Identifying CP Basis Invariants in SMEFT

Building on our automated framework that uses ring diagrams for classifying CP basis invariants [Phys. Rev. D 108, 115030 (2023)], this paper broadens the application of the methodology with more extensive examples and a wider scope of theoretical frameworks. Here, we showcase its versatility through detailed analyses of specific operators in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), such as a four-fermion operator at dimension-6 and a Yukawa operator extended up to dimension-2n terms while maintaining a dimension-6 core, as well as in SMEFT with sterile neutrinos up to dimension-7. By integrating the ring-diagram technique with the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, we have developed a system that not only simplifies the process of identifying basic and joint invariants but also enables the automatic differentiation between CP-even and CP-odd invariants from the lowest orders. Additionally, this work presents a comparison of our results with those derived using the traditional Hilbert-Poincaré series and its Plethystic logarithm. While these conventional approaches primarily yield the numerical count of invariants, our framework provides a complete structure of invariants, thereby surpassing the limitations of these traditional methods.

Constructive Heavy Particle Effective Theory with Nonlinear Poincaré Symmetry

We develop a constructive heavy particle effective theory (HPET) through the nonlinear realization of the spontaneously broken Poincaré symmetry $R^{3,1} \rtimes SO(3,1) \rightarrow R^{3,1} \rtimes SO(3)$. Starting from the heavy one-particle state, we find the nonlinear boost transformation indicates the shift symmetry in the coset construction, corresponding to the reparameterization invariance. Using the little group Wigner rotation, we obtain the nonlinear boost transformation for corresponding heavy field, recovering the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. At the operator level, since interaction terms would modify the nonlinear transformation, we propose a most general parametrization on the boost transformation only based on symmetry. The nonlinear boost transformation relates different Wilson coefficients of the HPET operators, providing a bottom-up approach of constructing the independent HPET operators, and generalizing the top-down HPET operators beyond the tree-level integrating out. Utilizing the HPET as example, we obtain additional constraints for the boost transformation as well as the additional variation $δ\mathcal{L}$ at the $1/m^3$.

Multi-step phase transition and gravitational wave from general $\mathbb{Z}_2$ scalar extensions

Multi-step phase transition provides a paradigm in which a broken symmetry during phase transition can be restored, enriching the phenomena of both dark matter and baryon asymmetry. We study the dynamics of the multi-step phase transition in the standard model extension with additional isospin $N$-plet scalar field $Φ_2$ under a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We find that the multi-step phase transition could be triggered if there is a moderately large coupling between the Higgs and the $Φ_2$ and this coupling is required to be larger as the mass of the $Φ_2$ and/or isospin increase. The first-order phase transition at the first (second) step can be realized by the thermal loop (tree-level barrier) effects. Thus it is more likely that a detectable spectrum of gravitational waves can be produced at the second step of the phase transition.

Primordial lepton asymmetries: neutrino transport, spectral distortions and cosmological constraints

The primordial neutrino asymmetry leaves profound imprints on the evolution history of the universe, which can be constrained by cosmological observations, including Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), and Large-Scale Structure (LSS). We present comprehensive analysis on implications and constraints of the primordial neutrino asymmetry, based on a precise treatment of neutrino decoupling by solving the complete (anti)neutrino quantum kinetic equations in the Closed-Time-Path formalism. { Assuming the same primordial asymmetry $ξ_ν$ for all neutrino flavors,} the effective number of neutrinos $N_{\rm eff}$ and (anti)neutrino spectral distortions are calculated, and we find that the non-instantaneous decoupling correction is given by $δN_{\rm eff} = 0.0440 + 0.0102 \, ξ_ν^2$. Then we perform the state-of-the-art calculation for the abundance of light elements including (anti)neutrino spectral distortions, which indicate a positive asymmetry $0.032 \leq ξ_nu \leq 0.052$ from EMPRESS data. The implications of the neutrino asymmetry for the CMB and LSS are studied in detail, and we find that the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are also significantly affected by $ξ_νin addition to the sum of neutrino masses. A combined analysis with EMPRESS BBN, Planck CMB and BOSS BAO data yields a tighter constraint $ξ_ν= 0.024 \pm 0.012$, which provides constraints on UV models capable of producing large asymmetries.

