Quantitative complementarity between local and nonlocal character of quantum states in a three-qubit system

Local or nonlocal character of quantum states can be quantified and is subject to various bounds that can be formulated as complementarity relations. Here, we investigate the local vs. nonlocal character of pure three-qubit states by a four-way interferometer. The complete entanglement in the system can be measured as the entanglement of a specific qubit with the subsystem consisting of the other two qubits. The quantitative complementarity relations are verified experimentally in an NMR quantum information processor.

Complete Adiabatic Quantum Search in Unsorted Databases

We propose a new adiabatic algorithm for the unsorted database search problem. This algorithm saves two thirds of qubits than Grover's algorithm in realizations. Meanwhile, we analyze the time complexity of the algorithm by both perturbative method and numerical simulation. The results show it provides a better speedup than the previous adiabatic search algorithm.

A Non-Oracle Quantum Search Algorithm and Its Experimental Implementation

Grover's algorithm has achieved great success. But quantum search algorithms still are not complete algorithms because of Grover's Oracle. We concerned on this problem and present a new quantum search algorithm in adiabatic model without Oracle. We analyze the general difficulties in quantum search algorithms and show how to solve them in the present algorithm. As well this algorithm could deal with both single-solution and multi-solution searches without modification. We also implement this algorithm on NMR quantum computer. It is the first experiment which perform a real quantum database search rather than a marked-state search.

A Quantum Adiabatic Algorithm for Factorization and Its Experimental Implementation

We propose an adiabatic quantum algorithm capable of factorizing numbers, using fewer qubits than Shor's algorithm. We implement the algorithm in an NMR quantum information processor and experimentally factorize the number 21. Numerical simulations indicate that the running time grows only quadratically with the number of qubits.

Observation of Geometric Phases for Three-Level Systems using NMR Interferometry

Geometric phase (GP) independent of energy and time rely only on the geometry of state space. It has been argued to have potential fault tolerance and plays an important role in quantum information and quantum computation. We present the first experiment for producing and measuring an Abelian geometric phase shift in a three-level system by using NMR interferometry. In contrast to existing experiments, based on the geometry of $S^2$, our experiment concerns the geometric phase with the geometry of $SU(3)/U(2)$. Two interacting qubits have been used to provide such a three-dimensional Hilbert space.

Measuring complete quantum states with a single observable

Experimental determination of an unknown quantum state usually requires several incompatible measurements. However, it is also possible to determine the full quantum state from a single, repeated measurement. For this purpose, the quantum system whose state is to be determined is first coupled to a second quantum system (the "assistant") in such a way that part of the information in the quantum state is transferred to the assistant. The actual measurement is then performed on the enlarged system including the original system and the assistant. We discuss in detail the requirements of this procedure and experimentally implement it on a simple quantum system consisting of nuclear spins.

Is the quantum adiabatic theorem consistent?

The quantum adiabatic theorem states that if a quantum system starts in an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, and this Hamiltonian varies sufficiently slowly, the system stays in this eigenstate. We investigate experimentally the conditions that must be fulfilled for this theorem to hold. We show that the traditional adiabatic condition as well as some conditions that were recently suggested are either not sufficient or not necessary. Experimental evidence is presented by a simple experiment using nuclear spins.

Experimental Demonstration of the Unified Framework for the Mixed State Geometric Phase

Geometrical phases have been applied in virtually every major branch of physics and they play an important role in topology and knot theory in mathematics and quantum computation. However, most of the early works focus on pure quantum states which are very unrealistic and almost never occur in practice. The two existed definitions -Uhlmann's and Sjöqvist's- would result in different values for the geometric phase in general. The definition of geometric phase in mixed state scenario is still an open question. Here we present a unified framework for both approaches within one and the same formalism based on simple interferometry. We then present experimental results which confirm both approaches to mixed state geometric phase and clearly demonstrate that their unification is possible. Our experiments are furthermore the first such to measure Uhlmann's mixed state geometric phase and show in addition that it is different to the Sjöqvist's phase.

Experimental Observation of a Topological Phase in the Maximally Entangled State of a Pair of Qubits

Quantum mechanical phase factors can be related to dynamical effects or to the geometrical properties of a trajectory in a given space - either parameter space or Hilbert space. Here, we experimentally investigate a quantum mechanical phase factor that reflects the topology of the SO(3) group: since rotations by $π$ around antiparallel axes are identical, this space is doubly connected. Using pairs of nuclear spins in a maximally entangled state, we subject one of the spins to a cyclic evolution. If the corresponding trajectory in SO(3) can be smoothly deformed to a point, the quantum state at the end of the trajectory is identical to the initial state. For all other trajectories the quantum state changes sign.

