Nonlocal Kondo effect and quantum critical phase in heavy fermion metals

Heavy fermion metals typically exhibit unconventional quantum critical point or quantum critical phase at zero temperature due to competition of Kondo effect and magnetism. Previous theories were often based on certain local type of assumptions and a fully consistent explanation of experiments has not been achieved. Here we develop an efficient algorithm for the Schwinger boson approach to explore the effect of spatial correlations on the Kondo lattice and introduce the concept of nonlocal Kondo effect in the quantum critical region with deconfined spinons. We predict a global phase diagram containing a non-Fermi liquid quantum critical phase with a hidden holon Fermi surface and a partially enlarged electron Fermi surface for strong quantum fluctuations while a single quantum critical point for weak quantum fluctuations. This explains the unusual metallic spin liquid recently reported in the frustrated Kondo lattice CePdAl and resolves the Fermi volume puzzle in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. Our theory highlights the importance of nonlocal physics and provides a unified understanding of heavy fermion quantum criticality.

Spin current Kondo effect in frustrated Kondo systems

Magnetic frustrations can enhance quantum zero-point motion in spin systems and lead to exotic topological insulating states. When coupled to mobile electrons, they may lead to unusual non-Fermi liquid or metallic spin liquid states whose nature has not been well explored. Here, we propose a spin current Kondo mechanism underlying a series of non-Fermi liquid phases on the border of Kondo and magnetic phases in a frustrated three-impurity Kondo model. This mechanism is confirmed by renormalization group analysis and describes movable Kondo singlets called "holons" induced by an effective coupling between the spin current of conduction electrons and the vector chirality of localized spins. Similar mechanism may widely exist in all frustrated Kondo systems and be detected through spin-current noise measurements.

Strange metal in paramagnetic heavy-fermion Kondo lattice: Dynamical large-N fermionic multi-channel approach

The mechanism of strange metal (SM) with unconventional charge transport near magnetic phase transitions has become an outstanding open problem in correlated electron systems. Recently, an exotic quantum critical SM phase was observed in paramagnetic frustrated heavy-fermion materials near Kondo breakdown. We establish a controlled theoretical framework to this issue via a dynamical large-N fermionic multichannel approach to the two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model, where KB transition separates a heavy-Fermi liquid from fermionic spin-liquid state. With Kondo fluctuations being fully considered, we find a distinct SM behavior with quasi-linear-in-temperature scattering rate associated with KB. When particle-hole symmetry is present, signatures of a critical spin-liquid SM phase as $T \rightarrow 0$ are revealed with $ω/T$ scaling extended to a wide range. We attribute these features to the interplay of critical bosonic charge (Kondo) fluctuations and gapless fermionic spinons. The implications of our results for the experiments are discussed.

Quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg model: a Schwinger-boson large-N approach

Strange metal behavior arises in heavy fermion metals close to antiferromagnetic transitions. An increasing amount of experiments indicates a link of such behavior to a Kondo breakdown quantum critical point. To shed light on this intriguing problem, we study the 2D Kondo-Heisenberg model using a dynamical large-N multichannel Schwinger boson approach. We identify and characterize the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state to a Kondo-dominated paramagnetic state, and attribute a jump in certain phase shift to Kondo breakdown. In addition, we calculate transport and thermodynamic quantities and discuss them in the context of the experimental observations in quantum critical heavy fermion systems.

Concurrent intersection point of magnetization and magneto-conductivity curves in strongly fluctuating superconductors

The thermal fluctuations contribution to magnetization and magneto-conductivity of type II layered superconductor is calculated in the framework of Lawrence-Doniach model. For numerous high temperature cuprate superconductors, it was discovered that the magnetization dependence on temperature in wide range of fields exhibits an intersection point at a temperature slightly below $T_{c}$. We notice a similar intersection point of the magneto-conductivity curves at the approximate same temperature. The phenomenon is explained by strong (non-gaussian) thermal fluctuations with interactions treated using a self-consistent theory. All higher Landau levels should be included. Dimensionality of the fluctuations is defined and the 2D-3D dimensional crossover is the key for the existence of intersection points.