Massive Helicity-Chirality Spinor Formalism from Massless Amplitudes with On-shell Mass Insertion

We introduce a helicity-chirality spinor formalism to describe scattering amplitudes for particles of any masses and spins. The massive spin-spinors introduced by Arkani-hamed-Huang-Huang have been extended to the spin/helicity-transversality spinors, in which a new quantum number transversality, closely related to chirality, is introduced by extending the Poincare symmetry. The massive helicity-chirality amplitudes can be written by the large and small components of massless spinors $λ$ and $η$ following the $λ\sim \sqrt{E}, η\sim \mathbf{m}/\sqrt{E}$ expansion order by order, which formulate the power counting rules of a large energy effective theory. Diagrammatically the mass expansion in amplitudes originates from the on-shell mass insertion: the helicity flip and chirality flip, which completely determines the three-point massive amplitudes. From the chirality-helicity unification at the UV, any massive helicity-chirality amplitude can be one-to-one corresponded to massless helicity amplitudes with (without) additional Higgs insertion. This UV-IR correspondence explains the mass enhancement in the weak decay processes $π^+ \to μ^+ ν$ and $t \to W^+ b$, and isolates the correct UV of the three-point massive QED $F\bar{F}γ$ amplitudes in Arkani-hamed-Huang-Huang formalism. From massless-massive correspondence, the massless on-shell techniques can be utilized to construct higher-point massive amplitudes.

Flavor and CP Symmetries in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

The CP properties of effective operators are closely related to the spacetime and internal symmetries, such as the flavor symmetry, in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT). In this work, we utilize the flavor symmetry to organize and reduce numbers of independent Wilson coefficients of the SMEFT operators. We classify the dimension-6 and dimension-8 baryon/lepton-number-conserving operators based on their CP properties. The $U(1)^4$ rephasing symmetry is applied to distinguish CP-odd and CP-violating operators which leads to reduction of the independent CP-violating phases. The $U(3)^5$ and $U(2)^5$ flavor symmetries let us classify the CP-violating phases as the flavor invariants, which can be enumerated by the Hilbert series and obtained explicitly by the Young tensor method. Then after introducing the minimal flavor violation (MFV) hypothesis, we present the flavor structures of the dimension-6 and dimension-8 SMEFT operators under the MFV hypothesis utilizing the spurion method.

Constraints on neutrino non-standard interactions from COHERENT, PandaX-4T and XENONnT

We investigate constraints on neutrino non-standard interactions (NSIs) in the effective field theory framework, using data from the first measurement of solar $^8$B neutrinos via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) in the PandaX-4T and XENONnT experiments and data from the COHERENT experiment. The impacts of neutrino NSIs on the CE$ν$NS cross section and the matter effect in the propagation of solar neutrinos are included, while we obtain that the expected number of CE$ν$NS events is more sensitive to neutrino NSIs appearing in the cross section. Due to relatively large statistical uncertainties, the sensitivities of the PandaX-4T and XENONnT experiments to the neutrino NSIs are currently limited, compared to the COHERENT experiment. Besides, we find that since the central value of the measured CE$ν$NS counts significantly differs from the Standard Model prediction, the sensitivity of PandaX-4T experiment is even more restricted compared to XENONnT. However, the measurements of PandaX-4T and XENONnT are uniquely sensitive to the neutrino NSIs for the $τ$ flavor due to oscillation feature of the solar $^8$B neutrinos. We also assess how the experimental central value, exposure, and systematic uncertainties will affect the constraints on neutrino NSIs from various CE$ν$NS measurements in the future.

Chiral Effective Field Theories for Strong and Weak Dynamics

The chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) is an extension of the chiral perturbation theory that includes the nuclear forces and weak currents at the hadronic and nuclear scales. We propose a systematic framework of parametrising the pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon Lagrangian via the Weinberg power counting rules. We enumerate the operator bases of ChEFT by extending the Hilbert series of the pure meson sector to the nucleon sector with the CP symmetries. The Young tensor method is utilized to obtain the complete sets of the nucleon-nucleon, three-nucleon operators with/without pions ($\notπ$-EFT). Then we use the spurion technique to reconstruct the ChEFT Lagrangian by taking the adjoint spurion and leptonic fields as the building blocks, without the need of external sources. These operators can be applied to both the strong dynamics, and the nucleon/nuclear weak current processes.