Experimental Realization of $1 \to 2$ Asymmetric Phase-Covariant Quantum Cloning

While exact cloning of an unknown quantum state is prohibited by the linearity of quantum mechanics, approximate cloning is possible and has been used, e.g., to derive limits on the security of quantum communication protocols. In the case of asymmetric cloning, the information from the input state is distributed asymmetrically between the different output states. Here, we consider asymmetric phase-covariant cloning, where the goal is to optimally transfer the phase information from a single input qubit to different output qubits. We construct an optimal quantum cloning machine for two qubits that does not require ancilla qubits and implement it on an NMR quantum information processor.

Repeat-Until-Success Generation of Symmetric States without External Control

In the present paper, we propose a "repeat-until-success" scheme induced by single particle measurement to generate arbitrary symmetric states based on spin network. This protocol requires no modulated controls during the whole process and it provides a persistent approach towards the desired symmetric state. As a special case, we demonstrate that W state can be created with unit probability within this framework.

The Application of Asymmetric Entangled States in Quantum Game

In the present letter, we propose a more general entangling operator to the quantization of Cournot economic model, in which players can access to a continuous set of strategies. By analyzing the relation between the von Neumann entropy of the entangled state and the total profit of two players precisely, we find that the total profit at the Nash equilibrium always achieves its maximal value as long as the entropy tends to infinity. Moreover, since the asymmetry is introduced in the entangled state, the quantum model shows some kind of "encouraging" and "suppressing" effect in profit functions of different players.

Optimal quantum cloning via spin networks

In this paper we present an approach to quantum cloning via free dynamical evolution of spin networks. By properly designing the network and the couplings between spins, we show that optimal 1->M phase covariant cloning can be achieved without any external control. Especially, when M is an odd number, the optimal phase-covariant cloning can be achieved without ancillas. Moreover, we demonstrate that the same framework is capable for optimal 1->2 universal cloning.

Efficient construction of 2-D cluster states with probabilistic quantum gates

We propose an efficient scheme for constructing arbitrary 2-D cluster states using probabilistic entangling quantum gates. In our scheme, the 2-D cluster state is constructed with star-like basic units generated from 1-D cluster chains.By applying parallel operations, the process of generating 2-D (or higher dimensional) cluster states is significantly accelerated, which provides an efficient way to implement realistic one way quantum computers.

Quantification of complementarity in multi-qubit systems

Complementarity was originally introduced as a qualitative concept for the discussion of properties of quantum mechanical objects that are classically incompatible. More recently, complementarity has become a \emph{quantitative} relation between classically incompatible properties, such as visibility of interference fringes and "which-way" information, but also between purely quantum mechanical properties, such as measures of entanglement. We discuss different complementarity relations for systems of 2-, 3-, or \textit{n} qubits. Using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, we have experimentally verified some of these complementarity relations in a two-qubit system.

Experimental demonstration of a non-destructive controlled-NOT quantum gate for two independent photon-qubits

Universal logic gates for two quantum bits (qubits) form an essential ingredient of quantum information processing. However, the photons, one of the best candidates for qubits, suffer from the lack of strong nonlinear coupling required for quantum logic operations. Here we show how this drawback can be overcome by reporting a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of a non-destructive controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate for two independent photons using only linear optical elements in conjunction with single-photon sources and conditional dynamics. Moreover, we have exploited the CNOT gate to discriminate all the four Bell-states in a teleportation experiment.

Experimental Test of the Kochen-Specker Theorem for Single Qubits using Positive Operator-Valued Measures

We present an experimental scheme for the implementation of arbitrary generalized measurements, represented by positive-operator valued measures, on the polarization of single photons, using linear optical devices. Further, we experimentally test a Kochen-Specker theorem for single qubits using positive operator-valued measures. Our experimental results for the first time disprove non-contextual hidden-variable theories, even for single qubits.

General Description of Mixed State Geometric Phase

We consider arbitrary mixed state in unitary evolution and provide a comprehensive description of corresponding geometric phase in which two different points of view prevailing currently can be unified. Introducing an ancillary system and considering the purification of given mixed state, we find that different results of mixed state geometric phase correspond to different choice of the representation of Hilbert space of the ancilla. Moreover we demonstrate that in order to obtain Uhlmann's geometric phase it is not necessary to resort to the unitary evolution of ancilla.
