnetic field in long-distance collimation of laser-generated electron beams

Long-distance collimation of fast electron beams generated by laser-metallic-wire targets has been observed in recent experiments, while the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unclear. In this work, we investigate in detail the laser-wire interaction processes with a simplified model and Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate the significance of the self magnetic fields of the beams in the long-distance collimation. Good agreements of simulated image plate patterns with various experiments and detailed analysis of electron trajectories show that the self magnetic fields provide restoring force that is critical for the beam collimation. By studying the wire-length dependence of beam divergence in certain experiments, we clarify that the role of the metallic wire is to balance the space-charge effect and thus maintain the collimation.

Elastic Properties and Line Tension of Self-Assembled Bilayer Membranes

The elastic properties of a self-assembled bilayer membrane are studied using the self-consistent field theory, applied to a model system composed of flexible amphiphilic chains dissolved in hydrophilic polymeric solvents. Examining the free energy of bilayer membranes with different geometries allows us to calculate their bending modulus, Gaussian modulus, two fourth-order membrane moduli, and the line tension. The dependence of these parameters on the microscopic characteristics of the amphiphilic chain, characterized by the volume fraction of the hydrophilic component, is systematically studied. The theoretical predictions are compared with the results from a simple monolayer model, which approximates a bilayer membrane by two monolayers. Finally the region of validity of the linear elasticity theory is analyzed by examining the higher-order contributions.