Neutrinophilic $\mathbfΛ$CDM Extension for EMPRESS, DESI and Hubble Tension

A number of recent cosmological observations have indicated the presence of new physics beyond the $\mathbfΛ$CDM model. Combining observations from EMPRESS on helium abundance and DESI on baryon acoustic oscillations with Hubble tension, we show that all of them can be explained concurrently with a extension of the $\mathbfΛ$CDM model with primordial neutrino asymmetry $ξ_ν$ and additional contribution to the effective number of neutrinos $δN_{\rm eff}$. Based on the accurate treatments of neutrino decoupling and BBN processes, we present state-of-the-art constraints on neutrino asymmetry for the fixed or varying $N_{\rm eff}$. Comparing different extensions of the $\mathbfΛ$CDM model, we show that the neutrinophilic $\mathbfΛ$CDM extension with $ξ_ν = 0.056 \pm 0.017 $ and $δN_{\rm eff} = 0.41 \pm 0.16$ is preferred by current observations, while the Hubble tension in this model is also alleviated to be $2.2 σ$.

Systematic Spurion Matching between Low Energy EFT and Chiral Lagrangian

The hadronic chiral Lagrangian can be matched from the low energy effective field theory (LEFT) operators at the quark level. Traditionally, as the mass dimension of the LEFT operators increases, more and more external sources are necessarily introduced in the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT). In this work, we present a systematic matching procedure with the single spurion field $\mathbf{T}$ of the flavor $SU(3)_V$ octet, without the need of external sources. We present the complete sets of the LEFT operators, which have been reformulated using the flavor $SU(3)_V$ symmetry up to dimension 9. At the same time, the ChPT Lagrangian is also reformulated using the single spurion and lepton fields, instead of external sources. The spurion matching can be performed between LEFT and ChPT operators with the same flavor $SU(3)_V$ and $CP$ structures, and the same leptonic currents, using the naive dimensional analysis at the quark and hadronic levels.

Extended Poincare Symmetry Dictates Massive Scattering Amplitudes

We identify an extended Poincare symmetry $ISO(2) \times ISO(3,1)$ for on-shell massive scattering amplitudes, transforming under the $U(2)$ Little group symmetry. Thus the one-particle state involves in both spin and transversality $t$ (related to chirality), and the spin-spinors are extended to the spin-transverality spinors. The massive spin-$s$ spinors with different transversality can be related by the $SO(5,1)$ symmetry, although the $U(2)$ Little group breaks the symmetry explicitly. The three-point massive amplitudes can be fully determined from the $T^\pm$ and $m$ generators, diagrammatically denoted as the mass insertion and chirality flip, which provide correspondence between massless ultraviolet and massive chiral-eigenstate amplitudes. Thus the massless on-shell technique can be utilized to construct higher-point tree- and loop-level massive amplitudes.

Gravitational waves from patterns of electroweak symmetry breaking: an effective perspective

The future space-borne gravitational wave (GW) detectors would provide a promising probe for the new physics beyond the standard model that admits the first-order phase transitions. The predictions for the GW background vary sensitively among different concrete particle physics models but also share a large degeneracy in the model buildings, which motivates an effective model description on the phase transition based on different patterns of the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). In this paper, using the scalar $N$-plet model as a demonstration, we propose an effective classification for three different patterns of EWSB: (1) radiative symmetry breaking with classical scale invariance, (2) Higgs mechanism in generic scalar extension, and (3) higher dimensional operators. We conclude that a strong first-order phase transition could be realized for (1) and (2) with a small quartic coupling and a small isospin of an additional $N$-plet field for the light scalar field model with and without the classical scale invariance, and (3) with a large mixing coupling between scalar fields and a large isospin of the $N$-plet field for the heavy scalar field model.

Maximising CP Violation in Naturally Aligned Two-Higgs Doublet Models

The Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) is a well-motivated theoretical framework that provides additional sources of CP Violation (CPV) beyond the Standard Model (SM). After studying the vacuum topology of a general (convex) 2HDM potential, we unambiguously identify three origins of CPV: (I) Spontaneous CPV (SCPV), where the vacuum manifold has at least two degenerate CPV minima disconnected by domain walls, (ii) Explicit CPV (ECPV) with one single CPV ground state, and (iii) Mixed Spontaneous and Explicit CPV (MCPV), where the theory possesses more than one $non$-degenerate CPV local minimum. Most importantly, we define a novel complex parameter $r_{\rm CP}$ whose norm and phase control the three different realisations of CPV, at least at the tree level. In all these scenarios, only two CPV phases can be made independent, as any third CPV parameter will always be constrained via the CP-odd tadpole condition. Since ECPV vanishes in 2HDMs where SM Higgs alignment is achieved naturally through accidental continuous symmetries, we analyse the possibility of maximising CPV through soft and explicit breaking of these symmetries. We derive upper limits on key CPV parameters that quantify the degree of SM misalignment from constraints due to the non-observation of an electron Electric Dipole Moment (EDM). Finally, we delineate the CP-violating parameter space of the so-constrained naturally aligned 2HDMs that can further be probed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Complete CP-eigen Bases of Meson-Baryon Chiral Lagrangian up to $p^5$-order

