Topological Surface Superconductivity Induced by Hydrostatic Pressure-Enhanced Antisymmetric Spin-Orbit Coupling in Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor PbTaSe2

A notable characteristic of PbTaSe$_2$, a prototypical noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductor, is that its superconductivity can be modulated through a structural transition under hydrostatic pressure [Phys. Rev. B 95, 224508 (2017)]. Here we report on simultaneous pressure-sensitive point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy and bulk resistance measurements on PbTaSe$_2$, to elucidate the nature of the surface and bulk superconductivity and their evolution with hydrostatic pressure. It is found that in high pressure region the superconducting gap opening temperature $T_c^A$ is significantly lower that the bulk resistive transition temperature $T_c^R$, revealing a clear experimental signature of surface-bulk separation associated with enhanced antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC). The PCAR spectra, reflecting the superconducting surface state, are analyzed with the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory, yielding an isotropic $s$-wave full BCS-gap in the strong coupling regime. Analysis based on a modified McMillan formula indicates a sizable coupling strength contributed from ASOC for the superconducting surface state. These results suggest the coexistence of full gap $s$-wave superconductivity and topological surface states in PbTaSe$_2$, indicating that this NSC with significantly enhanced ASOC may offer a solid platform to investigate the topological aspect in the superconducting condensate.

Superconductivity Induced at a Point Contact on the Topological Semimetal Tungsten Carbide

We report the observation of local superconductivity induced at the point contact formed between a normal metal tip and WC -- a triple point topological semimetal with super hardness. Remarkably, the maximum critical temperature is up to near 12 K but insensitive to the tip's magnetism. The lateral dimensions of the superconducting puddles were evaluated and the temperature dependencies of superconducting gap and upper critical field were also obtained. These results put constraints on the explanation of the induced superconductivity and pave a pathway for exploring topological superconductivity.

Vortex configurations of bosons in an optical lattice

The single vortex problem in a strongly correlated bosonic system is investigated self-consistently within the mean-field theory of the Bose-Hubbard model. Near the superfluid-Mott transition, the vortex core has a tendency toward the Mott-insulating phase, with the core particle density approaching the nearest commensurate value. If the nearest neighbor repulsion exists, the charge density wave order may develop locally in the core. The evolution of the vortex configuration from the strong to weak coupling regions is studied. This phenomenon can be observed in systems of rotating ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices and Josephson junction arrays

Exact SO(5) Symmetry in spin 3/2 fermionic system

The spin 3/2 fermion models with contact interactions have a {\it generic} SO(5) symmetry without any fine-tuning of parameters. Its physical consequences are discussed in both the continuum and lattice models. A Monte-Carlo algorithm free of the sign problem at any doping and lattice topology is designed when the singlet and quintet interactions satisfy $U_0\le U_2\le -{3\over5} U_0 (U_0\le 0)$, thus making it possible to study different competing orders with high numerical accuracy. This model can be accurately realized in ultra-cold atomic systems.