Chiral perturbation theory describes the low energy dynamics of mesons and baryons in terms of the nonlinear Goldstone boson and fermion degrees of freedom. Through the Young tensor technique, we construct the on-shell operator bases for the meson-baryon system up to $p^5$-order, using the chiral dimension power counting and heavy baryon expansion. For the Lorentz structure, additional treatments on off-shell external sources and operators with higher derivatives are necessarily considered, while for the internal structure, the invariant tensor basis is converted into the trace basis equivalently, and Cayley-Hamilton relations are utilized to classify different CP eigen-operators. Finally we present the complete operator set of $C$+$P$+, $C$+$P$-, $C$-$P$+, and $C$-$P$- eigen-operators at the $p^5$-order, and obtain the operator counting from the Hilbert series.

Complete $CP$ Eigen-bases of Mesonic Chiral Lagrangian up to $p^8$-order

Chiral perturbation theory systematically describes the low energy dynamics of meson and baryons using nonlinear Nambu-Goldstone fields. Using the Young tensor technique, we construct the pure mesonic effective operators up to $p^8$-order, one-to-one corresponding to contact amplitudes with the on-shell Adler zero condition. The off-shell external sources, non-vanishing under equation-of-motion conditions, are also added to the operator bases. We also show the invariant tensor bases using the Young tableau is equivalent to the trace bases with Cayley-Hamilton relations. Separated into different $CP$ eigenstates, at $\mathcal{O}(p^8)$ we obtain the operator lists of the 567 $C$+$P$+ operators, 483 $C$+$P$- operators, 376 $C$-$P$+ operators, and 408 $C$-$P$- operators for $SU(2)$ case, while there are 1959 $C$+$P$+ operators, 1809 $C$+$P$- operators, 1520 $C$-$P$+ operators, and 1594 $C$-$P$- operators for $SU(3)$ case, consistent with results using the Hilbert series.

Complementary LHC searches for UV resonances of the $0νββ$ decay operators

We investigate the quark-level effective operators related to the neutrinoless double beta $(0νββ)$ decay process, and their ultraviolet completions relevant to chiral enhancement effects at the hadronic level. We have classified several kinds of leptoquark models, matching to different standard model effective operators. Assuming weakly-coupled new physics, we find the ongoing $0νββ$-decay experiments are sensitive to new physics scale at around $2\sim 4$ TeV, which is in the reach of LHC searches. We discuss the discovery potential of such resonances in the same-sign dilepton channels at the LHC. Therefore, the direct LHC searches and indirect $0νββ$-decay searches are complementary to each other in testing the UV completions of the effective operators for $0νββ$ decay.

Distinguishing thermal histories of dark matter from structure formation

It is important to understand the implications of current observational constraints and potential signatures on the thermal history of dark matter. In this paper, we build the connection between the present-day velocities and the production mechanism of dark matter and find that the current observation on structure formation can be imposed to constrain the decoupling temperatures and the phase-space distribution of dark matter. We further explore the potential of distinguishing different possible thermal histories of dark matter with hypothetical future observational data. Using the freeze-in/-out scenarios as templates, we find that future precision data may uniquely identify the allowed parameter spaces for freeze-in and freeze-out, or even completely rule out one of the scenarios. This method can be more generally applied to other scenarios.

Automated Ring-Diagram Framework for Classifying CP Invariants

In this study, we introduce a transformative, automated framework for classifying basis invariants in generic field theories. Utilising a novel ring-diagram methodology accompanied by the well-known Cayley-Hamilton theorem, our approach uniquely enables the identification of basic invariants and their CP-property characterisation. Critically, our framework also unveils previously concealed attributes of established techniques reliant on the Hilbert-Poincaré series and its associated Plethystic logarithm. This paradigm shift has broad implications for the deeper understanding and more accurate classification of CP invariants in generic field theories.
